You've heard about the pocket? Perfect example of how a rhythm section makes a performance transcend. Fluid bass and effortless drums steering the course. .
It sounds like an old spiritual, but this song was written by the singer, Aoife. One of my favorite young talents. If you enjoy, check her work the the Boston based band "Crooked Still". Plenty here on UA-cam.
I'm so glad Aoife decided to record this (she said in an interview that she almost didn't because Allison's was so good). Love this arrangement, and there's something to be said for hearing the songwriter's rendition of their own song
Well-crafted song, well sung, well played both by Aoife and by her fellow musicians. The guy playing bass is a tasteful player, and has a nice tone out of his archtop bass.
This has become one of my favorite songs with its soulful lyrics and driving beat. When the bass starts to play under the guitar and voice, I start getting teary eyed, it's so beautiful. I love the Krauss version, which I heard first and is more fully orchestrated with steel guitar and mandolin, but Aoife's version is wonderfully sung and played with simple elegance. Great song!
Someone lead me to her best songs. I love her voice but I have not found a song other than Crossing Muddy Waters that I really like. Recommendations please
My other favorites of hers are Thursday's Child and Fire Engine, and she also does the lead vocals on Ryland (Under the Apple Tree) which is a really good and unique I'm With Her song.
On a whim, I decided to listen to this again since I first discovered it a month ago. That smile she gives away around 1:40 is just beautiful. She's saying "Daym, this sounds good." And it does. That bass is dancin' with her; the drums are the carpet underneath their feet. Beautiful playing. I'll trade this for 10,000 mediocre pop songs any day of the week.
Colorado Paul Thanks for letting me know this, a good Irish-American girl. : )) I know Allison doesn't write songs...she's an interpreter, now I know the who and how of the origins of this song. I appreciate your letting me know, Paul.
Ah, it's A-L-I-S-O-N K-R-A-U-S-S, born July 23, 1971. Allison Beth Krause, 19, died on May 4, 1970 in the shootings at Kent State University. One of the "Four Dead in Ohio".
Her voice is incomparable. And, another fine example of how important a drummer is. Ringo was always the most underappreciated Beatle, and yet, he was the foundation.
+Andrew McClurg Knew it was a Martin 00 something but wasn't sure just which. So thank you Andrew McCllurg for letting us know! I adore musicians that know their instruments..
+roadie3124 My father played a 1943 Martin O-17 which is considered a "parlor guitar", also a mahogany instrument. It has a small body but the wood rings so beautifully and has such an incredibly full sound. I simply adore that guitar. Martin guitars are very special to me, its great to see them getting used properly!
LOVE this lady and her band and never heard of her before.. just amazing to listen to. Does she not sing with Sarah Jarosz some? Good music all around!
+Greg Williams I never question anyone's taste in music, it is after all so profoundly subjective. In these days of being assaulted by hacks like Adele when record companies are trying to shove that dreck down our collective throats, I'm surprised anytime someone is less than enthusiastic with a singer like Aoife. I'm hesitant to say anything is better or worse (except of course with Adele), but rather, different. I'm GENUINELY curious who you think is better. I'm ALWAYS looking for new music, so please don't take this as an insult. I'm presently a BIG fan of Wye Oak, and Courtney Barnett by way of example.
Love this singer. With the right backing she will be on top of the scene.
I've listened to this 1000 times and I still could listen to it 1000 more.
Love every note, Aoife! SIng on and see you soon!

Silver on bass really carries it along from start to finish. Just enough without overwhelming the tune.
Smooth sounding flat-wound strings with a highly talented bassist are like honey to the soul.
What?..he does OVERWHELM the tune..The bass is obnoxious.
@@michaelsteven1090 cannot agree - great bass sound.
@@allanbriggs807 The bassist is magnificent. Roundness of his sound is something to behold and very complimentary as a good bassist could be.
Finest voice in America today! Thank you Aoife!!!!
I'm so glad Aoife decided to record this (she said in an interview that she almost didn't because Allison's was so good). Love this arrangement, and there's something to be said for hearing the songwriter's rendition of their own song
The bass and drums are doing exactly what they should do to support and highlight the inspired singing and fingerstyle guitar playing of Aoife...
Well-crafted song, well sung, well played both by Aoife and by her fellow musicians. The guy playing bass is a tasteful player, and has a nice tone out of his archtop bass.
I guess I am addicted. After needing this song once a day, Iam now up to twice.

And Jacob Silver on the bass. Very sweet!
+Hans Warner Didn't know who he was but he's amazing! Thanks for the heads up!
+Hans Warner Thanks for letting us know! He's a wonderful bass player. And that's a gorgeous instrument, too. Quality stuff all around!
I thought so. just HAD to share!! She's got everything she does down to a science!! Love that voice too!! Geoff, we all know who has great taste now!!
What is he playing? Such a warm sound.
@@gregstorkwilson2745 I think it's a Harmony H22: harmony.demont.net/guitars/H22/110.htm
Aoife has an infectious smile... :)
I always love her voice and the music she plays. Just beautiful - and that bass sounds fabulous under her voice & guitar.
Great cover. Great arramgement. That bass is epic.
Aoife is just an amazing presence on stage.
Someone lead me to her best songs. I love her voice but I have not found a song other than Crossing Muddy Waters that I really like. Recommendations please
LB basically everything on the album this song is from is great, the album is Fossils. Also her stuff in I’m with her is amazing

The old music is still alive, though one day we all won't be... As long as someone sings & plays it, that much will be right with the world.
Yes!
I've always treasured Allison Krause's rendition of this song, this one is now paired in my mind's 'ear' with it!!
+Swede McGuire Aoife wrote it! She is amazingly talented but too modest to admit it.

As Aoife grows as a performer, shes coming into her own, more and more, with each passing year.
I tried to find a CD with this done by Aoife O'Donovan, but no luck yet. I like this faster beat. 🥁
Silky voice

A pefect example for less is more.
love it!
Most Lovely! Kind Thanks and Many Blessings! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Love the song and her voice is beautiful. But where did she get that guitar? What is it? It sounds wonderful.
+roadie3124 That's a Martin she's been playing a while, I'm not sure of the model though.
+roadie3124 The guitar is a Martin 00-15. It has mahogany sides and top. It has a very clear and distinct notes, and is good for blues.
+Andrew McClurg Knew it was a Martin 00 something but wasn't sure just which. So thank you Andrew McCllurg for letting us know! I adore musicians that know their instruments..

+Andrew McClurg Looking at this again, this may well be a 000-15. They are similar to the 00-15, but the 000-15 is slightly wider.
❤
Number one UNDER-RATED talent!!
Really good, thank you for sharing.
Outstanding love this
Nice song.. Great performance!
Great song, lovely voice, and she took the time and effort to learn how to play a guitar properly.
very nice and strong, thank you so much for sharing!
Is it weird that I see some Jacqueline Du Pre in her?
thothbaboon Are you saying she is a cannibal?
59acres LOLno the sound and style
thothbaboon Ahhhh thanks for clearing that up.
59acres wait, what??
Brianna Eason Damn cannibals!

+Katherine Goard She sang with Sarah Jarosz and Sara Watkins as 'I'm with Her'. She also sang on 'Goat Rodeo Sessions' with YoYo Ma among others.
DANIEL KERRIGAN Thanks Mr. Kerrigan. I'll look that up and take a listen!
+Katherine Goard Be sure to check out her band Crooked Still!
Roger Cerasoli Thank you for telling me Mr. Creasoli. I will make a point to look her band up today. :)
Her duet with Sarah in the Aspens is pure art. Song is called Some Tyrant.
Lovely!

Wow..where have I been. First I have ever seen her. She reminds me of Allison Kraus. Love it!!
Alison recorded this a couple of years back.
Such a beautiful voice but the bass is way too loud
Nope, it was perfect.
Exellante!
❤️
Good, Average only. There is better.
