My Mother wrote a letter to John Wayne's fan club for me in that year of 1969 at the age of 9 told him how much I enjoyed his films, but this one True Grit was the best of the best and he sent back a autograph photo of him and one of his horses I will always have fond memories of it and when my parents took me to see this epic western adventure with all its cinematic photography and beautiful landscape. And Rooster Cogburn one eye drinking tough as hell sheriff . Without doubt the Dukes best.
I love this movie. All the actors have led to such an amazing and classic film. John Wayne was the public's actor. There will never be another actor like him!!
Never in an eternity will there ever be another Duke. The only other actor that even compares to THE DUKE is The Stranger (Clint)....I love em both as actors
Simply one of the greatest films ever made. Without doubt the best wetern! The recent re-make is not a patch on this masterpiece. There is only one Roster Cockburn and that is 'The Duke!' Christ I've got to watch it again NOW!
One of my first memories as a child 3 or 4 years old was watching this movie with my dad. With that being said this theme is etched forever in my mind and reminds of my childhood.
In an interview years ago, I remember Mr. Bernstein saying something to the effect of loving to write music for John Wayne's movies as he could just open it up and be big and bold. At 1:07 on the video, I have a picture of me sitting right there against that rock where John Wayne was at Owl Creek Pass with the Cimmarons in the background. In fact, I've been to every filming location in Colorado for this movie.
Just got back from another visit to the True Grit country in Colorado. The Ridgway and Ouray areas are some of the most beautiful locations in the U.S. Didn't try to get to all the filming locations like I've done in the past. Just the town of Ridgway, which was the location for several of the film's locations. Ridgway has really upgraded itself in the last 10 years. Glad I got to see the town when it was still "rustic."
One of the best Western ever made it geve the gteat John Wayne is only Oscar staring the great Glen Campbell the lovely Kim Darby music by the wonderful Elmer bernstein & directed Henry hailthaway who geve us wonderful western Kate elder lovely
Exquisite! Surely on of Bernstein's greatest scores. I love the fact that Wayne and Bernstein.....total social and political opposites.....could work together so amicably.
On this day in 1969 {June 11th} the John Wayne & Glen Campbell movie "True Grit" had its world premier And exactly ten years later on June 11th, 1979 John Wayne passed away at the age of 72 The film garnered two Academy Awards nominations; for Best Actor {which John Wayne won} & for Best Original Song {for the title song, lost to "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head"} Glen Campbell sang the title song; it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart on July 26th & eventually it peaked at #35
If I'm not mistaken, Bernstein studied for a time under Aaron Copland (noted composer of such 'Americana' ballets as "Billy the Kid" and "Appalachian Spring" - for which he purpose sought out the melodic tropes of American folk music) - Bernstein carries on with these musical ideas creates a handful of themes so iconic (this and 'Magnificent Seven') they seem to have ALWAYS existed but yet function as a fulcrum: all Western themes before "7" seem to be yearning to achieve its perfection, all others after to ironize, fight against (aesthetically) or recapture its glory. Check out Bernstein's theme for "The Scalphunters": Dodge City meets the Whiskey A-Go-Go - you'd swear he is being tongue in cheek about his own success as the master of the Western theme!
+Autostade67 Not only did "Bernstein West" study under Copland, but he occasionally wrote homages to Copland into his music. I know of at least two: The scene from To Kill a Mockingbird, in which the kids are at the Radley house, and the sister climbs into a big, old truck or tractor tire, and the long version of Bernstein's National Geographic theme. Nicholas Stix, Uncensored
+Autostade67 One exception: Dimitri Tiomkin's score to Red River (made in 1946, released in 1948) did achieve perfection. Nicholas Stix, Uncensored @NicholasStix
Heck it’s movies like this, and great music that reminds me America can be great again, with being locked down on the left coast this movie, and music keeps me from despair, I listen to the Duke on the “hyphenated American” I realized that we’re just one vote away from loosing our individual Independence, and that’s what some in politics want, God bless America, and all who know that freedom isn’t free.
y por esta pelicula John Wayne fue galardonado muy justamente con el Oscar al mejor actor principal en el papel del malhumorado, solo en apariencia, Ruster Cogburn.
My favorite part starts at 1:24. An interesting and unusual fact.....Glen Campbell was never credited in this movie's credits as the singer of the movie's starting song. Watch the starting credits here: ua-cam.com/video/8qyxA38zsZU/v-deo.html
Nice video until the end. John Wayne was never a great actor. All his movies, John Wayne played John Wayne. He did nothing to earn an oscar for this. However, what really got me was the "Great Patriot" comment. John Wayne never served in WWII, even though he could have. He was a white supremacy, help started the John Birch society, he took part and help Sen. Mccarthy with his witch hunt. While I enjoy most of his movies, I'm not blinded by them as to what John Wayne was like in "real life".
People can say what ever they like, but this is such a great movie.

My friend!!! I love this ❤️❤️ I have rooster tattoed portrait on my hand. He reminds me of my Grampy 😊🤙😎
My favorite line: "By God, she reminds me of me!"
Mine too, it gets me every time, I get all choked up with a huge smile!!
What the creators of the new True Grit fail to understand is that realism is no substitute for idealism and beauty, which was this film.
one of the best western movies ever. the best John wayne movie all times!!!!!!
Mr. Bernstein, you sir are a musical genius, my hat is off to you and your wondrous sounds!
Rooster, I'm shot to pieces.
I'm serving you with a writ wrote for a rat!

That's total bullshit. BOTH claims are bullshit.
ANOTHER GREAT ELMER BERNSTEIN SOUNDTRACK THE MAN WAS PURE GOLD
The remake theme will never, NEVER beat this from the original movie. This is the one I still hum from time to time, etched in my mind
The remake was awesome, but of course, it would never compare to the original. Some films are just made that way. A remake will never be better.
NOBODY and I mean NOBODY captures the magic like THE DUKE
Never seen the remake and never will there's only one True Grit
@@annadempsey7052 you will take that back the moment you watch the original.
@@Willy2000ization 100% Agree with you.
Love this movie and it's beautiful soundtrack, brings back memories of watching it with my dad who I miss so much.
OMG.
You just had to be there. (1968-1969); How could anyone even contemplate re-making this masterpiece?
This was the first western I watched with my dad as a boy.
One of my first memories as a child 3 or 4 years old was watching this movie with my dad. With that being said this theme is etched forever in my mind and reminds of my childhood.
Great movie. Boy have times changed since that movie so sad

"I call that bold talk, for a one eyed fat man!"
FILL YER HAND YOU SONOFABITCH!!!!! :D
I believe this to be the pinnacle in John Wayne's career, beginning at the moment when he spin-clocks that Winchester when he rides up.
Exquisite! Surely on of Bernstein's greatest scores. I love the fact that Wayne and Bernstein.....total social and political opposites.....could work together so amicably.
A truly, truly great western. (UK)
''You get crossways with me and you'll wish you were back at the Alamo with travis'' lol my fav line
Great score of Elmer Bernstein...
Absolutely a great movie and a western classic, one of the best films of the great John Wayne

DER FILMMUSIK MAGIER ELMER BERNSTEIN
As far as I'm concerned Jeff Brides ended his career with this movie.
Not this movie you dumbass...
Revenge is not the right thing to do because she keeps doing that she be harming herself of others around her
I'm not sure what's going on with her but she needs to calm down

I think the remake of this classic was a pure abomination. And I really like Jeff Bridges. What a waste of time; well at least everyone got paid...
