Before Go-Pro technolgy, I strapped my Minolta Super 8 movie camera to my bike and went for a ride through Huntington Beach. It was the summer of 1970. -Gary Winn
I lived w my parents house in Canoga Park going to school and shortly after high school got a girlfriend in Huntington Beach by the college and I would commute that every day and I felt so safe and belong welcomed. So Cal no longer feels safe or welcoming to me .....
these are the dreams that will roll through my mind when im to old and cant move anymore I'll slip away back to youth and better times. thank you for saving time for everyone.
It looked so empty and that's the way I remember it! It was just fun to be there, you didn't have to pay to park your car and it was so much simpler. Loved Huntington Beach; we would cut school and just drive down there from Whittier and spend the afternoon. It was our beach! Lots of memories of HB. (from Sandi)
Thank you for this trip down memory lane!! I remember THIS Huntington Beach...no nonsense...no rallies, no riots. Just our little community, making the most of our beaches, Main Street, Pier (although it was rebuilt twice), friends, nachos, surfing/body boarding, Jack's!!! This is when it was OUR TOWN, and we don't want it to change!!! Missing the days of old in Surf City.
This is so cool! I had always wondered what my city was like back then. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Lordy how many of those cars I said “Hey I had one of those!” Makes me wonder what I’m taking for granted today, that I will miss nostalgically in 3-4 decades. Live in the moment people.
I was born there in 1970, and the first shot where the camera drops into the bike path is near 14th street where we lived. THere were oil rigs all over the place and scraping tar balls off our feet after going to the beach was a normal day at the beach. I will never forget the smell, and it actually smelled good, I though at the time. Thanks for this.
OMG thank you so much for posting!! 01:45 the old Huntington Beach Inn!! THis brought back so many memories. thank you thank you thank you! I still live in the area and still love HB but this made my heart jump. If I could give you a big hug for posting this I would!!
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!! This was OUR Huntington !! Just sand, "strips" , baby oil tan's, string bikini's, a board and a ride to it on your bike. How I miss those days. Living on Brookhurst and Adams Blvd. Going to EDISON high school and in love with my darling husband. ( Still married after 41 years ! ) All this just a couple of miles away on my bike after school. Thanks for the memories !!
So cool! Thanks for sharing! I loved this. That was the year I was born, but it still took me back to growing up in SoCal in the 70s. Oil derricks right off of the beach path!
amazing vid, moved here in 78-lots of those old oil rigs were everywhere still, used to ride down a lot then-really cool to see this. Still here-grand daughter will grow up here as well.
Makes me really anxious,I have the best memories of my there, after vietnam I bought a condo on 19th,state of the art,it was 225.00 a month I could see the water from my little balcony, then things started changing, was the best place on earth.
Can't let the working man have it too good. The uppermiddleclass invited their classmates from around the world to come and keep the working class down.
So cool thanks for posting! I live in NJ now but my roots are spread out everywhere in this video and will always be there.. Love all the vinty VW's too
Jack's Surfboards where I got my first surfboard in 1965. I ate at that Jack in the Box many times, tacos 25 cents, still remember how they tasted, not great. I remember Chuck Dent Surfboards.
Oh Jesus, how wonderful this video is. I was there so often, especially 67-70. On big days, the guys and I would tackle the outside break, the come out of the water and watch the skinny girls in bikinis. Just beautiful. Thank you!!!
@05EVORS It was a different kind of Mexico around 1971.. like the simple lifestyle of the central valley. In front of Slater's house on Gothard was I believed a bean field. Farm workers would rest by the house.. Now, it's Ocean View High School.
If I'm not incorrect, this ends with them pulling up to an apartment building near Dwyer. If so, I knew a dude who used to live in that upstairs apartment.
Lived in long beach California 1975 I think. Hospital navy base. I miss those times. Can't remember the school I went to. I feel bad and sad that I can't. I can remember some of the friend s names. I feel sad.
Used to live on Dolphin Drive across from Newland Elementary, now back in Germany. (oh it's sunny here as well but it ain't California).. Thanks so much for the wonderful pictures (love the part on Main St where Jack's is located now). PS: What music is it?
Video cameras in 1970 were large compared to today and had to be held when filming. Probably tough to do while riding a bike. Oil well on the beach at :51.
I don't know 1970 seems like Huntington Beach had lot of cops..I'm sure people brought ice chest full of beer n groceries. The liquor store was probably walking distance, coming back with open container while crossing the street. If you didn't gossip inapprehensable additude profile an image of hash, poppers acid would certainly like to disspel. Nothing business just personal severe beating incarcerated, moved to big house maximum sentence. 1970 crust is way before my time, I was born in 66 so I never appreciated oldies until later.. Although Huntington Beach was probably a lil more hip then fresrag ca. Fresno sure. Fresrag in1970 was Mayberry.
I really miss the days when Southern California wasn't so trendy and stuck up. Great video :)

Thanks for sharing this video. You don't realize how much you miss something until it's gone. HB was a great place to grow up.

So glad I got to do this back then. Loved growing up within a bike ride from here.
I was there. This was my time. So much has changed in Hintington Beach. We had a simpler time. Thanks for the video.
Lordy how many of those cars I said “Hey I had one of those!” Makes me wonder what I’m taking for granted today, that I will miss nostalgically in 3-4 decades. Live in the moment people.

What a great time capsule. I was in 4th grade at Smith School on 17th Street in 1970. HB was such a great place to grow up in those days.
My hometown HB YAY! I grew up in that era

Jack's Surfboards where I got my first surfboard in 1965. I ate at that Jack in the Box many times, tacos 25 cents, still remember how they tasted, not great. I remember Chuck Dent Surfboards.
I miss when my city was a quiet little beach town :(
What a great video to watch. You were way ahead of your time!
At 2:33 I think was where Wimpy's was and one of the last residential holdouts on PCH. Just great stuff!!!
Wimpy burgers, real potato fries, and real milk shakes of so many flavors.
This is amazing what you shared here. A million thank yous
What I would do to rewind The times and start over!

Thank you for the memories, I was there Mesa View and HBHS, the beach at the pier was my play ground.
I graduated from Huntington Beach in 1971..
Met Mrs Slater on Gothard St.
Slater Street is named after her family.
...now its the Slater Slums with half of mexico living behind it!
@05EVORS

I made this same ride about a thousand times, from 1967 to 1972...
Way back before gentrification and tourism. Born in 72.
Wow. Way back in the good old days. Very cool. I was in high school there and then.
Golden West?
Bro it’s like a 1970s GoPro POV 💀💀💀how was dude riding and recording in 1970??
Jacks Surfboards on Main at PCH. Still there, definitely not the same... Guess nothing else is though, either.
A truly better time
Thanks !! I was 6 right then and living in Pacific Sands. Funny, if you look to the beachside not much has changed

I was 21 and just got my first apt on 16th st. Seems like yesterday.
I remember a horse stables and a mini golf course 2 feet away.
Lived in long beach California 1975 I think. Hospital navy base. I miss those times. Can't remember the school I went to. I feel bad and sad that I can't. I can remember some of the friend s names. I feel sad.

1:23 ok. what was the name of the restaurant at the beginning of the pier. I know it's Duke's now.
I believe it was Maxwell's. I never ate there but I remember it being one of those restaurants you only went to for special occasions.

Look at all those big beautiful American cars. Todays cars look like POS!
