But both the shadow man and woman pass the test of unconditional love! Even when the flame of her beauty is extinguished, his love is quiet and gentle enough to care about the girl just the same. And the girl is happier being with her beloved than to remain as a lonely candlelight.

Oh wow. The art direction is incredible here; it feels like a very dark venice-esque place, and I love it. The animation can, at times, be a touch choppy, but overall it's brilliant. Good show, good show.
Pretty sure those're supposed to represent darkness. When the candle was snuffed, my idea is that all light that ceases creates darkness. Hence, she became one of his kind. Darkness scatters under light, but the theme was to see a bit of darkness curious about walking in the light. I would assume, using the rules I just stated, that if he stayed with the flame when he got burned, he would have been totally burned and would become a bit of light himself. Of course, this would, ironically, be the darker ending because it would mean the library would burn since he has to have something sustaining him. As it is, this has the brighter ending. Kind of a cool thing to think about, huh?

It looks like it was a lot of conjecture, but I would guess that if he were to revert to a piece of light/fire himself instead of her converting to a small piece of darkness, then he would be a flame that is not on a candle. As a result he would start burning the books around him. I don't think I had put too much thought into this original comment as they are still parts that don't quite make sense, so it would probably be easier just to chalk up what I said to barely sensical rambling.

Now she's able to move about freely. So extinguishing a flame is freeing them from a candle prison. That's how I see it anyway.

Many people only light candles when a loved one dies, I light them for life too.

If he hadn't loved her, he would've abandoned her when she became a shadow as well. But he didn't leave her, he mourned for her when she was extinguished and was happy when he saw she was alive. That was the most heartfelt, touching and beautiful short I've ever had the pleasure of watching. No regrets of seeing this on my recommendations list. I almost cried towards the end and I actually felt the emotions of the shadow man and the candlelight.
