About the song:
Way back in March 2005 I had the honour of supporting a musical hero of mine. I had long revered the music of Chris Whitley ever since Nathan Adair, my bandmate at the time, lent me the album Dirt Floor. The music had some serious soul and mystique to it. It was one of the first albums I ever heard that seemed to effortless mix the sound of old delta-blues records with complex prose and a delivery that was passionate beyond words - no production bells and whistles, just a one take, one microphone recording that captured a single moment in time. Needless to say, I fell in love and from that day on, I took a real deep dive into all of Whitleys work.
So when I received a telephone call from John at The Vanguard in Sydney asking if I would like to open for Chris, I was stoked! John knew I was a big fan of Chris' work and it was a real honour to be asked to join the bill, especially as Jeff Lang, my other childhood musical hero was also on the bill.
I don't remember a lot about my own set, only that I was mega nervous, but I do remember receiving a reasonable response from the crowd and a compliment from Chris and Jeff after the set which was beyond anything I could have asked for! What I clearly remember however, was standing at the back of the room and taking in every nuanced breathe of Chris' delivery. Jeff Lang joined him at the end of the evening to complete a wonderful evening.
Anyway, up until now, I've always been hesitant to cover a Whitley song, but recently I've been diving back into playing my resonator guitar and this song just fell upon my fingers.
I hope you enjoy my version of Chris' classic 'Dirt Floor'.

Hi Stringy! Long time no speak. Lovely to hear from you. Yeah, all is well here in Europe - aside from the Corona virus keeping live music at a stand still. Looks like another year of live streaming and making music in my studio, but at least I have that outlet. Hoping 2022 will be a bit kinder to us all.
