  • Fae, fairies, fay folk, the good folk, the kind folk, they have so many names and yet we know very little about them. Who are the Fae? Where did they come from? What are they exactly? And why are they all hot in today's fiction. Let's talk about that.

    Sarah: “It bit me!”
Hoggle: “What did you expect fairies to do?”
Sarah: “I thought they did nice things! Like granting wishes.”
Hoggle: “Shows what you know, don't it.” (Proceeds gassing faries with bug spray.)
Labyrinth is still a great movie.

Oh, I know about the whole "autistic changelings" thing! Cuz I'm autistic, and I really like fantasy stories. I personally love the idea that I'm actually a magical creature. I guess it's easier to think that way when you're living in a time where you won't get burned alive or left to die in the woods for it, though.

I agree if we autistic people clearly aren't normal we must have some ties to the supernatural. However I also glad l don't live in the past where they would burn "witches and evil fae"

I've always loved the sheer *concept* of the Fae, they're just a wildcard in any plot.
For any DMs, if you want a plotline or event to occur and you can't justify it - A Fae Did it.
    1. Why? We can never truly understand the Fae. 2. No but to such extent? Fae think outside of mortal limits 3. Seriously why?? They were bored/annoyed and left unattended.

I would say that there is a movie that shows the fae in an accurate way:The spiderwick chronicles. There were brownies, hobgoblins, changelings, elves and the accompanying field guide published had drawings that are often used as background photos in videos like yours.

You mentioned about 1+ hour videos.
I do love the longer videos, but I tend to have to watch them in umpteen parts thanks to my stupid work schedule at the stupid hospital.
These half an hour videos are ideal for me personally.
Also, Witcher III In A Nutshell video when, please...?

That thought did cross my mind. 50 hours of Witcher I and 30 hours of Witcher II can be condensed relatively easily (says me, who's never done it 😬) but my most complete playthrough of the Witcher III ran at 310 hours.
That's going from a peanutshell to a coconutshell.

I admit that I never cared too much about fae/fairy creatures, until I discovered the RPG nook Changeling: The Dreaming. The book not only has interesting lore on each of the playable creatures, but the book itself is an incredible work of art that I'd recommend to anyone that like fae, rpg, or simply creative drawings. I never got to play it, but there's a ton of potential in it.

Only video game I can think of that's about fae is Folklore, a very good but fairly obscure RPG for the PS3. It's basically what happens when someone takes traditional Celtic myths about the fae and crosses that with Pokemon and turns into a dungeon crawler. A game I would definitely recommend...if it wasn't so hard to find these days

If you are interested in video games with fae in it, I would recommend Kingdom of Amalur. Your character is a mortal elf or human, but the immortal Seelie and Unseelie are central to the entire story. It's a well regarded RPG that got a remake recently.

There are some fun armchair anthropological theories about the origins of the fae and various of their quirks. For example, the weakness to cold iron could be tied back to the success and rise to dominance of iron-using cultures in the bronze-to-iron transition. Or there's the ancient traditions of hospitality that mean that sharing food with someone means neither of you is allowed to harm the other (for a limited period), which could explain a weakness to bread.

One of the RPGs you can play in the World of Darkness (that Vampire the Masquerade is part of) is one where you play a human kidnapped and replaced by a Fae. I've never played it so I can't speak to the mechanical side but I like the concept so much.

    1. Oh of course the Jesus folk came in to complicate matters!
    2. Workers would likely be better off if the Fae replaced Jeff Bazos.
    3. Gold star and a sticker for using panels from Sandman, Jinzee.
    4. ...Orgies you say?
    5. Peter Pan sounds dark as shit, man! No wonder why A.C. Wise wanted to do adult retellings.
    6. Can't help but think about that Torchwood episode that centered around Fae and how their existence in the Doctor Who universe is far from the weirdest shit they've put out.
    7. Any thoughts on the comic series Fables? Bill Willingham's questionable worldviews and attitudes have come under reevaluation over the past few years with emphasis placed on how said views crept into his most well known series.
    8. "Literally a sugar baby"
    9. Autism equaled fae apparently
    10. A future video on exorcisms might be cool if admittedly depressing in places.
    11. VAMPIRE FAIRIES!!!

    13. Keep on rocking the blue hair!

Neat! The impression that I got after doing some casual internet research is that it’s one of those properties that was hugely popular when it came out but as time went on people started to think “oh wait, that was a weird moment or five”. Not to mention that Willingham made an ass of himself at a convention panel a few years ago and one can easily find reports on it.

People used to call me a "germophobe" but I sat on a puppy too hard when I was about 3, so... I know a woman who needs a ride to Jerusalem. Someone had to play "advocate" one more time before Judgement Day, and it had to be a person of certain lineages. I exist for a reason, and I'm already in my 40s. Hell needs closure, imo. We're tired of dead loved-ones. We want them back. Amen? God's name is YHWH Yehovah, and His Son in Heaven is Yeshua, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, who died on the Mount of Olives to save us all from Hell. Wake up. It's 4/18/2024, humans, etc. We were instructed to read the Bible and pray. Do you say HIS NAME? Yeshua. KING of kings and LORD of lords. AMEN. 🎉 HE TOLD US TO REPENT.

If you are looking for modern fae stories, I highly recommend several books by Gene Wolfe. They run the gamut from other worldly to Arthurian and are fabulously written. These include:
The Knight and The Wizard (a duology)
    There are Doors
    Castleview
    The Sorcerer's House
As a bonus he was best buds with Neil Gaiman. Wolfe wrote the intro to one of the Sandman books. I also have a signed copy of "A Walking Tour of the Shambles", which they co-authored.

I've started playing another old favourite of mine that you might like. It's a PS1 JRPG called "Guardian's Crusade". You have a Fairy (called Nehani) who follows you around and gives you advice, you're escorting and looking after a baby monster that loks like a mini pink hippo-bunny-dragon and your extra party members are made up of living clockwork toys that you find on the way. It's a really cute but solid rpg.

I just finished it for the first time in about 20 years. I cried. A lot...
I think Baby summed it up when he said: "Splurk! Oik oik, plugdidledidle."
Maybe you had to be there...

Jinz! I love your videos. I finally figured out your intro music. It was pushing some unknown nostalgia button in my heart/brain, bringing back happy and contented feelings. FF8 was one of the best gaming experiences of my young life :) Thanks again for your great videos and the impromptu trips down memory lane! :D

Have you played or seen Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning? If you haven't you should check that one out. The Tuatha Deohn are some of the main villains and it has R.A. Salvatore creating the game world and Todd Mc Farlane working on the art. I'd be surprised if you haven't heard of those two. :)

I did play Amalur! It was buggy and unfinished at the time though, unfortunately.

@@ProperBird Give it another try if you find the time. I think you'd like the lore, though if you don't have time to play it then at least look up some of the poetry and stories left on the lorestones by the Summer and Winter courts. :)

11:53 Why do I get the sensation that I have seen that scene on Berserk? Or at least the part about the entrails going around trees sounds familiar.

Berserk has a lot of entrail related imagery to be fair.

As always a fabulous lore video going into great depth. Thankyou for in A way a great story, considering you'd be great at audio book story telling. Still think Koudelka is underated as a classic, same for pararaite eve 1.
