- Kyung-Wha Chung plays Brahms violin concerto with Andre Previn and Kölner Rundfunksinfonie Orchester.
The performance took place in Köln in December 1996.
I. Allegro non troppo 1:00
II. Adagio 24:18
III. Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace 33:28
I remember Kyung Wha Chung from the seventies, when she was a young person, playing Tchaikovsky´s violinconcerto in Reykjavik, Iceland. My first LP with her playing, was the Bruch violinconcerto. That was when she became my favourit. I bought all of her recordings that I could find, but one was missing: The Brahms violinconcerto. Years ago, I gave up looking, and this is the first time I hear her play the Brahms concerto. Surprise, surprise. I´m very happy with it.
jon holger Holm She did record Brahms concerto in 2000 on EMI (now Warner) with Simon Rattle and Vienna Phil. Do check it out along with other videos of her Brahms concerto performances on my channel.
By the way, I didn't know she performed in Iceland too. Thank you for the new information.

Decades ago (pre-9/11) I was in NYC for a Saturday lunch date and just on whim bought a rush ticket to a NY Phil evening concert. I didn't even care what was on the program, but lo and behold KWC was there to play this concerto. (I was fortunate to get a great orchestra ticket.) When she played I was absolutely transformed: she played with fire, with passion, with almost a wildness that couldn't be contained. The audience was transfixed and rapt, and when she finished, we went wild! Everyone stood and clapped and shouted. She came out four times for applause (but did not play an encore). To this day, it remains one of my greatest concert experiences.
Yes you were really fortunate as you say. Thank you for sharing your cherishable memory.

Her playing of Brahms is just incredible and hauntingly beautiful
indeed
One of the greatest violinists ever! A Legend in her own Lifetime!
There are many performers with beautiful tone, and many performers with perfect technique, but only Kyung-hwa Chung plays the thoughtful Brahms that resonates with the heart. It feels like my mother's warmth touches my heart...
Brahms is the most sophisticated concerto , takes power and maturity, Chung's rendition is near perfect.
Musicality, technique, temperament, joy, fun, heroism, ecstasy, a very beautiful woman with her superb violin.......its all there. Combined with Brahms' violin concerto this is a top achievement.
She is AMAZING! .... OMG ... She is incredible. No one can plays with so much passion. Thank God for Kyung Wha Chung!
She is my favorite! Do also check out Sayaka Shoji, she is also extremely passionate and intense!
Kyung Wha Chung is one of the very very best. She makes everything she plays comes alive.
The True Legendary Violinist! We all are proud of her!
What a great artist ❤❤ she’s so inspiring…
You can really see the passion in her expression every time she plays.
I went to a performance in the 1970's in Middlesbrough Town Hall UK, when she was very young - wonderful. So pleased I have heard her againon this video. What a talent!

She knows how to express every last bit emotion in each note she plays! I can't get the same emotions from other players!
Chung's emotion and dedication to music is just wonderful. She is very passionate and always emotionally charged, yet never gets heavy handed. She is one of the greatest legends.
I just got goosebumps all over me as soo n as she started to play her violin. Simply Amazing.

True Talent!! I saw her when she was 16. I was so impressed of her ever since..! I was 15 then! So Proud of HER..Kyung Wha Chung.
The very best performance of this concerto
Such a beautiful and magnificent performance by this great artist like as Chung , truly breathtaking and so inspiring by her playing!
Anyone else come back to this video frequently? Always a good listen.
This woman's intonation is unbelievable! What a delight to hear such precision on top of a heartfelt musical interpretation.
She's so into the music it's almost as if her soul is the music itself. Amazing.
It's beautiful ... She is in complete control and almost appears to be serving the sound and stoy of this piece to the audience
The greatest violinist ever...a true legend. In memory of Elizabeth Holborn violin instructor.
when it comes to Brahms no one can beat Kyung-Wha Chung..this concerto fits into her style..
It's a superb rendition. However, there are still a few equally good and better renditions, though. Mutter, Shoji and Oistrakh, for instance.
***** I think you are the one who's polluting youtube with chauvinistic remarks. Everyone has his opinion and no one has the right to say he is wrong.
Korea couldn’t have a better ambassador. She stands above all what Korea should be proud of. Long live Kyung Wha Chung.
Amazing power of concentration and artistry. Thank you Kyung Wha for your passion and determination!
Every one of her performances is unique in its own way. What an artist. Such a charming lady too. This is probably the most confident I've seen her.
beautifull artist ...she looks also so kind person....beautifull execution
I think I found a new favorite violinist!
Tremendous passion in her playing. Bravo!
Kyung and the rest of the musicians and (of course) not forgetting Brahms's talent, must have been Heaven sent!....simply incredible!!!
Quite simply - one of the all time GREAT artists.
Heard/saw her live in the late seventies. She was an amazing player then and still is in this recording. Incredible authority from the very first bowstroke. I remember that she used to bob up and down like mad - this physicality seems to have moderated, but she still makes some sudden movements when playing here. Extraordinary musician, awesome (Juilliard/Galamian) technique. Truly a pleasure.
Interesting to see the instrument close-up: presumably either the 'Ferni' or 'Rode' del Gesu, both c. 1732. Fingerboard is starting to look as if it could use some TLC - it must get a real hammering!
Brilliant! Such fire, passion, and uncompared musicality.
and loved how she gave a rose to Previn at the end.
The billions of neurons in the human brain are capable of more connections then there are atoms in the universe. During the first movement cadenza you can see Chung in close-up making a few million of those connections, an extraordinary performance.
Many many thanks for posting.
Such a LEGEND!
Her last name is MONSTER!
Very dynamic. Very good.
She is a legend!!!!!
Holy smoke she’s beyond magnificent.
everything's right here - rich vibrant orchestra, fine conductor and exceptional soloist

always she is on top of my list
Brava
I think her expression happens in real time and she responds to music naturally. She lives in the moment .... Somehow she oozes this!
What an orchestra, with André Previn at his sensitive best, which sets the scene for Kyung_Wha Chung to overwhelm us with such confidence and humility, beauty and power, playing the magic of Brahms on a plane of perfection that few can reach, and all so profoundly real, human and humane in feeling, colour, mood and expression.
Kyung Wha Chung is amazing... !! She has very good modulation, expression, technique, colors, bow control, sound, EVERYTHING!!!!!
this concerto is so incredibly beautiful. The mixture of the melodic first theme, the rhytmic second theme and some amazing side-themes in the solo violin, like the sugary sweet melody that differs so beautifully from the rhythmic rest make it sound great. Also the solo part is incredible, as Brahms was no violin player and often ignored tips from friends who told him his violin parts were bordering on the impossible.
Understandably Brahms never attempted to write another violin concerto.
Love!
The ending of the first movement made me cry. Such an awesome performance!
Kyung Wha Chung is my favorite Asian violinist. She is special, she understands a lot. Wonderful interpretation.
She arpeggiates the opening chords, which is something I appreciate.
LEGEND!
In my opinion, this is one of the greatest performances of the Brahms Violin Concerto - up there with other great recordings like Hilary Hahn's, Itzhak Perlman's, and Ida Haendel's. Chung demonstrates superb musicality and accuracy here!
She seems possessed. If only everyone in this world pursued their careers with the same passion. A gift to the world.
I just fall in love with her violin play!!! I cannot help jaw dropping.
She plays with great authority. It is good to see Andre Previn, whom I admired as a jazz pianist in the 1950s and 1960s.
Super interpretação! Identifico-me com seu estado de espírito... Parabéns!!!!!!!!!!!!
Always dedication and intensity in her performances. Wonderful rendition of the Brahms.
So hauntingly beautiful....it makes me cry...
Her bowing almost feels like slashing with one-edged sword..
It's so electrifying to witness such violin player and human being.
I sincerely appreciate uploading this to UA-cam.
She's quite emotive when she plays. Lovely.
The look of relief on her face on the last note=priceless. Such passion.
damn she give me the chills and goosebumps
Fabulous! I have tended to forget about this lady's wonderful Violin playing over the years, with all the other stars coming and going. I have always preferred Gidon Kremer's version with Leonard Bernstein and play it at least weekly, while I work. I am certainly glad to have reconnected with her! I
She gave me goosebumps and I cried :)
It's perfection! Nothing else need be said
Just love the way she interacts with the orchestra.
I fell in love with violin concertos just a little under a year, and whenever i tried listening a concerto that i have not listened to, i know whose version to look for, most of the violin concertos i found Ms. Chung's being my favorite version: Mendelssohn, Bruch, Walton, Beethoven, i am sure the list will go on...She's the most exceptional of all violinists i heard
All her recordings has its merits, whether one find them suitable to their taste or not, because she's been always very reluctant recording artist who wouldn't come to the recording session unless she thinks she's absolutely ready. Her Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Bruch, Mendelssohn are all highly regarded as well as 20C repertoires such as Bartok, Prokofiev, and Berg.
Thanks for sharing so many of Ms.Chung's concert videos, they are the REAL GEMS! She is the most dedicated and passionate!
I was first amazed by the Decca 1972 legendary recording, now i bought the whole Decca Set by Ms.Chung, Decca made such good recordings that it was if i were in the concert hall listening to live performances. Next i will get the Warner/EMI set. I got moved to the extent that i got goose pumps on me even on a hot summer day outside. That's her power of music on me! :)
As one man who shares same nationality with Ms.Chung, I'm so glad to hear how many people loved her, Thank to all of you who loves her , and I thank just as an one of the mere man of South Korea.
There is no so called "nationality" in music. To be honest, i was a little scared of her the first time i saw her, she looked cold and stern, too serious and tense... But my ears and soul surrendered to her voice of music, as a human, i have found the ONE violin voice i was yearning for , so sure will be the same feeling when i meet the ONE person in my life :)
Living legend!
O just the sheer JOY shining from her face at the end! She started off a great violinist and became an even greater one over her career - an exceptionally beautiful woman whose physicality conveys an extra-musical sense, weaving back into the music not just emotions, but an emphatic directional command of the composer’s intentions if and as realized in the ideal performer. Her emerald and rose dress is like a perfume, or the cherry on top of the sundae!!
I have never seen such spirit in an artist before!
Sometimes heaven send forth this kind of gift to lowly people like me. Thank you.
Kyung Wha, the unbeatable frontrunner of Chung trio in US in her super Brahms Concerto!
I could watch her play all day! Fascinating to say the least.
This woman is absolutely amazing. This passion, this dedication to the instrument are breathtaking.
WOW Amazing !....Chung's determined mother sold the family house in Korea to buy her a Stradivarius violin. In 1967 she decided to participate in the Edgar Leventritt Competition, and for the first time in the history of the Leventritt competition, the judges declared two winners; both Chung and Zukerman for first place.
She is indeed ●▬▬▬▬Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄ƷWONDERFULƸ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ▬▬▬▬●
She is donating her gifted talent to children in rural area in Korea these days.
I think it is impossible such kind of great performance unless the passion of human soul and The God's spirit overlap . It's so intellectual and spiritual ! Kyung Wha Jeong ! The existing legend !
Yes, actually she considers the "spirit of God" as one of the greatest inspirations in her life as a musician...and as a person. At least that's what I get from an interview she did with one of Korean TV stations.
She is absolutely flawless!! Sensational and magnificent!! I love Kyung Wha Chung! Next to Itzhak in my book! She deserves more praise!!! Also, love the 3 minutes of just her face lmaoo
The best ever! Kamsamnida
Kamsamnida=감사합니다
Incredible... brilliant....
Beautiful!!!!!!
Wow...this is truly amazing. What an emotion and concentration! This concert goes beyond all my expectations.
LEGEND.
Congratulations also to Maestro Previn and to this highly musical and skilful virtuoso orchestra ! Chamber music between an orchestra and a great soloist is not an everyday occurrence, and doesn't happen by chance . . . Bravo to all involved.
