The people saying, "Kill the animals" are not actually psychopaths who enjoy killing living beings. "Saving the animals" is a hidden trick in Super Metroid that requires going in the wrong direction to find and save some animal characters. Anyone trying for the best possible time would never do it, they would opt to "Kill the animals, save the frames." There have been a few elite runners who deliberately handicapped themselves this way but still got the world record (for a short time). This history is why saving/killing the animals is such an exciting decision for many people, and why it's one of the most popular donation incentives for GDQ events.
Thank you for this! This video came up on my suggestions and decided to watch since i am replaying this game. I was horrified at the “kill the animals” statements. Now i wont feel terrible watching and supporting the channel
1:20:05 I like how the donator said "Put this towards saving the animals, it's what Link what would do," even though he literally just burnt a vulture alive.
Very inspiring. Just finished my first playthrough after watching this and am happy to say that I managed to pull off the Ice Palace trick. Still, I returned later to get blue vest.
Heh, around the 14 minute area she read a donation from a "Chris Houlihan"... that's the name of the kid that won that sweepstakes to have his name put in the game(but the room can only be found through glitching and similar means).
@Shizune Hakamichi You and Puppetmaster9 already beat me to it. :D The stage select screen in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 error handler serves a similar function.
One of the most influential games ever. It's like almost every top-down action indie game owes something to it. Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, and Hyper Light Drifter just to name a few.
Two things about Patty here. First, thank you. Now, I can never not see a cowboy hat with the wise men. Second, I found the video from Kholdstare that was referenced during the Ice Palace. Can't help but feel good watching him get it perfectly clean after a lot of time into it.
For anyone wondering about "Shout outs to waffle", here's the twitch VOD of waffle42 getting bodied by all of the rocks at the same time. www.twitch.tv/waffle42/c/3323476
Not working for me. Here's one that does work though: go.twitch.tv/videos/45723591 The moment you're looking for is right at the beginning and it's worth it.
Whaaaaat, holy fuck! I, honestly, had no idea that elder guy was a bald elf, I always saw a dude in cowboy hat. I mean, the kid you chase down with the boots in Kakariko is wearing a cowboy (ish) hat, so I just never questioned it... This changes everything...
so it turns out for most of the run i didnt realise that the runners name was xelna i though they were just parodying 'zelda' as a joke in the donation messages lol
As someone who really enjoys this game, I loved the speed run. I am confused about one thing though: What’s with the whole “and kill the animal’s” thing? I don’t get why that’s so funny.
It’s referencing something in Super Metroid. When you are finishing the game you have the option to save the animals before you are done or you can bypass them and end the game. It’s slower to save them which is why they typically don’t in speed runs.
10:56 that crack on the wall on the left anyone know if there is anything there? it drove me crazy as a kid.. i always wanted to know whats behind that crack if anything.
After you get the power gloves (after the dungeon where you get the second pendant) you can go to a graveyard area on the map, push a tomb and go inside... you will drop on the other side of that broken wall. I am sure they are some goods there, like rupees and probably arrows/bombs.
They are in a hidden room in the escape sequence. It's ridiculously unlikely to find them without a hint or weird chance. (Obviously your comment is 4 months old so you may already know this.)
On the last gannon, i think I remember that if you dont run to be right by him after he teleports, he will stay put. Like try to be as far away from him as you can and he stays at his first port i thought... am I wrong?
right, but I think you can avoid him immediately teleporting back to back if you stay as far away as possible the first time and don't run toward him when he appears, i think there is a buffer of a few seconds after he appears. i dunno seemed like i remembered that, maybe not
quick question which they probably mentioned in the begining, idk. But if it's 100% completion, why didn't he raise his bombs and arrows capacity. also does this game have a wallet upgrades like uhh... is it minish cap?
+Sesshomaru474 No wallet upgrades. Bombs and arrows have been ignored since 2003 or so. There's no corresponding inventory item for bombs and arrows either.
+Davey wavey Super Metroid was an upcoming speed-run. Throughout the game, there are friendly animals you find that teach you certain abilities. During the final phase in the game where you have to escape the planet before it blows up, you can come across the animals trapped in a side room. And considering these are speed runs, it's more optimal to not waste time saving them. So the people that were donating money were putting money towards either having the player waste time saving them or ignoring them and letting them die when the planet blows up.
DukeDarkshadow ah ok, yea i've never beaten super metroid, the only metroids i've ever beaten were the remake for gba, and metroid 2 for normal gameboy.
There is a category for literally everything in the game. All maps, compasses, bomb and arrow upgrades, etc. And guys still manage it in about 2 hours.
Amazing run. I have a question about the controller. Since mine is about 25 years old its starting to not work quite well anymore.. where do these guys get their controller from? since they use it so hardcore, i guess they're controllers are done much faster than mine..
There are cheapo third party replacement controllers you can get on ebay for like $10. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty and wanna repair it, there's a rubber bit that separates the buttons from the board in the controller that wears down over time. Getting replacements of those is even cheaper.
+Hansel Lau You're right, it's called Exploration Glitch, but it's not fitting for the 100% category and overall it's really boring, so the most played category is any% noEG.. but World Record is 1min 41s I think.
As a general rule, if the title doesn't say otherwise, in-bounds glitches/zips are OK, but going out of bounds isn't. OoB is generally considered a separate category, since in many games it lets you walk directly from the start point to the end flag, thereby negating the entire point of the game (Link to the Past being one such example). That said, there are some games where even OoB glitches don't save much time. so there are always exceptions.

Well said, now like 500 other vids to post it on!
1:20:05 I like how the donator said "Put this towards saving the animals, it's what Link what would do," even though he literally just burnt a vulture alive.
1:08:50 is my favorite part. Bomb jump, hammer sprint, Pegasus ricochet. Such a compact series of strats
Best run, best reader, best young link impression.
The reader's young link impression was actually pretty darn accurate IMO. Not quite as sharp and piercing as the real thing, but still very good.
1:04:45 is by far the best part of this, and the run itself is already phenomenal

+Ted Parsons thanks for this Post, this guy is hilarious :D
Does he have a twitch stream? Dude had me dying.
pcull44444
Patty was the best part of the run, ha ha. Of course, I've been casually watching his stuff since he was just a small-time Let's Player on UA-cam.
I like how she screams as link, she's perfect!
Very inspiring. Just finished my first playthrough after watching this and am happy to say that I managed to pull off the Ice Palace trick. Still, I returned later to get blue vest.
KackBratze001 was this on us or Japanese cersion?
I appreciate how Xelna is dressed all formal for the event. A true professional!
Nice speedrun. One of my favorite games of all time. Has such a nice flow to it.
Amazing reader, amazing couch - Great way to spend two hours
Heh, around the 14 minute area she read a donation from a "Chris Houlihan"... that's the name of the kid that won that sweepstakes to have his name put in the game(but the room can only be found through glitching and similar means).
+Uchiha Madara you run so fast the game can't track where you are and puts you in the Chris Houlihan room so yeah glitches
+Uchiha Madara It's a failsafe room. It's where the game defaults your destination to if you can't be put anywhere else.
@Shizune Hakamichi You and Puppetmaster9 already beat me to it. :D The stage select screen in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 error handler serves a similar function.
I love this announcer. She has such a nice voice!
Me and my daughter(23yrs old) fall asleep to this every night😊
One of the most influential games ever. It's like almost every top-down action indie game owes something to it. Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, and Hyper Light Drifter just to name a few.

the old 2D games hold up so well visually
1:29:46 Sooo the butter sword is pretty important because all the late game enemies are really lactose intolerant so it does a lot of damage xD
When ALttP runs smoother than a lot of games from the past few years
1:04:50 young link impression
MVP
Legend of Xelna: A Link to the Present
Lol I like the cane of Bryan, and Eric reference. I used to watch my older brother Bryan play when we were younger. Childhood memories!
i cant unsee the cowboyhat :
yeah, i know, i said that out loud when it was mentioned

25:15 Ackchyually L and R can also be used for cycling between closed range and far away when viewing the map.
that was a very good young link impression lol
Whaaaaat, holy fuck! I, honestly, had no idea that elder guy was a bald elf, I always saw a dude in cowboy hat. I mean, the kid you chase down with the boots in Kakariko is wearing a cowboy (ish) hat, so I just never questioned it...
This changes everything...
Hard trick comes up
Xelna: Skips hard trick because of marathon safety
Andy: I'm disappointed in you
48:57, mario shows himself in the portrait painting
Awesome couch, great run!
Best game of all time
a hard on race between Xelna and Jadin needs to happen! gods of lttp...
favorite game of all time murdered it
The pit so gentle❤
Lol, 10% boss 90% explosion! Funny and true.
52:00 I always open the bottom left chest. To me, its always have a heart piece.
Now I am just waiting for someone to believe that the center hole in moldorm is "treasure"
The thing about Blind is that the tempered sword WILL NOT kill him any faster.
Watching this run made me realize I don't know the plot of this game even though iv'e played it a ton of times
Nice run, all the bomb jumps and the spike part 1:11:50
Made Moldorm fight look way easier than it is
Chris Houlihan donated at 14:00 omg
Probably not the same one lol
Jomez j unfortunately XD
***** lmao imagine it was. And his donation message was "Stop by my cave whenever you want guys"
John Xelna!
so it turns out for most of the run i didnt realise that the runners name was xelna
i though they were just parodying 'zelda' as a joke in the donation messages lol
38:07 JUST ACCORDING TO KIKIKAKU
Can anyone link me to the moment the announcer does the Young Link impression?
+TlouMac 1:04:50. I really hope Edobean does more of these, she's so much more fun than most of the other commentators.
djpheeze That was frickin' adorable!
ikr!! i loved that!
28:50 - LIES AND SLANDER!!!
Also, "Sherlarshelarsh" >w
Haha that a Cappella killed me haha
Patty is a fucking gem
1:23:48 I'll leave this here and go away for a while
Nice video :)
27:22 cool, donation from one of the Team Meat guys
ANDYS ON THE COUCH HI ANDY
I can't unsee the Cowboy hat....
1:09:57 Ice Palace boss done in 9 seconds.
Sonic the Hedgehog, Legend of Zelda, and Super Mario Brothers, are my top 3 favorite franchises in this order.
As someone who really enjoys this game, I loved the speed run.
I am confused about one thing though: What’s with the whole “and kill the animal’s” thing? I don’t get why that’s so funny.
Same here. I don’t understand the reference at all.
It’s referencing something in Super Metroid. When you are finishing the game you have the option to save the animals before you are done or you can bypass them and end the game. It’s slower to save them which is why they typically don’t in speed runs.
@@lnkmstr1046: Thanks, I did not know that. This was the first time ever watching a speed run like this, so I obviously see this as an inside joke.
Can the bomb jump in the ice palace be done in US version? Im thinking yes since I pulled off the bomb jump trick in the skeleton forest dungeon
MrE399
Yes, you can do this on the US version.
Sahasrahla isn’t bald but he is wearing a hat. In the manga you can see he’s wearing a hood similar to links but semi skin tone to his own.
Moldorm IS my favorite boss
She really is a fantastic announcer. They should bring her in every chance they get.
10:56 that crack on the wall on the left anyone know if there is anything there? it drove me crazy as a kid.. i always wanted to know whats behind that crack if anything.

Really? Thanks man, mystery solved after 22 years :P
had the same thing. i figured it out years later that you can go back there with power gloces from a grave.
A link between worlds looked at this game and said I want to be that
What's the music at 0:05
I wonder who's behind the monitor sometimes.
0/10 didnt catch the good bee
LOL!!!!!!!. "Fun fact about Kiki... in Japanese Kiki loosely translates to.. Kiki"
Anyone knows the names of the commentators?
At what time and how is the boomerang obtained? I must have totally missed it.
whats with the animals?
At the end of each GDQ event, there's a Super Metroid run, and people donate and vote whether to save or kill the animals at the end of the game.
thank you for the answer. I cant believe I dont remember animals at the end of super metroid. Metroid is in my top 3 favorite franchise.
They are in a hidden room in the escape sequence. It's ridiculously unlikely to find them without a hint or weird chance. (Obviously your comment is 4 months old so you may already know this.)
If this is the Japanese version, why do the credits at 1:52:00 roll in English? Weird.
Why he doesn't get the lamp at the beginning?
It’s slightly faster to get it in the chest after you save Zelda.
On the last gannon, i think I remember that if you dont run to be right by him after he teleports, he will stay put. Like try to be as far away from him as you can and he stays at his first port i thought... am I wrong?
He'll always teleport after each attack and there is no way to know where he'll show up.
right, but I think you can avoid him immediately teleporting back to back if you stay as far away as possible the first time and don't run toward him when he appears, i think there is a buffer of a few seconds after he appears. i dunno seemed like i remembered that, maybe not
28:22 how the hell come no matter how many times I tried it, it never worked??? Why was it impossible with me!?
What is that save the animals all the time😀
I don’t understand the inside joke from the donations that most say ‘Kill the animal’s’?
What’s that in reference to?
Does anyone know what video is he talking about in 1:30:34
quick question which they probably mentioned in the begining, idk. But if it's 100% completion, why didn't he raise his bombs and arrows capacity. also does this game have a wallet upgrades like uhh... is it minish cap?

What did Andy do in the Ice Palace?
+NoToolsNoRules 009221 wow, that must have sucked ass
What is the run where they will either "save" or "kill" the animals?
Super Metroid, at the ending of the event. Is a tradition in GDQ.
the donation counter for chrono to hug marle was excactly 666 at 33:02
patty is too fkn funny
i don't get the whole "kill the animals/save the animals" thing. Can someone explain?
+Davey wavey Super Metroid was an upcoming speed-run. Throughout the game, there are friendly animals you find that teach you certain abilities. +EvilEclipse Thanks for the explanation :D
And the WR is 1 min 41 secs? Woah that's fast :0
As a general rule, if the title doesn't say otherwise, in-bounds glitches/zips are OK, but going out of bounds isn't. the treasure chest rng apparently can be manipulated. the digging game apparently has a 1/8 chance after digging 25+ holes.
I always get confused at the different runs for this game. I am assuming this run is 100% glitchless. there are other 100% runs for this game that use EG or other glitches right?
Are none of these Zelda speed runs in English?
japanese text is slightly faster
@@emorr747and lots of glitches in the Japanese version that don’t exist in the English version that make running in Japanese way faster.

What does this "kill or save the animals" means ? :D
ThePseudoEphedrin in super metroid i think you can choose in the end if you want to kill animals or let them live
It's a bid war between killing and saving animals at the end of super metroid. Choosing to kill or save has no actual effect on the outcome on the game, other than the time. Not saving them ("killing" even tho you don't actually do anything other than not rescue them) saves I think 21 seconds on a run.
If you save them you get a tiny animation at the final cinematic where a small (8 pixels?) purple dot leaves the planet at the same time as your ship.
