- During the early 90s, Sonic The Hedgehog was one of the most marketable and popular characters around. And in 1993, with the much anticipated release of Sonic 3 coming up the following year, Sonic hype was at an all time high. In fact, Sonic was so popular that he was given a spot among the top choice characters at the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! However, the Sonic balloon has a pretty interesting history with the parade, as he has made many appearances throughout the years, and has become pretty famous, or, perhaps infamous with fans of the parade. So, let's talk about it!

Good for you back in 2012 I was 6 years old and didn't know what the hell a sonic the hedgehog was and I live in the philippines so I definitely couldn't experience it.
UPDATE: After eight years since being retired, the Sonic balloon will officially make a grand return for the 95th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2021, in conjunction with the 30th anniversary celebrations of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
Along with the debut of the Lori balloon during the 96th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year which Nickelodeon and Viacom asked NBCUniversal to debut the balloon version of the character from The Loud House (2016) in addition to the return of the Sonic the Hedgehog balloon

Update: The Sonic balloon from 2011-2013 reappeared in 2021 for the 30th anniversary. Important announcements include mentioning Colors Ultimate while playing the Colors orchestral title screen.

You know there's some really sick irony in *lampposts* being that balloon's worst enemy, given they usually RESPAWN him.
Also I'll be honest, given 2011 was meant to promote Sonic Generations, what the hell was *Splash Hill* doing as the theme when that song is the only existence Sonic 4 even has in Generations? I don't really think too many kid Sonic fans were going to know of it too well when it was digital only in the mid-7th gen. I guess someone just kinda picked a theme out of a hat and never bothered changing it.
I mean...come on, Modern Sonic's flying through *a city* use Escape From the City! No I don't care it's the wrong coastline. =P

actually saw the parade irl this morning. when i realized my main man sonic would not be attending, i wondered why i even came
nowadays macy thanksgiving parades don't want to feature sonic, this is because of high winds on late November where the parade usually takes place, the wind makes it very likely that sonic will eventually pop.

Sounds kind of complicated and hard to make but seeing from some of the balloons with multiple characters on them, such as the Trolls balloon they can probably do it.

In a podcast he had with ls mark and Veronica. he said that they shredded the first Greg heffley balloon and Macy ask him to sign a piece of the balloon then later he said they’ll give it out for the 100th anniversary. So I’m curious did Macy ask other cartoon creators to do the same thing like Jeff did. If so how long did Macy did it for because if they did it for this long we might autograph from people who are no longer with us.

Sonic was unfortunately absent this year. We did get Pikachu who I think has been MIA for while, which is nice. Honestly Mario never being in the parade is surprising given his sheer popularity and iconic nature. But considering Angry Birds and Skylanders have been in the parade....Yeah I don't really know what qualifies a character.
I don't recall Pikachu being MIA. Pikachu has pretty much appeared every year.

A big smile appeared on my face everytime the music begins with the original sonic balloon. Its got a magical feeling to it, seeing him fly there. I could imagine myself being sooo excited for this when I was young, sadly, I live nowhere near these events take place. But its always nice to see them in videos.

It's a GOOD thing Sonic wasn't in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade because in 1997 other than at least 3 were cut. Cat In The Hat put someone in coma ua-cam.com/video/hf_NahDOzDE/v-deo.html. Also Macy's usually keeps the older models as seen i many images they still have character that have been the parade since the early 2000's. Last the reason the people were dancing to the Sonic was because Sonic was most likely going to be in the 2014 Parade but wasn't due to how negative Sonic Boom was seen!(Sonic Boom the game NOT the TV show and comics in my opinion are pretty good)
I bet the reason for sonic not appearing this year was because of the negative views on forces.
Not all of Sonic Boom was negative, Fire & Ice and the Sonic Boom TV show actually got positive views, also its nice seeing Sonic in a parade hopefully he'll return someday.
He was supposed to appear in 1997, but was damaged the night before and did not get displayed.
