I own these films on DVD and blu-ray and despite the bad transfers to 4K, I never would have bought them anyway. I refuse to triple dip on any 4K releases that I already own on another format BUT that's just me.
I'm incredibly relieved that I stumbled upon this video before making a foolish investment in the movies. This video brought back memories of a certain movie experience I had with the 2010 Ultimate Hunter Edition Predator movie. It's absolutely abhorrent how the filmmakers excessively employed DNR (digital noise reduction) in that particular edition, to the point where it rendered the movie unwatchable. I am immensely grateful to you for sharing this valuable information in the video, as it prevented me from wasting my hard-earned money on a potentially frustrating and disappointing movie experience. Looks like i'm holding on to my DVDs.
This is why it's important to save your DVDs and Blu-Rays of your favorite films because some Directors like to mess up the original films by adding crap... just ask George Lucas.
Great job ranting on this whole debacle. True Lies is the worst of the three 4Ks. Aliens has issues too but The Abyss from what I have seen looks great. And I am still looking forward to that one despite all of the tweaking. Because just by the screenshots it looks solid. But all of that being said Cameron is still a moron when it comes to how a film should look on physical media.

Perhaps the 1080p bluray that accompanies the 4k bluray will be less egregious due to the lower res and SDR. With that said, it is a shame. I'm glad I ordered a copy of the Spanish bluray. Regular 1080p bluray is proving to be the better format in many instances over UHD. I kind of miss watching dvds on a crt, every title looked great on those tvs. Simpler times.
The DNR isn't that bad. If it bothers you, the Spanish Blu-ray is really good imo. It is based on an earlier transfer done in 2011, even has English DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio on it. The Abyss I am definitely getting because there is no other Blu-ray version available.
Im glad i already own the Aliens movies and the first 2 Terminator movies on Disc. It's getting to a point where instead of being excited for a new release, you're dreading what they possibly did to the original image.
Perhaps, this whole thing is just a trick to cause more attention to the story, prepare the ground for a legit remaster and then re-release the films in 4-5 years time without so much DNR. 🤠 To make some more money for another 10-20 Avatars, each 5 hrs. long 😵😂😂😂
I'm not sure which is worse, but at least the ultimate hunter edition had more of a reason to be bad compared to the True Lies 4k as it was a somewhat early blu-ray. Since this is a brand new 4k, you expect it to be better, not just as bad.
As a fan of *Titanic* and *Avatar* myself (I yet to see the sequel), to each their own, Jimmy Cammy has gone off the deep fucking end. If he wants to shoot shit on fucking digital, fine, I don't give a fuck and I mean it. But for fuck's sake, removing film grain from films is not the way to go. If a movie is shot on film, then film grain should remain intact. Not the other way around. I mean, DNR may have been applied on the regular blu ray of Aliens, but at least the grain is still there, even if characters look a tad waxy. Unfortunately, Jimmy now blatantly seems to want to get rid of *all* grain as much as fucking possible. Say what you will about Michael Mann, but at least that wasn't the case when he supervised *Thief* on Blu-ray even though he now shoots on digital. In other words, I used to like James Cameron, but not any fucking more.
I think there's something that must be underlined here. DNR like this one is obviously bad, everyone can see it, but AI can be much more insidious than this: some people are praising the UHD Aliens release, because AI is literally inventing detail where simply there wasn't (startin' from an old 2k scan, by the way, instead of preserving detail from a new 4k scan of the original negative). I don't care if AI does a good or a bad job, it might even look nice, but it's a fake, it's forgery: the original theater experience is lost. You could argue that in theaters we never saw pristine copies straight from the negative, they were mostly copies of copies from an interpositive and they had dust and scratches, but if we can't have a proper restoration, I'll take that flawed 35mm look any time of the day.
We can't get blu-ray's of The Abyss or True Lies, but get 4k's with shitty CGI effects on Arnold's face? All James Cameron cares about nowadays is using his overabundance of CGI for his projects. He himself has become a robot.
I watched "True Lies" yesterday and besides the fact, that you now can clearly see Arnies stunt double in many scenes ;), it was a great experience. The movie never looked better. Can't wait for "The Terminator" UHD...

If anyone wants a great Aliens 4 k , Alien the OG is the one to get, I was very happy with it. Great stuff as usual Matt, hope you have a wonderful Christmas. All the best in the New Year. The Terminator 1984 is my only Jimmy movie . I prefer film over digital, yes 4k is nice but I do not like CGi over practical. Keep your physical media because many of our fav movies are changed and deleted forever , I have original versions of Star Wars , Empire , ROTJ on VHS, you will never find those versions again , they have been changed forever.
Current AI generated changes are ugly monstrosities. Oh, Jimmy! No. Leave your old films alone. Do videogames, instead. Wow!!! I had heard Cameron was putting these movies out on 4K but didn’t know that they would look like flat, textureless uncanny valley B.S!!! Jim Cameron should just let 3rd party film restorers do this stuff for him.
They already are - there's a 4K UHD Custom regrade of Aliens here on UA-cam that's already leagues better than the 2010 release. That was done, for free, by a single editor, and it still retains a large part of the grain and makes the film look like brand-new while still keeping the spirit of the original film stock. The fact that Cameron waited nearly 30 years to get True Lies on disc, then opted to run through AI algorithms and push it out to disc and call it to day (saying nothing about the tie-in to a middling TV adaptation) should be seen as a slap in the face to the fans of that film.
I got tired of waiting for True Lies, Strange Days, and the Abyss in the US. I got the Region 2 blu rays along with a region free blu ray player and life is good. JCammy needs to retire to Pandora and be done.

Cameron should be credited more so as an editor for that film than a director in the sense that he broke into the producer's studio and made a bunch of editing changes to the film that the producer never caught onto... get your facts straight. Maybe I am having second thoughts about buying this release even for just the Blu-ray. Hell, the releases of also "The Abyss" and "Aliens" as well. "True Lies" had a good HD transfer when I saw it on Hulu, but it only lasts so long on there. I also remembered thinking "The Abyss" has a good HD transfer when I watched it on HBO Go a few years ago. Maybe I am better off tracking down unofficial releases.
The one that you saw earlier is a previous transfer done by Lowry Digital around 2011. There is a Spanish bootleg Blu-ray based on that transfer that looks a lot better. The same thing with the Abyss. Both movies were finished around 2011, and those are the masters all the streaming channels had until now when Cameron tweaked them more.
Alrernate opinion from a long time fan who also loves Cameron's new work. If you liked the Terminator 2 UHD, you will love this too. Grain has been an anesthetic choice even on film for a long time now. Chemical processing for film has gotten so good grain has been non-existent unless you ask to keep it for years. I prefer the clean look myself and this is in line with that. The 4K remaster looks awesome and I don't see any signs of AI upscaling that everyone is crying about. The film looks better than ever and is a great way to experience it again or for the first time.
I generally HATE digital. That is one of my biggest issues with modern cinema. Shot on film will always look better and far superior to digital, because it looks NATURAL. It looks genuine. Same reason why I'm a fan of exploitation films, because they have an authenticity to them. "If your watching a film. Well this moment sticks out and this moment sticks out and that movement sticks out. THEN YOUR NOT 100% invested in the film!" Exactly. Which is why I generally prefer to avoid Bluray, except for a few films like Cobra, which i just watched for the 35th time or what ever number it is,lol. But a film like Scream 5, Scream 6, and Terrifer 2. The color grading, color palette, just the entire look of those films bothers me, Terrifier 2 to an obscene degree. It was so brightly lit, so bluish tinted, so WASHED OUT I couldn't stand to even look at the screen. "Grain is detail" Exactly. And I honestly have not seen any of the Star wars movies since at least....2005? I remember watching Attack of the Clones and I was like "Screw Star wars!!!!" Those two movies Episode 1 and 2 left a permanent bad taste in my mouth for decades and then I'd see "New release George Lucas edition" with the original films practically gone. My oldest brother realizing I hadn't seen The Mandalorian practically had to force me to sit down and watch the first episode with him and I was like "Damn...this is REALLY REALLY good. That baby Yoda is adorable!" and I've been thinking "I should really give the original films a rewatch." As well as E.T....but I know E.T has the weapons edited and replaced with Walkie talkies, and I am skeptical as to getting the original Star wars versions....and ya, sorry but I want the ORIGINAL F**KING FILM. PERIOD. Since last year, I've got really into 1920's silent films, and when it's clearly a modern soundtrack, I will look for the original online, because I want the ORIGINAL soundtrack that everyone heard back in the 1920's, and in cases where that isn't possible, fine, but if I can get the original soundtrack, or what sounds like an original soundtrack at least, then it's fine, but I do prefer an original soundtrack. The last James Cameron film I really liked, his last great film is to me Prometheus. I like Prometheus. Alien: Covenant, what a disaster. I hated it.

I will disagree. Digital can look great when it is done right. Skyfall and Sicario are a couple of digitally-captured movies that I thought looked absolutely stunning. I can't remember what Skyfall used, but Sicario used the ARRI Alexa 65 which is a 6K digital camera and is actually capable of capturing more detail than 35mm film without all the grain.
I dont think you actually understand the difference between digital and film. Grain is nothing more than an undesirable artifact of using film, whilst digital is objectively cleaner and better in pure picture quality and detail. Digital can better recreate what your eyes actually see in real life. What you call 'natural' is just your affinity with film, and being used to it before everything went digital. Digital looks different, and to YOU, less natural. That's fine, but that doesn't make it worse! Oh, and Cameron had nothing to do with Prometheus and Covenant, they are Ridley Scott films. Cameron only did Aliens.

Yup, unfortunately Matt and many others are still in denial of that and even Titanic as I've defended Titanic for years. Safe to say, I was ahead of the time buying the Spanish Bootleg Blu-Ray. Any clue as to where a good Blu-Ray of The Abyss from 1989 is at? I know Etsy has them, but they are pricey.
There never was a Blu-ray release. There is a finished HD master from around 2011 for True Lies and The Abyss and that is what was making the rounds on streaming. The Blu-ray of The Abyss you found is probably either a fan edit someone made or they burned that streaming version onto a disc and were selling it. Otherwise the only other "official" version that exists is the DVD, Laserdisc and VHS from years ago.

I remember watching the blu-ray of Aliens via the anthology set years ago and some of the darker scenes near the end were a flickery mess. For me personally, the less grain there is apart from films where grain was used for stylistic reasons, the better.
He was a filmmaking-god to me when I was younger. He was undoubtedly the greatest... by a longshot. Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens and Titanic are masterpieces. The Abyss and True Lies are great. I liked Avatar enough when it first came out. And then it started. He endorsed and promoted Terminator Genysis when it came out, and it turned out to be pure garbage. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, maybe it was backdoor politics. Then came the atrocity, complete trainwreck and sorry-ass excuse for a movie known as Dick Fate. Which he CO-WROTE and PRODUCED! "FUCK YOU, James Cameron!" was my first, and the only reasonable response. And it's been goin steeply downhill from that point on. From him saying in interviews he regrets having used guns the way he did in films such as T2 and Aliens to saying dumb shit about "toxic masculinity" to the absolute joke that is Avatar 2... for all I care he can keep making avatar movies till he turns blue himself. The man has little to no integrity left. I signed out. "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain."

Most modern technology (in terms of arts and entertainment) is like modern movies and television: bland, disappointing, unnecessary! Film grain looks old but adds a sense of nostalgia to old movies. I agree, AI works for photo artwork; nothing else really! This is like when AI was used to replicate Robin Williams' voice months ago. Why? Nobody asked for it and it wasn't necessary. Same applies with movies. Clear it up a little to keep it preserved, yes, but not relying on AI like this to do it to the extreme!
I saw the Abyss in theaters on 6 December when they put it out for 1 day only in 4k Special Edition. I don't know what you're complaining about, it looked AMAZING, better than I could've hoped for. Don't know about True Lies, but The Abyss was awesome and there was nothing to complain about. True Lies wasn't a very good movie anyways, very schlocky. So who cares?

this guy is me..T2 is one of my all time favorite movies and i have no way to watch it the way I want to because of the fucking DNR versions floating around. Peter Jackson did this to LOTR but at least the bluray is watchable. Cameron is just too far up his own ass.

True Lies is a very good movie, but i do consider it one of his weaker films, I think Titanic, The Terminator films and the recent Avatar sequel is superior to True Lies. I hated the first Avatar movie, but i thought the sequel was great i watched it 9 times in the theater

The future 8K remasters will replace the original characters with cartoon characters and a music for kids as a fair "quality upgrade" 😛

If anyone wants a great Aliens 4 k , Alien the OG is the one to get, I was very happy with it. Great stuff as usual Matt, hope you have a wonderful Christmas. All the best in the New Year. The Terminator 1984 is my only Jimmy movie . I prefer film over digital, yes 4k is nice but I do not like CGi over practical. Keep your physical media because many of our fav movies are changed and deleted forever , I have original versions of Star Wars , Empire , ROTJ on VHS, you will never find those versions again , they have been changed forever.

Current AI generated changes are ugly monstrosities. Oh, Jimmy! No. Leave your old films alone. Do videogames, instead. People will respect you again, since the 1980 and the 1990s if you went straight to videogames for your CGI bull-....Anyhow, to me, changing movies images with the use of AI generated technology is like a mangoloid 'bettering up' the origonal Mono Lisa painting and saying 'it is out of date. It needs an upgrade'.
Best thing for all of us to do is not buy these botch jobs! Dont give Jim Cam, Lightstorm, Disney any of our money! What is to hate about grain! As you say, it's detail. This is a huge slap in the face to fans and the idea of film preservation. Jim Cam has lost his marbles and they flew off to Pandora!

Jim Cameron should just let 3rd party film restorers do this stuff for him.
They already are - there's a 4K UHD Custom regrade of Aliens here on UA-cam that's already leagues better than the 2010 release. That was done, for free, by a single editor, and it still retains a large part of the grain and makes the film look like brand-new while still keeping the spirit of the original film stock.
The fact that Cameron waited nearly 30 years to get True Lies on disc, then opted to run through AI algorithms and push it out to disc and call it to day (saying nothing about the tie-in to a middling TV adaptation) should be seen as a slap in the face to the fans of that film.
I got tired of waiting for True Lies, Strange Days, and the Abyss in the US. I got the Region 2 blu rays along with a region free blu ray player and life is good. JCammy needs to retire to Pandora and be done.

Cameron should be credited more so as an editor for that film than a director in the sense that he broke into the producer's studio and made a bunch of editing changes to the film that the producer never caught onto... get your facts straight. The Terminator is his first real film as a writer/ director.

Im glad I have the Bootleg of True Lies .I noticed the EYES are effected on everyone. EVERYONE Looks like they stuck their finger in a light Socket.
Maybe I am having second thoughts about buying this release even for just the Blu-ray. Hell, the releases of also "The Abyss" and "Aliens" as well. "True Lies" had a good HD transfer when I saw it on Hulu, but it only lasts so long on there. I also remembered thinking "The Abyss" has a good HD transfer when I watched it on HBO Go a few years ago. Maybe I am better off tracking down unofficial releases.
The one that you saw earlier is a previous transfer done by Lowry Digital around 2011. There is a Spanish bootleg Blu-ray based on that transfer that looks a lot better. The same thing with the Abyss. Both movies were finished around 2011, and those are the masters all the streaming channels had until now when Cameron tweaked them more.

Alrernate opinion from a long time fan who also loves Cameron's new work. If you liked the Terminator 2 UHD, you will love this too. Grain has been an anesthetic choice even on film for a long time now. Chemical processing for film has gotten so good grain has been non-existent unless you ask to keep it for years. I prefer the clean look myself and this is in line with that. The 4K remaster looks awesome and I don't see any signs of AI upscaling that everyone is crying about. The film looks better than ever and is a great way to experience it again or for the first time.
But maybe because of the bonus materials is worth to buy...

I generally HATE digital. That is one of my biggest issues with modern cinema. Shot on film will always look better and far superior to digital, because it looks NATURAL. It looks genuine. Same reason why I'm a fan of exploitation films, because they have an authenticity to them.

Which is why I generally prefer to avoid Bluray, except for a few films like Cobra, which i just watched for the 35th time or what ever number it is,lol. But a film like Scream 5, Scream 6, and Terrifer 2. The color grading, color palette, just the entire look of those films bothers me, Terrifier 2 to an obscene degree. It was so brightly lit, so bluish tinted, so WASHED OUT I couldn't stand to even look at the screen.

And I honestly have not seen any of the Star wars movies since at least....2005? I remember watching Attack of the Clones and I was like "Screw Star wars!!!!" Those two movies Episode 1 and 2 left a permanent bad taste in my mouth for decades and then I'd see "New release George Lucas edition" with the original films practically gone. My oldest brother realizing I hadn't seen The Mandalorian practically had to force me to sit down and watch the first episode with him and I was like "Damn...this is REALLY REALLY good. That baby Yoda is adorable!"
and I've been thinking "I should really give the original films a rewatch." As well as E.T....but I know E.T has the weapons edited and replaced with Walkie talkies, and I am skeptical as to getting the original Star wars versions....and ya, sorry but I want the ORIGINAL F**KING FILM. Since last year, I've got really into 1920's silent films, and when it's clearly a modern soundtrack, I will look for the original online, because I want the ORIGINAL soundtrack that everyone heard back in the 1920's, and in cases where that isn't possible, fine, but if I can get the original soundtrack, or what sounds like an original soundtrack at least, then it's fine, but I do prefer an original soundtrack.
The last James Cameron film I really liked, his last great film is to me Prometheus. I like Prometheus. Alien: Covenant, what a disaster. I hated it.

I will disagree. Digital can look great when it is done right. Skyfall and Sicario are a couple of digitally-captured movies that I thought looked absolutely stunning. I can't remember what Skyfall used, but Sicario used the ARRI Alexa 65 which is a 6K digital camera and is actually capable of capturing more detail than 35mm film without all the grain.
I dont think you actually understand the difference between digital and film. Grain is nothing more than an undesirable artifact of using film, whilst digital is objectively cleaner and better in pure picture quality and detail. Digital can better recreate what your eyes actually see in real life. What you call 'natural' is just your affinity with film, and being used to it before everything went digital. Digital looks different, and to YOU, less natural. That's fine, but that doesn't make it worse!
Oh, and Cameron had nothing to do with Prometheus and Covenant, they are Ridley Scott films. Cameron only did Aliens.

What I don't like is when they overuse DNR (or other tricks like edge enhancement) to the point where it destroys detail in the picture. You can only make film look so 'clean.' A movie made in 1989 on film is not going to look like one made in 2019 on digital and vise versa.

Yup, unfortunately Matt and many others are still in denial of that and even Titanic as I've defended Titanic for years. Is it overlong, does it have some corny dialgoue... sure... but at the end of the day Titanic is one of if not the most ambitious productions in the history of feature filmmaking. Period. People say True Lies was his last good film which is a bunch of bologne.. Titanic is a masterpiece, JC's magnum opus in my opinion, some will say it's T2 but I believe it's Titanic... Avatar and Avatar The Way of Water on the other hand lack in story department although the sequel improved on the story but are both visual masterpieces that actually introduced a lot of new visual concepts and pushed technology to new levels...

Why cant we get both versions, DNR and non DNR? Why not a Bladerunner style set with all versions, all changes? I lnow I go back to my bootleg bluray original Star Wars trilogy because I cant stand the official 4k versions as they are the altered versions.

There never was a Blu-ray release. There is a finished HD master from around 2011 for True Lies and The Abyss and that is what was making the rounds on streaming. The Blu-ray of The Abyss you found is probably either a fan edit someone made or they burned that streaming version onto a disc and were selling it. Otherwise the only other "official" version that exists is the DVD, Laserdisc and VHS from years ago.

I remember watching the blu-ray of Aliens via the anthology set years ago and some of the darker scenes near the end were a flickery mess. For me personally, the less grain there is apart from films where grain was used for stylistic reasons, the better.

He was a filmmaking-god to me when I was younger. He was undoubtedly the greatest... by a longshot. Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens and Titanic are masterpieces. The Abyss and True Lies are great. I liked Avatar enough when it first came out. And then it started. He endorsed and promoted Terminator Genysis when it came out, and it turned out to be pure garbage. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, maybe it was backdoor politics. Then came the atrocity, complete trainwreck and sorry-ass excuse for a movie known as Dick Fate. Which he CO-WROTE and PRODUCED! "FUCK YOU, James Cameron!" was my first, and the only reasonable response. And it's been goin steeply downhill from that point on. From him saying in interviews he regrets having used guns the way he did in films such as T2 and Aliens to saying dumb shit about "toxic masculinity" to the absolute joke that is Avatar 2... for all I care he can keep making avatar movies till he turns blue himself. The man has little to no integrity left. I signed out.

Most modern technology (in terms of arts and entertainment) is like modern movies and television: bland, disappointing, unnecessary! Film grain looks old but adds a sense of nostalgia to old movies. I agree, AI works for photo artwork; nothing else really! This is like when AI was used to replicate Robin Williams' voice months ago. Why? Nobody asked for it and it wasn't necessary. Same applies with movies. Clear it up a little to keep it preserved, yes, but not relying on AI like this to do it to the extreme!

I saw the Abyss in theaters on 6 December when they put it out for 1 day only in 4k Special Edition. I don't know what you're complaining about, it looked AMAZING, better than I could've hoped for. Don't know about True Lies, but The Abyss was awesome and there was nothing to complain about. True Lies wasn't a very good movie anyways, very schlocky. So who cares?

this guy is me..T2 is one of my all time favorite movies and i have no way to watch it the way I want to because of the fucking DNR versions floating around. Peter Jackson did this to LOTR but at least the bluray is watchable. Cameron is just too far up his own ass.

Thanks for the warning about his continuing obsession with DNR sounds Like Predator and T2 again I have the Japanese Import of True Lies on DVD which I have been happy with for years and along with the Abyss and Aliens I will not risk my money on some one who does not respect the difference between digital and film

True Lies is a very good movie, but i do consider it one of his weaker films, I think Titanic, The Terminator films and the recent Avatar sequel is superior to True Lies. I hated the first Avatar movie, but i thought the sequel was great i watched it 9 times in the theater
