✅Lots of skim coating questions answered in this video: ua-cam.com/video/NlqWGxvZu8c/v-deo.html
Would you skim right over after ripping off stick on wall paper or do I need to take off the residue
I use panel ray readymix. The red bucket for skimming. Sticks very good and very smooth.
Quick and to the point. I love it
Exactly what I wanted to know. Thank you! I was wondering if the lightweight compound would pass the fingernail test and you basically answered my question.
We used to take a plasticStucco roller get somebody to do I half a wall. By the time they do that the timing is just right take a flat trial and run over everything. That's a good way to put an even coat on quickly. The way they skim coat look like it take forever and how you going to tell her this evening. You use a trolling. Andy got a straightedge trial you can use that to make sure you don't have no make sure everything is even. Try it sometime I've been doing it like that for years
I always use 90 minute joint compound or 45 for my first coat . Then I use the green lid All purpose compound for the second coat 🤙🏽
Thank you finally someone who knows he's stuff 😎
All purpose drys strong, too. I only use hot mud for thick texture
Do you ever get those annoying eye pockets by putting the second coat with the all purpose..?
5 min first coat to fill n then 20 min from then on to finish 🙌
@sergiocc17 Yeah but it doesn't matter. For smooth walls to light texture use all purpose then plus 3. Put a knife full on half of the wall in a 3 foot section then smooth it out. Plus 3 goes on last to fill those holes and makes it 5x easier to sand, it goes on thin though. For knockdown use hot mud first.
Thanks So Much Very Helpful You Make It Look Easy but I know lots of work & practice
Thanks Paul, you've become an invaluable source of info for me😎😍😎😍😎
Thank you very much for answering my question with a video. I figured all purpose because of sandability. Great job on your skin coat in the video as well!
Thanks Paul✌
I agree with you. The light weight is way too soft/ not durable. I often like to use the mid weight (purple lid) compound for my top coats.
Just what I needed to hear thanks so much 🙏
I like to brush it with Gards problem surface sealer first to keep the bubbles down from the ripped paper before I skim coat first coat will all purpose then use light weight mud for Finnish coat.
Shouldn't you use hot mud for your first coat?
Paul- thank you for all the information! Do I need to paint on a primer first if I’m skim coating over a painted and textured wall? I’m going to use the all purpose joint compound like you recommended
Always enjoy hearing what you have to say
USG is pretty good, and I can tell you're a pro pro 👊. I'm kinda semi pro I guess...I've found a keeper in the ProForm Light Compound with the carolina blue lid. Straight out of the bucket, it can leave air bubbles, but a cup or 2 of water mixed in 5 gallons changed everything. Spreads like butter, dries as hard as all purpose, sands like the 45 minute mix.
Hi was wondering whether the gypsum powder bags where u add water could work too?
Thank you!
sending drywall love from your uk fam
I'm just about to do this on 2100 sq ft of raw drywall. Useful tips, thanks.
Thank you
I happy to help. Thank you for watching and commenting!💥👍🏻😎
Excellant vid ,I use to lightly brush sanding over wallpaper then take broom dust off.20 min.bag mix to prep deep problems pull tight.U find a little prep work goes a long way.Wallpaper always a problem bubbles and air gaps.I say maybe U like wallpaper sealer your call.Keep up the great vids thank you
Did you know you can skim over wall paper but you have to cut back loose edges where they meet and same thing prep work. But check with your paint dealer to insure you have all the knowledge.I done it,a lot easier to do.
Is it a good idea to primer before skim coating a painted surface?
No need. Just add some sika bonding adhesive to your mud instead of water. It sticks way better than just mud
Thank you🙏🏽
Would you recommend the same product for glossy wall paint?
And do you need to scrape the glossy walls beforehand or can that step be skipped with this product?
Thanks for your videos! About how much water do you add to a half bucket of all purpose joint compound? When I put the second skim coat over a primed (zinsser 1-2-3) old textured wall it bubbled & dried out real quick even as the roller applied - any advice? (no issues in the first coat)
What is the best one for a concrete wall plus 3 or can I use all purpose
Where I live most houses are concrete
I use all purpose for everything, never failed me.
But it takes forever to dry 😢
@@danightryder Add plaster of paris, it will dry in less than 10 minutes.
@@tomsaywer9883 can I had hot 45?
@@danightryder Not sure, i use all purpose and plaster of paris for all coats. After you mix it, you have roughly about 15 mins to work before it starts to dry. You can control drying by how much plaster of paris you add. Saved me time and money, no need to carry different kinds of mud. I have even used it for texture.
@@tomsaywer9883 plus 3 with plaster of Paris is such a beautiful mix. Works with all purpose too.
I use 5 , 20 and 45 min for litterly everything I do and I’ve never had any issues with anything at all it works fine n it lets me do days worth of work for most ppl but All In the same day
Supposedly hot mud on a final coat flashes like all hell through the paint, how do you get around this and get a perfect paint job?
"Litterly" - LOL
Agreed. Im no professional, but just in my diy adventures the plus 3 is too fluffy. I definitely feel like the all purpose spreads easier when thinned down slightly. Thanks for the knowledge and experience! I’ve learned a lot.
Just a little tip. So the plus 3 will sand easier for you and gives a smoother looking finish.
@@michaelcarson4887 thats what Ive heard. In my experience it didnt sand any easier than all purpose. :/ both make a mess lmao
@@redscortgt93 and another benefit to plus 3 is the Mark's from sanding are not so bad. As long as you use fine.
But yes in the end a mess..lol
I’d have to say anything from the AAP garden makes the best joint compound. Lol
Cheers brother ✌🏼🇺🇸😎
im using proform now....better than both of these imo
If you're doing wallpaper or painted going over let's say an oil-based at the worst believe it or not use a yellow 100% joint compound and add wood Carpenter's glue to it when whipping it up.. Dont do it by hand. Hopper it, like knock down. Then use I level 5 knife Tape tech or whatever. Less sanding, labor, time and money. Prep maybe more. I use this at least 7-15 times a year.
Drywall Ninja Time
How many layers do you apply of skim coat on the wall??
Usually two coats. Depending on how damaged or how heavy of a texture is being skim coated over. 👍🏻
Why does it matter if the lightweight stuff is not durable? Aren’t you gonna coat it with a drywall primer, which prevents scratches?
Drywall primer doesn’t prevent scratches.🤔
When you're using the plus 3, drywall primer isn't going to do anything for it. I just mix mine with plaster. It makes it a bit more durable.
If you want perfection, listen to what the man says!
🍦🍩☕
90 or 45
What about concrete ceiling? Can i use all purpose as well?
Yes (as long as it’s on the interior of a building).👍🏻
@@PaulPeck haha yes of course. Some people suggest doing a PVA primer before skimming
@@solidust1111111ifypva helps seal the subsurface up so the moisture isnt getting immediately sucked out of the mud. Certainly wouldnt hurt
If your gonna skim...
Use plaster
👍🏻🍻🍺🤙🏼

Sure it does!✅👍🏻
