Installing Lattice under the Big Porch

- After installing a large porch on the front of the house I noticed that the support posts were not straight. To hide my mistakes I am installing some white PVC lattice. This was a spur of the moment decision but I think that it turned out well.
When you install lattice I would use trim boards to install instead of screws. The trim will allow for contraction and expansion of the material.

Nice to see someone doing the best they can with what they know (on their own house) not everyone is Bob the builder.. if your happy then that's all that matters.
I would've measured good then make a "frame" with boards and lattice so there's boards on top and bottom of lattice so it looks neater. I would also have added a couple boards vertically to give more support to the lattice, then boards in front of them to cover up the lattice seams.
You should always frame the lattice sections on all four sides for a much better finished look. they sell those wherever you bought the lattice.
Got to be honest...I don't think I would have the guts or patience to build a deck with my father. So kudos to you for doing that. I think you guys will cherish the moments down the road. As for the lattice alignment...plant a couple well place cedars and call it a day. 😉
You really need to pre-drill your screw holes slightly bigger than the screw, and do not tighten your screw. Your lattice should be able to move in place due to contraction, and expansion. I guarantee you will see this warp in 1-2 year, and they may even crack at that seems. You can for sure remedy this. The less screws that hold this, the better. Rule of thumb is every 24".
Truth! I did the same thing they did, after one winter I'm back on UA-cam looking for the correct way to install lattice as ours buckled/cracked and now needs to be replaced. :/

It was a fun first build.
Fortunately, your leaning posts are short... and thick. Buckling isn't a concern, but I'd keep an eye on the degree of leaning... take a good elevation photo now and do it again every 6 months. If they seem to lean more, I'd shore up the deck and replace the columns. Otherwise, you could have a corner collapse sometime when you've overloaded the deck with people, or snow, or when the ground is saturated with rain or flooding. Lattice looks great though! Lattices need to be framed if you don’t want it to look trashy.
At this point it would be so easy too. Looks awful.
Personally I'd be focusing on that support before anything else. You certainly can't cover up a defect and expect everything just to be okay lol
If the support goes out guess what happens to your entire deck?
Its kind of like slapping old worn out brake pads to brand new rotors!
Yea it’s insane to me lattice was even a suggestion those post are so far out of plumb that’s not safe to walk on. No cross bracing I mean atleast the whole deck needs to be jacked up and proper supports placed

FYI, the lattice is a good cheap fix, but I worry about vermin getting and making a home under your Deck....
You should not ignore the post leaning that way. That is very unsafe and that deck will not stay standing for a long time.

This is a perfect example of tear it down and start all over again. I’m sorry, but that deck is awful and in this day and age with all the resources available to the homeowner DIY person, there’s no excuses for doing this poor of a job, except for pure laziness.
