'SOCA RUMBA' CON TOWER OF POWER & DAVID GARIBALDI: No conocía esta canción, gracias por subirla. Es primera escucha y por el título me sentí atraído... La Tower de Oakland es portento del Funk...
Que hermosa está esta Soca/Rumba... Tower Of Power iba desde el funk bien agresivo y crudo hasta esta forma latina estilizada... David Garibaldi es un poeta de las baquetas 🥁❤
The drum parts early in the song, interesting take on a clave. Usually I hear all three notes on the 3-clave, but the song uses only the second note of the 3-clave. Very compelling way of introducing the clave feel for this piece. Other than the title ofc.
Yeah. The beat I think you're talking about is commonly referred to as the "bombo" note. It always falls on the 3 side of the clave figure on which much afro-cuban music is based. Cool stuff.
Does anyone know the Paiste cymbal setup here? Especially the two smaller crashes and the one right next to the ride. I cannot seem to find good information about it. I'm sure the one to his left is a Sound Creation New Dimension 18" Dark Crash (according to cymbal wiki and my eyes). And the smaller two could be 14''.
This song is amazing. I used to play along this track with the drums removed (from Garibaldi's book The Funky Beat) without hearing the song with drums first, so to me a groove with snaredrum on count 2 and 4 at 3:11 or 3:28 sounds more natural and thus better. Not to say that David that a bad job here of course, I just prefer it 'my' way. ;)
We got my man w slicked back his hair and ripping four separate keyboards, 2 percussionists that are on THE vibe, guitar player who just dropped his kids off at elementary school before this session and picked up the bass player who is probably skipping his college class to be there, sax player who could be Ron Jeremy's younger brother who is doubling on some zelda flute type shit and then on top of it all the man garibaldi is stone cold. One could even say icy. The expressionless look on his face is a result of the transcendental meditation that takes place when such grooves are laid upon one's ears.
It caught me off guard, but it looks like a dodgy cut from the editor. After the first click you hear him say '1', so it's just 4 1 2 3 4 2 2 3 4. Hope that helps!
I think kennybarnes has got them; Peter Horvath p (?), (Benny Rietvield b, Norbert Stachel s, Michael Spiro perc (conga), Jesus Diaz perc (timb), Ray Obiedo g)
I love it when David has that serene look on his face. Then I know everything is under control and right with the world.
Hahahahahahahahaahaha!!!!!

TheMrGerrie were you trying to go for a shuffle feel?
This is based on Songo, not Soca... however there is a change to calypso on the bridge.
Norbert!!!!!!
I have PT.1 & 2 on Vhs.-Super..
Years later after asking for the sauce at the kitchen table, it has finally arrived.

Gabriel Bickerton 4/4 the kick drum is on the "an" of 3
Gabriel Bickerton lol this comment had me rolling it's in 4/4 dude
I found it a bit of a headfuck too! I knew it was in 4/4 but David's placement of the kicks put me off the scent: I couldn't find where '1' was!
He's just putting the the kick on the "a" of 3.

Dax Corcoran Yes.
