Get you a bag of decent soil, then get a bag of perlite, a bag of patio sand, then get a bucket full of little rocks. Mix them all together, *being very heavy with the sand, rocks and perlite,* then use it in your cacti pots. It allows water to flow through easily and dries quickly!! You don't ever want your soil to get wet and hold the moisture... it's a death sentence. Wierd how plants so tough will die so easy from water.
This was a very helpful video,I was given five cuttings, they are about the size as your cutting. Iam going to do what your doing with your cuttings, place in pot with a bit of soil. I am in zone 9 Arizona it's starting to get cool in the evenings. Thank you. I enjoyed the video and your energy!!👍
I was wondering what you thought of using bone meal instead of the tomato fertilizer for your cactus? Jobe’s has a 2-14-0 bone meal fertilizer (meant for vegetables, tubers, flowers and bulbs) with 15% calcium, but it lacks any sulfur. I’m still learning and have been relying on a highly diluted indoor plant food for cacti up until now. I’ve had to repot my Peruvian apple cactus a little late this season after it clocked in at growing nearly a foot a month since May and began to crowd it’s nursery pot. Thanks!
Hello thank you for the video. I have two Mexican fence post cuttings that I am letting dry out for about a week and then when I put them into some soil do I water them at all or no? Some people say to moisten the soil every now and then and some people say to not water at all so I’m confused plz help :)
Thank you for this video!! About a week ago I bought three cactus cuttings. After watching, I’m now concerned about potting, as I do not want them to rot. Even thought they’d be inside, it’s pretty cold now in Georgia. Should I just put them in a pot with a little bit of soil? I can’t imagine they’d live until the spring without anything...right?? I have the same cuttings as the one you were calling San Pedros.
Could I mix in some small lava rocks to my Miracle-Gro cactus soil (same stuff you're using here). Would this help it drain better? I found a very rotted out cactus on the street, so I cut the top off using a sterile knife. I then dipped the cut end into cinnamon as was recommended in another video, I will now allow it to sit and callus for a couple weeks before repotting. Also I did not cut it at an angle because I did not learn this was recommended until after I had already cut it, will this be a problem?
No, it will be just fine. Did you see the cinnamon trick from Ana at Cactus Caffiene, by chance? Lol! But yes, mix in lava rocks for sure!! I typically use little pebbles, but lava rocks are fine. I get a decent bag of soil, a bag of perlite, a bag of patio sand, and rocks (lava rock, In your case). I then dump them all in a bucket, being HEAVY with sand and perlite and rock.
hi! i notice that my cereus peruvianus is soooo incredibly gaunt and dehydrated. im so worried about overwatering but how to I make it so it's juicy again without watering it too much? thank you so much for the video!
I have a question. My neighbor have cactus on her yard growing wily i think. So when I clip it off which part do i clip? Her cactus looks like large ears.
We had torrential rains (for so cal anyway) over the winter and yet my cactus IN the plain straight miracle grow cactus mix (identical to the bag you had) ALL did wonderful ....not sure what the heck you even mean or know re that....my own experience has been to NOT have my cacti in all day long blaring sun ...my cacti are in partial shade and are growing like fricken WEEDS! Go figure right? Many started off as cuttings I stuck in a box for months....they were so dehydrated but just exploded to life when finally potted.....mostly it was the PC clone pachanoi ....my Bridgesii and Peruvian I grew from tiny imported little bare root seedlings ....I don't even know which is which but I am trying to decide if I should cut and replant cuttings hoping the cut bases will pup?? Anyone know? I would be so bummed if I hurt one after three years of nursing them from bare root babies
I have a question, what if the cactus i cut , i put it on the pot directly and then put little amount of water on it. Will my cactus will die? Or i should let it dehydrated on the pot ? What should i do? Please answer thanks.
Would you recommend this same mix if you were potting San Pedro? I have cactus mix and perlite, do you think that would be enough for San Pedro repotting? Should I throw in some rocks or sand?
The heavy rains do make it tricky with a lot of cactus and succulents! Yes, a very fast draining potting mix, that dries out quickly would probably help with that. I have also seen people make tiny umbrella like covers for theirs, and it seems to work well for them.
I prefer sand or gravel, partially because it also looks a lot better. However this guy was pretty heavy and I didn't think sand or gravel would quite do the trick unless I used a ton of it.
I have a 14" cactus similar to the one you planted with the roots. It is much spikier and I usually use tongs to transplant it to avoid all the needles. How would I find out the name of it? I live in Ontario Canada and I usually put it and my barrel cactus outside in the summer in the sun and they seem to love it. They even seem to grow during the summer. They get rained on when it rains and they don't appear to rot.
This video should be titled "NOT SAN PEDRO!" LOL 😂😂😂 My sad cactus thanks you for the info. I repotted my sad cactus (NOT SAN PEDRO!) instead of throwing it to the curb.
I have a Peruvian apple cactus that was given to me rooted but very dehydrated and yellow green. It's started Browning from the base and hardening, anyone know if I should just cut the base off and try to reroot it?
rally is best to use a soil made for cactus and succulents. Regular potting mixes tend to hold onto moisture, which can cause the cactus to rot. Just makes growing them easier to not have to worry about moisture retention. But, you can add perlite, gravel and sand to most potting soils to improve drainage and they will work well.
don tuse any kind with fertilizer pre added. its best to add your own good sh## you need to remove any pieces of wood, leaves anything like that that will decompose into nitrogen. they dont like it! For fertillizer i recomend usIng the brand Liquid Dirt from Utah. its expensive but you will neveR want to use anything else after you see how good it works...its truly pretty amazing, youll notice new growth so quickly !
Oh no - I just checked my cutting and it's rotting! I see a lot of moist even though I didn't water it. Maybe I should have left it to heal before planting? What can I do now please?!
Maybe... i just didn't want much soil around it because when i water there is usually splatter, and it's important this cactus stays totally dry until its warm enough to pot it up.
BTW people are saying that virtually ALL the San Pedro sold on eBay and the US in general is sterile clone "PC Clone" and questionably even qualifies as "real" San Pedro ....looking at pictures comparing US "PC clone" to European and UK examples they DO look remarkably different....wierd huh? ....BTW they will NOT ship even seeds from europe! WHAT THE HELL???
LMAO! I felt like such a moron when I went to edit the video and heard myself calling it San Pedro cactus over and over again! I think it was because I had just done (filmed) the cactus arrangement video that came out a couple days ago, so the name was stuck in my head from me asking people what they thought the mystery cactus was. urgh!
🙋🏽♀️❤Your soil mixture description and reasoning were precisely what I needed. Thank you for keeping this tutorial posted.🏆

I could listen to you say the word "cactus" all day! hehe I love it!
I absolutely love watching this video , and it does help by giving me more idea of how to take care my cactus .
Cool. I have propagated a lot of Peruvian apple cactus cuttings and each one of them have grown. Thanks for sharing
That is very reassuring! Thank you so much!
how long it takes to dryout cut piece od cactus before planting it in pot?

Great grow room! The kind of place to get inspiration.
Thank you!
Yeah, I always mix black cinder with that MG mix

Less is more give it water once a week
Hi!, did your clay pot has holes to drain waters out?
I have a question. My neighbor have cactus on her yard growing wily i think.
So when I clip it off which part do i clip? Her cactus looks like large ears.
Then how long do i have to wait before potting it?
How they doing now? I love the cereus repandus/peruvianus fruit
They look great! I kind of dropped them while moving them outside, so I have to repot them all over again... but they look just fine. lol.
You can definitely put it deeper no steaks needed. Dope videos man
Thank you!
I have bobbed wire cactus cuttings that still have no roots after 2 months. Is that normal 😕
When and how would you pot a Blue Myrtle-Cactus Plant cutling?
I may be wrong, but i remember reading online that bark/wood chips will rob nitrogen from the soil...
Why do yours have minimal spines? Mine has huge long spines.
Would you recommend this same mix if you were potting San Pedro? I have cactus mix and perlite, do you think that would be enough for San Pedro repotting? Should I throw in some rocks or sand?
Same mix should be fine, never hurts to add more sand or gritty substance to desert cactus mix
Where are you? I’m in Tropical FL and cactus dies well here oddly.
Ur right my desert rose cactus s flowers alway rots Bc of all the rain we get in jersey What would u suggest I do the same thing?? Thanks

Top layer of sand would make more sense than stake's for stability...Awesome video though 😎

Rock on !

Why not use a bit of root stimulator???
Because you don't have to
Mixing soil and perlite with bare hands.??.. Outrageous.! You are crazy, man
lol
Hey gardeners get dirty that’s the fun part🤗
Can u use regular pottin soil?

Tropical Plant Party so I can srsly just use any kind of sand abd thats ok?

Cut above the rot, let it dry back out completely. Make sure your soil is very airy and dry. Don't water until well after it starts rooting.
@@frankijupiter9301 Thank you! It worked :D
Beautiful video
How do I know if I need to cut them?
Hey, Edgar! If you notice discoloration at the base, and/or it feels squishy, then it is usually safe to go ahead and cut them.
Loved your video 💝💝💝
Well thank you, Cece!
great cactus potting!
thank you, Denise!
Could you pot up second cactus and not water in?
Maybe... i just didn't want much soil around it because when i water there is usually splatter, and it's important this cactus stays totally dry until its warm enough to pot it up.
They look great! :)
thank you so much!
Great video dude!
Thanks, Sherry!
Thanks,peace brother…
