  • On March 1st, 1994, Nirvana played their final show at Terminal 1 in Munich, Germany. At the time, there was nothing noteworthy about this performance. Aside from some technical issues and illness, it was a very standard show for Nirvana. But in hindsight, there's a lot that stands out. Most prominently a joke Krist made between songs that foreshadowed the future with creepy accuracy.
By the time 1994 came around, relations within Nirvana were strained and Kurt Cobain was on a downward spiral. His drug use was catching up to him and the pressure of touring in his state was immense. Cracks were definitely starting to show during this final gig. Ultimately, we know how things would end for both Kurt and the band. As a result, Nirvana's final show is pretty depressing. But also an interesting look into a band on their way out.

I was there! I was living in Munich and a little homesick, so I went. I had bought "Nevermind" in '91. I was a fan, but not a huge fan. I really went because Grunge hadn't really taken over in Munich and I couldn't find other people with the same music taste. Krist did most of the talking. In my recollection Kurt only spoke 2 words, "Danke schoen". At one point when the power went out Krist went offstage and came back strapping on an accordian. He played for a second, then the power came back on. I sold the ticket on the 25th anniversary of the show to get $ for my 50th birthday party.

@MUSTARD583 Hi, yeah, it was a bit surreal. In addition to the fact that we got news differently then, I was traveling and didn't pick up a paper for days. March 1994 was my last month living in Munich. I had been there over a year and I took the entire month of April to travel. I had heard of him overdosing in Rome a couple of days after the show and feared it had been a suicide attempt. I learned of his death while on a train through the Alps. I had struck up a conversation with a journalist who was returning from a conference and when she found out I was American she pulled out a newspaper and asked if I had ever heard of Kurt Cobain. Nirvana wasn't well known in Europe. You can imagine my shock when I saw the headline: "Rocker erschiesst sich". All I kept thinking was that I had just seen him. He can't be dead. I suspected that I had seen the last show, but it was so hard to verify things. When I returned to the States on May 1 all the magazines were in "dead rock star mode" and I read the Rolling Stone special issue. That's where it confirmed that the March 1 show was the final one. I kept it to use for verification since I figured I'd sell the ticket someday. My reaction to his death was more of concern for his family, especially his child. As I'm aging, though, I find myself feeling very, very sad, especially when I watch the Unplugged episode. I think of all the music we missed and of Kurt's politics. Kurt was very pro-LGBTQ+, pro women's rights and he, Krist and Dave were wearing dresses before it became a meme. I wish I could remember more details from the show, but I'm planning on doing a video for my vinyl community channel in a few days, so check it out.

@@mariawesley7583 I will gladly watch the video when it comes out keep me posted! thanks for replying to all my questions, I'm sorry you had to find out like that. I think that kurts death is still a very open wound that never healed for many people. it was and still is a tragedy he died so young it makes me wonder what the world would have been like today im sure many more peoples minds would be in a different state about woman's rights and lgbtqia+ if he had been here to raise awareness.
