      I don't really know what warrants the "I don't care what you say" here, as I was largely positive with this review - acknowledging that there'll be a polarising response from different kinds of viewers.

    The A.I. seems to be smoothing out the entire picture and then adding sharpness with simulated textures. So you're no longer looking at what actually photographed, but a computer rendered interpretation of it.
    I wouldn't mind these replicant versions existing as an option, as long as the truly lensed film negative originals were also featured in their most prestine representation too.

      This year is the 40th anniversary of The Terminator so they have talked with Cameron about doing that and T2 on 4K this year. The old 4K of T2 was pretty bad and needs to be redone.

      @bened22 2 місяці тому +1

      I disagree. Cameron might want to run T2 trough the newest version of the AI upscaler. While I personally cringe at the idea I also think the results could be better than what we have now.

    • @benpascall4297
      @benpascall4297 2 місяці тому +1

      @@DaveLeeDownUnderI believe you’re wrong here on T2. Here’s why:
      - the scan used to produce the existing T2 4k disc is the one that was done for the 3D version of the movie. The 4k is a bi-product/afterthought.
      - the very fact it’s strongly mooted in more than one source that he’s redoing T2 (alongside a new 4k for the original Terminator) suggests that he recognises the existing release is sub-par.
      - the existing T2 disc has heavy DNR done using the traditional DNR techniques that we have seen with some of the Paramount releases. As well as removing grain it also removes detail such as facial detail, leaving the notorious waxy look. The AI technique Cameron is using now removes the film grain, but retains the facial detail etc which would have been scrubbed out with conventional DNR (as with T2).
      - Avatar 1 & 2 received rereleases within the first year or the original 4k discs coming out, so it’s not setting a precedent for a Cameron disc to be rereleased.
      - He will want consistency with the look of his whole catalogue on 4k physical media, hence the redo of T2.

    Wanting to clean your films up is fine. But there is no need to make them look "modern" whatever that means. All film is a product of it's time. That's part of their appeal and frankly a lot of older films look better than movies now. There's no need to pull a Lucas and constantly tamper with what was done. Again I'm glad The Abyss is finally out let's have some respect for the art of filmmaking.

    • @benpascall4297
      @benpascall4297 2 місяці тому +2

      To be fair, these films are Cameron’s babies and he has enough credibility to be given free rein to redo them in any way he sees fit.
      Aliens for example, it’s documented that Cameron was never happy with the heavy grain with that movie, so he’s revisiting this (and the others) to present them in a way that he would have done had the same technology been around back then.
      We talk about respect to film, but they’re his films, so whilst we all will have our opinions, shouldn’t we also respect him as the man behind these movies in the first place?

    • @svabosvabo3257
      @svabosvabo3257 2 місяці тому +3

      @@benpascall4297 I disagree, film preservation is a thing directors (even Lucas and Cameron!) need to respect. These films represent a certain time and the film stock limitations are a part of that. In my mind, the goal should be to best represent the source material and not add new stuff or eradicate any shortcomings the director sees after 30+ years.
      All they'd have to do is enable people to access archival copies in the best quality possible. They could charge an arm and a leg for this. Then they can go and redo all their stuff and make it look like a wax cabinet, release this stuff as well and people would also pay for this.
      But I guess with Cameron and Lucas it is also an ego thing, we will never get this. And, in the end, contractually, they have final say in those things.
      Sorry for the rant. ;D

    • @benpascall4297
      @benpascall4297 2 місяці тому +2

      @@svabosvabo3257 I think what’s going on a lot is that people are mixing DNR that we know and hate with this AI technique that Cameron is using and then throwing in the word wax for effect. The two technologies work very differently and whilst digital noise reduction is the commonality, that’s where it ends. The AI technique implemented here reduces grain to present a shot digitally look, but retains the detail, hence not the waxiness we saw on the old T2 release.
      I am a big fan of film grain and every time I see someone new to 4k complain about a grainy picture, I roll my eyes. Occasionally I’ll reply to these people to tell them that film grain is a natural part of film… you know the line.
      That aside, I read the controversy about Titanic and picked up my own 4k copy. I was blown away by it.
      Whilst I’ll withhold judgement on here releases until I have the disc in hand, I’m reading very positive reviews saying much the same about Aliens and The Abyss (not so much True Lies).
      I’m really not sensitive to grain… I love a good 16mm print of Texas Chainsaw Massacre… to me it’s a thing of beauty. The Blu ray of Aliens I always thought looked great. But Cameron in in his head never did like the overly grainy look and had a vision of how he wanted each of his movies to look.
      Take Aliens for example… He was really frustrated with the amount of grain the image had - which was FAR more than Scott’s Alien from 7 years earlier.
      It was a new film stock that Kodak had put out at the time that was shortly after taken off the market.
      I understand that some fans don't want to see the film altered at all, but at the same time every director is his or her own person and Cameron clearly can’t let go of wanting to fulfil his original artistic intent.
      But then again we also live in a world where Gareth Evans just did a complete colour regrade and a 4k upscale on his film The Raid which wasnt shot in 4k and wasnt graded to those colours because he couldnt afford to do what he wanted 15 years ago.... and fans seem to love it.

    • @svabosvabo3257
      @svabosvabo3257 2 місяці тому

      Yes, you are probably right that these new AI techniques look quite different from bad DNR. I will not dispute that until I have actually seen one of these new discs in person.
      But that wasn't my point. What I meant to say was that while Cameron has every right to alter his work, I do not respect it. Does not matter to me if it is AI or straight DNR.
      So, yeah, I am one of those... 😂
      But I can always stick with the BluRay and wait for fan restorations, while others can enjoy these new releases.
      Thanks for that tidbit about The Raid, did not know that. Of course, I will avoid that release now too lol.

    • @benpascall4297
      @benpascall4297 2 місяці тому +2

      @@svabosvabo3257 you really shouldn’t avoid The Raid. It’s not had any sort of DNR applied, traditional or AI. It’s a budget movie that was shot with serious limitations in reflection of that, where the original director has been able to recolour the movie. It’s very natural looking, grainy and has an organic look.
      Back to the Cameron AI restorations. As mentioned above, I DO have one of them in Titanic and judging it for what it is, it’s stunning. I suppose it’s a bit more easy to swallow for some with Titanic being more of an SFX movie, with the CGI etc. the AI process actually helps to pull it all together. It really is a stunning disc. I was very surprised and as a grain lover and a hater of the traditional waxy DNR, it really surprised me how good the movie looked. It’s very much an alternative take that Cameron is adopting, but I think it’s like watching these movies for the first time again in a way… I normally sell my old Blu ray copies on eBay when I upgrade to 4k, but I’ll be keeping onto my Aliens box set and will take comfort in the fact that I also have a decent 1080p grainy copy of Aliens, should the mood take me.
