Great video. I was actually about 300 feet from you doing a family photo shoot that same evening. I almost came over to you to geek out on the equipment but then decided against it. This vid popped up in my suggested tonight.
Hi Griffin! Always enjoy your content! One thing you might try for the “over/under” test is to shoot a grey card or color card to set exposure, then stop up/down on you lens to get a precise measurement. Then in your software you can bring it up or down to match middle grey and know you’ve balanced it out correctly. Also, I’m sure you know this, but in your “overexposure” test for the Red, when you pull down the ISO on the raw footage, you are actually reducing the total range of highlights. Even though Reds don’t have a native ISO, you will still see a reduction in highlight info as you lower the ISO. As in, Low ISO = more shadow info: High ISO = more highlight info (above middle grey). Hope that helps!
Hi Griffin, thank you so much for all of your hard work and countless hours of writing/filming/editing to put these fantastic mini tutorials and info grams of valuable information and news together for all of us who are interested. It is truly appreciated. Thanks!!!!
Another great comparison. We use both of these cameras for motorsports shoots on the regular and one thing I dislike about the Komodo is the cropped 120p. It's not unusable, but the C70 just destroys it. In fact, if I have to shoot 120p race footage...I reach for the R5 at this point. You might like that opposed to the 1DX. That said, I think these cameras pair up really nicely.

I've done tests of Canon C300 mk III, and there's some difference in the DR between recording in RAW vs XF-AVC Intra. I suppose C70 is pretty much the same as to record on C300 in XF-AVC. It's like in RAW the c300 mk III clips at 6.2 stops by Canon's spec sheet, and that's exactly what it is on practice. While setting the camera to XF-AVC recording - it clips somewhere at +5 stops. Also, XF-AVC has a lot of denoise happening, compared to the RAW from same camera. And when I say a lot- it's like HELL LOT. C300 mk III is def. not bad at low end of DR, -4 stops def. shows some noise, which you'll usually find at -3 stops on MX Red's and Alexa in RAW. But going deeper is going to show a lot of noise in red and green channel, and huge color shifts with some smearing at -5 stops. Speaking about roll-off, if you're using Davinci Resolve - you can utilize the Color Space Transform tool and go from C-Log2 to Arri Log-C to Arri Rec709, and have a smoother roll-off. That extra stop in the highlights in the Komodo is actually a B&W image (usually using the blue color channel, which clips last). It doesn't have any color information, and you can see that in your waveform monitor. The nice thing is, if want, you can colorize that luma range to whatever you want (sky blue in this case) and by giving it a little saturation, you can really make it look like it captured 14 full-color stops of dynamic range.

Hi, Griffin. I like your video review very much and subscribed. A question here: I saw, you use Atomos Ninja V to record videos from Canon C70. Why? Isn´t record C70 the same characteristics you have shown, using the own recording system? Thanks for answer
Unsure what c-log you shot the c70 in, but the highlights on her hair are way way clippier and more video-y than with the filmic rolloff of the komodo, esp after LUTs. Komodo def wins for pro narrative/commercial work where raw quality > all and slo-mo and af not really necessary, c70 for run n' gun, one man band, doc, and music vids
Agreed. Clog 2 is what I used. Unfortunately because the Komodo doesn't have built in ND's, it wasnt a perfect exposure match the c70 was slightly brighter causing the highlights to clip more and appear to have a worse role off. To me they feel about the same in highlight roll off after grading the footage.
Where do I even start with this one? :D Why is this even a comparison? The C70 kills the Komodo in pretty much everything. Global shutter for sports is cool but as you said, if you film stuff you benefit from a global shutter you also benefit from slow motion.. Great comparison btw
@@joelduncan5973 on the image look. Yes. On the facts, no. Anyone who says the C70 isn't better in AF, battery life, audio solutions, slow motion or low light.. well, I wouldn't even know how to respond :D
I'm really happy to see other Orange County filmmakers making content. We should collab! I am hoping to rock a Canon C70 this year :) been shooting on a C100 for a really long time and I am ready to move up! You got me excited!
Griffin I can't decide what cam to get. I'm a one man band with a shotgun mic sitting on my camera. I shoot all handheld with a 70-200 stabilized lens. I do long shoot days where I hate dealing with anything technical. I don't need autofocus. Bmpcc 6k pro, komodo, or c70?!
So, I been following your channel for a sec now. Mine is the power of drew, and I shoot on the Canon C70 as my A-CAM and the Sony A7s3 as my B-CAM however the Sony is just not cutting it for me. I dont get those butterflies like I get with the Canon. That said, I been thinking of pairing the Canon C70 with the Red Komodo now, using the Red as the A-CAM and the Canon as the B-CAM... what are your thoughts on that?
thanks, Griffin. I don't know if I've thanked you for your content on this particular video. Question: do you think the C70 LUTs might work on 1DXM3 RAW footage? or have you tried it yet?
Thanks so much Ron! I appreciate you bro! The luts work on the clog 2 from the c70 and in my opinion they look great...I may be a little biased though since I made them 😄
Thanks///.. have you had a change get a general impression of autofocus in low light and people wearing masks? I imagine that the R5 is probably a bit better
Thanks Bryan! I think the autofocus feels the same as the c200 and c500 mark ii. I haven't done in depth testing yet (check Carlos' channel for that!). However, the R5 is quite a bit better IMO for autofocus
I never use the Canon luts because of what they do to skin tones. The Arri Lut + some saturation always works a million times better for me with C Log 2 and looks like how the first generation of Canon Cinema cameras looked (aka good and effortless and not weird).

@@GriffinConway hullo...wondering...don't know if you've done any videos on best shutter angles with the c70 and when to use them as in under what conditions etc
Great Job Griffin I think C70 is fantastic The Canon camera works much better in most scenarios Canon cameras for reliable autofocus and excellent handling It helps a lot in the real world In the past, red cameras had significantly better images But this gap has been reduced to a minimum in 2020 Maybe just the raw image capability and global shutter is a special advantage of RED KOMODO
I enjoyed the test and don’t really have issue with any of it except 1 thing, the Canon variable ND is horrible! Putting it on Komodo really hurt the image out of it. If you ever get to repeat the test or similar, do not use the Canon Variable ND. Nice work though!
Thanks Scott. I agree the canon vnd past 4 or 5 stops is pretty bad. I referred to your videos before i shot with the Komodo actually. Thanks for sharing your work. For my test, I had to use what I had available and that was the best option. Glad you enjoyed the video though 🙏

Hi, as someone with a newly acquired C70 and new to C-Log2, it would be great for a tutorial on how you are metering exposure. I've seen that Log2 is traditionally exposed two-stops over, whereas some are saying under expose etc. with the C70. I did a talking head shot today and the electronic meter was telling me I was two stops over but the LCD with an internal LUT applied looked spot on. Later, When I dropped in a LUT, the image was two stops under exposed. So confused... thankfully I was able to push and pull in post and it looks fine. I just subscribed to your channel and I'll pick up your LUTS too. Hoping you can help with a tutorial for us NOOBs. Thank You!
Very informative, thank you. Although the background music is very annoying and distracting. That music taste is not a testimonial of "quality" and that's a shame. Its in contrast with the reasonable good content. You might look into that aspect...
1dx mark 3 vs c70 - clog 3 vs raw... hard to see quality from UA-cam maybe a link to your website with video download to compare? Also product videos vs shooting documentaries and how each camera works for each type of video. Thanks!
Would you ever choose a Komodo over something like your C500ii? I own a C70 and love it but need a little more juice for some upcoming shoots. Would you recommend Komodo or c500ii?
I think the Komodo is a great camera with a really beautiful image that is flexible in post. However, it is not the right camera for me. The c500 Mark ii offers full frame 60p which I use every single shoot (especially with boxing), built in ND’s (which are great for run n gun), built in audio which speeds up post for me, and a rock solid pl mount for mounting cinema glass. For me, that makes it perfect for what I do 👍
Nice Video but PLZ>>> COULD U COMPARE C70 to A7s iii, also Plz add [Low Light into the test and also] add info to How the clip Playback in ur computer for both camera plz...
That's not more overall DR, just more highlight DR based on the middle grey specified by the manufacturer. Komodo seems to have a stop more in the highlights (apparently only for desaturated highlights) but Canon c70 has ~2 stops more in the shadows.
Did you test any ef lenses on the C70? Did you notice that you can’t change autofocus speed? No one is mentioning it and it’s kind of a big deal if you’re looking to slow it down for more organic looking focus pulls.
I used multiple ef lenses on the c70. The ability to adjust af speed is determined on how old your lens is. Not all canon ef lenses will support that functionality (like the 50 1.2), but this is the case on any canon cinema camera with these lenses
It's a good point though! Most people do a rolling shutter test where they shake the camera like crazy, and the only time you would see that is in extreme action or a lazy vlog. I think he was making the point that you shouldn't buy the red for the global shutter if most of your footage looks like this: Slow pan to the left Which lets be honest, the majority of people do. Even Hollywood has very few situations with fast pans even.
@@jambononi well, even the worst case of rolling shutter wouldn't show on this kind of pan. on the other hand, many fast moving subjects or actions don't need crazy camera movements to reveal rolling shutter. like swinging a hammer, fast cars, trains, running children, sports etc...
Like I mentioned at the beginning, it’s important to understand I had the Komodo for one day to test everything out. I had other obligations that kept me from shooting more footage. As with all my UA-cam reviews, I try my best given the resources I have. My goal is to provide value to everyone who watches completely for free so they can know more about the gear they use and achieve better work. Unfortunately I didn’t have a football team or a nascar driver handy, so I had to do what I could 😄 though I did mention the usefulness of the rolling shutter and how some would value that
They would both be great options. Do you usually work with a crew or by yourself? Do you need slow motion? Without knowing those answers it would be hard to recommend one vs the other
@@GriffinConway I work by myself mainly and currently work with 60fps slow motion so 120 isn’t necessary. I love the look the RED footage has compared to the c70 from all the sample/test footage I’ve seen on youtube (your videos included).
Alan madhu I love using b raw, I think it’s one of the best codecs out there. I’ve ran into a few issues when editing with it in premiere but I love the flexibility it gives you and how easy it is to play back on your computer. I’ll see if I can get one in for some testing!
Oof. That crop on the Komodo is gnarly. It seems like they rushed that camera out onto the market. There's plenty of other cameras out right now that do a much better job at a fraction of the price. (C70, FX6, A7Siii, BMPCC6K)
Different cameras for different uses. It’s definitely not the best if you need 4K 60p. But it does have a great image and the size price and codec make it an attractive offering for some
So having the C500ii, just a little nervous about having to get adapt to the c70 to use my existing glass. I heard you only get 60% AF or something like that with EF glass.
coming back here after a long time as I'm still looking at the Komodo once in a while :D I don't get how the C70 seems to have a sharper image than the Komodo. My C70 is soft AF
What lenses are you using? The c70 is less sharp than my c500 mark ii for sure. I actually like that quality though haha. I think the Komodo image is a raw image and it’s meant to be sharpened in post, and for the tests I didn’t process the images with noise reduction or sharpening I just showed how it came out of the camera.
@@GriffinConway all kinds. Using a lot of signs primes. I usually like the soft image but do a lot of clean client work where I also need to constantly crop. Still waiting for a full frame RF cam with at least 6k 🙈 Buying a C500II now probably makes no sense
All of the RED cameras do that. Even their $60,000 Monstro. Most cinema cameras that movie directors uses like the RED or Arri Alexa crop whenever you change resolution size
I don’t shoot Sony. My whole team is on canon and we have established workflows built around it. Also, time is money and if we have to spend more time editing the footage to match our canon cameras it is not worth it. Also, I don’t shoot a lot of 120p so it definitely wouldn’t be worth it for me. That said, both of those cameras make great options for those who shoot Sony or don’t have a lot tying them in to one brand
I am super biased towards Canon as I own C200, R and bought C70 like 9 minutes ago, but Komodo looked better, even with stylized LUT for C70. There is something in the plasticity which is not there for C70.
I'm so confused... after you mentioned C70 has more magenta in the tint for the first time... Komodo suddenly has more magenta for the rest of the video... Like suuuuper hard. Look at the 2 stops under recovered shots. Komodo is soooo magenta. Look at the dress...?!
What other questions do you guys have about these cameras? I will try to respond to every comment on here. Thanks for watching.

Hi, Griffin. I like your video review very much and subscribed. A question here: I saw, you use Atomos Ninja V to record videos from Canon C70. Why? Isn´t record C70 the same characteristics you have shown, using the own recording system? Thanks for answer
Great stuff man, if you wanna try out and compare the Sony FX9 I'm based out of Orange County as well.
Hey Griffin! Great post as always! Please put on your future list an R5 vs C70 video. Thank you!
It’s on the list!
Man your channel is becoming a reference for mi. Keep pushing it!
Thank you!!
Nice Comparison Griffin, have you tested the Canon Speed-Booster?
I have one on pre order and will be testing soon!
@@GriffinConway makes sense. thanks for making these videos, man, grounded, common sense, no fluff. one of my favorite channels
next 1dx mark 3 vs c70
This seems to be a popular choice! Ill start working on this one and get it up in the next few weeks
Where do I even start with this one? :D Why is this even a comparison? The C70 kills the Komodo in pretty much everything. Global shutter for sports is cool but as you said, if you film stuff you benefit from a global shutter you also benefit from slow motion..
Great comparison btw
One step forward. One step back.
Subjective opinion
Thanks a lot for the video, Griffin! Awesome stuff!
Thanks a lot Markus!
Cheers! Nice one Griffin! Perhaps a video doing a project with 1DXMK3 and C70? I have that combo and I really like it! 🙌
Oh and how do you like the c70 joystick and back scroll wheel build quality? The body seems solid otherwise.
thanks, Griffin.
Thank you, amazing we need so many setting and frame rates for production. Even when people claim not to know they still can sense them.
I never use the Canon luts because of what they do to skin tones. The Arri Lut + some saturation always works a million times better for me with C Log 2 and looks like how the first generation of Canon Cinema cameras looked (aka good and effortless and not weird).
Great vid! Then again they always are!
Thanks so much Brett! Really appreciate it!
I have accidentaly thought you were talking about tid... hm... nothing.
Waiting for 1dx iii vs C70... Please.
PLEASE
Coming in the next few weeks!
really enjoyed your videos so far....started watching your stuff when I got my hands on a c70...only regret with the c70 is when the need arises for taking a picture or two...sucks a bit then...but alas i'm a video guy so...ho hum...anyway keep up the great stuff you put out on utube...thanks dude
Thanks so much! Really appreciate the support, hit me up if you have any questions about the c70
@@GriffinConway hullo...wondering...don't know if you've done any videos on best shutter angles with the c70 and when to use them as in under what conditions etc
geez the Komodo 120p legit looks like 16mm film though. soft and grainy but sort of a cool look
Ya the grain is much nicer than most cameras for sure. I just watched your wedding photo kit for under 10k video today. Super good one!
@@GriffinConway ah thanks!
Great Job Griffin
I think
C70 is fantastic
The Canon camera works much better in most scenarios
Canon cameras for reliable autofocus and excellent handling
It helps a lot in the real world
In the past, red cameras had significantly better images
But this gap has been reduced to a minimum in 2020
Maybe just the raw image capability and global shutter is a special advantage of RED KOMODO
I agree!
Been waiting for this 🔥
Awesome thanks for watching
I enjoyed the test and don’t really have issue with any of it except 1 thing, the Canon variable ND is horrible! Putting it on Komodo really hurt the image out of it. If you ever get to repeat the test or similar, do not use the Canon Variable ND. Nice work though!
Thanks Scott. I agree the canon vnd past 4 or 5 stops is pretty bad. I referred to your videos before i shot with the Komodo actually. Thanks for sharing your work. For my test, I had to use what I had available and that was the best option. Glad you enjoyed the video though 🙏
@@GriffinConway ha, appreciate that. I completely understand about shooting with what you have. I get comments about how it would be better if I did x over y. I don’t have x. :) it’s still a worthwhile test and I appreciate you doing it. I don’t have e a c70 to test :) - but I think it is a cool camera.
Great review awesome working with you ! I get my Komodo tomorrow so let me know if you need it for any comparisons!
Great review as always. Looking forward to picking up a C70 to pair with our C200. Time to sell our 1DX Mark ii that has been collecting dust.
That will be a great addition to the c200! They pair really well together.
The C300 Mk III shoots 4K 120p in RAW with no crop and it looks amazing.
I am aware of this. I haven’t shot with it though
Hey I notice you are using a right angle adapter for your hdmi to atomos, I want somthing like that that works with 60p.
Subscribed. Great job girffin.
Thank You!
Really curious if you ever found a solution to this. I'm struggling with the same problem!
Curious as well
Like always, a solid job man
Very informative, thank you. Although the background music is very annoying and distracting. That music taste is not a testimonial of "quality" and that's a shame. Its in contrast with the reasonable good content. You might look into that aspect...
This is the comparison I was waiting for. I'm getting one of these cameras for sure. Too bad they're both really good at what they do. 🙃
You are right! They are both really great cameras, built for very different uses
Hey, I was wondering if you used any soft filters when shooting yourself in the studio or is that color grading? If filter, whish one? Thanks!
Black Pro Mist 1/4
Loved this! Super informative!!
Did you black shade the Komodo? That will eliminate the noise
Can def see the komodo has more dynamic range when looking at the blown out hair on the c70 shots that were back lit.
@@GriffinConway thanks man. I realized my 70-200 f4 is gen 1 and that’s why it doesn’t allow for changes.
Cool review. Digging my C70 so far. Just that Lcd screen in full-on daylight is a bummer. using my Small Hd Focus to supplement.
Ya for sure. Almost all cameras need an external monitor. But at least the image and ergonomics are solid!
Komodo image looks so much better. I couldn't get past it. Your lut made a big difference on the C70 though.
How does this guy not have 100k subs
Because his name is not Kevin Conway. Boom...roasted 🔥😂
What lamp is that attached to your desk?
Great comparison 💯
I think for the price the C70 is just so much better even for myself doing narrative and music video type work
Awesome comparison Griffin
Thanks Gaston!
Awesome stuff! Keeping my C70 pre-order after this.
Thanks for watching Dave!
Great comparison video, love it! Would love to see 1dxmk3 vs c70 from your point of view!
This one is in the works!
the rolling shutter test is hilarious :)))
It's a good point though! Most people do a rolling shutter test where they shake the camera like crazy, and the only time you would see that is in extreme action or a lazy vlog. I think he was making the point that you shouldn't buy the red for the global shutter if most of your footage looks like this: Slow pan to the left
Which lets be honest, the majority of people do.
Unfortunately I didn’t have a football team or a nascar driver handy, so I had to do what I could 😄 though I did mention the usefulness of the rolling shutter and how some would value that
Great vid!🔥🔥
Great info, Griffin!!
Thanks James!
Good stuff griff!
Thanks Kev!
If someone is shooting a fashion film, which camera would be the best option? First time cinema camera purchaser...
I'd like to see a bmpcc 6k comparison with these, And your thought on bm braw
Alan madhu I love using b raw, I think it’s one of the best codecs out there. I’ve ran into a few issues when editing with it in premiere but I love the flexibility it gives you and how easy it is to play back on your computer. I’ll see if I can get one in for some testing!
@@GriffinConway no words for that quick replay
Black magic raw is the best
Oof. That crop on the Komodo is gnarly. It seems like they rushed that camera out onto the market. There's plenty of other cameras out right now that do a much better job at a fraction of the price. (C70, FX6, A7Siii, BMPCC6K)
The filmic image quality is beautiful though. The Sony's don't offer that
@@dna8269 I agree. But the Blackmagic and Canon's seem to have a much more filmic quality than this camera.
@@JustinMyersPhoto thanks for the info!
I will definitely test this soon as I get it in Fraser. I have it on pre order.
Justin Myers thanks a lot Justin! I appreciate you bro!
coming back here after a long time as I'm still looking at the Komodo once in a while :D
I don't get how the C70 seems to have a sharper image than the Komodo.
Still waiting for a full frame RF cam with at least 6k 🙈
Buying a C500II now probably makes no sense
@@GriffinConway congrats on getting married btw 😬
good content bro👍🏼
Yikes, I can't believe the Komodo crops when shooting 4K60. Non-starter.
If 4k 60 is your main goal then the Komodo is probably not the best for sure
All of the RED cameras do that. Even their $60,000 Monstro. Most cinema cameras that movie directors uses like the RED or Arri Alexa crop whenever you change resolution size
I’m curious to see how the canon speed booster works on the Komodo because then 4k60 would be back to about super 35 with the crop.
buys a 6k camera to shoot 4k wtf
Not sure what someone expects from 16 bit raw from a global shutter in a $6k camera 🤷🏻♂️
Dude... if you shoot a lot of 120p... you should use A7siii or FX6. The sigma converter works very well
I don’t shoot Sony.
Griffin I am also based in orange currently at Chapman dodge ! If you ever need an extra hand filming I am happy to help!
Shoot me a message on IG. I’ll keep you in the loupe when I’m doing another test @griffinconway on IG
Forget the cameras, is that your girl bro???!!!
Yes
Very informative video thanks 🙏
Thank you!
Great comparison!!!!!
Awesome content. Well done
Thank you!
I am super biased towards Canon as I own C200, R and bought C70 like 9 minutes ago, but Komodo looked better, even with stylized LUT for C70. There is something in the plasticity which is not there for C70.
Hacking this UA-cam algo. Your channel deserves the views
Thanks!
Just got the c70 and love it? Thank you for a Nice video.
Its a great camera. Thanks for watching!
Nice video dude
Thank you for this! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
