  • Some GMTV presentation with Mr Motivator around an episode of Power Rangers, plus loads of ads and a few promos. We also end on a CITV ident, but I'm afraid there's no more than that. The 1995 copyright at the end is as accurate as I can date this - can anyone spot any clues so we can be a bit more specific? I'm probably missing something. [EDIT: Possibly August or September, I'm told in the comments.]
Look out for the Disney Adventures promo (twice), and one featuring Mariah Carey, plus Pogs getting two whole mentions. Oh, for the days when a Pog-maker was worth selling! I enjoyed the ad for Chupa Chups with its CGI, the Burger King/Lion King tie-in, and that Flix game looks like it could be fun. I have absolutely no recollection of the Chex cereal from Weetabix, though - much less the Frosted Chex and Crunchy Nut Chex varieties.
Many thanks to David for providing this tape.

I never had them but I remember Chex being advertised back in the day with a CGI rabbit. That second ad break just gives me a sense of deja vu as they had quite a few of the same ads, almost played at the same time. :D I recall from when the Power Rangers episode aired that this would have been I'd say roughly around August, but I can't say an exact date sorry. Yeah I'll admit that Ed figure that Burger King gave away then did look cute. :D Yep this just screams 1990's with those Pog's ads. Thanks again for uploading this. :)

Also, the bloke in the lock on advert looks to me, like Tom Clarke-Hill, who also narrates it

This recording is from September 1995 the reason for that is that the CITV ident was launched in September that year.

I suppose it's no surprise to see that GMTV were still heavily leaning on both Mr Motivator and Power Rangers as late as summer 1995. I remember both, but never watched them. I did keep an occasional eye on GMTV in the first few months of the franchise, just out of interest of how it was developing. And I remember the very first sense of any kind of success taking root was when Mr Motivator arrived. The fitness slot originally had some woman in the role. Just a carbon copy of the Lizzie Webb type of thing from TV-am. As I remember it, Mr Motivator covered for a couple of weeks around July 93 whilst the woman was on holiday. But the audience loved him, so he stayed and the woman just vanished. The main GMTV show had only recently been remodelled to clone the old Good Morning Britain, and there was an air of the show starting to turn around the situation after the disastrous launch. When Power Rangers arrived, that was a huge hit for the station. Luckily for them, there were a huge number of episodes produced in a very short timeframe. Close to 150 throughout 1994 and 1995. I'm not sure how many seasons ended up being taken by GMTV, or when they eventually stopped showing them. But it was there long enough to see the company through those financially dark early years, and I'd say that it was quite possibly the saviour of GMTV's existence.

That's a big shout, that - Power Rangers being for GMTV what Roland Rat was for TV-am! You're probably right. They got quite jammy landing that and Mr Motivator - neither was a guaranteed hit at the time, and yet here we are all these years later and they're still household names (sort of), while neither of us can remember the name of the Lizzie Webb clone. So many things could have gone either way for GMTV.

The fall and rise of both TV-am and GMTV have striking parallels, and the key component is that the same man, Greg Dyke, was responsible for both turnarounds. He basically wholesale repeated for GMTV what he'd done for TV-am, even so far as cloning it for the revamp of GMTV's main show. He once said that his tactic for rescuing TV-am was to simply try anything. Keep what works, scrap what doesn't. When a show has sunk to the bottom, the only way is up. Nothing can harm it. Mr Motivator worked, he stayed. Power Rangers was something of a hit out of the blue, at least in the UK. You'd have thought that with the might of Disney part owning GMTV, and having exclusive control over children's output, that the big success in the kids market would have come from a Disney product. But Power Rangers had nothing to do with Disney, at least not at that point. So how it even landed on the station is a peculiarity. I suspect that there was no wisdom of foresight to the success it would become. I reckon they just got it cheap, and it happened to take off big.
