This is a TV special that I Produced/Directed way back in 2001. It's narrated by Canadian icon Gordon Pincent and features the talented work of many Nova Scotia Artists and Animators. It's been sitting dusty on a shelf for nearly two decades as I tried to figure out how to finance my efforts to upgrade the animation. I've since left the film industry to pursue my painting full-time so I wanted to release the show to the public. Every so often I hear from someone who had seen the show in whole or in part (it was previously on UA-cam broken down into clips) and it seemed well appreciated by other fairy lore enthusiasts. I spent several years researching fairy lore before pitching the documentary to CTV in Canada and over the years I have become something of an authority on fairy lore. While I'm not making documentaries any more, my fascination with folklore and mythology continues and deeply affects my fine art work. I grew a small garden in a place where people were not aware of its existence in a vacant lot in a city. It was obscured by a large fallen tree and blackberry brambles.
I created a tiny sanctuary for all of the birds and insects and my own pleasure. I was amazed by the quick and fleeting appearance of a little man who wore a suit of green and brown and wore a Red Cap. He was gone as fast as he appeared. Never a single sound. I felt so blessed with him visiting my secret piece of paradise. He had a Grey beard and bushy eye brows. He was always serious and surprised me. He was not anything like the Red Cap in the video. More like a elfin character.
It's sometimes believed that a red hat signified a solitary fairy but they weren't always as ill-tempered as the Redcap.
@@frankforrestall That is exactly what I experienced. I only had the pleasure of his visiting my hidden garden sanctuary. I never felt any harm or hostility. He did appear quickly and quickly he was gone. He didn't disappear, he jumped into the brambles and was out of sight.
I also had a strange meeting with a group of tiny little creatures who were in a bush on an island 🏝 😳 🤔, I didn't get a look at them, I think they were the size of insects. They were very vocal and giggling and making noises of glee and spontaneous delight and happiness. The Bush was isolated and moving with their moving around in the density of the branches. There was no wind or any one on the island but me.
I returned the next day and all was still and silent.
I have more odd experiences 😕 I feel very fortunate.

It was in a heavily populated city.
But it was a large vacant lot that was not easily accessible for walking and entering into. The fallen trees and the overgrowth of blackberry brambles and other types of obstructions kept people from exploring.
I did live on a deserted island in the
Gulf of Mexico. Off Big Coppet Key in the lower Keys near Key West.
It was called Snipe Point. I experienced quite a few extremely magical things in my time there.10 miles away from civilization and no fresh water or any shelter. It is a very interesting experience for me in survival mode. I had to lick the dew from the leaves of the mangroves every morning early enough to get my daily fill of water.
So many different things happened in this place of isolation and scarcity.
Life is a very magnificent experience for the pure essence of life with adventurous delight and joy.
The island in my experience with the giggles from the bush was in the
Florida Keys too.
It didn't have a name and was not a accessible except at low tide by swimming to it. It was in the Gulf of Mexico near Sugarloaf Key .I was living at the 7 mile marker at a place known as the Submarine Pits.
This was in the 1970s. It may be quite different now.
@@parry3231 i do miss the gulf. Thank you for talking with me about it. I've seen one thing in the Pacific Northwest that the only thing i can think it looked like was 2 fairies. I was at an isolated creek and when i walked around a bush and there was a tree with a branch about 5 feet off the ground that grew to the right, when i came around the bush i saw 2 tiny figures ( maybe 2 or 3 inches tall) that were sitting on the branch right over the water instantly jump and dive into the water. There may have been a distance of 6 feet between me and the figues when it happened
The Irish humor in this is phenomenal.
In Slavic mythology faries are depicted as beuatiful, but vengefull young women with long blond or black hair and long white or blue dress. They may have goat legs instead of human, have butterfly wings and armed with bow and arrow.
Though from Scotland, a flag is on display at the Dunvegan Castle, it was purportedly from Queen Titania, Queen of the fairies given to the McCleod Clan. The flag has magical properties that enable whomever possess the flag in war, becoming the victors. There are also other relics in the collection, if you research into this a bit, you will not be disappointed. Enjoyed your video, thank you.

I've watched this series somewhere else within UA-cam years ago as a kid. The artstyle and the storytelling was quite captivating for me, as if to represent a culture of some sort. And until now, I was actually looking for this video/s again for months! So, thank you...

I used to have some land in Oklahoma that used to be crow land. The crow said it was haunted and wouldn't go on it. It was full of all kinds of fae.
I called them the stars that follow. I have to say after a year of living with them when I left I was not sure what reality was. Some were good, some were bad, most indifferent. But all made reality much different than what it is outside of the woods.
I have many stories I could tell, it's this day just thinking about them, makes me wonder about the nature of reality and truly makes me wonder what in the hell happened in those woods!

Okay I'll tell the first story of my encounter with stars that follow.
In the fall of 2010 I bought some land in Oklahoma south of Tulsa barely north of okmulgee. I purchased some acreage to homestead on.
My friend Chris was with me and we cut a road so we could get my RV on to the land and situated.
After we got the RV on to our site we started a campfire, and had the lights from the RV. I made dinner and we were enjoying our evening. It was dark, but the moon was bright enough to shed light and we were excited. Our goal was to build a home here.
Shortly thereafter there were lights and circling us. At first there were only about half a dozen of these lights and literally within a minute of observing these lights we were surrounded by about a hundred of these lights. In our minds the only thing that makes sense washed the neighbors did not want us there and we thought it was a their intention to scare us away. It really was kind of comical. We tried talking to the lives, then yelling at the lights, but they persisted and nobody spoke back to us. My friend Chris crawled on top of the RV and pretended he had a gun.
And by this time I was really pissed off. I thought WTF, you're not going to scare me off from my own property I paid for this land. I picked up a large stick that had a good reach and would not break if it came in contact with something and went out into the crowd of lights and started yelling and chasing and swinging my stick at them. I was screaming this is my home, you don't belong here and get the f*** off my property. It really didn't take too long for me to realize that there was nothing behind these lights.
Like I said the moon was bright and we did have some visibility. All of the sudden it was like this switch turned off. There was almost even an audible click. You could almost hear it or feel it going click. At the sound of the click, the Moon, the stars, everything quit giving light and my flashlight quit working. Chris was still on top of the rvi and I was in the middle of the woods chasing these lights when all of the sudden, I was totally in the dark. No sense of direction. The lights were just gone. I could not even see my hand in front of my face but I could hear things running around me very close. Not just one or two things but the woods were full of things running around, right around me.
No I don't really scare easy because I've been able to see things my whole life. This time though I was more scared than I've ever been in my life. I knew someone, something was there, but I could not see it, I only know it was there.
I started screaming at my top the lungs for Chris to come find me. The moon or Stars were not there nor was my flashlight and it was pitch Black. It's only took a couple of minutes for Chris to find me but it felt like forever. My mind was going 100 miles a minute. I wondered if I would be in the dark forever. Would Chris be with me? Was I alone? Would I be there forever? Are these demons? Did I just go insane? Finally Chris found me. Thank God, I was still in this world.
We got back to the RV, put our campfire out, and went into the RV.
We had no explanation for what had just happened and the only logical answer was that the neighbors did not want us to be there. We knew there was nothing behind those lights but that didn't make any sense, so we stuck to The unwanted neighbors story.
Eventually, we realize that the neighbors had nothing to do with the lights.
We just know the lights were there and they would follow us through the woods. It didn't matter how fast we ran through the woods. the stars were always there.
It was not long after that that Chris and I we're doing a little stargazing. We were orienting ourselves with the Big Dipper and the North Star. While we were looking at the North Star,... The Big Dipper came down and literally chased us through the woods.
In the back of our mind, we're each wondering if we had gone crazy. At this point it wasn't something we even spoke to each other about. Individually we would see these things happen and know that we have to be crazy. We did not talk about it, even with each other. At least not for a couple of months.
I have to say, when we finally did start talking to each other about what we were seeing, it was such a relief to have someone else validate what you're seeing. That someone else is also seeing the same thing. Even if they're crazy. It's such a relief to feel that you're not alone. it's really reassuring. You know the saying , misery loves company? That's very true. We were so thankful that someone else collaborated what we were seeing and that we were both seeing same thing.
Anyway, that was our first evening at what we later dubbed " east of Jupiter "

Thanks for listening. I've only told this story and the other stories about the farm because it's way too far fetched. Who is going to believe this story and not think that we are totally insane or on some really good drugs.
That night was just the beginning though.

I’ve seen lights or maybe what was a ufo and actually have seen it what looked like stars being stationary in the sky just take off at the speed of, well, light. I believe you. Godspeed !

My Dad used to tell me that a ring of toadstools was a portal into the fairy realm, and if I stepped into it, I just might get trapped there. One day, I actually saw a ring of toadstools. I almost stepped into it, just to see what would happen, but I thought, nah...why tempt fate. 😁

Same here in Asia, it's a whole world of genie, to outsiders see you walking around in the ring but to you you're exploring their whole village almost similar to humans but cleaner and yes you may be trapped there for life.

Thankew so much 🥰 It's funny seeing it get so much attention so many years after it was made. I'd love to do more... I had planned to follow it up with "Giant Folio" and "Dragon Folio" but couldn't sell it to the broadcaster. It was a pretty substantial production: $500k budget, 8 month schedule and a team of 20 artists and animators.

Unlike the majority of similar You Tube presentations that feature a Robot Narrative accompanied by occasional still photos ( An idea probably invented by parents reading to their illiterate child and buying an extra copy of the book so the child can stare mindlessly at the picture on the book cover) this actually features some albeit primitive animated characterization. So it automatically elevates the presentation. You can hand over a cigarette and lighter to a chimp, but whether he successfully smokes the thing will determine whether he is of a functional IQ level to take care of himself without constant supervision
I think you've done a fantastic job. I really enjoyed it. The narrator is brilliant - script is great - some lovely animation - well researched. All in all a rather spiffing watch. Bravo. I genuinely hope you finf yourself in a position to make more. Tracy

Good to see a subtle dark humour running through this ( in keeping with the spirit of the Fae folk) .The beginning part with the guy falling off the cliff was gold, too! 😆 . edit: Finished watching. This was great! One question, though: Is a Merrow the same thing as a Selkie, then? I'm quite familiar with Selkies but not so much with Merrows. According to Froud and Lee's book 'Faeries', Merrow females "sometimes come ashore in the form of little hornless cattle". The same book mentions the seal-skin shedding ways of the Selkie, but there's no mention of Merrows having anything to do with seals, or coming ashore in human form. Other than that I'd heard that 'Merrow' is pretty much synonymous with 'Mermaid' in Ireland. Maybe they're all somewhat interchangeable terms depending on where you live? Anyway, I loved this video! Will watch again sometime.

In 1886 when Yeats was just 20 he wrote this poem while visiting Glencar Lake (Lock Ghleann A’ Chairthe) which is located north of Sligo in County Leitrim. Fed by Glencar Waterfall, it remains pristine and full of brown trout to this day. There are also remains of two early crannogs (man-made) island forts. In the 6th century, Saint Osnat, the sister of Saint Molaise of Devenish, founded a church here. “Ghlean A’ Charthe” is Irish for “valley of the rock”. This may have referred to a much older megalithic structure located near where the church of St. Osnat was first built.

It’s amusing how humans have to walk on eggshells and be overly cautious in order to appease fairies and other spirit beings because of how particular and temperamental they can be. But there’s never any stories of spirits needing to alter their behavior as to not displease a human.
I just found your site and am so happy I have. I learned a lot and look forward to watching your other videos.
I was wondering if you knew what agreement was made by the English Faeries after some battle in which they divided the country into specific zones in which certain types were welcome and certain fairy folk were prohibited. I read about it somewhere but can only remember it had something to do with Sussex and Devon (Dorset?).
I'm a Yank whose only knowledge of British fairies comes mostly from Arthur Rackham, Spencer, Shakespeare, and Tolkien. Aside from the brownies & banshees, I was under a lot of misconceptions. For instance, I thought for sure that an iron knife or horseshoe would get rid of a goblin or red cap. Thanks for the heads up.
BTW, I read Gaiman's book about American Gods last summer and learned about putting out milk for brownies but I'm so glad you warned us not to overdo with the gratitude. 😉

I grew up in the deep forests of Montana, long career in the woods in the Army as a Recon Cav Scout and today live in Idaho retired. Been around the Fae (Fairy folk/Little People) sense day one. Just like people there are the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Some are quite beautiful to behold really but honestly most are about the most terrifying things you could ever see. Don't hold it against them. To them we are pretty ugly and revolting as well as a matter of fact. Generally the Fae are indifferent to us in my experience. You want respect- give it. I do me and they do them. As long as they keep their hands to themselves and don't take my things (stealing/hording is a serious problem with them as a rule) without permission they seem to do the same. Boundaries theirs and mine are very, very important because taking lip from them is "NOT" ok. Just like anything look, don't touch. Today in the twilight of my life it has always worked for me. Being saved too is a great idea because there are some out there that most would consider quite evil and up to absolutely no good. They are just a part of His Creation so get used to it because the Fae and the Merfolk are on the rise right now due to the the proximity of the end times. Them hiding is kinda over now because judgement is here for "all" of us.

Those old stories didn't even try to be PC :P .. As a metaphor I look at it like this... Relationships require a certain level of sacrifice, but sometimes one side can sacrifice too much too fast, then the relationship does indeed feel like a prison. The inner child is hidden, neglected or lost under a series of compromises. Then one day something happens to stir the feelings of joy and freedom of youth and the structure of the relationship disintegrates. I'd say it's a cautionary tale to not let yourself or your partner give up too much of their spirit to be in the relationship.

Just curious as to what kind of faerie helps you in your gardens. Would this be Brownies?
Brownies maybe.. they're into household chores and such. I've heard of later Victorian lore that associates types of fairies with particular flowers; but I tend to see those as fictional as apposed to "true" folklore. With regards to old fairy lore I've heard a practice of leaving a patch of the garden to grow wild "for the fairies."

Why is it that any and everything that "Man" touches, he is not happy until he has power over it and ends up destroying it, so, so heartbreaking. Even if you don't, believe in fairies or any of the beings that just might exist, it is sad, how man just has to dominate all that surrounds him.
People have good imaginations.
I thought selkies were the seal people and merrow had like combs or hats they needed to return to the sea.

Love this video! I’ve got a question :) I’m trying to research Puck/Robin Goodfellow, (playing him in midsummernightsdream this summer), but I can’t figure out if he’s a sort of brownie or much more like a Pooka. I saw his name Robin Goodfellow slide across the screen in the intro for the brownie, but I know his other name, Puck, is derived from the words Pooka. So what exactly is he?
This question is mostly because I’m curious haha

I remember the conversation I had with myself deciding if Robin Goodfellow should be associated with the Brownie. I finally decided to put it there because in the early description of Puck in the play it suggests that he does come at night to help people with chores. It's hard to know what was in the bard's mind when he created that character; he may simply have been appropriating and merging the different folk beliefs into a single being but he does tap into the sense of the Faerie being mercurial in spirit. I think it's interesting that JRR Tolkien expressed some resentment in how Shakespeare represented Faerie as small and childish - and in seeming push-back - portrayed his Elves as higher, wiser more angelic than humans. He drew more from ancient Celtic Mythology than from English folklore.
If I had to speculate on what Puck is in the play I'd say he's an ancient nature spirit, once revered mighty and powerful, now reduced to a diminutive helper; his bottled-up identity crisis makes him an unpredictable trickster and a little frightening (also in his description). Diminutive helper though he is, somewhere deep inside he still sees himself as a powerful force of nature, wild and untameable.

What's the difference between a Bocan and a Clurichan?
There's not a lot of distinction between them when it comes to temperament; it's more of a national distinction. Bocan (Bochan) are Scottish while Clurichan are Irish. Clurichan is sometimes believed to be a Leprechaun on a drinking spree! I used Bocan in this documentary because they have been mentioned as a kind of fairy that came to the North America with Scottish immigrants. Where I'm from in Nova Scotia (New Scotland) I'm more likely to meet a Bocan than a Clurichan :D

There is a story published in the book The Worlds Best Fairy Tales by the Readers Digest for the Library of Congress. The story is called The Six Swans, it is taken from a place called the Andrew Lang collection and is said to have originated in Germany.

To anyone who got to the time stamp 8:01 at least (cuz I couldn't continue with this video past then) Brownies were NEVER house goblins period. Brownies are one of the most mean, ill tempered of the Fae and should be seen as vicious, they bit, they will swarm if you are alone and they are fast. They can climb, jump, run and disappear faster than you can say "oh shit!" If the rare case finds you in an area with lots of moss, rocks with deep sections below them, old old trees and quite filled with things like pine needles, and little piles of snail shells but no snails just turn and leave the way you came. There is never just one or two, that is all you might have spotted out of the corner of your eye but in truth there are 50 or more. Just get away from that area all together; trust me there are other trails and woods and better memories just not there. Love you beautiful people ❤
I made this and I researched the topic for years before going into production. The screenwriter took some liberties with the Tuatha de Danann narrative and the story with the redcap is pretty much made up (because there were no documented accounts of a redcap encounter) but otherwise it's easy to find citations for everything else, especially the brownie which is so well documented by Scottish folklorists. I don't know where you're getting your information but it's not from documented academic folklore.
