Nice to see a proper review of this game for once, so many people think this is a terrible game because of Spoony's video. But you must do Alien Resurrection on the PS1 sometime G.
Larry Bundy Jr he was absolutely right though. I have played this game and I think it's worse than even what Spoony said. Especially on a console since the PC has a few other perks.
I don't think the game is bad, but it seems to have aged somewhat. Personally, if I was going to make an interactive adaptation of a horror story based in paranoia, I wouldn't have made it a shooter; I'd have probably gone for something along the lines of a point-&-click puzzle/mystery/visual novel, taking into account how important the player character's interactions with the other characters would be to getting past obstacles while also being mindful of who you find yourself siding with, lest you find yourself cornered by the Thing. If I couldn't incorporate a random infection element into the game I'd probably give it a branching story, so the characters you find yourself siding with or suspecting will determine who gets infected & who makes it to end. But shooting the Thing works too.
Larry Bundy Jr I loved this game. The ammo was abundant, yet there was tension, which is pretty hard to pull off. The controls are meant to be clunky, as it's a horror game.
@@agbrenv I think it's a reference to a tweet Rotten Tomatoes put out saying something like "John Carpenter would be 70 today, here are some of the films he would have enjoyed" for John Carpenter himself to respond saying that he's still alive.
I really like The Thing game but the one aspect that always bugged me was the nature of the The Thing. In the game, it's played like a zombie virus, something you can be infected with and not know it. But in the movie, it's not like that. The Thing kills the original person and takes their form. It's a disguise. The alien knows it's an alien, it's just pretending to blend in.
Yes I also didn’t like that about the game. It was ok as a shooter but I don’t think the developers really understood what the Thing was. The Thing would assimilate you so it could assume your identity and work in secret. It would only burst out if it had been discovered, but in the game it was more like something that would gestate inside you and burst out once it had finished growing (like the chestburster in Alien)
Jason Orriss Well, I even finished this game so yes, it is not THAT bad. Yet I was very angry about the fact that it took great source material, did a few things right, but they did not even understand the main subject of the game, completely wasting the potential. Was it so hard to read a short story? Yes, they added the blood tests, but you almost immediately understand they are fake. Also, as a shooter it was often boring, repetitive, frustrating. They were given top quality ingredients yet produced a barely playable shallow medocrity. Imagine if they really had werewolf-like politics going on in your team, with some members attempting to secretely murder other while you are not looking. Imagine blood tests having a chance to immediately cause a mini-boss fight. Imagine discovering sci-fi weapons and gadgets crafted by some of the things, etc etc.
noop9k That would have been amazing. I think the game should have been set in one location (like the early Resident Evil games) and had a central cast of characters (about 10-12 of them). You could then grow attached to the characters, and start to question their actions if they started to behave oddly. You could have some characters initiating a mutiny, while other characters could sabotage your efforts by leading you down dead ends, then you would actually have to question whether you could trust those characters and if you want them on your side. So many opportunities squandered in favour of a simple run and gun game.

i feel like being able to be attacked by the monsters goes against what made the thing terrifying (for me at least). the fact that it was pretty much instant take-over on contact
Omg, I had completely forgotten about this game! YOU might not say it's a forgotten masterpiece, but *I* will! That game was fun, and it was pretty god damned scary! The camera angles, the score, the blizzard, & the creatures did some absolutely exceptional work. I recall playing the game on my Xbox with friends when I was in the 6th or 7th grade, and we would cut the lights, get some buttery popcorn, and take turns playing that game, experiencing it together like an interactive horror film; fond memories of a truly terrifying & badass game. Loads of fun to be had with that one! Thanks for reminding me about it! Im subscribing to your channel now.😁
This game is one of my favorites of all time. Interesting ideas and I love how it fits into the narrative of the movie. On a recent playthrough of it I found it to be a lot harder than I remember, especially the sections dealing with descending into and ascending out of the weapons lab toward the end of the game.
My friends and I played through this several times over the course of a few weeks when it first came out. Lots of sleepovers staying up late playing this, scared out of our whits, while munching Hostess powdered donuts and guzzling Mountain Dew. The early 2000's were great.
One thing i never understood is why were there so many dead bodies, in each level? What was the point? Was it whitleys employees? I always tought, that it had nothing to do with the movie, but realised that Whitney released the thing virus at the camps.
After extensive blood testing and monitoring of squad mates through multiple playthroughs... 90% of infection is not scripted... all your team can get infected and it happens after they are hurt by a thing (% chance)... however being hit does not guaranty infection. A infection can actually prevent progress if you need a certain speciality in your squad mates, however the devs always made sure there are multiple of that class in the level or the squads mates needed don't get into contact with a thing until not needed. I would happily take a remake or new The Thing game.
I LOVE this game. One of my favorites. I've beaten it so many times. Really happy to see people notice this little gem again. Imagine if they made an updated version with the features they planned to include?
@@bartercardinal Indeed i did! Wow this is an old comment haha. Yeah the remaster is looking quite sharp, and it does appear they may be ironing out some of the games rougher aspects (trailer showing the first boss, with a squad going in instead of just you solo, so perhaps full mechanic changes to that). Hopefully some updates or a mode that adds more randomness to the infection mechanic, but will have to wait till its out.
Great review, I love how you segued into talking about how great the film is. I just love the film so damned much I cant help but gush about it too whenever something related comes up in conversation about it too.
In case you're not aware, there's a mod out there that makes the infection completely random and only spread on contact with infected individuals. It can fuck up missions that require engineers or other certain people, but it's pretty good.
By far my favorite reviewer. Your channel is up there with Gameranx and Downward thrust in terms of bringing excellent video game criticism and journalistic reviews to youtube. Definitely throwing you some money on patreon.
Great review, but you forgot to mention how you can create walls of fire by using your flamethrower on the ground. This keeps enemies from crossing it and getting to you.
Mate! You just made a subscriber for life. I never thought in a million years you'd do this review. But here we are. Good vid bro, keep it up. Quality. Boom, Mans hot.
One of those underrated gems that went unnoticed and you buy out of curiosity. A pleasant surprise, bought it when it came out and it was awesome. Great atmosphere, attention to details, gameplay and has plenty of those "things" that made the movie the masterpiece that it is. I think Carpenter also endorsed it, not saying it's canon but a plausible sequel.
John Carpenter R.I.P. ? he is still very, very much alive lol 😆 Can I just say though, I really enjoy your vids, and it did bring a smile to my face lol.
I always have to watch your videos with subtitles and I don't get all the jokes but I really like your videos and the kind of games you're reviewing. And The Thing is a great film, that's true. Thanks and greets from germany.
I knew nothing about the basic plot going into the game back in 2002. Loved the game. Then, 10 years later, I finally got around to seeing the movie. The opening scene with the dog running through the snow already started to creep me the fuck out, because I knew why they're chasing it. It was so goddamn scary, knowing more or less where it's going to lead. Well, the movie was even worse than I imagined it might be. I have a poster of it. Felt like it made sense to hang it above my retro PC, fitting with that chess scene.
Remembering the time I played this game, I can actually feel the anguish I was experiencing at the time. The immersion this game managed to achieve is hardly rivaled, especially when you consider it's basically ancient right now. This and Blade of Darkness really are 2 forgotten (if not all too popular to begin with) masterpieces.
One of my favorite games. There is a open container outside of the lookout tower you can put most of your companions in so they wont freeze or despawn and they also wont change into the monsters. Great way to stockpile your medics and engineers
My dad rented this from blockbuster at one point, but I had no idea what it was. I watched him play it and I remember the graphics looking really good in that weird way that nostslgia tends to smooth over rough edges.
The Thing is 1 of those amazing old movies that do more than just hold up imo. I think they're literally better in terms of atmosphere, cinematography and even visual effects than most the new shit that comes out now. A couple of my favorites are Terminator 2, Alien and Aliens, OG Mad Max, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, TGTBATU, that Pam Grier movie where she killed hella dudes in the cabin and... Toxic Avenger lol. Also maybe this is a personal thing but I think since beginning the use of *heavy* cgi in films that they've severly diminished in quality. Especially horror/scifi movies. Like I said tho that's my own biased opinion as I hate cgi with a fucking passion
Such an unknown, underrated and fun game. This scratched that Dead Space itch before you even knew you had a Dead Space itch. Cold Fear also did it for me.
Damn, Larry Bundy Jr AND Mangalore gaming commenting in a GGGmanlives video? All 3 of the pillars of old games and trivia all in one place... kinda makes me happy that all the gaming channels I still watch and love all seem to enjoy eachothers content, that's cool
This is arguably the greatest horror game ever released on the PS2 (Manhunt is second best) and just like the Carpenter film is a masterpiece. This is also my favourite game. BTW Carpenter is also IN THE GAME HIMSELF (for those who don't remember) - he's badass with a shotgun and a great medic. Also notable is that the game takes place six months after the film. Oh and I actually liked the 2011 prequel - it's best appreciated when watched along with the original in one hit. Personally I completed my third run-through of this game (& taped the footage on DVD) on my 36th Birthday this year (2021). Awesome game.
The Thing by John Carpenter really is a horror masterpiece and is probably up there as my favourite film ever made. The themes of paranoia and distrust towards others who are possible monsters wearing human faces and the idea of said monsters probably not even knowing what they are until its too late really elevated the monsters to all new levels that no horror film has achieved before to my knowledge and the designs are wonderfully grotesque and fucked up which is always great imo. I like the game a lot but I've never finished it, I remember the first boss being a total arsehole and the enemies being incredibly tough even when on fire but I do want to give it another bash at some point down the line. Makes me wish they made another game with the idea of multiplayer and having people infect other players through subtle contact like the film did in mind, there's a ton they can do with the ideas of the film but it'll probably remain as make believe.
Although I haven't seen The Thing yet, a movie called Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) comes to mind as a movie with a somewhat similar element of paranoia and familiar faces turning into foes/an unknown entity. It's a black and white movie, but I still think it's very much worth it to watch! Might have even been an inspiration to Carpenter, who knows :P
The Thing from 1982 is the greatest sci-fi horror movie ever made, no doubt in my mind, and in my personal top 10 or 5 of overall films. With today's capabilities of consoles and PCs they can make an incredible game on it, building on this underrated gem from 2002. Maybe from an indie company, since these days the so called big names are putting out a lot of garbage and overpriced messy games.
Def one of my favorite if not favorite horror film ever made even to this day. It still scares me, especially the part where they actually see the first guy get infected as he runs out in the snow and falls to his knees looking at them with black eyes, elongated fingers, and sharp teeth as he let's out a chilling scream and they burn him. Gives me the chills that scene, and that's still right near the beginning. At that point you know the movie is going to be scary af.
@@billysutherland5890 wrong, we called those GAMES. The other stuff makes it a casino or milking machine, not a game. EA hasn't made a game in five years.
And they were playing a sequel which looked really good, but it was canned halfway through development, there was a little mini documentary I remember watching it was a few years ago but it was pretty informative
One of the best games I ever played, i remember the hype surrounding it when the trailer was revealed in 2002, I remember being so happy when I brought the PC game, it was so faithful to the film and very creepy rather than horrifying, it was all about suspence, the use of paranoia and fear was expertly incorporated. From start to finish, the mystery of the thing and who was the thing remained. Often times, your team would suspect you and each other or simply crack up. Fabulous
I've been watching a couple of your videos and this was the ultimate test. I loved this game and all the details they had. So I agreed with this review 100% well done!
I just finished the movies both original and the later prequel and went online to see if they made a game, sure enough they did, want sure if it's any good as I look at a few mainstream critics I get the notification for this video. What are the chances!
Actually Carpenter's movie is considered a remake of a previous movie, though Carpenter is far closer to the original novella "Who Goes There" by Campbell I think, might be wrong on the author. For the record enjoyed the prequel as well.
@@italianfoodname534 technically he's kinda right cause people fucking HATED it when it came out. Although now it's considered a staple in the horror genre
Saw the movie on old school late night SciFi Channel as a teenager. Somehow got my hands on a copy of the game? Played it on my grandpa's laptop over the course of a few months but I have a vivid memory of playing it from start to finish during Xmas vacation in a rented cabin at Lake Arrowhead, CA. The remastered game just came out and I'm anxious to play it for the nostalgia berries.
Does anyone know where you can get this game for pc? I never finished it on the original xbox and I´ve always wanted to pick it up again and finish the fight
There is a copy up on TheIsoZone, if you cannot find a copy to buy. Link: www.theisozone.com/downloads/pc/windows-games/the-thing-usa-3/ Hope this helps, somewhat.
I watched The Thing after seeing one of the practical effects they used. How on earth could they say it was bad it was the most realistic effects I've seen yet.
Damn this game was underrated. I remember the first time one of my team transformed. I was freaking terrified and ended up killing myself by spraying my flame thrower, running around and screaming. Great game.
With Night Dive working on the remaster, hopefully they can include a crosshair that changes color when you damage enemies if you choose free targeting, take squad mates with you for boss fights, have your squad mates turn into the Thing at random like the original developers intended, and get Kurt Russell back to voice R.J. MacCready.
The Thing is my favorite horror movie of all time, with Black Christmas as a very close second. I have fond memories of the game, I got it when it came out back in 2002, and it took me a few years to beat it, because I split the gameplay between two ps2s. It was a good game for its time. Looking back my only criticism was regarding whose infected and who isn't. Each and every person that is infected has a pointed in the game where they go from being human to infected. If they make another game, I think who and who isn't infected should depend solely on your choices. Once you got the hang of the sequence, you basically knew who to take out before you walked in the next room. It roomed a good portion of the suspense that the game had me feeling. And the final boss, was ridiculously easy to beat. In contrast the other bosses were much harder to kill on the first play through. Other than that, it was a good game. Definitely underrated.
Dude I remember staying over my mates house playing this all night and shitting myself in fear. the dated graphics are hilarious to look at but this is an amazing game at the time and I bet I'll still get some good thrills playing it today.
I remember Spoony shitting all over this game and watched that review countless times. He sucks now but I do hear mixed things about this game as a whole. I hope the Ps2 version of this game is good.

Great review, I love how you segued into talking about how great the film is. I just love the film so damned much I cant help but gush about it too whenever something related comes up in conversation about it too.
You scared the hell out of me with that “Rest In Peace” after you said John Carpenter.
Mortismal is good too
Great review, but you forgot to mention how you can create walls of fire by using your flamethrower on the ground. This keeps enemies from crossing it and getting to you.
Need to get around to playing this. Thanks for the insight as always!
It sold 1 million units
Just rewatched the movie, still holds up
John Carpenter R.I.P. ? he is still very, very much alive lol 😆 Can I just say though, I really enjoy your vids, and it did bring a smile to my face lol.
I always have to watch your videos with subtitles and I don't get all the jokes but I really like your videos and the kind of games you're reviewing. And The Thing is a great film, that's true. Thanks and greets from germany.
Who’s here because of a remaster in the making?
👊
You serious?!?
Wow i never knew
that's no dog..
Best creature ever.
Top 3 alien creature designs (no particular order):
Alien
The Thing
Attack the Block
I think I asked you to review this last year, that and the Scarface game. This is a really underrated game, glad to see you do a review on it.
there is game called Cold Fear whic is heavily inspired by The Thing but instead of antactica your stuck on ocean liner, check it out its pretty good
Cold Fear only had one flaw: The camera. I ended up constantly moving around in Aim view
Such an unknown, underrated and fun game. This scratched that Dead Space itch before you even knew you had a Dead Space itch. Cold Fear also did it for me.
"...John Carpenter's 1982 horror film masterpiece..." and with that, subscribed! Great review. Loving the videos.
I know it is always so much fun to rewatch over and over again I love it best horror movie ever
Its Remastered now!
WTF... no dlc, no season pass, no micro transactions, no lootboxes.... just a finished complete game to play? 🤔
We call those kind of games GOOD GAMES
@@billysutherland5890 wrong, we called those GAMES. The other stuff makes it a casino or milking machine, not a game. EA hasn't made a game in five years.
Play a good game lol
And they were playing a sequel which looked really good, but it was canned halfway through development, there was a little mini documentary I remember watching it was a few years ago but it was pretty informative
@@Casanuda EA doesnt make games they are publishers
Legit one of my favorite review channels.
"John Carpenter RIP"... wait what?
I can’t wait for the remaster of this game. It was a favorite of mine in the PS2 era
I remember buying this for the ps2 expecting something like Halo CE, I slept with the lights on for weeks
Fabulous
Is this the game that made George Brossaurd want to include snow levels in DNF?
Yes.
I loved this game. The sound of walking in the snow was mesmerizing
Mac wants the flamethrower.
He wants the WHAT???
I've been watching a couple of your videos and this was the ultimate test. I loved this game and all the details they had. So I agreed with this review 100% well done!
*Insert Sonny Jims related comment here"
I still remember i was pleasantly suprised i could covertly run this game smoothly on my parent's pentium 2 pc back in the day. Fun times.
John Carpenter is still alive.
I can't believe, this is the game that I was searching for the past 10 years.
Also John Carpenter, I do believe, is alive.
A masterpiece game even in 2023, somebody like Nightdive Studios should do a full remake.
MovieHeretic This guy is correct! I recommend everyone to read that book, short and simple... and very spooky
It is so nice to hear somebody give this game a bit of praise for a change :)
The Thing is one of the most underrated movies in history, and imo the greatest movie ever made. Its truly a masterpiece.
I don't think you know the definition of underrated
@@italianfoodname534 technically he's kinda right cause people fucking HATED it when it came out. Although now it's considered a staple in the horror genre
@@AshenAlbaz0079 so it's not underrated. dumbfuck
@@italianfoodname534 he doesn't
Saw the movie on old school late night SciFi Channel as a teenager. Somehow got my hands on a copy of the game? Played it on my grandpa's laptop over the course of a few months but I have a vivid memory of playing it from start to finish during Xmas vacation in a rented cabin at Lake Arrowhead, CA.
The remastered game just came out and I'm anxious to play it for the nostalgia berries.
But John Carpenter is still alive... hes even going to make another Halloween film.
Gggman reviewing this? NICE, love his reviews and this game
would you ever review the silent hill games?
Spicy Skeleton Would like that too.
He likes them
Cool! I've been waiting for a review of this game, Thanks!
0:04 vibe check
Hooh, I remember seeing Spoony review this one way back when. Interesting to see someone else take a crack at it.
Hey Gman, Did you hear about the Remaster?
So happy NightDive is handling it
This is one of the most underrated games ever and one of the best horror shooters. Atmosphere in this game is just awesome.
"When horror is done right, you don't have to ask why." - Stephen King.
Always fun to come back to one of the first videos I saw from you. Keep up the good work
Does anyone know where you can get this game for pc? I never finished it on the original xbox and I´ve always wanted to pick it up again and finish the fight
There is a copy up on TheIsoZone, if you cannot find a copy to buy.

Hope this helps, somewhat.
Javasboi I found one in Cash and culture....ahh shit there's a sale today! I missed it! Noooooooo!
Congrats on 100k didnt even realize it had already happened
Completed this last week lol great credits song
I watched The Thing after seeing one of the practical effects they used. How on earth could they say it was bad it was the most realistic effects I've seen yet.
Whoever said it was bad?
Damn this game was underrated. I remember the first time one of my team transformed. I was freaking terrified and ended up killing myself by spraying my flame thrower, running around and screaming. Great game.
With Night Dive working on the remaster, hopefully they can include a crosshair that changes color when you damage enemies if you choose free targeting, take squad mates with you for boss fights, have your squad mates turn into the Thing at random like the original developers intended, and get Kurt Russell back to voice R.J. MacCready.
fuse box count +1 *ding
I got that reference :)
Tbh I didn’t think the prequel was that bad
Good on continuity, bad on special effects. Especially when the 1980 one still stands the test of time
Double standards.
@Unrandom Encounter Yeah the original was a classic
@Zack Scoggins Main reason I liked the prequel was cause continuity
It's just a shame they replaced all the practical effects with bad visual effects. The movie itself was decent if a bit more of the same.
Idk if anyone is gonna read this in time but if you didn't already know, as of 6/6/2024, Nightdive Studios is set to reveal The Thing Remastered tomorrow 6/7/2024 on IGN Live, God is so good
The Thing is one of my favorite movies, and when I was young I thought this game looked great, but after seeing thespoonyone's review I realized how flawed it was
That fucktard?
