Very cool to see again. I was born in 1962 at memorial hospital in Long Beach. I still live here. It's amazing how much has changed in 60 years. I remember all these places. We sailed our little sabots in the bay around Naples island just like in this clip.

I remember going to Pier Point in the 60s' and 70s' They had advertised foot long hotdogs and mile high sundaes. The Pike was one of my favorite places to go as well. The double Ferris wheel, the Cyclone coaster and Rainbow Pier. In the late 70s', the place started to go to hell. I can barely remember POP. An amusement park on a pier. Knott's Berry farm was free to get into, and Disneyland sold tickets for the rides. The "E" ticket got you on the Matterhorn and the better rides. It is amazing how things have changed over the decades. Ah, the good old days.

My parents wouldn't let me go to PierPoint Landing or the Pike. Those were some sketchy areas in the 60s. Besides, I had plenty to keep me busy in Alamitos Bay. Owned a Sabot and a 17' Boston Whaler. Plenty of water in LB Marina to tool around on. I'd cruise Marine Stadium, LBYC, Chrisman's Landing, and ABYC on a typical Saturday.

@@vernwallen4246 I do believe that is the one that the car went up the middle of a large tube, then the car went down in a spiral to the bottom. However, I am not sure. I liked what I called the bird cages. While one was down, the other was way up high. A great view from that one. I also enjoyed the spinning lights around the parking lot. I can also remember the indoor swimming pool.

@@briane173 So your parents would't let you go, yet you had a boat? I also enjoyed going to Catalina in one of the Grumman Gooses. Or would a bunch of them be called Grumman Geese?

There was no better place to be than Southern California in the 1960s. Thank you for this.

I was about the same age as that child in the ‘60’s. My grandparents would take me to the landing to feed those harbor seals just like he did. Good times!

I remember riding the double-decker London busses to a Pier Point with my great-grandmother in the late 60s.
I also remember exploring The Pike as a teen before it was demolished in 1979.
My grandfather owned The Leilani Hut (where Legends is today on 2nd street in Belmont Shore) and was the man who built a floated the first electric Christmas tree in the lagoon in the 1940s which remain a tradition to this day.

My friend, thanks for posting this clip. That kid could have been me, only I was at Pierpoint Landing in the 50's a lot since my dad launched his fishing boat from there. A lot of memories from this clip. Thank you.

If you would like to really see the old Pierpoint Landing, you should check out the half hour film on DVD that I did. A lot of additional footage of the shops and restaurants - interviews with some of the old boat captains, stories from fishermen, and others who visited Pierpoint in the old days.

The interviews were done in the 90's. The film is about the whole Pierpoint experience - The shops, the Restaurants, the Seal Pool, the fish market, etc. Only about half of the film is about fishing.

This looks more like the 1950's. My mom & several friends use to go out deep sea fishing & you should have seen the looks the guys gave them when they boarded. Later they had a good laugh at how well the ladies fished. We had Fish Frys for the whole church at the park off PCH in San Pedro. Thanks for the memories!

In 1984 the LA Olympic Games sailing events where held in the same spot that kid was sailing. Well at least part of them. The rest were out beyond the breakwater. Several scenes included the Pike, or at that time it was the Nu-Pike. Wonderful place for a kid during the daytime. It got a little dangerous after dark especially down to the far West end near Chestnut. I think it was called the Jungle and fights, robbery, knifing and such were pretty common. The Pike had a special detail of police that worked that area. They would walk down the street twirling their nightsticks from leather cords. Great theater during the day but those nightsticks got put to use after dark. Word among kids back then was you didn't mess with the Pike cops.

I lived in Belmont Shore as a kid in the 60s, and one thing my parents wouldn't allow was for me to go to the Pike at night -- or at any time, for that matter. Its proximity to Naval Station LB made the Pike a mecca for drunken brawls, prostitution, and drug dealing -- mostly among the sailors and the yard workers. Only place I got to go was the base movie theater. Most of my free time was spent at the LB marina sailing my Sabot or motoring my Boston Whaler around Alamitos Bay. When I did venture out of the breakwater and into LB Harbor it was as a volunteer chase boat for LBYC during the Congressional Cup match series. So I was a little amazed to see this kid in his little Sabot sailing up to Pierpoint Landing and the Pike. That just didn't happen when I was a kid.

Sir, in this Pierpoint DVD...are the interviews with the old boat captains taken with their reflections in retrospect, or were the interviews actually in the old days (50's?). My dad was one of those captains and if there are old clips of him I'd sure like to see the DVD. Where can I purchase it?

Wish nu pike was still here. Really bad decisions have been made around the waterfront area in the past. Long beach almost had Disney here. But Anaheim got it.
