Chasm: The Rift (also known as Chasm: The Shadow Zone) is a first-person shooter computer game developed by Action Forms and published in 1997 by GT Interactive Software, WizardWorks, and Megamedia Corp. Action Forms would later develop the Carnivores series. The game was meant to compete with Quake a year earlier, since GT Interactive lost publishing rights to Activision when id Software signed with the latter. - Ігри
Fun fact, while the enemies are in 3d, the engine itself is actually a 2.5d Doom-like ray casting engine. If I recall, it's actually more limited than Doom in terms of the geometry it can produce. The game was touted as Quake for 486 owners as I believe the system requirements were 486/66 Mhz.
i take off my hat because of you knowledge gentlemen
Huh. I knew something seemed a little off about the game. Despite the really detailed models and textures the level geometry seemed very flat.
Yes, Chasm appears to be the final of the evolution of Wolf3D clones. It has ceilings and floors at the same height and straight corridors of the same (minimal) width. But it still looks nice anyway :)
Quake ran on 486 dx4 100 8 mb RAM, but Chasm had around 300-400 polygons per model compairing to Quakes 200-250 and better visual effects.
Perfect 90 degree angled walls? Have you even played the game? The walls can be at any angle, but the floor textures can only be changed at tile boundaries.
Man this is pure nostalgia...a game literally no one in my life I talked to knew about...here it has got 100k+ views..
As a kid my dad at one time obtained a boxed copy but never opened or played it. It sat under the stairs in our basement for years until eventually I think my mom tossed it. I always wanted to play it and now that it is on gog remastered such a perfect time to play it without the headaches of running an old game on a modern pc.
I'm quite surprised for such a well known game, there's no heavily patched version on GOG or Steam :S
Well, the problem is that Action Forms is dead since Cryostasis release (even though some remnants of it tried to continue Carnivores series - store.steampowered.com/app/293520/Carnivores_Dinosaur_Hunter_Reborn/ - with mixed results, including iOS ports).
The other problem is ownership dispute between the developer and 1C, the largest russian publisher (that's why Cryostasis has been removed from Steam/GOG for almost 3 years from now, exact situation with Vivisector, but it was distributed through local download sites).
As I remember correctly, Action Forms DID got the rights to their game but... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And finally Chasm. It's hard to run this bastard due to software-rendering nature of the engine. Using DOSBox actually makes matters worse in comparison to actual hardware, the game in maximum resolution of 640*480 struggles even on i7. DOSBox SVN Daum builds won't help because, as I said, the engine doesn't have 3d graphics processors support. At all.
Some crazy folk from old-games.ru successfully uncaped resolution in menu but ine the 800*600 results are... :D
Well-known? I've played thousands of FPS going back to the late 80s and I've never heard of this.
Good news, it’s coming to Steam this October!
@@Morningstar91939 But when on GOG?
@@Morningstar91939 Thanks for this. It wouldn't have occurred to me to check!
The artstyle was so on point that it took me half the review to realize that this wasn't a modern game trying to look old. The graphics look great.
Brandon Keller
It's more primitive than Doom in terms of the engine, not graphics.
The graphics overall are better than DooM, even if the geometry is flat.
Looks WAAAAY better than Doom
When you see Doom - it looks ancient. When you see any Quake - it looks ancient. When you see Chasm - it looks like modern indie FPS that tries really hard to emulate the retro look, but you still think it's modern. That always bothered me about Chasm, it looks faux-retro, meta-nostalgic for some reason. And the more years go, the more stylish it seems.
Cool man glad you like it
This is one of my favourite games of all time and one of my biggest inspirations as a painter. Thanks for objective review.
where can i check out your art ?? sounds interesting and im an artist too and im always interested in the endeavours of other artist, have a nice weekend and stay safe!!!!
@@nickmaatjes5611 Hey. If you want to see some of my works, talk to me on priv.
"imagine being 12 and seeing this dismemberment from Chasm: the rift for the first time"
i don't have to imagine i remember it :D. i was 12 when i played it in 1997
That’s me with doom 2016
Same, man!
I was 8 when I played Blood, I think it was much more bloody :D
i was 12-13 when I played Blood, o the joy
Lol and i was thinking " Wow they have done a great job to get the retro vibe" and then mentioned it was released in 1997. And it looks a lot better then many of the more "modern" retro style shooters
Eastyy But it was, IIRC, originally a pet project of a few poor Ukrainian students.
There is actually a reverse-engineered port of Chasm called PanzerChasm, it's still a work in progress but it looks very promising.
Also, great review as always.
Put the CSM.bin file from the game on the same folder as PanzerChasm and it should work fine.
works well so far, only up to v0.3 but its running nicely just make sure to select opengl
@@RCD4444is the remaster good?
Remember back in 96 I got early demo of 'Chasm'. It was set in maze like space ship/base. There were only 3 types of enemies: scorpions, clowns, and as a boss it was that big axeman. But what was amazing in that build you were able to shoot of limbs. And for 96 it was quite unique.
Shit this game was made in '97? It looks really good considering its age.
The Cheshire Cat Yeah, the art is very clean and the animations are detailed. Too bad, Wolf3D-style maps made it quite repetitive, versus “true 3D” games like Quake. But it ran much better on the same hardware. And it had deathmatch mode!
Someone should show this game to Nightdive;
They love remasterin' 90s stuff and do a Good job at it.
Get them to also remaster Assault Suit Valkan & Metal Warriors. I need my 2d Gundam knock off fix. The pixel art for those two are great.
I have talked to Stephen about it, he said he has been trying to acquire the rights for many years now.
I played the hell out of Chasm in 1997, it was my favorite game for a while... until Half-Life came out in 1998 and I forgot about Chasm, until today! Chasm really is a great game, and it was way ahead of its time in many ways. I thought the graphics were mind-blowing in '97. Thanks for this nostalgic video! :)
FINALLY! I’ve been waiting like forever for you to do a review on this
Just finished it up a week ago, again, after more than 20 years! Love that game and perfect timing for a review!
Thanks for the video, dad
You're welcome, son.
tired loser dood u nazi?
@@Gggmanlives
My lord, but can it be raytraced?
I always have a nice warm Gggmanlives video before bed.
Awesome review. i still have the box and cd for this. i loved this game. Ran fine on dos based windows
You're right. The first time I played a game with dismemberment this good, it was years later in Soldier of Fortune. It seemed so insanely modern, like this was the future of gaming from now on. And to think this game is way older, especially considering a year back then was far more significant in technological progression compared to now.
When I played that in my childhood, that engine was so magic to me!
Hey dude, I know this is a old video, but I’ve only found your channel recently, and I freaking luv it
oh wow cool, thanks for puttin this one up, i was requestin you do this quite a bit a while back :D
Gggmanlives, your idioms are amazing.
I have been hoping you'd get to review this! Sweeeet!
I found this game for $5 at a computer show back in 1998 and loved it. I found not a whole lot of people knew about it. It's a flawed, but underrated gem
Holy crap. I completely forgot about this game. I loved it when I first played it. Thank you for the nostalgia trip
I remember this Game.
I was playing a Demo Version of it in 1997/1998 on my 133 MHz Pentium PC.
It was amazing. :-)
OMG NO WAY! You did it! Hahah much love
Chasm is a personal favorite of mine.
I love everything Action Forms did actually. Especially Chasm and Cryostasis.
Will we see a little bit of a homage in Dusk?
Gggmanlives Hopefully. I mean when you did the review of Dusk I was waiting for a chance to play it. However I will await here and see if Dusk is as good as it claims it will be.
Early on there were a lot of overt influences (there used to be a buzzsaw weapon), but as Dusk has become more its own thing I think most of them have been downplayed or redone. Probably some unconcious stuff since Chasm was such a big part of my early teens.
Nice video as usual Gman
Crysis. meet your performance match.
Hawk Hopper this comment should be top rated
There are worse. Like Dust for DOS, even i7 had problem with it...
You're talking about emulator performance vs. actual hardware, it's not the same thing at all.
SpecShadow There were Core i7's in the DOS era? Wut?
Kristoffer Johnsen He says emulators are struggling with this game in hi-res even on modern i7. It ran much better than Quake 1 originally, which is not a surprise considering its Wolf3D-style maps.
Forgot all about this game, thanks Gggman.
Another great review from Triple G
>availble in 360p
holy shit it feels like 2004 again haha
in all seriousness, great vid man
Keep these brutally honest reviews coming
Oh my gawd thaank you ive been waiting for you to review this gem ! :D
Holy heck thank you thank you ! great job by the way ! :D
Such a dope looking game. I still play Quake2 in my sleep.
AUTOMAKHAN Yet even Doom had much more complex and fun levels than this game due to engine limitations.
@@noop9k I played back in '00 liked it a lot more than Doom. Still find it more fun
Ema Heiwa I liked many parts of Chasm, but the level design was never among them. More flat than the original Doom and of course no comparison to Quake. There’s no verticality at all and way too many “enemies appear from behind” traps.
It tries to look better than Quake (and often succeeds), but the level layouts are almost like Wolf3D or Blake Stone.
Oh man, this is great. So many memories!
It's awesome to see some coverage of this game. I don't think too many people know about it. I did play this one a good bit back in 2001 or so. I remember enjoying it but if I recall correctly, some of the later portions of the game were a major bitch to get through thanks to poor enemy spawn points.
Gameplay and Talk cool ur here
you should try reviewing vivisector beast within a game where you go around killing furries
Second that, good game
Is there no fps game out there where you play as a furry killing aliens?
I swear, based on the print ads from 1997 I to this day believed this game to be a tournament fighter.
Thanks for this video dude...I've been struggling trying to remember the name of this game for the longest time. It was one of my favorite games from the 486 days cause it was one of the few I could get to run decently on my old system.
Glad you enjoyed this game! Iike you i've been trying to get this running decently for ages, so i can do a let's play of it. So thanks for the link, i'll definitely try that out later this week.
I can confirm that this version of chasm works as advertised! Thank you very very very much!!!
I still own the physical release of this. Have the CD and manual. Was an old favorite of mine. Used to run it in DOSbox around 2003-ish
I remember reading the review for this in PCGamer mag back in the day!
OI, SONNY JIM.
fucken love your work
lol, love the username. You should collaborate with BasementChampion1993
@@yellowblanka6058 Guess again, fuckstick.
I had so much fun playing this game back in the day. I don´t even remerber how old i was. 12 maybe. It was really wow at that time
Who’s here after Chasm popped up on Steam?
Never actually heard of this game! back in the day i'd be playing Doom, Quake, Hexen, Heretic, Unreal... etc... So uh, this game was the first to use that blade gun? looks like Unreal and Unreal Tournament 'borrowed' that idea with the Razorjack and Ripper gun ;D
KoRnFoReVeR23 It was made in Ukraine, so..
It's interesting when we get to know some interesting game that we completely missed back in the day. As I always thought, 90s is one of the decade of gaming that have many hidden gem
AA/AD J Check Madspace also. And ZAR
I'm the same as you. Some people in the comments are saying they are surprised that for a well-known game it's not available. What?
Total agree. Specially about the dismemberment thing. I think i did only one play-through though. Still, a very memorable game! Nice vid!
Funny how i could see this video and then at 1:30 when the joker things came up, i was flushed with nostalgia, i remember this from some demo disc i Got way back when it released, thanks dude. Btw im 29 , did you back then Think about all the stuff you talk about now ? Like who made it, storyline, sense etc etc
For those interested in this game, as of now, there is a Steam page rumoring a remaster allowing for up to 4K resolution. Its release date is in October of 2022.
And it's also coming on GOG. But it's TBA when.
It's already there but the game rarely goes on sale.@@pessie83
The thumbnail looks like a bunch of darker ThunderCats characters and I love it
love the new channel pic
Thanks!
Coming back to this, I hope Nightdive can remaster it and Cryostasis
ahh the memories. I got this bad boy on a demo disc
Finally! I requested this one a while back. I really liked this back in the day. I was so thirsty for FPS's that I would've played anything that involved shooting from a first-person perspective. Check out Eradicator sometime. Another lesser-known FPS (thought it can be played in third-person as well).
OMG! I remember being in the beta for this!!!!
Great review, I really enjoyed it too
"Court Gestures" 🤭. I mean am commenting 4 years later so yeah.. 😂. Love it always Gman! Also they just re-released this on Steam.
Now review Vivisector, that game sure is a bag of fun and craziness...
loved vivisector and cryostasis. vivisector is often misunderstood though
I loved this game on my first pc.
Been trying to remember this game AND timesplitters lately! It was killing me trying to recall the names
we've got remaster - now we're waiting for a revisit)
Hillarious that you had the same issues with Chasm the Rift as i did.
It also took me 1-2 years of on & off research to get it to run with music, in the 640x480 resolution and i gotta admit i enjoyed it while it lasted (even though the mid section levels were downright terrible)
More 90's shooters? how about Eradicator? or the Marathon Trilogy? or the somewhat meh but extremly feature rich CyberMage Darklight Awakening? not to mention both Delta Force & Rainbow Six
Keep on trucking dude, your a straight up legend for doing this.
I just love Unreal / Quake era games. How have I never heard of this
I remember playing the demo over and over again, really wanting this game for ages...I still haven't even touched the real thing.
I remember playing the demo of this back in the day, and thought it was rather good. But never played the full version until 2005 or so. And it's indeed good as far as I remember. Still have the original jewel disk case I found 12 years ago. Only played a full run of it once. I suspect it's time again. As I still have my old 166 MMX with Win 95.... Now I want to play it again after seeing this.
Finally! Thanks Garreth, only had to ask like 20 times :-)
Oh! Should also mention that there's a reverse engineered source port allowing the game to be run at modern resolutions with a good framerate called PanzerChasm. The game can also be easily obtained from myabandonware, if you're into that sort of thing
Wish this was on Steam.
I'm really digging that Mr. Plinkett reference.
i loved it....i am suprised how nice it looks today too(graphic)
I really hope this will come to GOG or Steam someday in future... It was nice game back in the 90's and I really enjoyed it...
There's a new remaster that dropped a couple weeks ago
"Action Forms", we miss You!
gggman, you should do MDK
I Wishlisted it on steam cause it's coming ! ^^
Played before back in the nineties on my P100 :)
Damn, those human character models giving you dialog look _really_ good, and their eyes are bordering on the uncanny valley.
I loved this game as a kid.
Huzzah! The game is now on both Steam and GoG!
Consider doing a review for their other game:
Vivisector: Beast Within. Thanks!
Oh my god, talk about a childhood throwback here. My parents got me this game for my 12th birthday because they couldn't afford Quake (this was a 20 dollar budget game) and I was obsessed with it. Also glad you gave it a positive review here, a lot of others have said this games garbage.
There is a sourceport already called Panzerchasm, it allows higer screen resolutions, opengl graphics, you can change the FOV and theres a lot of neat cosmetic upgrades, the sourceport is still on development stage but its fully functional and pretty stable already...
For annyone checking this video out Post 2020, this game is now avalible on Switch, It's actually a pretty Good Port, it's allso for sale on GOG and Steam however I've not tried either
aaaaand subbed
Thanks!
Oh ssshhheeeeiiitttt sonny Jim
Probably the only example of a 2.5D sector based engine with moderate polygonal object use I've ever come across IE. faster corridor rendering. I guess it kind of payed off since the 3D meshes were pretty detailed and well animated for the time.
Never heard of this, looks good.
As some guys here already mentioned - you should try Vivisector - Beast Within from the same developers. It's 2005 FPS inspired by Serious Sam and it has a nice dismembering too.
yo gg! if you see this you should review Tower of Guns or Megaman 8 Bit Deathmatch (Doom Mod). Keep up the good work
About the undead Zombies\Mummies - you can also decapitate them with a lucky shot from any other weapon if you ran out of ammo for the explosive weapon(s), or don't have any at your disposal yet.
The animation looks a lot smoother, Quake used vertex based animation which is a lot more noticeable now than back in the day.
Man I gotta play this game we need a re-release been on my list of games to play for years now :(
Oh Devolver! We have a fresh IP in dire need of a remake!
I'm surprised and happy to see you recommending this game, ggg. I think it's fairly underrated. It's sort of a shameless Quake clone, but it does the shooting so well you kind of forgive it for it.
wow! never played it and it looks reaaally good!!!
I want to admit, I never thought I would see you review this game.
I bought this game when it first came out because I couldn't afford Quake. It was 19.99. I remember having a Compaq PC with no video card and it ran great. I wish I had never gotten rid of the CD. Great review, but I never had a problem with the game.
Thanks for reviewing this game, it was published by one of the my recent favorite publishers of the 90s WizardWorks , another one was MAcSoft . They published games i was too young and too broke to play lol check out their published games list
Hopefully this will come to GOG!
The fact that most of the enemies seem to be variations of the same monsters wearing different costumes suited to the level, it kinda reminds me of the Gnorcs and Rhynocs from Spyro, or the Lab Assistants from Crash Bandicoot.
How about reviewing "Crimson Metal"? It claims to be old school, hardcore, dynamic, brutal, challenging and atmospheric FPS, but I'm not sure If I should waste my lunch money on that.
