It is really positive to see how Ian is so competitive for himself to get the skills right yet he gets so excited for the person he is coaching to get the skill right because he is also a supportive teammate.
Being competitive but still trying to lift up your competitors will always provide the best results for everybody (you included). Being competitive is no fun if it's not a competition. The fun comes from the challenge, which means your opponents need to be the best they can be.
true, but ian himself said that he's very competitive (no surprise that elite competitors are that way). stuff like this tends to just become a friendly competition implicitly 😋
The funny thing is though that I also did circus for a long time as a child and there it was different, we all had to be precise with it no matter our gender. I'm still offended that men apparently have lower standards for that in Gymnastics haha 🥲

Dude I JUMPED out of my chair when he landed that back flip. Taught gymnastics for YEARS and never saw anyone with any coach get a backflip that fast. And it’s high as hell!
14:01 dude, you landed directly where you jumped from. After that few attempts. In my experience that's the toughest to do among all the difficulties of a backflip for most people. Most people tend to jump far more backwards. One of the factors why you got such a good height there. Pretty impressive.

Wow, David you have so much natural ability for gymnastics, it pretty wild. I know you trained hard to be super flexible and pretty strong overall, but damn, the commitment and spatial awareness on your first ever backflips was insane.
David was brave to just go right into the backflip. Like, he just gathered that fear and did it. And Ian was such a good coach. These 2 were impressive, trusting in their bodies' abilities to do difficult stunts. And the excitement they had for each other was infectious.
I think you deserve a point for the mushroom. Check out Ian's channel and see all the people's he's challenged to try the mushroom. (Easily found in the 'women try men's gymnastics' videos.) They don't even come close. It's absolutely amazing how well you did for a first try.

You should totally do dancer vs gymnast. Like specifically a ballet or jazz dancer. I’m a dancer and I know firsthand that people underestimate how much skill and strength dancing really takes.
For me the take away from watching this is the impressive man that Ian is-and the role his sport seems to have played in that. Goals, hard work, team spirit, mentoring by coaches, and incremental rewards have resulted in an impressive human being. I’d also guess he was parented well.

I can’t believe how quickly this guy learned to backflip. I was a gymnast at SU a long time ago and I’ve never seen anybody learn a backflip like this guy.

I've always said a backflip is 10% athleticism, 10% technique and 80% courage but damn that was learned so fast.
