The full AP Yi build was popular back in Season 1, before he got reworked. It was probably one of the best off meta builds in League.

I'm genuinely curious since I started at S11, what made AP Yi so broken back then? Like what part of his kit made him very turbo-steamroller?
I wouldn't call him broken, he was just interesting in the sense that he was a very one trick pony champ - he only had one ability that did damage so he was actually pretty useless, but if you got into a position where the enemy team was low enough for you to get one or two Q resets he could easily wipe the whole team
First of all, he had a 100% ap ratio on his q, and he also had a 100% ap ratio on his w. So if you had q on cd, then you could theoretically use w, and you wouldn't die. Once q came back off cd just q more, and you win. Ez
can one shot you with Q and tank alone with his W.
his Q and W scales with AP back then. Not broken but can be annoying because you can't burst him and with his W damage reduction, he would just face tank everything with his W specially when he has Rabaddon.
obviously, if he built ap, then the ap ratios on his abilities were broken, that's it

Oh man, that Sykkuno gameplay really takes me back to S2 when I used to climb out of the real depths of elo hell with AP yi into silver and eventually gold.
I still remember that even getting out of bronze was an achievement because there were many players below 1200 MMR all the way down to 0 MMR, and I even went all the way down to like 600 MMR at one point lmao
becoming bronze back then is the equivalent of getting into gold today in terms of grind haha, the highest tier was Plat!
2/3 items to have 300/400 ap only and you can almost oneshot 1v5

That's one of the first things I started maining in this game so yeah, I remember him. He had one severe disadvantage to the normal AD build, though - he was useless on his own and required his team to get the enemy to a level where he could start resetting.

For those confused as to how this is viable, His Q damage and W healing used to scale with AP back in the day, so he just did turbo damage with his Q while having insane healing on his W. Ofcourse AP items usually come with CDR which makes him able to spam his Q

His ult also reset his cooldownds evereytime he killed someone

also his W used to have something crazy like 90% dmg reduction for the whole duration, not like it is now

5 spellbinder and boots (or 6 spellbinder) on Vladimir is one of the strongest build I ever seen.

For me the best damage output champion was going Graves adc when Stormrazors just came out, every 4 seconds it was a 100% crit strike with old Conqueror doing true damage and some lifesteal

With old bleed passive, he'd buy a BF sword first back, come to lane, chuck a Q at you and do half your health. Good times.

Yes, I remember it as once of the most unballanced things in the old league. It was fun to play a game or two but having to play against it was a real nightmare so I'm glad it's long gone.

I still remember the video when Riot was announcing that they were getting rid of this. For an example, they had an AP Yi healing while the entire enemy team was attacking him. Afterwards, he was still at full and proceeded to Alpha Strike them all to death.

everyone here says why he was broken, but he never got on the ban lists seasons 1-4 like malph, shen, amumu, kassadin.
He did have many counters, basically any champ with good lane sustain and instant dodge such as vlad.
As an AP yi mid player i experienced that much any top laner would match or beat him since they typically had better lane sustain than burst ap mids.
Also the laning phase wasn't always good. It wasn't possible to kill all 6 minions with one Q, many had to be last-hit melee attacked which meant walking into attack range of your opponent and risk of being ganked. AP yi had no escapes since he could only ability flash forward into minions.
Nukers with CC also beat AP yi, a good mid laner would counter yi by saving stun for when u tried to W heal.
many gave Yi a hard time in laning phase Annie, Malz, Ori, Talon.
Kata was an interesting matchup because she had no defense to yi, yet she was such a nuker she'd often just absorb all the damage but then go gank and kill before yi and just get ahead and win the game.
Players today don't know how unsustained mid laners were back in season 1-3. U had health pots and that was it, if u got low, u just had to risk-lane with low hp for many waves.
When that sustain heal+man pot came out season3-4, that was a big hit to AP Yi.
Thing is Yi did hard counter many AP mids at team select. Several mid laners without hard cc or sustain or escape was doomed against yi. Karthus was easy to lane against.
Team fights weren't so easy either. A good enemy team would know to stay spaced out, and also not to loiter behind a wave of minions since yi could Q the first minion and deal damage to champions way behind the minion wave. If u alpha striked onto an enemy team too early, u were dead. This ' stay spaced out' tactic was well known and practiced because there were many champs that were good at attacking grouped enemies. Team fights in the jungle or at baron and drake were good strategies against ap yi.
Ppl aren't mentioning yi was a good lane ganker, particully pre lvl 6. He could consistantly arrive at gank with 100% HP, gank very fast with his R (enemies very rarely were able to retreat in time), and gurantee damage with his Q and then hack with his E. He could get back to lane and easily last hit minions with E under his tower before the tower ate them.
Great days; but riot made it their long term policy to kill any fun player might have with fave champions.
It's all about meta nowadays, back then you could just choose a champ you liked and play it till the end :/
I got an ap build for yi (or you may call it, true damage yi) power spike at 2 or 3 leg items depending on what u choose first nashor or rift
if against high point and click cc team dont play yi kinda trolling if you are a chad let the opposing team know that that's just a skill issue
Runes: lethal tempo, triumph, atk speed, cut down (Second) sudden impact, balls collections, ravenous hunter.
Why do i do this build you may wonder, because nobody can itemize against you since you are not going to deal much AD damage but mostly True damage

2atk speed boots
3 Nashor tooth
4 rift-maker
5 Rageblade
6 death dance or phantom dancer
Try this one ^^. It's some Korean player who used it to get to masters. Feels like ap yi but it is AD (unfortunately). Easy lane phase and extremely bursty! You should be realizing this Sykunno is straining his voice to hell and back. His voice in his current streams is absolutely his regular speaking voice. If it wasn't, he wouldn't be able to keep it up for hours and hours on end IMO

I really miss old AP Yi =/ besides several old build paths that used to be viable and don't really work well nowadays.
I wish Riot would reconsider giving back the full build freedom that existed with changes to skills to re-add alternatives, like AP Yi, Full AD Akali, Tank Ekko, Tank Karma, and others that used to be viable and currently were changed nerfed or otherwise made fully non-viable.
Riot pretty much deleted every ap champ that was fun to play.
old AP Yi, old AP Sion, old Galio, old AP Taric, soraka, tristana. They should have just deleted league.

Old League champions usually have both AP and AD scaling on one or two abilities, for what reasons nobody really know. In this case was season 3 Master yi used to have 100% AP scaling on his Q and W, so basically his Q oneshot you after 3 items, and his W can tank 2 turrets and still heal him to full health while getting 70% dmg reduction. around the same time there were AP Jax, AP Xinzhao, AP Warwick, AP Sion were also on the same level of bullshit
After the 2014 huge update they got rid of most of these bullshit hybrid scaling. And newer champion were designed to avoid this to happen.
I was here for old summoners rift but I wasn't here for that thankfully lol. The only thing I'll truly feel nostalgia for is old Rengar with his flat heal W

Who doesn't remember a 6 deaths yi at 26 minuts, killing your entire team, while your team is 11 kills ahead and losing you the game because he gets to solo kill your entire team.... Yes I loved it.
