Hello Matt, I think this is a lens that you were hope for a while ago, if not hoping for thought may well be coming before you started getting your hands on with Nikon. I ream way back i when I was at school on of the maester/teachers let be there zenth and their 135mm telephoto lens to go birding with. Definitely an interesting lens. But also confusing... why make this the "Plena" lens? Are they going to remake any of the other primes as "Plena?" Are they setting up for a larger sensor?
Matt mentions the answer to this in the video. 'Plena' lenses are those 'Exotics' designs, which can _only_ exist in the Nikon Z system. This due to the larger diameter and close distance to the focal plane of the Z mount. IE. one cannot physically squeeze the same level of performance/specifications into any other FF camera system in existence. Magnetically Controlled Aperture looks so smooth at 8:24, smooth aperture changes for video is great - would be really cool if it also allows for a fully de-clicked aperture and therefore full control over depth of field (aka defocus control)?
Interesting new Lens! ...... Doesn't matter how great Plena is, for sure, it is nowhere near your extremely passionate, deeply emotional, and lovely energetic presentation of the Z 85mm f1.2 S 🙂
Yes it is different, I will make a more in-depth video when I have more time to try and understand the difference more. But that extra reach is appreciated, with little impact on aperture, and the differences in Bokeh etc are real. It is impressive. 🚀😀
85mm X 1.5 = 127.5mm If you have a full frame camera put the 85mm on and drop into DX crop mode and you'll have a decent idea of what 135mm reach is like.

Whoa! Pretty amazing, if in your esteemed opinion that it may surpass the now legendary Z 85/1.2S !!! Thanks so very much for this presentation on Day 1.
What a splendid lens! $2499 USD, less than the 85/1.2! I do hope in your in-depth video you have comparisons to the 85/1.2, many of us are wondering how much difference there is, aside from the obvious focal length. Some of us are running the excellent Sigma Art 135/1.8 with an FTZ. Obviously won't be able to match the bokeh to the corners, even if mounted on a native F-mount full frame, but otherwise wonder how they would compare. It would probably be overwhelming, but the Nikon and Sigma Art 105 1.4's are also in that neighborhood, so many fine optics... One question many of us now have is pick up the new Plena or the new Zf, or see what magic appears in the forthcoming Nikon 35 1.2? Will it also be a Plena??? Looking forward yo your review!

Certainly appears to be a beautiful lens. Due to my use case, I use mostly zoom lenses and sold my quite lovely Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG HSM Art lens when I bought my Z9 and sold the equally stellar Sigma 40mm f1.4 DG HSM Art lens when I bought my Z8. But, given the wonderful Z lenses that I've acquired, I must admit looking longingly at the Nikon Z 50mm f1.2, the Z 85mm f1.2 and now the 135mm f1.8. Well done, Nikon!!
135 is a focal length that hasn't gotten much love since the 80's. The 70/80-200 f2.8 zooms became popular and common and reduced the need for the once common 135/2.8 prime that so many people had with their 35mm film cameras. There was a fast Ai version, and the only autofocus version i recall was the AF DC-Nikkor. The DC was a stuning performer but not intuitive to use, and most people didn't get on with it well. If you did click with it, the results were otherworldly and difficult to duplicate with any other lens i ever used. This new Plena variant introduces both the dual motors so close range correction can work in a non-linear fashion, and adding the most recent exotic glass formulae and optical formulae eliminates the need for the poorly named "defocus control" that was a manually controlled correction feature for that chromatic aberration issue that all fast prime lenses are prone to. This is a remarkable achievement by nikon, and i have to appreciate it, but that cost is definitely outside my budget.
Great video Matt and Nikon are completely justifying my loyalty in staying with them for over 50 years! Thank you Nikon 🙏🙏
