Good info for a new grower. Thank you. I’ve been buying my microgreens from a local grower, but I’ve been thinking about growing for myself, and if that goes well I will branch out.
I just siged up with hopes of starting a successful microgreens business. I'm very surprised as these costs are very, very reasonable. Most important, they are affordable. This is key as my finances are limited.
Donny I can only say thank you and wish you all the best! You are helping me a lot with my research. Each video there is no time loss, directly to the point, easy to understand. Thank God there are people like you in the world !
Thank you for the advice I’m looking to start to grow in my apartment and sell local but first educating myself before I dive deep this helped a lot 🙏🏽
Great videos, I've watched them all. Would like to see some deeper dives into topics you haven't covered yet. Comparison of initial dry seed weight versus final yields, pricing strategies, etc. Cheers
Donny thanks for all you do. My wife and I are starting our micro greens business and we are so excited. My question I have for your is when do you think your new software will be ready we are looking forward to using it. Best wishes.
im about 6,500$ deep into starting ym business. No joke you're 100% why im starting this. Once i have the initial investment paid off, (hopefully within half a year or so) the cost per tray vs return is absolutely crazy. AND you get near infinite personal microgreens for friends and family. Almost half my cost went into building an insulated shed in the back for weather control since i don't have a garage. that sucked, but a one off thing. It's a lot of time if you want to do it at scale and is no joke a job, just one spread out and super chill. Donny you're the man
Howd you drop that much? I was able to start mine for $2000, I'm capable of growing 40 trays at a time right now, which eventually Ill need more but im hitting the limit on my breakers anyway.
@@DTR89 almost half the cost was building the actual shed. its like 7.5'x8.5'x7.5' so i can fit 3 racks in their until i have to expand. I didnt just buy a shed because they're like 3k and uninsulated. I had to buy lots of things though, 120 tray X10$ or something a tray is already another 1k plus 15 grow lights at i think like 50$ a light or something, dehumidifyer, indoor heater, fans, lots of tuber ware yada yada yada. Lot of one off expenses that are reoccurring assets, like the trays. Somewhat heavy upfront cost, but at the end of the day if it goes under im only out like less than 10k, the bigger loss would be the time i've dedicated to trying. Seeds are actually pretty cheap though. I'm not even buying biggest bulk prices and spend probably less than 4$ a tray on dirt and seeds, often like 2.50$ but i'll organize my numbers soon. if you're making a minimum of 25$ a tray... well do that math.
@@silviap.4853 i replied to another dude with that. I'm not big yet but my scale should already allow for 30k in revenue annually if my really really conservative estimates work out
Love the videos and I'm about to take the leap. When you buy seeds does the label tell you how much by weight to add to a 1020 tray? I also live on LI. Thanks
Great video. This was more helpful than many others I have seen. One question i have, do you know how many trays you can get out of that soil bag? the 3.5 cubic feet. Thank you
Hey Donny, not sure if you can help me with this. I saw a bunch of videos from different sources. I found yours really with an amazing content congrats. My question is: What about growing microgreens without soil. Meaning with water and something such as Hydroponic minerals for the seeds? I saw a video comparing microgreens from soil and from water and I could not see the difference. My interest on that is basically to reduce the waste generated from the soil after every tray change
hey very good question am aslo doing lots a research on this topic i would like to know on average how many grams does one tray produce? And how much approx would one tray be worth market value? thanks
Hi Donny, Love you content a lot. I do have a question for you. When we sow the seeds per tray, I understood from your videos that we shouldn't be sowing too many or too less seeds, now, would you be able to tell the quantity of seeds thats to be used per tray ? Size of the seeds will obviously be a factor. Even then, would you be able to guide me here ?
Hey Donny, what size racks do you recommend buying? I’m sure the space you have is a factor but we plan on growing in our basement as well that has a fair amount of space. Wasn’t sure if there was a preferred size based on the size of the lights which I have noticed are around 4 feet long.
so where i live you can buy microgreens in the store for 1,39$ per 75 grams (2.6 oz). Would it still be worth it to sell my own microgreens even though i would have to sit around the same pricelevel as otherwise nobody would buy from me?
Great vid! Could you please make a video about how you sell the product? I mean do i need to get some license to be able to sell these onlne for example
Hi Donny. I am growing Alfalfa Microgreens at home. My medium is coco peat and I always have problems with mold. Do you think I am using a wrong medium?
I got sunflower seeds from mumms and they were HORRIBLE. They grew all deformed, didnt germ well, and a lot of the leaves looked funky, they tasted great though.
@@DonnyGreens I just tried mumms once to see how they were, I get from true leaf and never have issues. I'll check out those seeds though they must be good.
I live in the mountains of central Italy. Winter is long and temperature can go 20 below. Summer is upto 40 so a test to choose which to try and grow?? Plenty of land and animals on site. Can Animal manure be used to make good compost for greens. In winter i use in the earth for the next springs veggies. Tomatoes, garlic, peppers, pumpkins, zucchine grow well for instance. I want to start micro as relatively new still here, but our chefs are great ha ha. What would you suggest as good for climate during winter? Yes i could grow indoors on small scale, but im more concerned for mould?
I'd be curious how you arrived at $361? That seems low for outfitting a whole rack. I get that this is not mean just for commercial growers, but a full rack is closer to $500...
dang it! i came here specifically to see what the growing medium was, and there's not one in list, nor one mentioned by name. GAH! you did me dirty... on soil, lol
What do you think about these costs? Does this information excite you or disappoint you!?
It pumps me up personally... 🌱🚀

Excites me. Starting off with growing for myself and if it goes well, expanding into a business model locally

try it out!! nothing is stopping you from experimenting. I use soil. I think the crops grow better and get higher yields.

@Donny Greens can you grow these in a inclosed non climate controlled garage
I've seen sometimes people mention a timer for the lights, but dont specify more or less how long the lights should be on. Or should they be on 24/7?
Try 12/12
Hi Donny. I am growing Alfalfa Microgreens at home. My medium is coco peat and I always have problems with mold. Do you think I am using a wrong medium?
im not the biggest fan of coco but alfalfa is usually grown as a sprout, not a microgreen. I grow those in jars
Holes or no holes in your trays?
Do you recycle/reuse your potting soil?

try 12/12
Anyone growing with the barrina full spectrum lights? How’s it going are they just as good as the sun blaster lights?
plenty are using those, yes
Im a farmer here in Boulder CO
Would love to talk with you about microbes...decomposers or compost teas in use with microgreens
awesome!! i think we did end up connecting
Tray with holes or no holes?
Both
Both in pairs .
He has a whole video on this
Both, one tray with holes inside a tray without holes. This allows for bottom watering
Excellent vid Donny. Still a fan and appreciate everything you do. Also, the recording and editing quality is top tier.
Much love! Trying to upgrade my content right now haha thanks for noticing
Great video - bar the music!

By accounting for a rack, but not filled with lights. I accounted for 1-2 lights I believe to get started, and the corresponding amount of trays
Did you have to get liability insurance and health Dept permits to sell at Farmers markets?
I work through the dept of agriculture, not department of health. Yes I have liability insurance, you typically need that to do the farmers markets
What about eb and flow systems?
Flood to tank not waste
There is no water waste, the water goes in between the trays!
@@DonnyGreens I know I grow them that way for home.
I was asking about your thoughts on a recycled flood & drain systems for microgreens
Thanks Donny God bless dude

How seeds do you use per tray
depends on the variety

depends on variety

0.8 oz
