    I remember visiting Bembridge whilst on holiday in the 1960s and being told / or reading it that the there were beach huts, I think on the St Helen’s side of the harbour, which were made from old converted railway carriages. Maybe these were some of the bodies that are now back in service?

    • @WightWanderer
      @WightWanderer  2 місяці тому

      Hello David. Thanks for your comment. There are indeed multiple coach bodies down the duver near Bembridge/St Helens ... these are ex-metropolitan stock used as beach huts and are still there ... hopefully in the future 1 or 2 will be moved to the Steam Railway. We visited them during this video ...

    My family used to holiday in Hampshire at a place called Nash Farm by Highcliffe. Before they converted to modern holiday huts many of the cottages for summer let were built around railway carriages. This would have been the early 60s.

    gurnard marsh was another spot where old rail carriages were used as dwellings, back in the early 80's my dad lived down there in an old chalet, on the main road there were about 5 or 6 old rail carriages that were used as homes, long gone now, mostly replaced by more up to date chalets and small homes, i dont know where the carriages had come from, but some thought they were old london underground stock, they were quite run down, kind of a joke to the locals, but i liked them

      @@WightWanderer hi, they were located on marsh road gurnard, just put that into google maps and you will see a bunch houses at the bottom of solent view road on the land side of marsh road, i had a look on street view and they all seem to be recent-ish new builds now and couldn't see any sign of the old carriages, i spent a few summers down there in the early 80's so a lot of time has passed now, good luck on your search, steam on

    Hello Jack, do you have on the I O W a central place that keeps all the photographs of all the towns and villages. We have in Hampshire, I asked for pictures of Winchester and they found a picture with a horse and cart coming down the road. You choose what pictures you want and they download them to a disc, there is a small charge. Just a thought. Good video. Regards. Andrew.

    Interesting video. You don`t seem to have a lot of luck with the weather when you film. I admire your tenacity when doing your research. It`s a shame that there are not even any photos left to see these carriages. If you are going to do further investigations into this I wish you luck and will look forward to seeing the outcome.
