Ahahaha you should see what didn't make it into the map.
It is very close to what source engine can handle so a lot got cut to make the map playable... It is a prime example of feature creep.
And don't look at the horrible Lua code for the door controller not my best work.
But on the plus side it behaves almost bacterial like. To get rid of those you need to remove all of them in the same tick or they restore each other ;-)

Mobenix was a criminally underrated map, probably one of the best sandbox maps to come out of the game.
It's like the natural end of Gmod: someone set out to create a Swiss Army map with numerous built-in secrets and features, but still left things open-ended enough to allow user input and creation. A little something for everyone: the sandbox players, the physics and wire experimenters, the roleplayers, the car builders, the boat builders, the train builders, all these little Gmod niches being catered to in one map. To be that big and still look that good and polished is an incredible feat in itself. I always hated that for a map kind of passed-over as it is, the roleplaying features of it were utilized the least (especially considering the Dark RP/Sandbox hybrid modes that sometimes popped up), those little details like the theft-prevention system and the turnstile locks were fun additions. Guess that was the big flaw of Mobenix, besides getting butchered by updates: it had no clear direction one way or the other.
Probably my favorite map in the game when all's said and done, I never could find anyone running it in a coherent, populated server. Even then, I'd sometimes just boot it up in singleplayer just to explore and mess around on it. Once endured a Brony-themed server just to get the chance to play on it with other people.

It feels so weird watching this years later after the map was made, and probably after people stopped using it. You are impressed at the size, complexity, and detail in this map, knowing it was made for a group of people that were tight. Knowing the hours spent on this map, people having the time of their life doing almost anything they wanted. Plus the Garry's Mod aesthetic and the fact the map looks so homely, yet so barren. Its like seeing a ghost town, but not run down or destroyed, just.. Empty. Its like nostalgia by osmosis. You KNOW something wonderful happened here, but not to you; However you still feel like you know it, somehow.
Sorry for commenting an essay, But GMod always gets me nostalgic even though i have barley 100 hours in it. Its interesting seeing all of the structures that were made to serve a purpose to someone. The isolated feeling these huge empty maps bring is amazing, it can even be scary at times too. there is always something haunting about these maps clearly made for a certain group of people. You can tell a lot of effort went into these maps, more effort than most. But you also see hints of someone's personality in it as well. the two easter egg rooms, the gnomes driving all the automated things, the elevator trap, the exploding g-man, the small segments clearly designed after a typical RP server. this was made for a group of friends.
i can imagine the group exploring the map in the beta versions. one of the testers goading another person who is here for the first time to go in the elevator with the gnome, followed by laughter emanating from those with mics. people designing cars both functional and silly and racing them. the few people who break windows so much the maker installed a reset window switch. them holding bowling contests as someone played the bouncy ball song in the dance room behind them.
but when you boot up this map alone. it feels abandoned. there is nostalgia for something you never had. you may not know if the group this was made for is still around. but even if they are, they aren't here. it's just you alone in this expansive and lovingly made playground.

Pretty much my feelings on many of these Source maps, it makes me feel like I'm late to a party that ended many years ago. These places are mostly forgotten relics of the past decade and everyone involved has moved on, but there's a strange, sad beauty to them. You wonder what the place must have been like during it's prime, how many friendships were made messing around there, and where everyone moved on to.

I'm glad to see someone cover it relatively recently, and your style was very enjoyable to watch.
It's kinda sad that the original developer no longer makes maps, but I'm glad they're doing well for themselves.
Also, it's kinda crazy that, even after years of playing on this same map, there are _still_ things to discover. From that easter egg and fail room you showed, to things in the comments like the station collapse, things I've walked past time after time.

I remember playing on sandbox servers that ran this map when I was a kid. I remember being accused of mic spamming because I was singing and my voice was annoying, and me crying about it to my mom which just made things more cringy. I remember learning how to use wiremod on this map, where a good steam friend of mine taught me the ins and outs until i was ready to go out on my own and try and make something cool. I remember hosting large scale battles with other players where we'd rage at each other for using overpowered m9k weapons. I remember what it felt like having and endless amount of free time to do whatever I felt like doing. This game and by extension the video, makes me feel a deep amount of nostalgia.

It's a really well-made map in my opinion, plenty of cool little things to do when you don't feel like building, tracks for train nerds, plenty of nice scenery that doesn't get in the way of building, and lots of interesting and varied playspaces for deathmatch kind of stuff. Like, that little area with the shop that has the one entrance and exit? That was always fun to turn into like, a fort, and to have people try to break into it, or to use it as a holdout against NPCs
Hope the mapper sees these comments and sees how much he contributed to some good times.

I remember playing this with my friends back in the day. Sitting at my desk for hours at my parents house. We would have battles with gun addons, battles with our own made mechs, races, base building, roleplaying. And just overall fucking about. We could spend hours playing garrysmod. It would only be late at night for me and my other friend though. Since our friend who used to host lived in America (we didnt). Staying up all night, even days when it probably wasnt optimal to sit up at 3am. This map was one of the ibggest parts of my childhood. And looking back at it now fills me with happyness, nostalgia but also some sadness. Knowing that my days with my buddies on this map are pretty much over, never to come back again. We started playing it when we were about 11 years old maybe. But as we grew older the usual happens. School got more intense, different time zones and schedules got in the way. Time for playing was slim to none at the time. We always used to say "Imagine when we graduate, we will have all the time in the world to play!". But that didnt turn out like we expected. Work was more than we imagined. Moving out we realized that staying up til 3 am in the morning on a tuesday wasnt going to help with work. And if the didnt do well enough at work, well, we wouldnt have anywhere to live. So work took over our lives, it has now been maybe over a year since I last talked to my friend in America. Me and my other buddy sometimes go to bars together and reminice. And we always say the same thing, "We should do that again sometime". The stories we made, battles we raged, and the friends we found. Nothing comes close. Thank you for making this video. This is something I will never forget, but sometimes need to be reminded of.

It definitely still has the opportunity for chaos and darker RP's, but that's the beauty of it (or at least, that's what I think) - It can be both a relaxing town RP, or something wilder. Personally I'd love to live out my wildest fantasies in that server... like getting a stable job, buying things, then putting those things in a house that I actually own and paid for. Those seemingly random black boxes are a common practice for mappers, where logic_relays,entities and such are placed in it.
They serve no other purpose other than storing functions and features of a map in a normaly inaccessable place.
It's used for keeping everything in one place, rather than having to look for something across the entire map, in case there is a bug in the map and you would want to fix that in the next version.

    • @Freak-On-A-Leash
      @Freak-On-A-Leash 4 роки тому

The Black box is actually a buffer zone for the tunnel placement.
It stores some IO functions and houses all the possible tunnel variation that will get despawned on map spawn there.
Its mainly there to prevent any baked light shadows appearing on the parts.
      How do i know this?

I used to spend so much time on this map, watching this video feels like watching a paleontologist brushing off the dinosaur bones of my childhood. Knowing it's still out there makes me want to return to it with VRMod, especially with the bowling alley.

It's always kinda surreal watching this stuff, as I feel like I'm learning the history of an abandoned city or something.

Bro I spent so much time on this map, I always wanted to try like, DarkRP with it or something, I only ever dicked around with it with 0-2 people online on my own server hosting it off my PC.
You showed me a ton of things I never knew about myself.

I downloaded this map because I saw it on one video from 2016. When I was playing this map, I knew it's perfect for a lot of stuff. Imagine having RP server on this map. Apartments for players, dock area for working, train and taxi would be in use for players. It's also great for Sandbox gameplay with friends.
Also it's weird that this video is showing up when I am returning to GMod.

This map has so many childhood memories for me. I remember building railcarts with friends and claiming parts of the map. Racing with custom buggies and doing dance parties.

I felt this map was ambitious. Back in the day I felt this map was incredibly high-end and I remember being surprised my PC at the time could handle it. This map is a classic and deserves recognition in GMod history. This was around 2009-2010

Exploring old G-Mod maps by yourself feels all weird and dreamlike, I think it's liminal spaces? same goes for old websites.

theres something really ominous about a map this big thats intended for large servers to mess around in being this empty
