Nikon's Nikkor Z 135mm f/1.8 S 'Plena' strives to be the best light gathering beast

- DPReview’s Shaminder Dulai gets his hands on the new Nikkor Z 135mm f/1.8 S 'Plena', a mid-telephoto portrait prime for Nikon's Z-series cameras. It's meant to be a lens suited for portraits where quality of light, a smooth falloff, clean edge to edge brightness are at a premium.
We’ve used the lens and captured a pre-production gallery of sample images here: www.dpreview.com/news/6204137...

Good to see DPReview is alive and kicking. Definitely a little rough around the edges. While there are some issues with brightness, the audio was the most distracting. Pretty bad quality in the early parts and then quality / volume is changing wildly throughout the review. Keep it up though, looking forward to seeing more of this new style for the channel.
You're spot on and that's my bad. Our studio is mid move and our lavs were still packed away and I couldn't find them in time for our hands on with Nikon. Not an excuse, just want to be transparent with our community. You're right to call it out an we'll strive to improve.
I hope you're not suggesting those other 2 clowns were good quality. Even if production was ok, content was useless = garbage.
Glad you're still going guys, and glad you're not just trying to mimic Chris and Jordan. Just keep pushing your own thing now.
ı thought they are making a joke about copying them. The intro was reminiscent of Chris and Jordan.
Yeah, def. don't mimic them. They weren't good at all, which isn't a personal attack; the videos were hollow and just continuous shallow talk + footage of their faces for no reason.
Looks like a great lens and it will cost plena of money.
great to see you guys back!
Thanks, we're happy to be back!
Nikon: we got a new portrait lens that uses the largest rear element possible on the largest 35mm mount in the world so we could control mechanical vignette better.
Reviewer: lets shoot some wet dogs at the park with it...
could not complete the video past 30 seconds. Let me know when the production quality improves.
I am going to wait for the 105mm 1.4 (or 1.2!) version of this lens! Prefer 105 to 135 for portraiture. Kudos to Nikon!
DP Review TV is alive!!!!!
Reports of our death have been greatly exaggerated 😉
@@dpreview :p. Well, I for one glad to see you back!
Thanks! In all seriousness, we didn’t think the site would be saved so being here today is a blessings. And that’s in no small part thanks to people like you who spoke up about what DPReview meant to you. Thank you.
Love that the channel is still going, fix the audio for the next vid!
Working on it. We're mid studio move and our equipment is buried in boxes. But when Nikon calls and says can you meet to see something new, you show up.
Looks a beast, pricing pretty steep though. Thanks for the review.
a-suh-pherical...?? Not heard it pronounced like that before ;-) looks like a great lens, thanks for the review
Do you know where is it made from ?
Wow, ich hab es nicht für möglich gehalten so schlechte Bilder mit diesem tollen Objektiv zu machen.
whats the music?
Never been to Seattle and I’ve always wondered why people wanna live in a place where it rains so much
I like sunny days 😢
I enjoyed chris and jordans review of this lense...good to see you are still around.. but i followed those guys to you...wish you all the best now im off to petapixel...
焦内锐利如刀,焦外如奶油般化开,让人印象深刻的好镜头。
So DP Review did not go under and is back and still going strong just with new presenters. Ok. Hope they do not go under
"Ph..." is pronounces as "F" is pronounced. As in 'phone'.
Don’t pronounce Plena as if it would have two „n“! It doesn’t. It is pronounced on the „e“ and not the n. I had 10 years of latin in school - I don’t know much, but that I know 😅
Oh rats! Hold on, I’m messaging the Nikon rep who told me how to pronounce it right now to share my shame.
Thank you for the comment - I am also German. Maybe that explains why I had to explain it.
I’m glad you did, I am genuinely curious and want to get it right.
Hey are you guys looking for part time photographers or employees? Im interested?
Look how they massacred my boy! 😢
What's up with the horrible lighting and color?
And what about the sound? My 8 year old boy can record videos with much better sound quality.
How so? Audio was fine for me after the first shot by a stream or waterfall or whatever the noise was.
Wow, it is more expensive than the equivalent from Sony, which is also unique, but of course the price also falls a little over time 😯
This lens is 5 years newer, has more glass, and 2 coatings with a special focus on edge to edge uniform illumination and rounded bokeh vs. the Sony.
@@sarfaraz.hosseini Maybe it's a better lens? But can the customers (including mine) really see it, I don't think so. Top lenses from the best brands are today so good that there is virtually no difference (and that's a good thing), or to put it another way, the difference means zero!
"pretty good" is not something you want to hear about a $2,500 lens
BGM might be killed.
Say Nikon, not Naikon
Sorry, after being around Nikons, using them and saying it that way for 20+ years it's ingrained in me. I think this might be one of those American-isms. Like how we still insist on imperial units while the rest of the work is on metric. Or the whole Zee vs. Zed thing.
Aluminum :)
@@SDulai @henseleric
Nikon stems from Nippon Kougaku(Japan Optics).
The word is "moniker", not "monitor".
Sigh. Hmm. Why do I still bother to look? Nothing against the presenters. All I ask is that they don’t show us how to take woeful snapshots you could also take with a plastic kit lens using a lens like a plena. The Plena is a much more exciting lens than this. Time to unsubscribe from this down market site then. It just makes me so sad. Sigh!
So u just removed Chris and Jordon and then kept the channel alive!? 😢
We love Chris and Jordan, we still (virtually) hang. We caught up with them recently: www.dpreview.com/opinion/4967888352/chris-and-jordan-reflect-on-dpreview-s-past-and-future
Chris wasn't as good as he was before DPR and Jordan isn't much of a help to cinematographers anyway.
They didn't "remove" Chris and Jordan, Amazon fired most of the staff, it was going to close dpreview, until someone at the last moment bought it, but it was too late, Chris and Jordan already sign with petapixel
@@RiccardoGabarriniKazeatari thanks for clearing that.
@@dpreview cool. Just feel for the boys. So Many half cooked reviewers have crossed a million with ease but these two have seen struggles.
I guess so has dpreview. Maybe quality is not always appreciated enough. Thank you.
It looks like DPReview got some cheaper help. A large step down for all parties. The replacements do a respectable job, but they are NOT Chris and Jordan.....
At least the photography is better
I’m not crying, it’s only raining on my face. 😢
They are looking for PART TIME EMPLOYEES. How far the best photography site has come.
Nothing against the sympathic presenter in this video...
Geez, Dave. Let’s say they are newly relearning video and audio production. Very relaxing good personality and yes better photos.
I’m not sure if you’re aware, but DP Review nearly went under this year. The site was due to close permanently until it was bought by Gear Patrol.
I think you should cut them some slack as they seem to be restarting from scratch.
Is Nikon still alive? Why?
Why not? They’ve actually been building up a really nice lens lineup, the Z9 and Z8 have been very well received, they’re likely to sell a bunch of retro Zf bodies, and shouldn’t be too far off refreshing other models with their new processor etc.
Because they’re actually good lmfao.
Going low cost, I see ...
Wow this is quite a step down in quality from the usual reviews. I feel like only one image came remotely close to showing off any of the features of this lens and the rest were complete throwaways. What’s the deal?
What a crap video. I wish DPR all the success it gets in its new life--none.
These stunt doubles are no replacement for Chris & Jordan.
Nikon is desperately trying to copy Apple with the 5x Zoom lens
Get some help
which rock do you live under?
Time to unsubscribe.
Yep...
I just did it...
the flouncers, three!!
It is clear from the rather dull gallery that DPR will need to continue their search for a suitable team to replace Chris and Jordan.
