I remember seeing this film in first run release on a sublime Summer afternoon at Grauman's Chinese theater in Hollywood. Even in 1969, as an 18-year old who appreciated the Duke, he seemed out of place in the midst of a revolution in modern films. Still, all of us in the packed theater enjoyed every frame. it was a coming of age summer for me before college and this film is a part of that special time. Great days long gone.
Well written well said I remember seeing this at the Great Lakes Naval Center in N. Chicago. ..my dad was stationed there and I was just 12. One of my first movie theater movies ..up till then most were at the drive-in
I had the pleasure of meeting Glen in my youth. He was a great guy. And an enormous talent. This song will always hold a very special place in my heart. So long, Glen. I will miss you.. :-(
How I LOVE this song... I am a lifelong Glen Campbell fan, have always loved his music,, and what a musician!! I am also a John Wayne fan, watched every movie of the Duke's! Have played this song countless times! Love it & the film♥️
I hear this song and it brings back so many memories and emotions, I feel like I am home with my dad sitting on his lap. Great movie. RIP john Wayne, or "Duke" 😇
Glen Campbell..........what can I say, except I'm soo thankful to have been born in your era, slightly a little before your time, which has allowed me along with millions of others to experience your gift of music to the world, and while I like many,,know that you have reached your twilight years and things are not as clear as they once were, please know that your fans throughout the world will continue to appreciate your love of music for decades to come.As a man I'm not ashamed to say that I loved you,and you will always hold a very special place in the hearts of all those who followed your journey in this life.God Bless you Glen.
Jeffrey E My sentiments exactly, Jeffery, I couldn't have put it better myself. We all love ya, Glen Campbell, seen you on stage three times during your tours "down under" and will never forget those shows, never. Our best wishes to you Mr. Glen Campbell !!!
All those memories of hearing this classic on the radio flood over me. One of my all-time favorites, not just of Glen's, but period! No other version on the planet can even come close. Any project involving Glen, Wayne, and Hal Wallis (of Elvis fame) gotta be awesome! Released on July 12, 1969, reaching # 35 on August 23. R.I.P., Glen.
This is my most memorable movie and song of GLEN'S mainly because i was only 14 almost 15 when it was released.Though a lot of us where into rocknroll GLEN'S voice was the one that kept us listening to Country Music.I must say that to this day i have never got tired of listening to him.R.I.H. GLEN TRAVIS CAMPBELL.(Rest in Heaven)
I'm your age, and love this movie and this song to this day. True Grit, Gentle on My Mind, and Wichita Lineman have been part of my life's soundtrack along with everything else that came with the late '60s and the '70s. RIP to a true cowboy.
In fact, it was not merely Country. As it was the case in those days, there were many Country crossovers into Pop. Much the same as "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love" or "Ruben James" by Kenny Rogers & The First Edition.
One of the best scenes: Robert Duvall tells Rooster, "Pretty big talk for a one-eyed fat man" and John Wayne rotates his head, takes his rifle in one hand and handgun in the other and tells Ned/Duvall, "Fill your hands you son-of-a-bitch!" Saw the movie at a drive-in when it first came out and it's still one of my all time favorites.
Thank you I went with my dad to the drive inn for the first time and saw half of this movie. Fell asleep. I was fortunate to go to a concert with my mom n dad to see Glen Campbell before I lost my dad. Thank you....I cried but I got lost in this as well.
I was 9 when I saw this movie and although I loved this movie, I never knew it had such a beautiful theme song that Glen Campbell sang. I also read that John Wayne asked the director to cast him in this movie even though Glen had never had any acting experience. Good choice.
You should watch the Glen Campbell hour, Carlos, where John Wayne has a guest appearance at the beginning... it is the episode featuring Linda Rondstadt and Neil Diamond, I think --- unfortunately it appears UA-cam has gotten busy with the copyrights since GC's recent death -- I had posted a link but that link is no longer available. You may be able to find it elsewhere on UA-cam. It was just after the movie came out!
A sad and beautiful song about little girls all over the world. John Wayne's best movie. Kim Darby and Glen Campbell were perfectly cast in this masterpiece.
1969 Aug saw this great movie in Boston mass. When I hear this song I tear up. In 1972 on 24 July 1972 my friend Tommy donlon was hit by a car in Waltham mass he died my other friend Mike lived. When this song came out we were going in to 7th grade at Kennedy Jr high School in Waltham ma.when I had this great song I think of him alive. 7th grade home room 101 how well I remember.mr brinklow was our home room teacher.me Tommy Joe dube Mike d Ann Marie Darleen d. Just to name a few. Rip Tommy miss you a lot.14 sept 1957 24 July 1972. He is buried in calavary cemetery in Waltham mass. I use to sing this song in homeroom true grit he use to laugh.
What did you expect? You can't make a better remake when John Wayne played the original! One of the best Western-songs besides High Noon and El Dorado. A fine Glen Campbell as singer as well as actor!!
In 2016, I stood here, where the camera filmed this opening scene. The house and barn are still there (although the roof on the porch has collapsed). The long building, above the barn is mostly fallen down and the building between the barn and the house is gone. Parts of the buckrail fence are on the ground. The last original owner of this property died about 4 years ago. In addition, the background now includes nine more buildings, built over the years. I've been to each filming location in Colorado where this movie was filmed (some parts, like the outlaw's cabin, was filmed in California). God, I miss this part of Colorado, before it turned into a tourist area and a rich person's habitat. No wonder the few westerns filmed these days are mostly filmed in remote areas of Canada.
Sad about Glen Campbell's passing. I has a crush on him since I was a young girl. Always thought he was so handsome. And his songs were beautiful, lyrics, his smooth vocals. Loved his songs, Honey Come Back, Trur Grit, Galvaston, Witchita Lineman. Watching movie Teue Grit now. John Wayne's only Oscar, what a great actor. Kim Darby was so cute in this movie too. Scenery in Colorado True Grit.
One day, little girl, the sadness will leave your face As soon as you've won the fight to get justice done Someday little girl you'll wonder what life's about But other's have known few battles are won alone So, you'll look around to find Someone who's kind, someone who is fearless like you The pain of it will ease a bit When you find a man with true grit One day you will rise and you won't believe your eyes You'll wake up and see A world that is fine and free Though summer seems far away You will find the sun one day
Yes I know....today’s lyrics of songs suck and have no talent and character at all...yesteryear was the true talent and sadly it’s all passing away now...however the music lives on in our hearts!
This is one of the best western themes ever and will be timeless thanks to Glen Campbell's lovely soaring vocals which fit it perfectly. Inspiring and soothing. It is ironic that in real life John Wayne has been quoted that he hated the performances of Campbell and Kim Darby, thought the movie was poor and Richard Burton should have won the Best Actor Oscar instead. He might have had a point about his own performance, but was totally wrong on the others. Thanks for making this video available.
Great movie. John Wayne at his ornery best. With his cat and Chinese roommate. Ha ha. ''Fill your hand, you sunuvabitch.'' Best line ever. And ''He saved my life twice. Once after he was dead.'' Final scene, sweet, then jumping the fence. Awesome.
OMFG, The @#@#$$ Emotion's that rise every time I Hear that Song. Are Hard too exspell even Fifty plus Year's after Seeing that Movie 🍿🍿🍿🍿. I'll always Remember how it was Truely Time where the Academy finally Realized that John Wayne was due the Oscar for Best Male Performer after His portral as "Rooster Cogburn. IN that Great Film. For the Other Actors that Co-Starred in it. They All played Thier Characters too the Tee. So I'm Saying Thank You for Sharing that Wonderful Tune with US Again. May God Bless Them all. AMEN, and May They Now RIP. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🇺🇲🇺🇲🤔🤔 .
beautiful song, always think about these great legends , they will live in our American hearts forever and ever, they wont take the duke and Campbell away from us.
Just don't remember anyone having that kind of quality with that much range. His voice lost some clearness at the end as most peoples do, but in his early years there was nobody better.
Stood on this very spot where this was filmed in 1968 last summer. There are now nine man-made structures (buildings) in the background these days. The original owner of these buildings (who actually lived there at one time) died in 2015.
Music by the legendary Elmer Bernstein. He certainly had a way with westerns. He also scored The Magnificent Seven, Sons of Katie Elder, Big Jake and Wayne's last film The Shootist.
Glen had a few hits with songs from movie soundtracks, "True grit" from "True grit", "Everything A Man Could Ever Need" from "Every which way but loose," and "Any which way you can" from "Any which way you can" being among them.
Job for today, ride out to the north 400 on pine ridge, to check for strays. Now if I take in some of Gods creation on the way, all the better. So long Martha see you tonight for supper.

One of his most beautiful songs. RIP.
One of the most beautiful songs of all time...sung by the master of Country Music.
Ridgeback ...I totally agree.
Rest in Peace Glen. You will forever be remembered as one of the greatest
Willie Nelson once said Glen got in line for talent twice.
@@kennyg63 haha yep I bet he was right

Jeffrey E well said
ng word ca n describe how good that song was
I played it yesterday on a 'juke box,' Stanley.
God bless you Jeffrey
I've always liked how this movie starts with this song... The opening just blooms with music and picture.
".........The pain of it, will ease a bit, when you find a man with true grit". Classic western.
Thanks Glen for all the years of your incredibly talented music. Adios
The world lost out today loosing you.
Best version of this song. Clear vocal, soaring strings. Lovely
The opening bars before the vocals are beautiful.
Original
I adore this movie and this song!! Best western ever!! Best line from the movie - Mattie to Rooster: “You sorry piece of trash!” 😁

I sure would like to go back to those days and NOT marry the wrong woman.

One of my favorite Glen Campbell songs. Rest in Peace Glen!
I agree...you just can't remake True Grit. Jeff Bridges is a fine actor...but there is only one Rooster Cogburn, and that is John Wayne.
And only one Glen.
One of the best scenes: Robert Duvall tells Rooster, "Pretty big talk for a one-eyed fat man" and John Wayne rotates his head, takes his rifle in one hand and handgun in the other and tells Ned/Duvall, "Fill your hands you son-of-a-bitch!" John Wayne was a real man. Jeff Bridges is a loony lefty. He can't hold a candle to the Duke
I love both the original and remake.
This movie and the 2010 are based in a book so it was not a remake.
Such a wonderful movie. Great cast, cinematography, music, score and acting.
Remember seeing this as a kid in the big theatre .. It was magnificent on a big screen
one of John Wayne best films with The Cowboys Searchers And Shootist
Paul Kryder opinions vary
McClintock and big Jake are right at the top also.
I also happen to like Chisum quite much.
Thank you I went with my dad to the drive inn for the first time and saw half of this movie. Fell asleep. I was fortunate to go to a concert with my mom n dad to see Glen Campbell before I lost my dad. Thank you....I cried but I got lost in this as well.

Thank you so much for the info you gave. I never knew any of it Betty and I'm glad I do now. London. UK.
I can’t get enough of this song and this intro video. It takes to that time. I’ve been watching this for 6 years now

Am I correct in thinking that while John Wayne got an Oscar for True Grit,Glen Campbell didn't even though this title music is absolutely superb.

Sleuth Girl .
Sleuth Girl brilliant film
Both r great movies one of the only remakes i like
REMAKE IS HORRIBLE...A BAD CARICATURE OF THE ORIGINAL.
The backing singers are excellent, all live as well
Wow it still hits the spot,
Glenn Campbell is superb
Rip Glen

R.I.P. Glen Campbell.😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Memories of a great movie. 👍
One of his best!
So long, Glen Campbell.
Love glen Campbell's singing.

Agreed although you knew it was him. What a voice.
At that time, it was assumed everyone would know that Glen Campbell sang the title song...no credit was necessary
abyios, I think at the time that was true - his voice had gone into all the world, so to speak! :)
Go figure! But there was not a person in 1969 who had never heard of Glen.
I agree no one like John Wayne or the awesome Glen Campbell he was one of a kind ❤️
One of the all time best...
Rest In Peace. 😞😞😞
Probably my favourite Glen Campbell song!
He only had one movie hit. But that’s enough, in movie history!
