In this Slay the Spire gameplay, Baalorlord does an Ascension 20 run with Ironclad. First, he gives tips on choosing a path and a starting bonus. I've seen you use berserk so many times effectively. That a free turn comes up and there you are
I don't know why Beserk is so disliked. Unupgraded is almost unplayable yes, but upgraded its like having an energy relic every turn. I often take it.
@@zacharron card draw wasted, doesn't help til next turn, power in play sometimes not great for awakened, unplayable unless you get it on the correct turn (much easier with pyramid)
I think its a lil underrated but it's still really not great
@@zacharron I have taken beserk many times and very often I have barely ever Player it the entire run, making it barely better than a curse.
I like that baalor considers cost reduction cards “energy generators”. It’s kinda like calling the weakness debuff block, which are both good ways to look at that kind of thing
That's how I think of Watcher's wrath cards. If you double your damage, the enemy does no damage to you when they are dead. Eruption is a block card!

i fell asleep at the earlier act 1 floors and i woke shocked to see baalor's act 3 ironclad with 150 HP

after watching a lot of your ironclad runs, i finally got the minimalist achievement, thank you‼️
2 pommel strike+, rampage+, feed+, and bloodletting+. also bought an abacus as an early block plan before i found the bloodletting in act 3

30:05 My mind instantly went to Dropkick + Dolly’s Mirror the drop kick to make an infinite since there would be all of act 2 + act 3 to find rage/another block plan, a decent source of artifact removal, and another shop coming up to remove the writhe

I used to reduce cost of Barricade with Madness or Enlightenment then upgrade with Armaments, It revert the cost back to 2
Brutality + Rupture can be very strong because the Brutality upgrade makes it innate and from there you're drawing 6 cards which makes you able to play the combo surprisingly fast.

I don't understand the disdain for Berserk. Yes, unupgraded it is an impractical power because two turns in a row of Vulnerable is a big price to pay. But upgraded, it's just one turn--the turn you play it on--giving you control and full knowledge of what price you're paying (if you play it at all), and there are lots of turns where the enemy is either not attacking, or attacking with manageable damage that you can somewhat or partially block. Then you get an extra energy per turn for the rest of the fight, at the cost of 0 energy to play it.
If you have Clockwork Souvenier or Orange Pellets, you don't even have to pay that price. Considering that all other +1 base energy per turn options are boss relics with their own substantial downsides (and you aren't even guaranteed to get any of them in a run) or a 3-cost power (Deva Form), having a 0-cost power card give you that effect is pretty nice to have when upgraded.
Then the whole "I'll remove that card first" when he has a 6-damage Perfected Strike in his deck is just...bizarre. Not to mention the fact that Brutality is another 0-cost power that gives you +1 card draw per turn, which synergizes well with +1 energy per turn to play more cards.
I think the thing that makes Berzerk suck is that it only generates energy the next turn, not the turn you play it while you pay for the loss in draw this turn.
It may also be impractical to play it the turn you draw it because of damage concerns and so unplayed it goes into your discard pile to dead draw again.
It's a hard card to start a run with unless you're willing to upgrade it immediately. P Strike, Bash, and Sever Soul were the only damage cards he had here, so a lot depended on what he pulled from the first fight.
Getting another damage card allowed him to care a lot less about P Strike and I imagine what shifted him towards removing it.
But imagine a world where you only have 2 cost damage cards and one of those exhausts the rest of anything you could play. The P Strike is suddenly looking a lot more reasonable if only barely.
Brutality takes up a slot and costs 1 hp per turn
So you play it, then draw the card next turn you would have drawn the turn before if you didnt have Brutality in your deck
After 3 turns it becomes a "net gain" of exactly 1 drawn card
Since most hallway fights only last 5 turns, youre only gaining 3 extra drawn cards at the cost of 5 hitpoints which uh, use literally any other card draw generator at that point.
To be fair he did re-evaluate when he actually did card remove and got rid of the pstrike. However I think he is correct that it was the 2nd worst card in the deck. It was kind of either 'upgrade it or remove it' since brutality in act 1 is quite bad in general and berserk unupgraded is bad pretty much the whole game. The upgrade to berserk is VERY good. Basically makes it go from bad to great especially with retain which he got later with pyramid.
Cool to see a deck that's extremely powerful but in a pretty unusual way.

Xecnar said something poignant in a recent video. A lot of people say (upgraded) Berserk is a bad card because you may end up taking extra damage, but will gladly play Bloodletting multiple times during a fight and consider that to be a very strong card.
That's an excellent point. Sure, there are times when Berserk will result in too much damage to be worth it, but when upgraded you have full control over that and many times it can be played with low or no hp loss (admittedly, it's pretty terrible with Runic Dome, but lots of other cards are too).
I hate to be that guy, but that is an atrocious use of the word poignant. Perhaps the worst I’ve ever seen.

i once used boss swap and it gave me fusion hammer, still haunts me to this day lmao
@@babonjradon’t always think of this swap as a terrible thing. an extra energy is still extremely powerful and every character can still get upgraded cards with apotheosis, armaments, lesson learned, any egg, war paint or wet stone. i used to think swap into busted crown was an instant restart than i saw doom and gloom floor 1 and glacier floor 2. basically what i’m saying is any swap can work out for u and sometimes u just have to play through the run to see how bad/good it will be
In my opinion the relic that doesnt give u gold is way worse then fusion hammer. I allways reset those, its winnable still sometimes but just makes the game very stale.
@@joosthartog1333 ecto is far worse than fusion if you're not already toking or full on pots. there's just a lot shop nodes allow you to do, and losing access to them leaves you with only so many options to alter your deck outside of adding more cards.
