Beautifully done video. I remember when these stories were released on video in colour. Now, of course, they can restore any black and white into colour. But this was a revolution in the 90s.
I personally think they should release all the 60s in colour because the results, as done by many UA-cam Who, have been incredible. Great channel. Keep up the good work and Merry Xmas :)
Thank you for your kind comment. Merry Christmas to you too!
Small point, me and my mates did colour test reservations in 1987ish - I have the source tapes to prove it. Keith Hunter has actual test recordings of his own experiments. This is noted online in several places... The DW production office was not at all interested. It took all those years for the Restoration team to form, and a brilliant job they did. My story may be told again if there is interest.
If you ask me, I'd say that with enough funding, The Ambassadors of Death should be fully re-colorized due to how muddy the colors looked on the DVD
100% agree, however, I don't know how far Chroma Dot recovery has come on.
@@IsaacSigmar Well, there are a fuckton of AI tools, what I'm curious about is if they just manually produced the blue component and then enhanced the red and green components what the result might look like.
Easilly ??? Pa! they were different sizes, shapes and speeds ! Not at all broadcast quality , but very good. I would take shot by shot fixing, the BBC didn't think there was money in it.
Your coverage of the later colourisation work is in part new to me and interesting. I had to fully reconvert the 525 cassette multi-gen copies after doing my real work at BBC Enterprises. RSC is news to me !
a miracle that we have so much of Jon's work in full color now (barring dinos Ep1.) I hope the next collection set announced is a Pertwee season (as rumor suggest.)
The Betamax off-air color copies are American, recorded from WNED in Buffalo, WTTW in Chicago, and KCET in Los Angeles. They were not Canadian. The NTSC tapes recovered from BBC Canada are from TV Ontario and CKVU in Vancouver.
Just someone who happened to do a taping
Brilliant work thank you.
Fascinating - thanks!
Love this, very informative
Hi I’m not sure if you’re still checking comments on this video, but when you’re talking about Time Monster Episode 6 and the black and white PAL quad tape could you tell me where you got the info about it being merged with the Canadian Betamax tape? From what I can see online they didn’t have Betamax recordings of The Time Monster. Thanks.
@@sonnyhale Hi, I believe I got the information from a book called "WIPED!" which is a truly fascinating book, which i believe is by Richard Molesworth. Hope that helped 👍
@@IsaacSigmar Thanks for getting back to me, unfortunately I don’t have the book myself, if you have it would you be able to double check to see what it says about Time Monster 6?
From what I’ve read on the restoration team website and the linked website whoniverse, the episodes that use the Betamax tapes for the chroma are The Silurians, Ambassadors of Death 5, Terror of the Autons and The Daemons. The chroma for the Time Monster was sourced from Canadian 2 inch Quad tapes, not Betamax tapes.
Your right it was magical
I thought from the first Jon Pertwee episode on it was only in colour?
Yes they were all shot in colour but as this video explains, after routine junking at the BBC left only Black and White film copies, the colour would have to be returned somehow using modern technology. Hope that clears things up, Merry Christmas 🎄
@@IsaacSigmar thank you for explaining this! I will watch the whole thing. Happy Christmas to you too and a 💎 2023!
Should go back to the original off air tapes and clean them up and grade the colours
Even this video gets across the point that the originals don't exist. That's the whole problem.
@@tortysoft the copy of Terror of The Autons recorded in 1976 is very good quality..Just need RSC on it
