Wow... what a difference from today. Girls actually wore clothes during the 50's and looked like nice young women. Men wore suits and nice clothes and no one had their pants to their knees with underwear showing each having respect for one another . If there was a time machine I would gladly go back to this time . Being born much later in life I would have loved to have lived in a simple safer America. The city was actually clean nice car and no congestion.
I'm a hugh fan of the 50's era though I know it wasn't perfect. I love the tri-5 Chevy Bel Aires!
I also love seeing the ladies in dresses and skirts. Women and girls NEED to wear them all the time. I do!!! Not a short skirt but just like the ones you see on here. Not only does it remind you to be a virtuous woman but even men definitely look at you differently. There is more respect and it brings out the gentleman in them.
Nothing wrong in being a woman who believes in putting God first, being a good wife, mother and taking care of the family. Just like in the 50's. If we want to have change ...we must be the change. Pray everyday ...return to our Father and eventually life will return externally too. Like the "good ol' days". Peace be with you and in you. 🌹

Beautiful 'technicolor' footage of an era we'll never see a again. I wasn't born until 1960, and always felt I was born about 10-15 years too late. Would've loved to have enjoyed the simpler life of this period in the early fifties. Tugs at my heart alright!
Thing is, some of those people were probably nostalgic for the '30s.
Look how clean everything was. People were happy. People had extra cash in their pockets. No one staring at their phones.

One thing that stands out in this video, no one is walking around like a mindless zombie in their pajama pants and sandals and there aren't any extremely fat people , they probably didn't waste as much time binge watching Netflix or playing video games.

I believe it was part of Roosevelt's Big or Great Deal (don't quote me, I'm no historian and studied enough to pass). And most of those families were NOT African Americans, yet the stigma has been attached to them/us for some reason. 🤔🤨
Always get a kick out of how new everything looked in these old films, the roads were new, the houses were new, the curbs and sidewalks, the street signs, etc. Also reminded me of the haze we used to have up until the late seventies or so, that’s what a sunny day with air pollution used to look like, things would disappear in the distance. The people who aren’t old enough to remember it wouldn’t think of it. Leaded gas, baybee - used to smell the exhaust at every stoplight. Part of life back then. At least the cars were hot! And you could take a girl out for a dollar and she wouldn’t think you were cheap! 😁 And you didn’t have to talk about your latest tattoo, either! Could do fun stuff, things that didn’t hurt you or get you in trouble or warp your perspective. People were confident in who they were naturally.

Those dress codes were quite amazing. Today’s are blatant and twisted, Prices of a meal, by today’s standard, spoke to me of a more simple way of life, with greed not getting in the way.
Seems when that shiny and pristine atmosphere disappeared overnight, its mentality also went with it.

My uncle bought that mascot from an old man many years ago, he has had it in his play room ever since, it looks small perched atop the "Beany's" sign but it is well over seven feet tall.
PCH at Ximino st . Old Circle drive in theater across street, heard about this drive in restaurant from my uncle who used to go there. What a big change from what it looks like today. I miss those simple days

Beany's lasted till around 1962. It's name sake was a popular LA produced puppet TV show. When TV show faded so did the restaurant. Its now a Burger King. The Circle Drive-in Theater was replaced by office buildings in 1980. And the Clock restaurant across the street is now a Carl's Jr.

If you are talking about Burger King and Carl's Jr., then this must be on the corner of present day Ximeno and PCH or Bellflower and Spring.
At 4:40, it shows the menu. It has a “Cecil” Sundae! Are you sure it was a puppet TV show? I remember an animated series called Beanie and Cecil.

Everything is great through the lens of the past. I used to go to Wilson High School just down the road from the Circle Drive-in back in the late 80's. In eight grade, I sat in a eucalyptus tree looking over the wall and watched Thief of Hearts at that drive in. I had a couple of girlfriends in that area off of PCH. I had a friend who lived a couple doors up from Tommy's Burger on Ximeno and Anaheim, and he would take take us out on his boat at the Marina Stadium where I learned to water ski. The 50's looked nice, but the 80's was pretty nice as well. I'm sure 30 years from now someone will say how great it was in 2023.

Simple things like a weekend drive, stopping for a burger and coke brought us joy. I'm so thankful I got to enjoy a few of those years before the 60's came along and people went crazy.
I remember Beany's. It was on the corner of Ximeno Avenue and PCH in Long Beach, CA, right across the street from the Circle Drive-in Theater. Saw Old Yeller there in 1957. This restaurant mirrors the "IN-N'OUT restaurant that started in 1947.

Thanks for posting this video. I only recently came across it while viewing on another site. I'm a long time Long Beach resident and this was all new to me! Beany and Cecil was one of my favorite cartoons as a child. This really brings back memories.
mrsndmn69 The restaurant pre-dated the cartoon show. It was established when Time for Beany was a puppet show. I think Beany and "Dishonest John", the bad guy, were marionettes and I'm positive Cecil was a sock puppet. One of my earliest childhood memories.
My sister and I were so young, we pronounced it "Cease and Beany".

You are correct about the restaurant pre-dating the cartoon show and about the restaurant being built when Time for Beany was a puppet show. There were, however, no marionettes on Time for Beany; all the characters were sock puppets.
I found a huge ad for the Grand Opening of Beany's in Long Beach in the October 23, 1952 Long Beach Press Telegram. I've typed the main parts of the ad below. The ad also shows a drawing of the Beany's sign, with a note saying "Copyright - Bob Clampett," who was the creator of Beany and Cecil. Included in this drawing is an inset that says "Tune in on Bob Clampett's "TIME for BEANY" Mon. thru Fri. 6:30 P. M. KTLA --Channel 5". The ad also includes the same menu that is shown in the video with the same prices, including "Cecil Sundaes". Also on this page is an ad for the program for the Circle Drive-In Theater which shows the same movies playing that weekend as is shown on the sign in the video, so I know that this is when this video was taken. I've looked at photos of Bob Clampett (who also created Porky Pig) and he doesn't appear to be one of the men in the video.

Don't remeber Beany's but I remember Circle Drive -In. Was at the swap meet every weekend. My grandma would buy me handmade Barbie clothes every Sunday. Born in 62' Raised on 28th & Baltic.

The cars and the dresses are nice but what I like are the prices and the lack of government indications such as the woman popping a good golden fry into her mouth without wearing gloves, just on a relaxed evening.....
People wearing suits, dresses and kids in slacks, and no booty shorts, skimpy tanks or pants hanging down around their butts..what a breath of fresh air! It seems that people took more better pride in themselves, than they do today!
About the same time 52-53, 60 miles east in San Bernadino CA the legendary McDonald Brothers Mac and Dick, had perfected their Speedee Service System and had their hamburger stand running on all 8 cylinders, about one year later, Ray Kroc met them, and as they say the rest is history!

I never got to live in these times or anywhere near, but I have a piece of these times with me, my '56 Chevy truck. She's as stock and correct as they come, i restored her with my dad. Some people treat classic cars as "Cool hot rods" and through modern components and engines at them, and each to his own, but for me, a classic car is also a time machine, So I like to restore them to how they used to be, and I'm very particular about the correctness. Even just this week I got a 1963 Mercury driving again after almost 15 years of sitting. When you get truly stock car out in the country away from everything, even without any modern cars on the road, you can just about convince yourself you have gone back in time.
I lived close to the beany's in South Gate it was on corner of Firestone and Otis . across from the jr high school. later it became lucky boys a hang out in high school and beyond. dbl cheese burger with mayo and pickles frys with guacamole sauce

I've been looking for verification of the existence of this restaurant, which I remember from my childhood. (I"ll be turning 66 y/o next month.) We lived in Orange County, (Garden Grove), and I remember the building from our occasional drives to visit a friend of my mom's. In those pre-freeway days, it was quite a drive. THANKS!

It was indeed on the corner of PCH and Ximeno Ave. I remember when this Beany's was being built in what was up to then a horse pasture. Our family lived in Belmont Shore and we saw many a movie at the Circle Drive-In across the street from Beany's. Even though I was a child of 7 or 8 years old, and faithfully watched the Beany and Cecil Show, I remember being sad when the horse pasture disappeared under all that asphalt.

People of various ethnic backgrounds became more visible in the eastern area of Long Beach beginning in the mid-'60s, after landlords, banks, and real estate companies began being prosecuted under the newly enacted fair housing and civil rights laws. These laws were effective in addressing the restrictive covenants, red-lining, and other discriminatory housing and lending practices, thereby making the area's housing stock available to a more diverse population.

of housing, I'm afraid that you've been misinformed. While it is true that segregation in housing remains, these days it is due primarily to economic status and not because of race, color, creed, religion,
national origin, or gender. In the Belmont Shore section of Long Beach, for example, up until the mid-1960s residents there were exclusively white. After the passage of fair housing laws, that began to change. These days people of color, those who can afford an expensive segment of the housing market, are a common sight among those living in Belmont Shore. Does discrimination in violation of the law continue to take place? Yes, but on a much, much smaller scale and when encountered, the home seeker now has access to powerful tools to attain legal redress.

I remember riding through PCH as a kid on the bus when I would go home from school. Ximeno was one of the streets I used to see. Funny, the only difference I see is that there seem to be less houses, and PCH used to have utility poles, which I didn't know.

Never heard of Beany’s. I grew up in the LBC late ‘70s ha. Looks like an early In N Out ha!! Drive-thru ordering was just catching on then. 3:37 Circle Drive-In vaguely remember that! Traffic circle is still there PCH / Lakewood Blvd / Los Coyotes Diagonal Road. On the south side of Signal Hill. So very close to Long Beach airport and the huge McDonnell Douglas plant that was part of the Cold War effort against the damn Russians. Huge suburbs built out there during this time. Veterans learned engineering with the GI Bill. Union workers very middle class. So ya this is legit Americana all the way. And I had never heard of Beanys before ha.

The prices for burgers and fries, 20 cents adjusted for inflation in today's 2019 dollars is $1.93. The most expensive item on the menu was the shrimp for 50 cents - $4.82 in today's dollars.
I wish I had one of those cars now...any one of them would do. It was a much less stressful time to be alive. Life was simple, uncomplicated, everyone content to live by the rules...everything worked and we understood who and what we were. Life was constant and predictable. All boring by today's standards, yet in a way, happier.

I remember a comedian on with Carson in the early or mid-1970's, who said, "you want to know what the 1950's was really like? The 1950's was just a lonely guy, standing on a street corner, waiting for the 1960's.
I imagine his statement was a reaction to, either the recently released "American Graffiti", or the "Happy Days" depiction of those times. We always tend to over-romanticize a particular era by about 20 years later.

This was the nicer side of long beach. However back then a huge part of inland long beach and the So Cal coastline was covered with grasshopper fields (oil derricks) which ruined the view. Remember signal hill in the 70's? Biggest eyesore ever.
1:39. I don't know where that is,but it's not Long Beach. Those hills in the background at the 1:39 mark are not Signal Hill,not Palos Verdes,not the Whittier Hills or the San Gabriel Mountains.
