Best UA-cam channel to learn how to do mudding right
Dude had the answers to 2022 in 2018. Brilliant!
I really love your jokes and humor that you work into your vids and how detailed you are in your explanations of various techniques
Thanks for your service and saving all of us thousands of dollars on drywall projects. Praying for you and your family. God bless you, Sir.
Side lighting. So simple and smart, I would never think to do that. Then you already know before it is too late what imperfection are there. Thanks!
As someone who does skim coating professionally on texture using a 10 or 12 inch flexible broadknife after rolling on the mud scrape of all the excess firmly. Should dry in less than an hour. No sanding. Then repeat and the mud will be smooth needing only a light sand after.
Yes Sir, that's the way I go about it myself.
Side lighting has helped me produce excellent results! I actually learned that tip in the Air Force as a crew chief, the tip was for finding things dropped in ground, side light ground it anything on it casts shadow letting you find it right away
I use it to find things I've dropped too.
"actually"
Great job Guy! I always do it like you mentioned the way you do it with a 12 inch knife but for someone who's just starting and not sure about putting mud on with a knife that would do a fine job. I may try it on my next job just because I have never done it like that before. I had an old timer tell me once'if you don't learn nothing in a day it's a waisted day'. I have learned something from you today good Sir. Have a blessed day Guy✨
This works for me. Another great tip. Fast and well thought out way to get those walls smooth. Watching your videos reminds me of the many Trade School instructors who are charged with passing on their many years of knowledge. To me, experience is always the best teacher. Thanks.
Thanks, I appreciate it. I agree that experience can’t be beat. I’m sure a lot of us have seen that video from ivytech of the young guy trying to teach and he sort of gets the job done but he obviously doesn’t really know what he’s doing. And yet i had millions of views, LOL
I'm glad I found your channel! I'm moving this month into my first non-rental and plan to do a lot of this kind of work on it!
That’s the exact same texture of my walls! And it’s everywhere! I thought I had to knock the walls down n apply new ones. Thank u thank u thank u Sir❤️❤️❤️❤️ Your videos are amazing
Awesome, glad I could help solve this for you.
Thanks for another great video. I’m a 35 year old working mom and had excellent results skim coating two walls in my sons room. Now I’m ready to prime, paint, and put up my wallpaper. I did shiplap in the other walls. 👍🏻👍🏻
Glad to help, Guy
Im new to drywall finishing - my first project. My own home reni - not pro. You are an excellent teacher and I am more confident at each step because of your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
The outside pointed corners of that magic trowel look mighty sharp. If you cut off the pointed corners and put a 1/4 inch radius on the ends you will find that you will end up with much fewer scratched lines in the mud that need tidying up.
The end was funny man. This is exactly what I was looking for.
A few videos in. Love you Kilted Guy!!!! Extreme knowledge, awesome unique explanations. Wow I love your channel should have a million subs by now!!! Soon !
Thanks. if I wasn’t fighting such serious health issues for two years, I might be closer to 1 million, lol.
You know your stuff. I watched on of your videos on scraping popcorn. It helped a lot. I was able to do a whole house 3000 sq ft.
Awesome! I'm glad I could be of help in that.
you are so informative! i learned a lot! i'm on the process of skimcoating my bedroom walls and i've been using a putty knife to apply the mud and it would take me hours! did not know i could use rollers, too! this will make it a lot easier for me to coat it! thanks!
This is a great video! I used this method and here's what I discovered.
I did two rooms and a hallway (ceilings too...). I used a Magic Trowel, which was great. The existing texture was about 1/8 to 1/4" deep, no joke. I found that my best result was to roll on the compound *extremely* thick in the first run then get the Magic Trowel working. I put on the compound so thick that you couldn't see any visible texture after using the Trowel. I eventually started just dunking the entire roller straight into the 5 gallon bucket of mud. This method gave me a decent first coat, but it would take a long time to dry. Interestingly, I didn't get a lot of cracking, despite the thickness of the mud (I used the green stuff too).
You'll read that people say to thin the mud water, and I tried that at first. It just made more work because I couldn't apply a thick enough first coat with thin compound. Plus you don't have any room in a full 5 gallon bucket so you have to take mud out, mix in water, apply a bunch, add mud back in, try to get the water mix right...ugh. No way.
After the first coat was dry I would knock down the high spots and ridges with a 12" knife. I found it was pointless to sand at this stage, plus sanding would create a ton of dust, and I would have to go over the walls with a wet rag before doing the second coat - more wasted time.
Anyway, after scraping off the bumps and ridges I used a 12" knife to apply a second coat. I could never get the Magic Trowel to give me a clean smooth line on a second coat so I used the knife instead, unless texture was still showing. The Magic Trowel was invaluable for a first coat base layer.
Before the third coat I did a pretty quick full sanding, followed by a damp rag to get the dust. I found that if I did well enough on the second coat I could use a 12" knife to get a finish coat on the third pass. After the third pass I'd thoroughly sand and then do spot touch ups before a final sanding.
One last thing to note: you absolutely have to get good at using a 12" knife to do corners. Don't tape corners using this method. Just try to get angles better with each pass. It takes practice.
I read about people doing six or seven passes with thinned mud, but man, life is just too short. If absolute perfection is your goal hire a pro.
Make no mistake, this is *a lot of really hard work*, especially if you have heavy texture! But by the end you'll be a lot more confident with a mudding knife. Doing a big skim coat job is a genuine trial by fire. You'll never look at your walls the same again.
Not only did I gain a new skill, I also lowered my standards! Win - win! Good luck.
Thank you for this! I have a room we are turning into a nursery and the texture is about the same depth!
thank you for the info! I have a deeply textured walls that I need to cover and will definitely use your method to deal with them!
Thanks for sharing. I have textured walls that I have been wanting to get rid of after I get rid of the popcorn ceiling thanks to your other videos. I'm working on my list of materials and putting a game plan in place for all of my DIY projects. Thanks again. 😊
Diana, I’m really glad I’m able to help. Thanks for letting me know.
I was not thrilled with the mess of the roller and learned how to apply mud with a 14" knife. That gave me more control over different thinkers for different parts anyway. Also i was not sold on the magic trowel, it left little lines in my work. I got it super smooth with two passes of the 14" knife.
NEW SKIM COATING VIDEO COMING SOON. I just started a new job where I'll be skim coating about 800 SF of popcorn ceiling texture since it's been painted too much and we aren't sure if it has asbestos in it. I'll be doing a skip trowel texture over that, and will post a video of the whole masking to skim coating and texturing process coming soo. Comment below if this interests you, and leave the hashtag #doitright #thatkiltedguyskimcoating
Never heard of that, I’m a decent painter. I got some 40 year old walls here that maybe could use this treatment. I’m not really wanting any texture. But some of my walls that have side lighting ,look terrible no matter what I do.
I’ve been on your videos all day. Maybe there’s hope for me yet!
It's hard to learn all at once so be patient and expect to have to redo things now and then. Good luck and thanks for all the support.

OMG I figured out before but after tons of videos you're the first who mentions what MUD is. True pro.
Thanks. I try and teach instead of just demonstrate.
Hi Guy. I bought that magic trowel from your amazon page and it works so well. It was surprisingly easy to get a first coat on - hoping the second coat looks even better. Thanks for sharing this. Really doable for anyone - you don't have to be a drywall professional anymore. #DoitRight
How did it turn out?????
@@pearlperlitavenegas2023 It came out really well. I applied the joint compound with the roller and then smoothed it out with that tool. The trick is to use the tool so you only leave on trail per pass. I would definitely do this again.
Glad to hear it worked so well for you. Guy
@@BillWalters77 I'm going to do this today THANKS FOR REPLYING I feel hopeful 😁
Thank you sir for being so helpful and kind as well as informative in all your videos!!! 😊☀️
Hey thank you. I truly enjoy helping you guys learn how to #DoItRight, so thank you for your support.
Ill take it! Ive been skimming walls with a knife and pan to smooth rolled texture and this i think will save me time on this thanks! Good tip!
Cool, thanks for commenting. 😎
The magic trowel is a great tool. I like to use an 18” 3/4 lambs wool roller for application. You can run a wall quick and I like the circular pole sander. My new guys always stand straight on with those rectangle sander heads and I’ll hear it from the next room when that thing flips and gouges the wall, so I switChed to the circular heads about 5 years ago. Bigger surface area and I don’t hear those skippers anymore.
Thanks so much commenting. I appreciate it Hey, thanks so much for commenting and for subscribing. With your help we can blast past 100,000 subscribers and more!
Yeah new tapers are funny once you see them walk off we used to take bets how long until you would hear that flip or my favorite, ripped sandpaper!!! They used to be a pain on my arse! After watching them struggle to get the paper on it, the rip was always so devastating to them " ah fu*k " this sucks man... lol
Lol, that the last part was funny🤣🤣
Awesome video mate!!
Thank you!
When I can't spray for a level 5 finish, this is my method. 18" 1/2" or 3/4" nap roller, a paint sump, extended pole and 3' or 4' TapeTech skimming knifes 👍
I highly advise those who have zero experience with drywall mud to think twice before doing this especially if you're a perfectionist. My God.
Great point!
OH. MY. GOODNESS... Yess!! That is what my walls look like and that is what I am trying to get rid of!!! THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!
Awesome. Glad i could help.
You saved me thousands of dollars thank you !!!
Thanks, glad I could help you out 😎. And thanks for subscribing!

Lmao,"when we say mud, we mean joint compound" I needed to re - word that expression for years to customers, still doing today!🤣🤣🤣🤣so true 😁
Yeah, I’m sure a few of them thought I was going to get mud out of the garden and use it, LOL
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY lmfao 🤣🤣 bruh you called it , mud from the yard🤣🤣obviously you've been around the block a few times🤣🤣👌thanks bratha🤙🤙
BAD NEWS- Hey everyone, as of 9/21/20 we have some bad news. We are suddenly being kicked out of our rental due to the sale of the home, (we were planning on buying next summer) and I'm having some tough medical issues such as Prostate Cancer, Permanent Vertigo, Restless Legs, Neuropathy (nerve damage) etc. So we put out a video explaining this and many of you asked us to create a Gofundme so you could say thanks for all the help I've given you on these videos, my comments, etc. I really hesitated, as I hate asking for donations, but then you said it wasn't a donation, it was a way for you to say thanks. So if you want to know more here's the video explaining what all has been going on (moved 9 times in 12 years, my wifes 3 knee replacements, and much more). ua-cam.com/video/aRMwK_LTQQs/v-deo.html
You can also just read about it on the gofundme page at: gf.me/u/yzzrkz
NOTE: please don't contribute if it puts any strain on you at all, and there is zero expectations, or anything like that. But if you'd like to give back, Thank you.
Thank-you and take care
Good for you allowing people to help you! It’s not easy to open yourself up like that but people want to help & repay your kindness here for these free classes.
Getting older sucks when your body starts showing the wear and tear of the years. I share a number of your difficulties so DIY projects have gotten a lot more difficult. I have gotten a lot of good information and helpful tips from your videos and want to say thank you and be well.
Take IRON and your restless legs will go away immediately
Eat stewed tomatoes and your prostate will shrink and add a teaspoon of baking soda to a shot of water 2x a day chases with something sweet to drink and your cancer will miraculously stop. Do the old research and you will be shocked WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE try it
Awesome video! I generally use a knife but the magic trowel seems nice.
I have to admit that the magic trowel does leave softer lap marks. So I may use it in the future just to smooth out the mud after putting it on with a knife.
Seems like it would work really nicely! Let me know how it goes!
thanks for the awesome video!!! and thank you for your service sir!! :))
Do it right is a simple way to do it just subscribed to it for general purpose and knowledge of DIY projects thanks for sharing your information
You're welcome.
I NEED YOUR INPUT. What subjects would you like to see me cover on my channel? Be specific if you can like, 'Fixing a dent in a wall' or 'how to choose a drywall joint compound' etc. Comment below and I'll see it. Thanks! 😎👣
when do you have to seal with like kilz or oil sealer, or Gardz? After skim coat before putting primer? thanks
nicole varasteh products like Guardz are primarily for damaged areas. If you need them, use them first, then do drywall repair, then primer.
Peter Hewel No, I haven’t tried those for skim coating. We used to use knives like that to scrape the popcorn off the walls after spraying the ceiling, and they would often warp so I don’t think I would ever try them.
Thanks Kilted Guy for all the great videos you have posted. I haven't seen any of the many skim coating videos out there address this question. How do you skim coat a very small piece of wall? For instance, I have a small bathroom with a door near the corner. Like the rest of the room, there is textured wall between the door and the corner but it is very small in width: maybe 1-2 inches. How would you do that part? Thanks again for helping us homeowners learn these skills!
If you can't remove the trim, use the biggest knife you can. I sometimes buy big plastic knives and cut them down to the size I need. I call them cut knives as I can toss them after if needed.
Good stuff Guy!👍🏻 One day I’m going to tryout a Magic Trowel! #DoItRight
Try it on a skimcoat. I like how few lap marks there are so I was impressed.
And here's the link to the magic trowel again- Magic Trowel like in this video-amzn.to/2HdaN76
I've been waiting for you to try it Paul. I've done ceilings at my home with it and didn't have to sand it. Keeping the blade wet every stroke helps, I just keep a wet sponge ready.
Great info! Tyfs 😃
Great job KG
Thanks

Hi randall byrd, thank you for commenting! I truly appreciate you taking the time to say hi, thanks or ask questions. I hope to hear from you again! 😎🦶🏼
Do most professionals use this amazing skim coat tool? Just curious.
Great job 👍
Thank you!
Thanks for the great videos! I watched a lot of your skim coating ones and am starting the big project of coating the knock down texture in my house; got all the stuff from your amazon store a couple months ago, thanks for putting that together.
Just curious, the magic trowel seems to leave a lot of streaks; do you just sand them down after? Or is there something you can do to prevent that?
Thanks a bunch!
Hi, and yes the magic trowel leaves more streaks than a metal blade, but it's much more forgiving if you are a novice. So yes, just sand with 150-220 grit. Thanks for using the links and good luck!

Very interesting! I am restoring a home with plaster walls. The room I am working in presently, has patches of 5 layers of painted over wallpaper which I am removing. BUT some of the plaster wall obviously is missing its finish coat and someone many years ago painted it white. Will this method work in my situation after removing wallpaper? The drywall mud will stick to the painted over plaster?
As long as the surface is sound, clean and full it will stick. If in doubt, sand it with 80 grit first.
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Thank you very much!
You can do this with hot mud and get it all done in one day, or one wall at a time. Skim coat with hot mud, texture coat with regular mud. The moisture in the hot mud after it solidifies will help prevent air bubbles from happening while applying the texture coat.
When we say "hot mud, we mean fast setting joint compound".
NOTE: ONLY skilled journeymen should attempt this. If you don’t put it on smooth it is VERY difficult to sand. And it’s a lot more expensive and much more difficult to work with.
But thanks for sharing that.
I take care of maintenance for 52 apts, and the magic trowel is exactly what the name says
Thank you for your videos! Love them. You might want to check out the link in your Amazon store on the magic trowel. I've had trouble finding the one you use in the video, and can't tell if Amazon even still sells that width?
C c Reese Hello, the link points to a different brand but it’s basically the same thing., thanks
Great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Haven’t used that type of pole sander in years. The round ones are excellent and uses a hook and loop type sheet of sand paper.
I like both. But sometimes the round one is too spongy, and follows the contours too much whereas the flat one is more rigid and will flatten out ripples and such better. Plus I prefer the rectangular one for sanding inside angles. So for me, it's a feel of what do I need to accomplish this particular sanding task.
Thanks AF guy!
Thanks for your service
How much time do I have to level the mud before it's dry?

Hi, I have question about skimming (level 5), well prep for it, or if just going L4... should all dips in the wall be floated out? For example, I hold a 12" knife perpendicular to the studs, with one end of the knife in the corner, there is 1/16th or so dip between the two end of the knife (corners not tapered out enough apparently).
Do I leave it as is, or float it out.... does it make a difference to the eye? (walls will be a satin sheen)
your videos and information are excellent, thanks!
That’s too hard to explain sorry. Your call but walls are seldom all dead flat
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY gotcha, appreciate it. Thanks for the reply!
Thank you. Your videos are the best! I’m gonna go for it and try to do a level 5 on my knock down texture. Can I use a 1 1/4” roller to get more mud on the first coat. As a beginner, I’m worried that if I don’t get enough on I’ll need to do three coats. #doitright
Yes.
I been watching your videos all morning , im a drywall guy myself , been hanging it since i could reach the lid off a bench , started finishng a few years afterr that ,, now all the decades later and your still showing me tricks i have never saw , great videos bro , only adcice would be to stop talking about whT your gonna talk about , i had to skip through a few timess but overall excallent videos
What a guy
You are awesome sir!
Can you do this same technique on the ceiling? We're thinking of just scraping off the 'high' spots on the texture, then skim-coating over it with all-purpose mud - will this work well for that application?
Check this out- How to Skim Coat a Ceiling with a Paint Roller, the FAST & EASY Way
ua-cam.com/video/wgqbQRJcZ8c/v-deo.html
Do you have a video showing how to finish this method in the corners, small areas that can't be rolled, etc. Also, I would like to do ceiling and walls. Should I start with ceiling first, wall, or it doesn't matter. Thanks for your videos.
Tim Holter For those inside angles, I just roll it as close as I can, and get the brush texture in there as best as I can, but it’s never perfect.
Tim Holter and yes, start with ceilings first
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Thank you so much for your help. I am off to make a mess soon, but I guess doing is the only way to learn.
How long do you have to work with this stuff, before it starts drying? Do you do large walls /ceilings in sections? Thanks
Depends on humidity, Air flow, Air Temperature, mud thickness etc. But yes in sections
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Thanks. I have a staircase wall that looks awful. Its an older home and they used small drywall panels (32"x16" approx.) I can see almost every joint with a light against the wall. Looks as if they needed another coat over all the joints to level out with the rest of the board.! Actually you can see the joints in all the rooms if you look. So , lm thinking I should just level out the seams with the all purpose, and let it dry, and used the Plus 3 stuff for skimming. So in perfect conditions, approx how big of a section should I limit it to? Theres approx. 140 square feet of wall the needs done. Or should I use a plaster which seems to stay wet longer, giving more time to work with? Thanks for your input!!

Hi! None of my local stores had plus 3 (grrr!!) So I started looking at finishing compound instead. I wasn't sure if I should get all purpose light, or "topping" compound. Since skim coating seems to be the "finish" of the wall, I opted for the kind that said topping.. I'm about to try it out, which do you think is better and why? Or is it not much difference? Thanks!
Topping has a little less adhesion, which is why you can't tape with it, or coat metal corners the first time. So you might want to add a little woodglue if going over painted surfaces. Otherwise it will be fine. But all purpose regular or light weight would be another good choice as it has a lot of adhesion.
Can a graco dry texturing hopper be used to apply the joint compound instead of a roller on a big house? Thank you
never heard of a dry texturing hopper. but now trying to spray the mud on is actually slower than rolling it on
Thank you buddy, keep up the great work 👍🏼
Do all these tools work on plaster walls that have some texture due to multiple layers of paint?
Can we skim coat a metal door?
Thank you!
You can skim coat most anything that won't flex, or vibrate too much. I wouldn't try more than a very thin coat on a door. Thicker coats are more likely to crack and flake off. If you skim coat a glossy surface, sand it first with 60-80 grit to remove some of the gloss and give the mud something to bite into so it doesn't flake off.
I want to add a stomp texture to a mobile home with VOG walls. Any recommendations? Should I use a primer first for the mud to stick well? If so what type of primer. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
I have done a lot of mobile homes and I usually pull off all of the strips between the sheets and tape them and finish them like new drywall. But anyway you need to get a bonding primer like the Zinnsee Bullseye 123. Get the one that’s the best at sticking to things and then yes I would scuff sand the walls to put scratches in the walls for the primer to hold onto. Then texture over that. I still have reservations about it sticking really well but I think sort of banging into the walls a lot it should be fine. I’ve never heard of any issues with it after I completed one.

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY thank you so much for your fast
Respose.
My pleasure.
Wow literally just bought this thing from Sherwin this week!
Hope you like it!
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY I think I'll love it! Don't do much skimming mostly all new smooth drywall. I'm always looking to learn and improve
Honestly don't like it. I'm sure it wasn't the proper usage. I ended up usually a 14 stainless and a 18" skim. And it came out perfect. I'll post the link

Here's the video. I was following my electrician so idk why he made so many little cuts haha
I prefer metal but some like this better.
Does it matter what type of roller brush you use to apply the mud? Also, if we dilute the mud how much water per mud ratio should we use or what consistency are we looking for ?
The roller can be most anything. I prefer a 3/4" nap to get more mud on faster. As for a water ratio, I don't have one as I mix until it's where I want. Watch the video below, as it might help. But try about 2 cups per box or bucket of mud to start.

Can you recommend a good primer to use after skim cost dries and before paint? Doing a whole house (and ceilings)- so wanting to be reasonable on price but done right!
If going over raw drywall, a good PVA works. I prefer the one lowes sells. If going over painted surfaces, use a good bonding primer like Zinnser Bullseye 123.
Thanks!
Thank you. Guy
What is your opinion of skim coating a heavily textured plaster wall that is over 120 years old with drywall topping or should I utilize Plus 3? We just don't like the current texture of the wall. I'm certainly not an expert in finishing drywall; however, I have always used All Purpose Joint Compound for taping and then run the additional coats with Drywall Topping.
Well I'd sand it with very coarse sandpaper to give it lots of scratches, then use regular all purpose as it has more glue in it, or Plus 3 and add some wood glue. Definitely not topping as it has very little adhesive and they even say not to use it on the first coat of cornerbead for that reason.
Rocky Mountain as in Colorado? If so, what part? I'm in Grand Junction CO. Also, hope you subscribed and maybe can join my patreon or youtube membership to say thanks for saving you from using mud that would likely not stick well, lol. But either way, see you on the next video.
We have ceilings that are popcorn that someone had painted over. I’m going to try this! But I do have a question- what grit did you use to do the initial knock down of the high spots? Thank you!
I used 80 grit in this example, but you could go even closer if you want. Anywhere from 40 grit to 100 grit would work.
So does your handle mean you go barefoot often ? I ask because I do and I am barefoot in a number of videos. Some people think I’m nuts of course
I’m definitely barefoot most of the time, I guess it’s because I was raised by Deadheads.😂 I feel like I literally can’t breathe right when my feet are covered. My old man and I are floor contractors, and I do all the floor coating barefoot. Helps me make sure the floors are smooth!😂
Awesome. I find it funny how many people don't get how you become more aware of your foot safety when barefoot. I've been working barefoot most of the time for about 6 years now, and never more than a minor scrape on my feet. You don't become reliant on shoes to protect you. I get annoyed and yet laugh at all the people telling me to put some shoes on. Heck, most of my videos are shot in my shop/studio and it's very safe anyway. Thanks for replying. 👣👣👣 😎
Lol, thirteen seconds in and you hit the nail on the head.
Good music choices
For me, when side-lighting, I like to circle any area that I want to come back to with a coin
(a quarter, etc). Pencil or pen often bleed through.
Pen does bleed through for sure. I've never had a problem with pencil though. Marking the spots is a good idea though.
Can you use all purpose mud on trailer paneling ..and paint with success? Thanks
If you clean it first, and sand it, I have done it before and it seemed to stick fine. But because paneling is much more floppy, you may end up with more cracking later.
i have a repair that i did on my ceiling and i had used the can texture and it didnt go so well. i have since repaired all the other cracks and a knockdown sponge. the area where the bad patch is has paint on it already. i am going to sand it and refloat the ceiling in that area and may even skim coat it. should i use a primer over the painted surface before re-mudding?
If you sand it well and clean up the dust you can mud over it
I used this method but ended up with little fibers stuck (I think from the roller) in my dried mud that won’t sand off. Any tips? I’m thinking I’ll thin the mud out and try again.
Can't say really without seeing it.
Your suppose to wet & cleanthe roller before you ever use it, to get all that loose stuff off of it!
I've watched many of your videos and none of them show how to skim coat a narrow area. Doing just a plain wall is the easiest for anybody to do but what about the areas you can't get a roller or any other tool used??
I just use a knife that fits to run a coat on it without a roller

@@bdschm3475 sure I won't offended to anyone.. my apologize..
My walls need more than a little help the texturing is horrendous and very thick, do I use this technique to get closer to a smooth surface? I’m thinking it would be less labor intensive to knock the walls down and re drywall...#doitright
I would NOT remove the drywall. But a very sturdy floor scraper with a stiff scraping blade, scrape off the high points then do this- 🟢Smoothing Out A Wall by Skim Coating it - LEVEL 5 Hospital Smooth
We just scraped our popcorn ceilings. We have some gauges to fix then I’m wanting to skim coat. Do we need to prep the bare drywall before we skim coat? And do we HAVE to sand the skim coat?
All you have to do to prep the raw drywall is make sure it’s not real dusty. After you skim coat, if you don’t sand you will see lap marks everywhere. If you fix all the defects in the sheet rock, you don’t really have to skim coat. I’m going to do a video about that confusion real soon.
That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement thank you for your reply! We have so many gauges I think it will be better all around if we skim coat. Do you agree? When skim coating, we don’t need to go and mud every gauge individually do we? We’ll purchase a drywall sander. Hope us DIYers don’t screw it up any worse than we already have!
If there's gouges every foot or so, and they aren't deep, then yes, a skim coat will smooth them all out faster. Fill any deep ones first with fast setting joint compound. Coat any that have brown paper showing with RX-35 or Guardz first. (I had one that homeowners removed the popcorn on and it had brown paper showing every 12". Made them coat the whole ceiling twice with RX-35 and worked perfect. Then I skim coated). See this video for how to deal with the brown paper as there's prep you need to do before coating it- ua-cam.com/video/J7zSqZhBHJo/v-deo.html

That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement absolutely, thank you so much for your help. These videos are a godsend!
Is it difficult to clean the mud off the paint roller?
Takes a few minutes but not hard
Thank you so much ✨💖🙏✨
Question- What ugly texture are you trying to cover up? Or why do you want to learn how to skip trowel?
I’m trying to cover orange pee texture any videos?
I was removing wallpaper and it messed up the paint below it. There are paint chips everywhere and more flakes keep coming off. Is skim coating a good option to fix this?
I would remove all the loose paint you can, then apply Guardz or Pro 999, then after fully dry, skim coat it.
What do you figure would be the cost for someone to skim a 20x20 room 8ft ceiling, 2 coats?

I have the Sheetrock Plus3 premix. Should I add additional water?
Usually. You want it to roll but not be too drippy. Thicker is better unless it’s fighting you. Check out this video-ua-cam.com/video/wgqbQRJcZ8c/v-deo.html
lol good vid
do we need to add water to the joint compund so its easier to apply on the roller?
SlavicGirl BG keep it as thick as possible but add water if needed to be able to roll it better
Why would you sand it at all if your just going to texture it after?
Because nothing likes to stick to paint unless it’s been sanded to give it tooth
