The brainchild of a disturbed 19-year-old, Shock Therapy was created in 1984 by lead singer/guitarist/synthesist Gregory John McCormick a.k.a. Itchy together with guitarist E. Keith Jackson. After spending an influential period of his teenage years in the care of psychiatric institutions, Itchy channeled pent-up aggressions creatively in his early adult life to what became the most original, raw underground music group in existence. Critics and fans alike cannot argue- no band does what Shock Therapy does, has done in the studio, or on stage. But let’s go back to the year 1979, THE year, when Itchy, aka Gregory John McCormick founded a band called SHOCK THERAPY and started to mix up hardcore-guitars with synthetic sounds, to create very ludicrous songs. For a while, the band worked with changing line-up in the American underground, but in 1985 they had their breakthrough with the debut-album HATE IS A 4-LETTER WORD. Just after two weeks the first pressing was completely sold out and even in Europe, where bands like FRONT 242 started to make EBM known to the public, the band had many fans. And still today, three decades after, “Hate is a 4-Letter Word” is still one of those underground cult-songs, which are played in every independent-disco. The rest is history! But SHOCK THERAPY renounced on keeping the successful line. Itchy created uncomfortable songs with agitating lyrics and sick arrangements and their following albums saw them fading. Because being an absolute insider-cult-act, they couldn’t burn out, like so many wave-bands at the same time. And while the critics got more and more confused and helpless, while the band was caught in rumours about the misuse of drugs and insanity and while a mere cult around them was shaped, their style got mature. SHOCK THERAPY, the name stands for wonderful melodies and provocative lyrics always tighten one another. SHOCK THERAPY doesn’t frighten to desecrate their own songs by distuned guitar-riffs. Behind Itchy’s work, there’s more than just the wish to create. With literature readings, book-releases, graphics and painting, he gives us a complete view of his inner world: twisted, but not more than the normality of our sick society.

I still to this day do not understand why this band never made the big time. Never for get going down town Detroit and watching these guys when i was a teenager. My friend Jerry worked with the guitarist at koshes sandwich company in novi dam those dam good times.
The fact that the frontman was a suicidal sociopath could have had something to do with it...
This song came back to me in my sleep last night. First heard it on WORB 90.3 FM Farmington, Michigan radio in the Detroit suburbs in the 80s. It's a haunting song. Had to look it up again after I awoke.

Selbsthass kommt aus der Kindheit. Schau dir ganz genau an, wie deine Eltern mit dir umgegangen sind. Ein Kind übernimmt ungefragt, was die Eltern ihm vermitteln. Der Selbsthass kommt also nicht von dir selbst, sondern wurde dir eingeimpft. Deshalb kannst du ihn auch wieder abschütteln, wenn du dir Hilfe suchst.

I recall going to Shock Therapy/Itchy shows and looking for any CD that had that song on it. The original LP release (and tracks from it) were nowhere to be found. I got other CD's he had because I love the band, and Itchy is a trip... and fellow Detroiter. I heard there were Copyright issues and other stuff preventing it from being played.
I first heard Shock Therapy being played frequently on WIDR FM in Kalamazoo. I can swear that a song from that LP was played about every hour for a week in, what I think was, the Summer of '85. Of all the songs on it this one stood out. I still remember it almost 40 years later.... and here it is!!!

the band was so big in germany, but never in the north america. it's really strange that shock therapy is not mentioned by anyone when speaking about US/CAN electro/industrial music...
They had a large following in Seattle and I'm listening as I write. Mostly word of mouth and sharing CD. There is no better not worse than hate.
Well known in Detroit and famous in Kalamazoo in the 1980's. Since Detroit and Windsor, ON just ahave a river separating them, I bet some Windsorites were into him, back in the day.
They are, the original 3 Michigan Industrial bands were Zyklon, Shock Therapy, and Hunting Lodge.

I used to own this labum, I bought it when it came out in Detroit. I was stunned a few years later when, my first night in Ithaca NY, I turned the hotel TV to a local FM station and heard this song pouring out of the tv speaker. A classic Detroit band, one day they'll get the recognition they deserve.
I had all the albums back then. I still love the tracks today. Shock Therapy even influenced my own music a lot. Thanks guys. 🖤❤️🎶
