I don't know what it is, but this tune gives me "Level One" vibes of like an alternate dimension in a game. The kind where you've already beaten the game, and find an unlockable alternate route where everything feels the same, but the difficulty's ramped up hardcore. So basically you get this jonty subtly panic-inducing vibe of "Better pick up the pace~! This is just the beginning! You're gonna have an awfully bad time if you can't even hack it here~!". I love it. It'd be the perfect kind of music for an aggressively-fast platformer, like sonic. Also, for some reason, I feel like it'd be a really good tune to play on your alarm clock specifically for mondays.. It just has the perfect mix of "Come on, get up, it's a new day!" and "Things are gonna be painful and hectic, but HEY, keep your chin up, you got this!"
dude did you use any kind of system for working out the chord progression from 0:42 to 0:52 ? its legitimately one of the craziest ive ever heard. like it kept subverting my expectations for where it was gonna go and yet every change feels satisfying??? it feels like a cardiacs chord progression a little bit. also like, im curious, is the woodwind trilling in the second half a sample or a plugin? it sounds super realistic.
Not on this occasion - sometimes I map things out on a 12-point circle of fifths and find fun patterns, but in this instance it was just me trying out all sorts of combinations until I found one I liked. They're samples, from UVI's IRCAM 2 library, lovely and crisp!
It felt familiar to me... probably because of a very specific _a capella_ piece I sang as part of my community college vocal jazz ensemble: ua-cam.com/video/vkJ2-TKwCUc/v-deo.html
To me the progression itself doesn't sound that crazy as much as clever, the "perceived root note" has a very predictable progression, but the chords built around it is what makes it special. That's probably also why it sounds so satisfying, the upcoming "root note" is likely where your brain expects it, just not how it expects it. Also I absolutely love the sound of the melody right after, it's probably the most happy go lucky sound I've ever heard.
It's so weird. The music is clearly happy. Yet it sounds... off. Like, the music isn't unsettling, nor creepy. But it doesn't feel right. This is a compliment btw
