As a teenager living just 30 minutes from the Yser, this makes me happy. WW1 is still being rememered a lot in this area, it is a shame that most other teenagers don't really care about history. I think that Sabaton captured the situation really well. Greetings from West-Flandres and the Kingdom of Belgium.
I mean here in The Netherlands the people at my school were asking since the first year when WW2 was coming as a subject in history, so there certainly is a lot of interest in that. But i do agree that WW1 gets overshadowed really easily by the one that came after maybe it has to do with the fact that we didn't particepate but it does get taught along with WW2. WW1 is just really easily overshadowed because we mostly look at the consequences it had and because WW2 had an impact on the entire world (WW1 dealt with a lot of countries too but not on the scale that WW2 did). And this is apparent in the fact that i didn't know what the fields of verdun were and that i didn't know about Yser or the fact that there were tanks in WW1, but did already know about D-day, Bastogne, Stalingrad, The battle of Britian and the battle of berlin.
As someone from Belgium, this really hits me hard, how they made this song so accurately, a small country sacrifing a lot and even flooding its own land just to slow down the germans... I love this song so much
A royal fighting as a soldier, a king who stood to the end. A battle marked the end of a contest. The end of the race to the sea, where King Albert of the Belgians stood.
When I read about the song, I thought this song would be about the British going to the sea. When I found out that this was going about the Battle of the Yser, I was gladly surprised! I am Belgian, so to find out that this is the second time Sabaton sings about us, it's humbling... They really should go and write an album, with nothing but Belgian stories! Vive La Belgique! Lang Leve België!
Resist and bite (battle fr the ardennes), the price off a mile( passendale) the unkillable soldier (half Belgian half Irish) race to the sea. In Flanders fields. Screaming eagles mentiones Bastogne. I might forget another.
The amount of shivers I got from this song is inhuman. Hands down my favorite song in the album, everything else is close second! God damn, I can't believe it. I'm so happy I could cry. Thank you Sabaton! 🤟🏻❤️
My Great-Grandmother immigrated from Belgium (Wallonia) after World War II. Her parents actually lived through both German invasions and occupations of Belgium. Apparently they thought the one in World War I was worse, but they were Catholic, and so lucky enough to only have their house occupied. (I've been to that house a good few times, actually) But anyway - point is I'm proud of my Belgian heritage and this song really gets me pumped. Twice Belgians, including my ancestors, had their country overrun for a dispute they had no stake in. And twice, the Belgians held firm. "No more of our country lost; The line will be held at all cost" indeed.
@@gillesmarchal5251 yep. As a Reformed Christian my view is that sometimes God blesses nations with such amazing leaders in times of war or other hardships.
There's a story about Albert, I don't know if it's true or not but it is said that when Germany started to march into Belgium the many ministers wanted to surrender right away but King Albert rode into the room on a horse and said that Belgium will not surrender and that if the ministers were taking this decision he was taking over the leadership of the country.
so yes and no he did not mount a horse but when the question of letting the Germans pass it was asked a part of the government wanted so he came back and said: I take control of the armies and if you are not disagree I'll take the lead in the country (sorry for broken English but I'm bad at English)
Knowing how king Albert fighted side to side with his soldiers. I wouldn't be surprised if he did that. And honestly, what if Belgium didn't resist? Then France would have been secretly attacked and the ending of ww1 could have been way more different.
@@insertcoolnamehere6293 That is true. America took its time to get involved (and in all fairness, it took a shitton of propaganda to get Americans to support the war).

When speaking of the great war, especially the western front, I think most people tend to forget that Belgium played a role in it. It's really sweet to hear about it in true Sabaton form. The subject matter alone was enough to give me the chills, oh boy!
I think most people forget that Germany would've won the war if Belgium let them through. The Germans were a warmachine, but they got clogged up for a month. Losing the element of surprise, losing the momentum and losing all the railways that the Belgians bombed themselves that they needed for the Schlieffen Plan.
@@thetrain47539 Exactly. So much destroyed and sacrificed for their homeland, but necessary to stop the invaders. This is why the "smaller" theatres of war should never be forgotten, because they played a larger part than most can imagine.
The city of Liége was awarded the Légion d'Honneur for having slow down the German advance in 1914. Also, Belgium never fully joined the Entente. Thus not participating in any allied offensive, which maintained the loses of the army very low compared to other countries. Oh, and fun fact at the beginning of the war, Belgium was having the same army size than the UK.
@@webley_mark Note, due to a treaty with the Netherlands of 1835, Belgium couldn't have an official army. What fought in the beginning of the war againt the German empire was actually a militarised police force.
Awesome, i live 5 min from te river Yser in West-Flanders. I heard that Sabaton had visited Diksmuide along the Yser and discovered the story about the deliberate flooding of the Yser. My grand-grand father was belgian soldier and lost his leg in this war, and was surprisingly saved by the german medics. Like most wars, it's not the hatred between nations people, but the cruelty of a tyrant who cause all the misery
Do you understand WW1? Do you think it was like WW2? Cause being fair Kaiser Wilhelm II was not a tyrant, he was incompetent but not a tyrant. He did not cause the war, yes he invaded Belgium out of nowhere but again that was his incompetents and a roadway to France, No country can be blamed for WW1, it just happened, it was inevitable.
There is a fourth type of king. The kings who refuse to abandon their home. This king was of the fourth type. Of the same type as the legendary Léonidas of Sparta.
I have listened to this song easily over a hundred times now, and it never fails to draw a tear from my eyes. The sheer bravery, the hopelessness, and then to have your King come to the front line himself, to have his wife supporting the nurses. That is how you lead, from the front, with your men. And then to basically have your King tell you "This far men, this far, and no further!", it's a toss up for me between this song and "Resist and Bite", which is my favorite song about the brave Belgians. Thank you Sabaton for creating epic music about epic people and events!

Thank you so much for giving credit to what the small Belgian Army under the direct command of King Albert I, has achieved in 1914 by making a defensive fall back to the River Ijzer, slowing down the Germans buying the French time to establish a stronger defensive position. The Belgian Army held this position until the end of the War in 1918, a small stretch of Belgium soil in an area that became known to the World as "Flanders Fields". Proud as a dutchman to see that the belgians deployed a tactic similar to ours during the napoleonic era, we called it the waterlinie (waterline) which pretty much meant flooding our low lands to stop a further push. (just a shame that one of those harshest winters attackers are always stopped by chose to actually freeze the water so attackers could cross)
I actually suggested this a while ago as my great grandfather fought at the Yser. While I doubt this came to be because of my suggestion, I am very happy you made a song about this.
"So long as we stand, we hold. So long as we hold, we are not yet lost. So long as we are not yet lost, the city is not yet lost. So long as the city is not yet lost, we stand." -Empress Merisava, a character I based off of the Soldier-King of the Belgians, during the First Battle of Mizu
I've been lucky to be given the uniform of a belgian general ( became general after the war ) that fought as a medic/soldier on the trenches of yser from 1914 to 1918. He received many awards including the fire cross, a very prestigious award given to those who survived for more than 32 months in the mud of the trenches. This soldier had often recalled how he saw on many occasion King Albert the 1st amonside his men in the trenches.
One little thing I discovered : Some days before and after this strategy, French Britannians, considered bad units (because they were in the French naval forces) surprised French and German commanders by holding around 50 000 Germans (there was 6500 Britannians). Moreover, after the flooding, Britannians troops (that were highly qualified for naval battles) made swimming raids on German boats and position. In the end, they didn't hold the city for 4 days like the French commanders asked, they held it for 3 weeks.
First we had resist and bite for the Chasseur Ardennais holding the Ardennen for vital time and now we have the race to the sea about the 1st, 2nd and 5th division (Gent Antwerpen and Mons) that held the IJzer untill 1918. My Swedish is a bit rusty but. Vi tackar för denna ära

Although I am Dutch and joke a lot about the Belgians they are and always will be family and I have nothing but respect for them when it comes to both World Wars. And when I say family I mean that literally, looking through the records of my family a distant relative of mine (not sure how far removed) served in the 8th Line Infantry and died in 1914 in Boninne during the Siege of Namur. So as I said, nothing but respect
@@Aceshot-uu7yx The Netherlands stayed neutral during the entire war. Might be called a cowardly action, but considering they're right next to a much larger Germany (and we see what happened to the Netherlands in WW2), I don't blame them. Actually the original Schlieffen Plan called for violating Dutch neutrality as well and invading through both the Netherlands and Belgium, but someone in the German High Command watered down the plan and only invaded Belgium and not both countries.
I wish people weren’t prone to become evil tyrants because serving a King sounds much more honorable (and badass) than serving politicians. The latter feels grimy.
That’s mostly due to history having many badass leaders and kings who led in the frontlines Unfortunately there were also many kings who were just as corrupt and useless, born into ruling rather than from leadership Having presidents on the frontline again would be a huge morale boost for any soldier *cough ukraine*

Ik ben het helemaal met je eens, broer uit Vlaanderen (man uit Henegouwen)
Facts, its so sad that so many don't even bother to learn of the brave soldiers that fought.
I, as a teenager, feel the same.
A cog in the war machine? this line is even better when you learn who came up with the plan of flooding the river: His name was Karel Cogge. Superb

Sabaton is the one band which raised my love for war stories so high
A royal fighting as a soldier, a king who stood to the end. A battle marked the end of a contest. The end of the race to the sea, where King Albert of the Belgians stood.
That whole sentence is so epic
When I read about the song, I thought this song would be about the British going to the sea. When I found out that this was going about the Battle of the Yser, I was gladly surprised! I am Belgian, so to find out that this is the second time Sabaton sings about us, it's humbling... They really should go and write an album, with nothing but Belgian stories! Vive La Belgique! Lang Leve België!
Honestly, I hope Sabaton has the chance to make concept albums about every nation lol.
Resist and bite (battle fr the ardennes), the price off a mile( passendale) the unkillable soldier (half Belgian half Irish) race to the sea. In Flanders fields. Screaming eagles mentiones Bastogne. I might forget another.

Thank you for sharing your story.

It's true.
It sounds like something he would do, and even if it's bullshit, it's awesome so I choose to believe it.
so yes and no he did not mount a horse but when the question of letting the Germans pass it was asked a part of the government wanted so he came back and said: I take control of the armies and if you are not disagree I'll take the lead in the country (sorry for broken English but I'm bad at English)

Sabaton, the only band that every song sounds good but there's always something similar between all of them.
And that’s the problem… all their newer songs start to sound too similar to one another. Recycled lyrics, recycled flow, recycled music. They need to hire a writer cause in an album of 10 songs to only have 2 or 3 originals while 7 others sound similar… well it just comes off as lazy writing.
