- In this video Dr Patel explains the basics of how to manage a "double chin". He explains the basic aspects of the surgery as well as describes some alternative treatments.
Submental, or chin liposuction, involves a procedure in which a surgeon makes three subcentimeter incisions and uses a cannula to remove fat from the neck. After waiting an appropriate time the neck, chin and jawline get a slimmer contour.

Thank You Dr. Patel for being honest about kybella and other procedures. I tied kybella once (luckily for free) and I experienced exactly what you warned us about. Hurt like hell, swollen, bumps that lasted well beyond what they say it would and in the end...NADA!! So many other doctors try to push expensive and useless procedures. It's also important, as you mention, to consider your current weight. I'm hoping at some point to get Lipo in that area but also wondering if my small chin is contributing to it as well. As a Flight Attendant, I'm hoping to gather information to share with my colleagues. One question I do have is doing the "chin" exercises really help? why some surgeons choose local anesthesia over the general one (during chin lipo) ? I saw in your video that the patient was under the general anesthesia (if I'm correct), but I've heard most chin lipos now are performed through local anesthesia. Does it depend on the procedure of the lipo for each patient?
I do 99% under local anesthesia. The main reasons to do them under general would be an extreme fear of needles or anxiety. That's about it. It is perfectly safe to do under local. I had a funny patient tell me it is basically like a really weird massage where you can't feel anything. The worst part is the numbing but that is lasts 3-4 minutes and you can think of it like a tattoo, laser hair removal or waxing.

Is there a way to get full anesthetics? I don't really want to be awake for the process. Also, I noticed that you said to wear the headwrap as much as possible after the reccomended time: would I have to do this for the rest of my life? Or is there an estimated time as to how long I have to do this. I'm 20.
For 20 I would reccomend one week of wearing it all the time then one week woth it at night. You can always do it under general anesthesia it’s just more $$$

Dr Patel what age would you recommend getting chin Lipo done . I am 38 and I had been told that my chin would have laxity issues . If I get it done now . Would you say otherwise and have recommendations to prevent the skin sag after lipo
You need to meet with someone in person if you feel your laxity is an issue. Usually men aren't a major issue at 38 if they have dark skin, have had a stable weight and the lipo is not over agressive

I had chin lipo and my surgeon made only 1 incision in the middle and it barely made a difference.I now have a tightening feeling and it feels like my veins are popping out on my neck. Do you have any idea what this could be?
Did it heal ? or did the final result look good , I currently went to get Chin lipo and the girl that is currently doing my lymphatic drainage massages noticed i only had 1 incision and she said it was weird , but most people that get chin lipo get 1 of each side and in the center

There is no good BMI. I'd say that under 30 is obviously best. Some people can be at a BMI of 20 and still have stubborn under chin fat.
Sir I'm 24 years old and I have a skinny body I have a fold of skin under my chin I'm not exactly able to differentiate whether it is fat or loose skin or something else but I really look wiered what should I go for !!
DANYAL Ghanie you need to setup a consult with a doctor. Most likely fat that can be solved with lipo but a professional opinion is needed!
Loved your video very informative. I just did my chin lipo and my lip is slanted ... is this normal? My dr says it should go back to normal but I am a bit worried it may be Permanent? If not when can my smile go back to normal? Does this ever happen with your patients

Your age, 49 typically is beyond the age where you skin will retract down so you might need an in person consultation to see if you're an exception or would need a neck lift at the same time! Hi, im 1 week after slim lipo of my little double chin, bud that chin still there even worse. My skin is good condition and it wasn't big fat double chin. Do you think is to early to rate the result Or should I go for correction ?

I'm fat but I don't have a huge double chin just a little one and some neck fat. I'm losing weight but even when I was much lighter I still had the double chin. I want this surgery done now but would you recommend me waiting to get a surgery like this or will I still see good results now?
Get the surgery done at your ideal (not goal) body weight. If you have to bet your money on what your weight will honestly be over the next 5 years...get to that weight and do the surgery. You weight needs to be stable before and after the surgery (and in general) :)

Hi! 57 is a bit tough. Even with the best of skin there is likely going to be loose or wrinkly skin when done. No doubt you’d need someone to feel your skin to see if you can get away with anything other than a neck lift to tighten the skin.

Carmen Peguero You can! The recovery for buccal is literally a day however if you get chino lipo you have to wear a head wrap for a week so the recovery process is slightly longer when you add chin lipo. The combined results are amazing however!

Yes you can! Cool sculpting does not create as much scar and Kybella but deep scar can slightly limit your results

I spent 2,500 and it didn't work either, it left me a lot worse than before I ever did it. Before I did it, it wasn't noticeable and now it is and it's been over a year since and the swelling never went away. I think it left me scar tissue in the inside because it feels hard, not sure if liposuction can also remove that.

Angela Markopoyloy I think it makes the surgeons job easier and the patient is the one who pays the extra cost...the improvement in results from skin tightening is debatable but I’d say you likely do get better results but not worth the price difference. Go to a surgeon who takes their time is the most important thing!

There are very rare circumstances where it makes sense in the chin. I did a study and the company used $6800 worth of product in it's patients during the clinical trials. It works but given the risk profile of lipo and the scars that aren't an issue, anyone who reccomends it over liposuction likely JUST doesn't know how to do liposuction.

I am 5wks post-submental chin lipo and I have a hard 2cm lump directly under my chin and now I look worse than before I even had the procedure! I massage many times a day and wear my compression wraps 24/7.. I’m so sad because it looks worse now, pls any advice? Unfortunately, due to COVID 19 I have t been able to see my Surgeon..
samantha charlton hi Samantha. First of the good news is that lipo lumpia’s are totally normal. Usually not bad enough for it to be worse and in the ideal world your surgeon could see you and inject some steroid. The good news is this does usually go away. Continue massaging as aggressively as your surgeon allows and even warm compresses can help! You’ll do great just give it more time!
