This could have been a very expensive week for me but I'm successfully holding back from the really big games. I decided to back Storyfold: Wildwoods but didn't see a reason to go for the deluxe version. Two thirds of the backers are going for the basic version which is a bit surprising in a world where it seems backers normally gravitate to the highest pledge levels.

Lands of Evershade is full of AI Art. The whole game art looks like a high fantasy Midjourney discord channel with no clear design philosophy. A little bit of everything thrown into the mix to get messy artwork. It is so clear that AI was heavily used to create this box art and many of the other artwork in this campaign. RIP Awaken Realms for me. They'll make a ton of money now though.

I know they “use” it in some way. I wish they’d be a little clearer but 🤷♂. In the end, it’s a line for some people and not for others
They confirmed that they use AI for concept art, which totally kills one of the most creative processes. There have been mass redundancies in the videogame industry in the last 2 years, especially in the art concept sector. It is just a question of time until they wont need more artists, or let some go, because they arent needed anymore, like recently in the videogame, animation, film and music industry.
You can bet they'll use AI for the story as well, wouldn't surprise me that's why they cut more gameplay. It's a lot easier to do when 90% of what you are doing you can use AI for. And if the claim is true that it's almost done I have no doubt about it.
This really sucks, which is the reason i won't buy any new AR titles anymore. Puerto Rico was my last, because Ravensburger made sure they can't use AI for this project. Using AI for concept art in boardgames is an extremely sad turn of events. I am glad that at least in comics readers completely boycott any projects that use AI, because they respect the artists enough to make sure that their art is appreciated!
Yeah, it's quite sad to see a larger team resort to ai artwork. We do all of our own artwork in house and spend so much time on it, but it's worth it because our vision comes to life.
To the question of would you consider lands of evershade if it wasn't made by Awaken Realms: tbf, I would prefer if it wasn't made by them, based on their track record of rulebooks being kinda bad and while narratives are great, gameplay is falling short. I watched the Shelfside review and it convinced me to get this. The only thing that i don't like is splitwave shipping, and wave 2 getting delivered late 2026 (so most likely 2027), which is an insane timeline if you don't split it. Getting the SG box a year later than your game is kinda pointless, because would you play the game knowing that there is an extra amount of content coming? No, I wouldn't, or if you do, by the time the SG box arrives, you are most likely going to be done with the game already and just wasted money on a box you don't need. I hate this practice when it comes to crowdfunding. Incorporate stretch goals into the main box, and release extra content as an expansion in a new campaign once your first one ships.
Their narratives aren't great. Etherfields (while a fun puzzle game) is a mess of a story, Tainted Grail is very basic, I would argue ISS V is their best story but it falls off at the end.
Thanks for the thoughts, as with the other comments posted early, it certainly feels like the board game bubble is stretching too much and the consumers are tiring of it all.

Kinda want to see what they can do with Diablo. Especially if multiplayer
If you're interested in a Diablo board game, also take a peek at Odalin and its hack 'n slash mode, since it has some Diablo-esque vibes. (But it probably has a bit too much added stuff that you might not be looking for.)
Awaken Realms games have great table presence, great components, great marketing, and a lot of visual sexiness that translates to a high price tag. much like CMON. I am skipping Lands of Evershade and waiting to see if it gets a reprint. I have no desire to give them a free loan as I have been disappointed with their game play thus far (Nemisis, STALKER). The player board is great, I want to see if they put the same thought into the game itself. I do not know what this brings versus "The Story of Many" or "Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread" or "Dungeon Universalis" or "Tanares Adventures" or, or... I think you will like Catharsis if you try it. I like it better than Dice Throne in many ways. Dungeons of Doria is best played solo IMHO
No one talks about how all AR games arrive basically DOA, meaning there's zero support from AR. They release faq and errata for all the typos found by players (instead of playtesters and editors) and that's it, they move on to the next game on their conveyor. You have rules questions? Good luck with finding answers, cause AR have no presence on bgg. Oh, and all their campaign games have rather good start, but they slog towards the end, so why this one will be any different? I have zero interest in Lands of Evershade BECAUSE it's from AR😂
2 дні тому+1
I really wish their QA was a lot better on those issues.
That's the complete opposite of my experience. Tainted grail was too grindy and the released new rules to fix it. Etherfields had save issues and they released a new save system and new modes to avoid some problems. They supported all their games I picked. Why they didn't catch those problems before release is another issue, but you cannot say they abandon their games. I really thought both those game had great ideas but shipped too unpolished and were not great games. But ISS Vanguard is amazing, their first great game out of the box in my opinion. I'm considering Lands of Evershade because of ISS Vanguard, but they have to increase the value. Just 3 15-hour adventures in the core is not enough, but I'm probably picking it up if they get to 6 and the playthrougths look good enough.
@@tarao666 I've played all the 3 games you've mentioned. I 100% agree with you that the ideas behind these game (and all of their games) are very appealing. Base games are pretty good. TG last knight was very unbalanced (too hard), TG age of legends armies mechanic dragged the game (though sounded cool in theory) - releasing update pack was cool, but in reality how many people do replay all the campaigns again? Red Death campaign was terrible mechanically, made by sadists for masochists (though the story was great as always). All of the Etherfields expansions had lots of issues and misprints and even on official AR forum dedicated to EF they didn't answer questions - is it not lack of support? Map 2.0 just broke the game and made the whole game phase meaningless. ISS expansions campaigns still have unresolved issues and unanswered questions, so I count it as abandoning the game. I'm a bit upset with AR, you can tell)) I don't appreciate their trying to correct issues and lack of testing/proofreading during the next gamefound campaign if the sales are good, like it was with TG. I just don't believe in their ability to deliver polished and property proofreaded/playtested game the first time around. And with so many fantastic games I don't have room for imperfect (subjectively) games. ISS is my favourite from their games too, but it's the last one and the only one still in my collection)) I've even sold Kings of Ruin the day it arrived without any desire no try it out( After that no more AR games for me. Yeah, picking their games after they deliver and only if the whole thing is great (not just the first adventure) is a good idea!
@@kirillkrymskiy1739 I can understand that. I really quit on TG and Etherfields so I dodged Kings of Ruin, and I don't have the expansion of ISS, but I'm mid campaign with the core and I had no problem at all till now. We are enjoying it a lot. But their tendency to ship games undertested and unbalanced is a fact, and a pity, because the ideas and concepts are amazing. I'll follow this one closely and still need to check playthroughs to see if the mechanics are good enough, but they definitely need to add value to the core pledge. With only 3 adventures it's very lacking.
@@tarao666 I've enjoyed ISS core a lot, both story and mechanics, and had almost zero rules questions. I was mid Lost Fleet campaign when Primal and several other anticipated games arrived, so ISS was put on pause, but I'll get back to it. Hope you'll find no issues with your playthrough too, but be careful about expansion campaigns. Some things are better, but the quality control is worse.
I love the SMT universe, but holy moley that’s an expensive bunch of minis. It do not help that it cost $130!!!! In shipping for me. Caledonia however, seems very interesting. The expansion looks like it ads a whole new game to the base. I have not played it myself though, so not sure if I want it because of hype or if I reaaally want it. I already backed Millenia so shipping would not be that bad either.
Ugh. I’m to the point where I shouldn’t want any board game related videos. I shouldn’t buy any more games because I have way, way too many of them. There are so, so many good to great games that are produced now that no human can play them all enough to make the cost sink worth it. I get told “to each their own”, but let’s be honest here, most people that are buying so many games don’t play them all or don’t play them enough to make the purchase worth it by exploring the game’s strategies. Watching videos about games then morphs into an exercise in FOMO and envy. It’s an addiction, really. I wonder how many people that watch multiple channels like yours, MVM, Dice Tower, boardgameco, etc. are actually resisting buying too many games every year after viewing. I know it’s subjective, but how many purchases in a year is too much? How much money spent is too much? I would love, love, love to play Avalon with the miniatures, but to get the all in with the washed minis is $250 when shipping is factored in. Oof. That’s 5-8 other board games at normal, retail pricing.
As I posted on a couple others, thanks for posting your thoughts. The board game bubble is out of control and over saturated with games and huge costs for pieces/stuff not game play. It is overwhelming the consumer. It’s great to have options, but at $100-250 a pop… I have been considering just turning it all off for a year and play my current games. Especially when 90% of any game enjoyment is in your mind or the friends you play with(barring terrible games) and not another “new” game. But don’t get me wrong, I backed two high dollar >100$ games already this month… ugh…. Thank you to the creators for the great games and themes. but man, I’m really second guessing my consuming vs enjoying.
@@TimYoung1984 it's all relative to how much money you earn honestly. I wouldn't buy games for them just to sit on shelves and I think it's important to resist going all in on every game that you want. If expansions and cosmetic crap comes to retail, wait until retail and just get the best bang for your buck option. When it comes to sundrops, you can do this shading yourself on minis and doesn't really take any skill, there are many videos on youtube. You can save yourself tons of money by doing it yourself and it's going to be the exact same thing that AR is selling to you.
@@12600GreyMy favorite games of the year were purchased for less than $40. I absolutely love Creature Comforts and Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle Earth. Both have been games I instantly wanted to, and did, play again. They both play in an hour.
@@siposbalint2000Eh, I don’t think it even has much to do with amount of money earned. As I mentioned, I have only experienced gamers who end up saying that they have too many games. There is a constant flow of “shelf of shame” commentary. Having money has nothing to do with getting the games played, and played enough that the full breadth of the game is experienced and understood well enough to strategize properly.

@@TimYoung1984 I don’t care as much about strategizing properly like you said, but enjoyment, ease of access and times you’ll actually be able to play matter more. Which is why price matters, but not ALWAYS as much in that way. Marvel united is my kids favorite and one of my favorites. So I’ve spent unarguably too much on it. But if I could buy say 10 other games for the same price but they never get played is it really “better”? That’s why my main consideration is not whether or not a game is necessarily “amazing” or rating 100000% super of of 100, but a game where it’s going to meet you where you’re at being able to PLAY it. Because, for me at least, that’s why I’m in the hobby. I’ve gotten rid of plenty of “amazing” games because I couldn’t get them played enough for me to justify keeping them for the sake of it
The standee edition of Avalon doesnt come with stretch goals. I was wanting Evershade but Shelfside felt it wouldnt be great as a solo so im going to pass.
Thanks for acknowledging that solo will probably be fine. But I feel my comment about solo gameplay is also coming from a place of yet another ~$200 price tag (as sounds like we should get the deluxe for the save system.). So great game, but do you need another. So just trying to balance the whole picture, not meaning to say anything is bad about the game. Thanks!
$130 for a "special edition" of Lands of Evershade that comes with hero minis and mostly standees for enemies doesn't sound very special to me. It sounds way overpriced! It costs a freaking whopping $200 if you want the special version plus the enemy mini expansion that replaces standees with minis. In most campaigns, you get all that for $100-130.
@@Gamebent1 i think it's just a massive amount of cardboard components that got really expensive in the recent years, I think the price point considering you get the stretch goals is fine, but addons are really expensive for what they are and most likely aren't worth it if they are coming to retail either way. I backed the special edition, everything else will most likely be bought if I like the game enough once it arrives
Relative to other AR games, it is a little bit more expensive but not much. Stalker is $165 for the core + minis. ISS vanguard was $179. Etherfields was $150. This one is expensive because of all the custom books and cardboard.
@@Dullahan3470 Comparing an overpriced campaign to other less expensive but still overpriced campaigns by the same company is not a viable comparison. How about comparing it to similar pledges from other companies, like Avalon, which is $100 for core pledge and all minis, or Zombie Horde, which is $110 for core pledge and all minis, or Odalin, which is $130 for core pledge and all minis?
@ AR uses pretty consistent component quality. You can make a cheaper game with cheaper components but that is apples and oranges. Evershade the player handbook alone would be like a $60 MSRP book. The printed components are very expensive to produce and a huge reason it is more expensive than even other AR games.
went for premium, 2 other expansions, no sundrop, no lesther, no figures, metal coins ... pretty cheap for all the gameplay and stretch goals ... only the DnD modules cost pretty much the same as what i paid

I want Lands of Evershade but Arydia is coming soon!
Nice! Well…maybe though except for the wallet
Gonna try to maybe trade for catharsis
No one talks about how all AR games arrive basically DOA, meaning there's zero support from AR. They release faq and errata for all the typos found by players (instead of playtesters and editors) and that's it, they move on to the next game on their conveyor. You have rules questions? Good luck with finding answers, cause AR have no presence on bgg. Oh, and all their campaign games have rather good start, but they slog towards the end, so why this one will be any different?
I have zero interest in Lands of Evershade BECAUSE it's from AR😂
"...wants to do DnD but can't..." selling point for me + based on gameplay I have seen = All in.
Solo DnD? Yes thank you.
I think that’s exactly its audience too. Phew thought I was imagining things (like usual) feeling li,e I was the only one seeing it
I love the SMT universe, but holy moley that’s an expensive bunch of minis.
Holy shipping!
The miniatures are coming… Haha!
It’s great to have options, but at $100-250 a pop…
I have been considering just turning it all off for a year and play my current games.
I’ve gotten rid of plenty of “amazing” games because I couldn’t get them played enough for me to justify keeping them for the sake of it
Why does Avalon looks so much like Gloratha: The Gods’ War?
🤷♂
The standee edition of Avalon doesnt come with stretch goals.
I was wanting Evershade but Shelfside felt it wouldnt be great as a solo so im going to pass.
Thanks for posting, ya there are so many games that might provide a better solo. We are beyond a saturation point of board games.
Yeah I’d imagine it would be a multi hand handful
Huh? You can solo it easy with 2 companions max. So 3 characters.
@laxuscloud2495 🤷♂️ That's just what the dude said, lol. He didn't say it wasn't possible, just not the best way to play.
Yeah prices has definitely gone up
@@Dullahan3470 Comparing an overpriced campaign to other less expensive but still overpriced campaigns by the same company is not a viable comparison.
Evershade ... you cant play DnD solo ... you can play Evershade solo ... thats the drawn point of it for me
If that what works for you, sure thing. It’s fair
went for premium, 2 other expansions, no sundrop, no lesther, no figures, metal coins ... pretty cheap for all the gameplay and stretch goals ... only the DnD modules cost pretty much the same as what i paid
Have you checked out popularity yet?
I did not
What stands for dnd if i may ask?
dungeons and dragons
@christtomato1
I thought so, than i dontnunderstand the meaning of his compairision
But thx
Sorry! Should have explained and clarified in The video!
clans of caldonia isn't that hard.
Probably not all things considered. But it’s all also relative. Still heavier than more than a fair portion of my games
That fair. My wife had a total of like 3 years boardgaming exp and she taught me Clans, that what I'm basing my assumption on.
