The Dance Of Maya - The Mahavishnu Orchestra
John McLaughlin - guitar
Jan Hammer - keyboards
Jerry Goodman - violin
Rick Laird - bass
Billy Cobham - drums
Imagine being a Syracuse University student going from one class to another and this is right in your face. It would make you rethink your life priorities.
After god Jimi death, John is the greatest guitarist in the world... To watch this like a dream..
This concert was at Skytop, Syracuse University. The opener was Ravi Shankar - what an afternoon!!
Sic, just sic!!!!! I love this live version sound better than studio cut.. Hi Energy....Zeppelin who????? LOL
I was and still am in AWE of McLaughlin. Just speechless
I saw the original Mahavishnu Orchestra in the Summer of 1972. Amazing show. Afterwards I managed to walk into the tent on the stage without being stopped. McLaughlin was talking to Doors guitarist Robbie Kreiger(The Doors had played their obviously without Morrison). I was able to talk with McLaughlin and we ended up talking about Hendrix. He mentioned jamming with Hendrix in 1969 and this wasn’t well known as it is now. But we talked about if Jimi was still alive would they record together and he responded immediately with “Yes”!
Jerry Goodman!! Goodness! - and the rest of the band, seriously
Billy Cobham! ..like his life depends on hitting those pans
I saw these guys when I was In high school and was so blown away that I traveled around to see them from city to city with a fellow musician friend . Also Got to know John. He was very gracious to us . this is the greatest band of all time , and no band even comes close .
+RocketKirchner Which High School?
+Walter Kolosky Oh, wait a minute- I thought you meant they played your high school... never mind :-)
maybe second greatest next to tony williams lifetime, also featuring john. after those two, agreed: nothing close
...fantastic..I met John after a show in Australia in the 90’s.Total class act..a gentleman.
The Beatles' drummer, Ringo Star, once checked out Billy Cobham's drum setup in person and was like, holy crap, this is next level, this is gonna be really interesting...
This band flue by without notice by most, but changed lives of others...Thank You Mahavishnu John. Jesus has blessed you.
i think Jesus would like how gifted & humble John McLaughlin is & disregard the Hindu stuff.I'm Irish pagan but Jesus is my hero & *he knows it!*
I saw them several times back in the day. I was left dazed every time.
The merger of high intensity rock and roll combined with the virtuosity of jazz improvisation and the rhythmic complexity of Indian music. There was nothing like them before or since. Totally original music that rekindles a lot of memories.
Was there even something like this after them?
I would argue that Magma reached the same levels of virtuosity, intensity and spiritual interplay that could have only been conjured from some place far beyond back in the same era as this
@@martinbe5111Yes! Larry Coryell and the Eleventh House. Very high intensity fusion jamming but also with elements of Blues & Funk.
Billy Cobham was an "impossible drummer!" Damn!!!!!
Reassembling the subdivisions. It’s really simple, but it certainly isn’t easy to do.
Incredible footage! I believe they were directly connected to the high voltage power lines behind them in this incredible footage. THANK YOU for posting this ! Peace from Detroit MI.
The Mayan calendar actually ended when John McLaughlin wrote this.
Something Spiritual / Something Beautiful ☄
I think that period when Hammer was mainly playing his Fender Rhodes was my favorite.
He really had the biggest melodic brain in the group.
Excellent savagery! Billy Cobham is an excellent listener.
Cobham = The Beast
A totally original once in a lifetime band that blended the virtuosity of jazz soloing with the intensity of hard rock all while playing South Indian and North Indian rhythmic patterns. There was never a band with the instrumental ability to blend all these influences and yet be relatable to someone steeped in the rock music of their era. It brings back wonderful memories.
My God, the good old days....
It reminds me of music from an old spooky movie..specially that guitar section near the start, Billy Cobham was "on fire" 🔥
Billy Cobham el baterista ametralladora de varias décadas.
It's in 10/8, then goes to 20! Once I learned how to count this Ungodly/Beautiful Thing, It's Pure Joy to Listen to,and Play Along With!
I've never learned to 'count' it - just feel. not that I can play this. used to dabble with Birds of Fire at waaaay slower tempo.
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! That brings back old memories and hey what an intensive and powerful playing!!!
jerry goodman awesome....& McLaughlin/Cobham 7mins in WOW
Greatest band ever
indeed!
Johns 12 string work in conjunction with Cobham. Telepathic.
This just looks and feels like and important piece of music history. And, of course, it is!
wow man i NEVER thought i would EVER see this done live. i had the album and i was such a mclaughlin fan. what a god :)
MR COBHAM.
for 15 years, my favorite John Mcglaughlin solo ever. raw, more than hendrix.not including the first Shakti solo however. that concert changed me from electric to acoustic till now.
the shit ! ... the definition of jazz rock fusion ... with some of the baddest musicians on the planet
Changed my life
Yes.
words cats describe!
Yup.
Great concert with Ravi Shankar opening up for them!!
Thank you, Ron Hoover, brings back that raw excitement that this band generated. At WGSU, SUNY Geneseo, NY in 72-3, all the disc jockeys(mostly just me) were waiting for "Birds of Fire". This cut, from the first groundbreaking album, is incendiary.
crazy music..
This must be an illusion, it's too good to be True! 👌🏼💯🕉💜
What a fantastic recording! Not stellar ion neither sound or picture, but what a document of a band at its best! Later on, it was very technical, and very clever, yet they became very aware of themselves, to the point thaqt they lost their plot alltogether. But here, all of that technical provess was married with the energy of first playing together... Love(!) this recording.
great words in the retrospect of this amazing group.
Nicely written and spot on.
It was very technical and very clever from the first song on; it didn't become so over time, and as great as the band was, the early performances were quite uneven, and though JM is one of the greatest electric guitarists ever, some of his solos had cringe worthy moments, particularly with regard to tone and pitch, with often wildly inaccurate bends.
As for your statement that they "became very aware of themselves to the point that they lost their plot altogether"; that sounds like the kind of silly made up bullshit the most pretentious reviewer falls back on in lieu of actually having anything to say-a deadline is still a deadline, and an ego is still an ego, so many reviews are full of such fanciful crap. You can't possibly know how "aware of themselves" they were, and it is a band, not a book; there was no "plot" to lose. Utter nonsense, but I guess it sounded better in your head than the more honest but less self important "I liked their early stuff best".
@Greg Vinson Yeah You bloody tosser, you! Fuck off!
On the point!
Never before, not since..........
HOLY SHIT!
Brutal...
I've got about 30 versions (literally) of this tune but this is the 'shizzle' as I believe the kids are saying these days ; )
You're almost 20 years behind on slang 🤣
Just an amazing piece of footage......
Jerry Goodman Rocks!
The Metaphisics of the Psicodelia!!!
Thanks so much for sharing this.
I like Billy’s “Brown” athletic shirt.
During this earlier phase of the band the original melodies of the songs were easier to hear as compared to some months later heading into ‘73.
In B and W, Yow! Dig it Man..
This song would be a nightmare on paper since the time signature changes literally every bar. The entire song is alternating bars of 12/8 and 8/8.
Increible escuchar y ver esta pieza maravillosa, a blanco y negro, perfecto y fotogénico el panorama
I still remember the first time I heard that song! I just wanted to listen to it for hours. Such a masterful combination of rhythms, harmonies and texture!
As an ironic side, think this was been played at a university. Go try today if you dare to see what probably is being played.
Does anybody know where to get a transcription / score of this song?
There is a book of scores of Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire and a few excerpts from Visions From The Emerald Beyond and Between Nothingness and Eternity. The book is simply called 'John McLaughlin and The Mahavishnu Orchestra.'
Best of the Best then..
noone will ever do a solo like this one ever
Increíble registro!!!
This is INSANE!!! WOWZERS.
это великий музыкант учитель музычи
Clarke was with Chic Corea in Return to Forever, yes. It's Laird with Mahavishnu.
my god - Jan Hammer had the Elton John look ;-D
on piano too rofl
Was Hammer a E.John fan ? ;-) )
Aşk cazdır... yaşasın şiir, yaşasın jazz...

Holy shit.
Tightest shit ever!
5:00, Elton John jammin' with the Mahavishnu!!
+xtremenortherner Jan hammer
For some reason, youtube commentors seem to think it is hilarious to say "I didn't know [celebrity resembling a band member-at least in regard to both having the same number of eyes] played [instrument] for [band name]". It wasn't funny the first time, and after a billion repetitions, hasn't gotten any funnier, but hope springs eternal, so they just keep on repeating it.
Jan Hammar!
Elton was probably not even born (musically) at this time and surely would not have had any idea of that kind of gravity and quality of music anyway.

I didn’t realise he had Elton John on keyboards! 😉🫣😁
the beginning sound like "Hope" from Birds of Fire
for some reason i thought stanley clarke played base. maybe it was return to forever or something i forget now.

BubbaZen10 JUST, I THINK YOU ARE ALL RIGHT
Gustavo Rrdriguez Back at ya Gustavo.
Music reaches across space and time, bridges language and every difference, and brings us together.
Now THAT my friend, is truly magic! ;)

Recorded at Skytop, part of Syracuse University. The real magic is that it wasn't raining on this uncovered event.
Clarke was in Return To Forever with Chick Corea, that's right.
When was the last show performed in this spot..or was this a random festival? TMO is in my VIENS!!!!
I did a one man cover of this song. Wasn't easy.
Then you may be a genius.
Hardly, but feel free to check it out.
incidently gang - this piece is in 6 and half 4 time .
With Elton John on keys?

10:30 - 10:50 !!!
12:05-12:37 !!!!
@@flame-sky7148 11:10 is where the real fun begins! where the shuffle merges with the intro! Still scratching my head. Can play it but still don't really get it!
Hammer looks like Elton John
How did this wind up in my history ... ? maybe I didn't watch it ... hmmmm ... very unheartfelt blues lol
Never understood why this song turns into a simple blues progression halfway through. Makes no sense to me. Love the first half though
because it can.
I’ve always agreed to some extent.
But it works because it helps create that clever segue back to the original melody.
