Professsor Agree! let's see the numbers on fire balls that went of in Germany probably zero. I stick to Japanese cars low maintenance cheap parts and don't attract rodent nest.

Alvin Shen What was your problem?? My family has always had Mercedes and we've never had an issue when dealing with the company... Did you purchase it through an authorized dealer or an outside seller?
TiTanSKiZlz Well if the car is purchased from an authorized dealer and not an outside seller, there are warranties and extended warranties plus regular maintenance checks after so many miles or a certain number of months... Maybe some cars may have had electrical issues... I haven't had any issues, but that can be easily fixed as opposed to a car just randomly bursting into flames and possibly burning the house down. And it's horrible that BMW isn't even taking any responsibility for any of these incidents... And what's even more striking is that it's happening to not just one model of one year of car, it's happening to all of the models, with a variance of years in between them all... People are losing not just their money spent on the car, but also their homes because of this... That is so awful! I will never buy a BMW after seeing this.
not that I validate that answer, but after doing maintainance work in a shop, you'd be very surprised how many cars, cheap, nice, new or otherwise have rodents or evidence of having had them. I've pulled more than one dead rat from air filter housings on Acura or Lexus's...

The main question is WHAT ignited the fire? You can have a room filled with soaked gasoline; as long as there's no hot source the room is not going to just catch fire. So there's got to be some kind of electrical issue that cause the ignition of the fire.

In Detroit, BMW used to mean "Break My Window;" today it means 'Burn My Wheels.' This phenomenon looks really familiar: Ford recalled about a quarter of a million 2001 and 2002 Ford Escape SUVs for Master Cylinder fire risk. Brake fluid is not only highly corrosive, but also highly combustible. So if it leaks onto wires, it causes a short circuit, a spark, and a fire. Does this sound familiar?
a quarter of a million Ford Escapes? You've gotta be joking. They recalled MILLIONs of vehicles, from the Escape to the F-150, and even the "Exploder" (Explorer) for the same exact problem. XDDD The problem was due to the brake fluid pressure switch/sensor. It is fed with power continuously, even when the vehicle is shut off, hence the reason for the "spontaneous" combustion. (catching fire after being parked for like, days...)
picardenter yep. When you read this you should compare a new 3 series to a Audi A4. Audi has a full virtual cockpit, google maps heads up display etc. sure the beemers looks sporty but come on at least 20 cars caught on fire??

ALL BMWs that caught fire are models after 2005... the 90s and early 2000’s models were gems. The E39, E46.., I own both and cant be happier. Its because after 2005 BMW replaced all of its brilliant German engineers with Indian and Arab engineers to comply with political correctness laws in Germany. Its true. Look up who is the head designer for the E60. He’s an arab. So if you will want a BMW, only get ones before 2005. Thats all.
Roddy Rod Not as much as you? Where did you study? Oh yeah. You didnt finish HS! Get out of here and next time put a disclaimer on your education before you post.
A lot of new high end cars like BMW's have auto-leveling magnetic suspensions. Even when the car is off they work to keep the car level and stable. Its possible that a faulty magnetic coil in the shocks could have caught fire. Which would make sense considering the people said the smoke was coming from underneath the cars by the wheels. If the car is off they might not be getting the correct voltages and could overheat and burn.
So I did about 30 seconds of research and found out a few things that ABC left out: First, they neglected to mention that one of the cars burning that they showed, was a 2008 BMW X5. This car was recalled for electrical fire issues in 2011 and 2016. Also, they forgot to mention that Ford has had many more of these problems over the years. There was a recall for F1-50s in 2015 for the same exact problem. And that's not all, Ford has been having these issues for almost every year for the last 10 years. So this is not a BMW specific problem at all. It's not just Ford either, Mercedes back in march of this year, 2017, recalled over 100,000 cars, for risk of spontaneous combustion. Do I think that this is a targeted attack at BMW? I mean, I like to 'think' I see the good people so I'm going to say no. HOWEVER, it is disappointing that whoever did this segment at ABC did not do much research into the wider topic of vehicles spontaneously combusting due to electrical fires.
Here are my sources too, which seem to be absent from the ABC report's claims above: www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2017/05/spontaneous-combustion-parked-bmws-get-news-11-close/ www.theclever.com/20-dangerous-cars-with-the-highest-risk-of-spontaneous-combustion/ www.edmunds.com/car-news/2015-ford-f-150-recalled-for-fire-risk.html
The thing that I noticed was that these fires seem to happen in areas where the climatic conditions are warmer than Germany, particularly the amount of heat from the sun. I suspect that the problems are a chain of events rather than a single component failure. I would first look in 2 areas. An electrical component (most likely a capacitor) drying out its dielectric layer and shorting. This could simply be due to the location of the control box being exposed to heat from direct sunlight for prolonged periods. Modern fuel injectors work at more than 2000 bar. Therefore fuel trapped in the pumps can reach enormous pressures after the engine is stopped and the solenoid valves are closed. Bosch injection pumps open a valve to return this fuel to the tank when the engine is switched off. If a system did not have this function, or it failed, high pressure fuel could bypass the seals and come into contact with electrical components within the injection pump. High pressure injection was previously only used on diesel, but when used on petrol engines, the fire risk greatly increases. Bosch largely work with Audi VW in developing these systems. It would be interesting to know whether these cars suffer fires, or whether it is when other manufacturers incorporate their components into their own models that problems arise. I am personally not a great BMW fan. Their emphasis is on performance, rather than comfort, safety and economy.
I had a bmw e92 328i for almost 4 years. Loved the car and babied the heck out of it. But I had 3 different recall issues on the car mailed to me, one of them including the car randomly catching on fire. So I got rid of it and had no regrets.
Wasn't there a Mini Cooper in Japan or something that this happened to? There was something discovered related to an engine component being made of magnesium. I vaguely remember reading that some freak electrical thing causes an arc that actually IGNITES THE MAGNESIUM PART. I wonder if that has anything related to any of these fires?? Most seem to come from the middle of the hood where that part is...
I have a 2016 BMW Z4... it's been in the shop for 46 days 10 trips in 9 months that I've had it. 4 electrical issues and 2 mechanical issues. Trying to get it lemoned out now to get what I should have gotten to begin with, a Lexus.
Had this happen to me today but I caught it as it was happening. Was just coming out of the walmart and started loading my groceries. My 335i started smoking so I popped the hood and noticed the alternator melted through the plastic air duct. Either my issue was different or the issue is caused by a leaky oil filter housing gasket causing oil to get onto the timing belt and into the alternator which causes it to fail and heat up due to friction on the belt, idler bearings and the tensioner. Mine did catch fire but I quickly put it out with a slurpee and will be able to repair it in my driveway...most won't be so lucky.
This doesn't really make sense, not a lot of information is presented here. I'm not saying cars didn't catch fire, but for so few cars with such a broad model range it doesn't make any sense that BMWs are all of a sudden ticking time bombs. Some of those cars had over 200,000 miles and were 15 years old! Why would they explode all of a sudden when it worked just fine for years? Did anyone think to ask if these cars were properly maintained? I could see an untrained/uncertified technician installing something improperly resulting in a fire hazard. All it takes is an aftermarket alarm system with the wrong type of wire.
@@porsche928s5 this may be true to a somewhat large extent (I drive Japanese), BUT, they WORK. 98% of the time across the board they work because they are engineered to do so. It's too bad the cars with soul are not engineered to work. They used to be, and very well could be but that wouldn't be profitable.
RothBeyondTheGrave Japanese cars are Great if you need to get to work day after day with no hiccups I’ve had a few and they worked for the most part, small things began to break once they get to be about 10, but for the most part even a w210 Mercedes will be just as reliable and much better to drive and cheaper to buy
Going back down memory lane. In 2001 I had a similar issue with my brand new 2001 X5. At the time there were other fires with the X5, one where the vehicle was parked inside the owners garage and it almost burnt the entire house down. Anyhow the issue was the AUX fan switch. When the car is off and the engine reaches a certain temp the AUX fan in the grill of the car would turn own to cool the engine. That was back in 2001 models. Me knowing about the issue I had a bottle of water and put out my fire but I disconnected the AUX fan switch and drove to a dealer for a replacement.
But why are BMW's only catching fire in the US? I'm from Germany and they are all around Europe but we haven't had any incidents like that here ... I'm more than glad that nobody was injured or even killed, thank god
I'll bet it is an electrical fire. BMW's are mostly push starts now but that is not what is unique to causing a fire... what is unique about the newer designs is that after you are parked, the first press of the push start/stop button stops the engine.. however it does not turn off the power. Some BMWs will not allow you to lock the car with the remote unless you press the push start/stop a second time which supposedly cuts the power off. This feature has ALWAYS annoyed me as if you are already 30 yards away you must go back to the car to turn it completely off. I'm sure some people might create a habit of saying "fuck it nobody's gunna break in I'll be back" and leaving the power on eventually creating an electrical fire when the battery becomes weaker possibly... but tbh, I don't know shit so this is all just a theory.
Sometimes I just press the power off button, walk away. Yes the double press makes it completely shut off, but the car will eventually power off after left for a few minutes, even if with a single button press.
it's pretty obviously not BMW's fault if an e46, e90, and f30 would all light on fire, if it was a manufacturer problem it would be model or at least chassis specific.
I might have an idea. I think its the fuel hoses rotting. Just got myself a 3 series. Its around 15 years old and when i get back home smelled a bit of gas. I imedietly opened the hood and there was a spray of fuel coming from fuel hose very tiny leak but think about it. It comes out like spray and since pressure remains in lines for sometime after you turn off your car it can reach to a hot part with good air fuel mixture. Just a thought but for me i say it was a close call.
You may also want to check the wiring, I've seen some older BMWs have brittle/cracked cables. The worst one was a 98 E39, its big alternator cable just flakes off exposing the copper inside
1:30 "When a car is off and it catches fire, you obviously have a problem." I don't think you need the "When a car is off" part, so "If a car catches fire, its a problem, regardless of on/off state."
Probably a turn signal related issue.
I think this issue may be flap-jack related.
Dalton Chanch LMAO
NOOO I WANTED TO SAY SOMETHINGG ABOUT TURN SIGNALS FIRST
Dalton Chanch not enough blinker fluid to cool down the outercooler for the bulb
Dalton Chanch Im Threw
bmw blames consumer negligence: failure to maintain proper level of blinker fluid.
i cannot afford 2l blinker fluid bottle every day, 1 bottle cost 10 pounds

And that's not all, Ford has been having these issues for almost every year for the last 10 years. So this is not a BMW specific problem at all.
It's not just Ford either, Mercedes back in march of this year, 2017, recalled over 100,000 cars, for risk of spontaneous combustion.
Do I think that this is a targeted attack at BMW? I mean, I like to 'think' I see the good people so I'm going to say no. HOWEVER, it is disappointing that whoever did this segment at ABC did not do much research into the wider topic of vehicles spontaneously combusting due to electrical fires.
Here are my sources too, which seem to be absent from the ABC report's claims above:

Their emphasis is on performance, rather than comfort, safety and economy.
my car 2001 bmw 325ci cought on fire just 2 weeks ago it was parked 2 hrs
jose01ification *cough Poor maintenance *cough
Quit making excuses for a crappy car.
I had a bmw e92 328i for almost 4 years. Loved the car and babied the heck out of it. But I had 3 different recall issues on the car mailed to me, one of them including the car randomly catching on fire. So I got rid of it and had no regrets.
I love bmws but this is shocking to watch because I never known my favorite car would burn
same
Harry Jiang fucking same.
Escaladeandlucariofan 979 they don't theirs a economic war against Germany by the u.s
MERCEDES BENZ lmao
Lol economic war.
Anybody that says japanese cars dont outlast German cars with less electrical issues is in denial!!
You may be on the right track. BMW does own Mini, so there's possibly relations between the engines.
Flakey Flakes McFlakenson Theres a MINI right here on this video at 1:57. BMW makes MINI.
I have a 2016 BMW Z4... it's been in the shop for 46 days 10 trips in 9 months that I've had it. 4 electrical issues and 2 mechanical issues. Trying to get it lemoned out now to get what I should have gotten to begin with, a Lexus.
Big
money
wasters
OMG! This JUST happened to me!!!! My 2009 335i was parked underground for 16 hours, and there was a mystery engine fire! Car was destroyed!
It catches fire when it finds out the driver actually uses the turning signal.
It's standard practice for BMW to deny any fault in their cars, be it premature failure of engines, transmissions or anything else.
It's because of accumulation of dry leaves.
This just happened to my 2007 328i
While we were all asleep.
Do I let my insurance handle it or contact BMW directly
All BMWs should now come with a built in sprinkler system and a fire extinguisher thats how we can solve this world wide epidemic!!
Simply dont buy BMW anymore. let them rot
My seatbelt shocked me when I touched it. Can I sue BMW now?
Frau Bluucker says, "Ja vohl!"
Gamer257 im sorry but is that even possible. there's literally nothing that connects to the metal part but fabric
Keep telling peeps these cars are far from reliable, but they say i am crazy.
firing on all cylinders
BURN MY WALLET
BMWs as well as Mercedes are CRAP, just ask any mechanic!!! Why would you want one??? :/
Jerry Ryan there over engineered endless money pits.
No one will ruined my dream.I dream of owning one.
Vandy5000 It could be just bad electrical work done by someone. Short circuits or something.
Happy I went with the new Mercedes instead
Mercedez are money pits, and unreliable just as well
@Roshiar Fares just Japanese, American cars are junk as well.
Fawn Del Maibalz Japanese cars have no soul
BTW I ended up owning my 2001 X5 4.4 for 14 years. Selling it in 2015. GREAT automobile and I got my full money's worth.
THE ULTIMATE BURNING MACHINE!
But why are BMW's only catching fire in the US? I'm from Germany and they are all around Europe but we haven't had any incidents like that here ... I'm more than glad that nobody was injured or even killed, thank god
thats why you drive Audis
The use of cheap non genuine blinker fluid is a likely cause.
cars that are known to randomly burst into flames: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Tesla and now BMW....
I will not be buying any BMWs
IEATU95 Or occasionally, it will catch fire apparently lol Better to be safe than sorry I suppose.
it's pretty obviously not BMW's fault if an e46, e90, and f30 would all light on fire, if it was a manufacturer problem it would be model or at least chassis specific.
That's typical German engineering for ya.
My mother moms BMW did the same thing she was inside I'm grateful she was able to get out in time.
I am taking out the battery with me when I park.
Ben Geek biggest mistake...BMWs have been known to malfunction when the battery is tampered with...An electrical issue of some sort.
LMAOO
binalfew mecuriaw you have to reprogram the Computer on some of there cars in order to accept the battery.
BMW is getting that supercar street cred!
That's why you have to keep on top of refilling the blinker fluid.
It's a kind reminder to upgrade built into the system
Parrot Kabbarrot thanks for reminding! just got the car this week. i guess i need to move wire inspection closer on my checklist.
ClevelanDriver Highly doubt that 1 year old fuel hose rotted
ClevelanDriver WOW 😃 I think you're right , you might have something there , good thinking 😉
1:30 "When a car is off and it catches fire, you obviously have a problem." I don't think you need the "When a car is off" part, so "If a car catches fire, its a problem, regardless of on/off state."
