You don't have to fool all the people all the time. You only have to fool some of the people some of the time. That's enough to make a profit. Ask any priest.
And they also come from the freudian idea of psychologically manipulating our primitive instincts through propaganda. Coincidentially the person who invented modern advertising Edward Bernays is related to Freud.
It's only as powerful as people are gullible and ontop of that allow themselves to consume ads. I think most people do avoid them like the plague and there is no reason to ever think "Well I was told how bad by this company so I will buy fall back on consumerism to fix it!". It's not a powerful, it's a sense of gullibility.
There's a thin line of being honest and most ads crossed that line long ago. Making product look better than in real life is really like them selling you a lemon car after showing you a completely different car. I dont know how they weren't sued yet .
I was just thinking about this... Even when I was a child, I would analyze commercials based on how much fun I actually had with the toys being advertised. Guess I saved my parents some money lol
Dear west, please stop paying for highway robbery prices for some western brands to teach them a lesson. Some brands like Rolex have prices that are just immoral for what they are. All you have to do is stop, and they will be forced to change.
Putting into debt that would arrest us to go to jail to be enslaved, possibly owned by private companies that made the commercials that we "need" it. A spiraling cycle.
Even a kid I thought commercials were stupid. I didn't care about being popular then anymore than I do now. I particularly hated cereal commercials and still do. Commercial are bait.
I'm old, slow and desensitized, but as a youth marketing was like a science, it worked. I must have wasted a ton of cereal because I wanted the toy in the box, I don't like cereal. And that carousel display with toys in stationary type stores, I would be crying and yelling while being pulled away.
False marketing is not an inherent property of ads. The sign of a grocery store is an ad telling its a grocery store, very useful, instead of a sign saying free sex and when you get there, its just a grocery store
Ads show something that looks amazing and gives you a something that is not recognizable to the ad. Bait and switch but some how its legal. Or a product will some how make you a better person but really their just trying to sell a crappy product for a high price. Ads are like the police, they pretend to be your friend and relate to you but really they just want to give you a fine for being you.
The book "30 Days to Stop Being a Shopaholic" by Harper Daniels is good. It uses a mindfulness and meditation approach to get to the root. It's fun too. It's easy to overspend without the right perspective of self.
+ashley beaumont I have never understood why they call it Native advertising. The only part of it that gets past Adblock are the sponsored articles. I don't understand why people fall for those. The internet has been around long enough that people should understand that they must verify what they read online. To all insurance companies stop spend millions on ads and pass that savings to the customers. I choose the company im with because my mother and father did business with them and they got what they paid for.
The information I share is valuable and worth your time to research and validate because it is not a conspiracy or related to mental health issues.. There are many specific ways our smart devices and machines can invade our privacy. Sure, the main culprit is your internet browser and the functionality of how it works and behaves with your OS and network, but there are other factors involved that involve sensors or microchips installed into your devices or hardwired in the operation of the pins and functions of the chip. Our devices use Motion sensors: Gyroscope, gps, accelerometer, magnetometer; multimedia sensors: camera microphone, speaker, fingerprint, barometer, ambient light, proximity, LiDar sensors. These sensors have the ability to interact with ultrasound or other radio frequencies. There is a real threat to our personal privacy and other factors related to our private lives that need to be addressed and prevented. Especially if they are law enforcement or researchers researching society for sociohealth or economical reasons. Our privacy can also be exploited by wifi signals or the communication towers that are located everywhere in our cities and countrysides. These have dual uses and invade our private lives, not only are they use these radio bands as radar, they can utilize psychoacoustic and neurosciences to invade our behaviour and attitudes to influence our personality. Our problem lies in the technology that invades our privacy through our smart devices and wireless connectivity. Understanding cross-device tracking and uBeacon/iBeacon technologies can aid in protective measures, but these are only beneficial to a point because society has oppressors and opposers to our personal wants and needs that also utilize the technology. Also, another issue the idea of allowing the wealthy to control and have these technologies to gain a competitive advantage. It allows for these families and individuals to always have the power or the ability to limit others from achieving their dreams or personal goals in life. Anyway, there is paper evidence on how specific technologies work that I found. Use a university library to seek these papers out or other methods to find reliable research sources to identify your need-to-know knowledge base. Imagine the privacy complications with this technology. Apple is affiliated with wealthy individuals who seek to exploit human behaviour for profit. In a capitalist society, profits mean everything, so privacy is not respected. Market segmentation is are pieces of valuable information that can identify you personally. Geographics, demographics, psychographics and behaviour models can predict What you like, dislike, may like or potential behaviour or throught patterns that become almost 100% accurate based on this data. Pair this data collection with A.I., artificial intelligence, the methods to gather this information becomes almost impossible to prevent. Computers can talk in their own languages and modify the data to imitate similar data when read or analyzed by a trained engineer. The ability to gather information by radio bands and through other forms of invisible light is something we need to be cautious of. Our personal privacy is a way to turn our attitudes against us, and also manipulate and shape us to a specific system that wants to control and increase their control of who and which families will continue to earn the most wealth. Hard to read but it is true in all regards. There are satellite systems and communication towers that also can be utilized to interact with specific wavelengths in giving off by our smart devices, cables and L.E.D. lights. The speakers and microphones of your devices are also prone to becoming tools to invade our privacy. Sure the technology in this video is fascinating and has many legitimate applications, however, it is something that bypasses our personal liberties to personal privacy. Adds pay for the internet to be free. Adds pay for television and a lot of things people take for granted in the capitalist society we live in today. What people need is to understand that any add is faking reality to sell you a product. They are not your friends, they are not coming with solutions for your life, they are selling a product that you might need or not. Also it is time for school to reach this new kind of subjects. From financial math to advertising strategies. The curriculum in schools seems to follow a very iluminist approach of the reality, but we live in the post Cold War era.
There's a distinction between advertising and manipulating. The latter is what this video is adressing - how companies use psychological tricks to make us spend our money. quaqmireful I didn't buy one thing made in China. Had someone get a sweatshirt for the son, sent my mom a package of meat...oh dear lord I hope it wasn't grown in China! Nah, I love my mom. I barely left the house this month except for groceries. I barely drive my car, I'd have to have somewhere to go and I can justify why not to go somewhere. Too many people on the roads here, suicides, other stuff to keep me from wanting to shop for crap. My vacuum broke, took it to get fixed, too expensive so bought another vacuum made in USA that I will take back as too powerful for me and ate a piece of my floor lol! And now my husband just fixed the 'broken' vacuum which makes me believe the store didn't want to fix it, wanted to sell me a new one. Now it goes back and I am not sure they deserve my business now. Ads can be intrusive. However without getting the message out there. There's likely many services you may want or need you'd likely never know about.
That's not the same as the point being made here.
But is it not just as likely that there are even more services that most people do NOT need to know about?
