This is just stunning, brilliant. I've had my eyes on this kit for some time.
Thank you so much for all of your information and hard work. Truly top

Great info. Thanks for sharing Kevin. 👍
I'm busy assembling my X-statiks now... Might be finished in the next couple of months if my woodworking skills can keep up... First time I've ever built a speaker!
I'm happy to find out about the burn - in. Don't want to invest months of weekend effort only to find I'd built a couple of lemons.
    Thanks again.

UPDATE - today has hit 100 hours of continuous brown noise burn in!
Last Saturday was my first listen on completion of the finished kit and I was so disappointed I just went for a walk after suffering their hard sound for half an hour. I was depressed about the sound after all that work!
Today I am ecstatic about my X-Statiks, what an amazing difference the burn in has made.
The hardness has almost completely disappeared
The sound stage is vast, wide, deep and transparent, the speakers are almost 'not there'
The clarity and air is the nearest thing to the large Martin Logan ELS's that I have heard.
The sweet spot is not as restricted as the ELS's - quite wide
    Acoustic guitar sounds stunning.
This, I think is the start of a love affair.............I look forward to experimenting with placement and blending in a sub woofer
Its a good sign when I keep playing more and more tracks to see what these speakers reveal,
foot tapping and humming along is just instinctive.
just WOW........cant find the words ;-)

@@kevinmcgrath3591 it was well deserved. Back in the day we would connect a 5000 watt subwoofer straight to a wall socket to break it in. It became a thing people thought you had to do. Then all the manufacturers came out saying it was unnecessary. However the parameters will change on any driver after the soft parts have broken in. Its my understanding that the electronics only take a few minutes to break in? Love Dannys work too. Ya deleted it, went toooo far! lol

Thanks Kevin and yes they look great, the black Hammerite really is a stand out. I must say it seems to be a lot of messing around and time consumming to do the burn in this way. The x-statiks and your design are still on my short list of next projects ( just finished building the Troesl Gravesen " Discovery 861 " kit )

Yes. Well they sound awful on day one and if it takes 400 hours use to sound right then that’s years for me. If you want my CNC cutting file for 18mm mdf just ask. The USA plans in inches are no use in Europe. Hope your 861’s sound great 👍

That is a question for Danny, I imagine it would not match the crossover design, cost about $400 extra and possibly has never been tested as a system. I just used Danny's full kit, unaltered.

The breaking of components and loudspeakers has become such a contested subject. If you can shed any light on your experiences, please do. I’ve read only one report of a listener measuring the bass response of a loudspeaker before and after break-in. Other than that, it’s just been “say so.” I personally don’t doubt it’s value. But so few have experienced it and claim it doesn’t exist.

" I’ve read only one report of a listener measuring the bass response of a loudspeaker before and after break-in" - can you tell us if there was a huge difference or not? By Wednesday of this week (15th Sept 2021) my X Statiks will have run their 'burn in' continuously for 100 hours. I will play the same song (the new ABBA tune) to see if the girls voices are now bearable.

@@kevinmcgrath3591 The report was that his Polk R700 speakers started with an in room bass response leveling off at 40 Hz. After running in, he stated that he measured an in room bass response down to 22 Hz. Now, how he did the measurements wasn’t stated. But my point is, that was the one individual I’m aware of that had some semblance of proof. Myself? It’s in the listening. You obviously have a handle on this sort of thing so I thought you’d be a good one to ask.

@@greenbeginner3353 to have a bottom end change of 18Hz is very little compared to the miracle i need. The harshness and non musicality / lifeless nature of them was depressing. reminded me of the old KEF Ref 104's I had. I have other speakers by JBL, Sony and Bang & Olufsen and have been to HiFi exhibitions where I was blown away by Martin Logan gear, so I think I know when something is some way good ;-), tomorrow will tell all at the end of 100 hours burn in. Or just start using them and don't crank them for a while. Do you run your new lawnmower for for 20 hrs or more when you buy one ? this burn in thing has gotten out of hand. Of course they need to break in and the sound will change just don't hammer on them for a while. some people do just the opposite and crank the s. . T out of speakers to break them in. JUST use them.I prefer to use the oldest leftover lamp cords I can find and splice them together for speaker wires. The internal aging gives the sound a patina you just can't replicate & by the way I do break my speakers in at 10 hz or the lowest frequency they can stand at low volumes for as long as I can stand it before I put them into use midrange and tweeters don't require this they're going to do what they do regardless it's mechanical not some mystical magic

    • @kevinmcgrath3591
      @kevinmcgrath3591  2 роки тому +2

Yes, its mechanical, the stiff spider needs some use to create elasticity in its resin, thats about it. Its easy to say 'just use them' if they sound reasonable, they didnt, I couldnt tolerate them. They were beautiful after the brown noise burn in. Both ways work, my way avoided the slow pain of the hard sound. I cant say i would go with the alchemy of the spliced light chords though, have fun !
