I can’t imagine what the Class Number is now. Mine was 389 and we were under DOJ back then on a retired naval base for 6.5 months of training including two hell weeks. Then when out it was trainee torture time of working every shift without sleep and if you did fall asleep during that FTO cycle you were done. Then we had a 6.5 test in Immigration Law and Spanish that could end you if you failed. Then a final test at 10 months in the same. At one year your probation period ended. You were no longer a Border Patrol Agent (T), you were a GS-9 Border Patrol Agent. A year after that you became a Journeyman Border Patrol Agent. The only other step beyond that was a Senior Border Patrol Agent. It meant that the only authority above you was the ranks from the railroad tracks, Oak Leaves, Eagles, and Stars like a pseudo military organization. Now a days from what I have been told the classes are shorter, easier, and no more former DI’s or Gunnies in your face. Everyone gets to be a GS-12 journeyman. No 6.5 month Academies or post Academy testing and ironically no Spanish requirement. The trainee with the mustache would not have survived the brow beating. I didn’t when I showed up in 1998.
