A Landmark mini series, l think their are several mini series that had a impact on television, Rich man, poor man, Roots, Shogun and North and South. War in Remembrance was so brutal, tragic, realistic, grand and operatic in scale. I personally believe we will never see a mini series that decipits the horror, realism and view of the second world war ever, so War and Remembrance is the standard.
Watching this back then in the late 1980s in london, and listening to the theme... This theme to the winds of war and war and remembrance for me is world war 2 and sums up world war 2... We must never forget the people who sacrificed their lives at this time...
My grand uncle Jim Naughton served in the British army during World War 2 and he fought in major battles from Dunkirk in 1940, North Africa 1943 to D Day in Normandy in 1944. When he was alive he never spoke about his experiences. RIP Jim
The music for War and Rememberance and The Winds of War were written and performed by Bob Cobert. He did the music for all of Dan Curtis's projects, including Dark Shadows and Supertrain. He also did the music for most of Bob Stewart's game shows starting with the original 1960s versions of The Price is Right, To Tell The Truth, Password, the 1980s version of The $25/$100 Pyramid and others. He also did Goodson-Todman's Blockbusters and That's My Line.
This and The winds of war .. are Truly epic in scope .. top notch cast .. everything .. one of the greatest WW II series / films ever produced …. The books are excellent also
One of the most touching mini series I've seen. This music is so haunting and @loron91423 it make me get choked up just hearing the opening theme thinking about how horrible and yet wonderful the things these characters went through. Highly recommend owning this movie! =)
Pug Henry and his family were a bit like Forrest Gump in that every possible historically significant event of the war seemed to include them in some way. All that said- Herman Wouk did a very credible job in getting his facts correct and spared the reader the melodrama that many other writers would have gleefully wallowed in. The television mini-series were both as well done as one could expect- but Wouk's writing is really the best way to enjoy the experience.
I remember seeing part of "The Final Chapter" when it first aired(I think I was probably 8 or 9 years old). I remember the scene where Aaron Jastrow is killed in the gas chamber(I was too young to understand the meaning of what was happening.). I have this mini series on DVD now.
I remember watching this on TV when I was about 13 or 14, same with the Winds of War prior to this, I wish they would put these on TV again, it's very expensive on DVD.
The theme for "War and Remembrance" (and its predecessor "The Winds of War") was composed by Robert Cobert, who did the music for TV's "Dark Shadows" in the 1960s and 1970s.
The music sounds so lush, sad, beautiful, foreboding, and heartbreaking at the same time. Who was responsible for the musical masterpiece behind the credits?
I agree 100% with everything you said and am surprised you haven't gotten a reply until now. It was composed/written/arranged by the very gifted Bob Cobert who is best known for all of the music on Dan Curtis' famous 1966-71 series 'Dark Shadows'. The opening theme of it, and wildly varying thematic music throughout that was such a crucial part of that show's success, and made it so spellbinding.
Even as a kid, the opening theme music depressed me. It still does now. Beautiful but absolutely depressing ( and didn't have the heart to watch the series).
Right after the attacks on September 11th, 2001, I always believed that ABC missed a golden opportunity to replay the series, given the mood of the country at that time. Winds of War opening: ua-cam.com/video/RNLMhwthkaI/v-deo.html
@BenAliGtor, very well put. The entire mini-series including The Winds of War and the followup, War and Remembrance were very well written in a manner that a World War II novice could glean enough actual history from the background of the story to have some understanding of the war. Similar novels of history include Jeff Shaara's historical novels Rise to Rebellion and The Glorious Cause. Another mini-series was John Jakes North and South based on his novels.
if you get a mult region dvd player or a laptop most of the laptops are multi so you can watch region one dvds like war and remembrance. i remember watching it first time round in 1989 i was 14 years it is a good drama tv series it showed people want happened during world war two and we should never forget it. i bought the war and remembrance dvd collection 4 years ago
A new version on Netflix recast and extended to capture the full brilliance of both books whilst keeping this iconic theme tune is a sort of dream of mine.
, Thing is Phil some of the casting is broken. Although this is better cast and acted than the Winds of War. Only Von Roon, Slote, Pamela and Berel are anything like the book counterparts
Always remember that, except for the men at the top, these were mostly ordinary people, caught up in extraordinary circumstances, most of whom were just trying to survive.
The casting was much better in this second series than it was in the first. I love Ali McGraw but she was a little too old for the role of Natalie (she would have been perfect in the early 70s) and Jan Michael Vincent was too modern-looking for Byron. Jane Seymour and Hart Bochner were beautiful together. Both series had been building up to Natalie arriving at Auschwitz and when it happened the scenes were absolutely devastating. Some of the most harrowing ever shown on television.
Sorry, but I could never get used to Jane Seymour or Hart Bochner playing Natalie and Byron! It was just too much of a change for me to accept. I loved Ali and JMV in their roles and as a couple!
+Faxe90Swe These mini series were shown on tv in the 1980's. Not exactly new. If you don't want to know things about a movie or show, please don't read any of the comments on You Tube. Trust me, I learned this the hard way.
+L Broderick And i wasn't born in the 80's but am watching the dvd box now, and wanted to hear that beautiful soundtrack again (could not be found on spotify). didnt expect critical plot to be revealed on the top comment.

What US Navy destroyer portrayed the USS Northampton in this movie? I served on a DDG-2 class guided missile destroyer (USS Henry B. Wilson), and the ship used for the scenes showing the Northampton looked like a DDG-2 class ship.
Loved this series. One gripe though was I know they wanted to show as much as of the war as possible while focusing on a single family... but they went a little to far with their accomplishments. Just look at the Character of Victor Henry - he was all over the place.. .from skippering a cruiser in the pacific to meeting with Russians in Moscow, to meeting the President.. I mean come on.. :(
Believe it or not, there is probably someone that came close to that character during the history of that war and probably just about anything you can imagine.
Hart was good. But I preferred Jan Michael and Ali as Byron and Natalie. It was hard to get someone else in those roles but albeit they were older than their characters
@loron91423 Bill Schallert, really? I always enjoyed his acting from the professor on Dobie Gillis to Patty Duke to anything he did with his long resume. I watched this series, most excellent as was Winds of War.
Me estremese al oir esta música como era la guerra y la gente que sufria bajo las manos de los alemanes nazis como los mataban con duro castigos y la cámara de gas horror del ser humano Que nunca se repita esto del Holocausto nazi

One of the greatest mini series ever made! Barely surpassed by North and South. But that opening sequence and the music is still haunting to this day!
Like the theme to the documentary series on WWII - The World at War
Watching this back then in the late 1980s in london, and listening to the theme... This theme to the winds of war and war and remembrance for me is world war 2 and sums up world war 2... We must never forget the people who sacrificed their lives at this time...
Yes!!!!!!
We must NEVER forget!
Awesome time in television, War and Remembrance, North and South, The Thorn Birds.
Agree completely Carsy. I was just thinking about the North and South theme too, the other day. Gorgeous.

Great classic series.
wow this soundtrack brings some back some nostalgia!
Rest in Peace Herman Wouk May 27 1915 - May 17, 2019.
wow 104 eh?
I didn't realize he passed in May. I so loved both of the adaptations of his Winds of War series.
An impressive age I have to say.
A 103, almost 104! Wow!

I'd forgotten about this follow-up series to 'The Winds of War'. Hearing the same theme arrangement again - mesmerising. 👏🏾🎼❤

One of the great TV themes, and what an amazing cast! :)
a real classic. they sure dont make them like this today
Actually lol… they do better now, By Far!!!
This is thoroughly beautiful. I've always loved hearing the beauty of strings.
One of the most touching mini series I've seen. This music is so haunting and @loron91423 it make me get choked up just hearing the opening theme thinking about how horrible and yet wonderful the things these characters went through. Highly recommend owning this movie! =)
I love both films, WR and WW, they are a constant reminder to us all that one day, all evil shall cease to exist. . . and that day shall not be long.
Magnificent !!!
will the world ever remember ..
to try to avoid War at all cost.

every time i watched it i cryed my eyes out.
i think people should watch this before going to war.
s
I remember watching this as a kid and it was very graphic depicting the concentration camps. Still a very important cautionary tale to learn.
I remember seeing part of "The Final Chapter" when it first aired(I think I was probably 8 or 9 years old). I remember the scene where Aaron Jastrow is killed in the gas chamber(I was too young to understand the meaning of what was happening.). I have this mini series on DVD now.
I was well old, in my 30's and that is still one of the most poignant scenes I remember. (Tears)
I was horrified to see Aaron Jastrow and other Jews being gassed to death inside the gas chambers in Auschwitz smh
I remember watching this on TV when I was about 13 or 14, same with the Winds of War prior to this, I wish they would put these on TV again, it's very expensive on DVD.
i cry and freezing when im listening to this song. the tw serie was amasina and still is and ARE the war between.
This show was great ❤
Perhaps we all can review this magnificent work and learn from it BEFORE it happens again.
The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history. 😢
From a time , when actors was real Actors and not like today .

awsome mini series and theme song
Beautiful
music from my childhood
I remember my Dad saying that this tune was almost Apocalyptic. In light of world events I can see that.
The music sounds so lush, sad, beautiful, foreboding, and heartbreaking at the same time. Who was responsible for the musical masterpiece behind the credits?

This was when TV was worth watching good acting intelligent scripts and a story to tell, most of what is put out today is absolute rubbish.
A young Al Swergin was in this. Wow.
The whole series can be ordered on netflix!

@loron91423 Bill Schallert's been in everything! And yes, this was the greatest TV event ever.
The Quintessential WWII film.
Yes indeed. An unforgettable film series. And the Holocaust sequences are horrific!.

Netflix would screw it up as Disney did with the star wars saga..
If something ain't brocken don't fix it

This was aired on swedish television in 1991. I remember they warned sensitive people before showing it.
Which ABC affiliate in Sacramento, CA, was "War and Remembrance" on?
What US Navy destroyer portrayed the USS Northampton in this movie? I served on a DDG-2 class guided missile destroyer (USS Henry B. Wilson), and the ship used for the scenes showing the Northampton looked like a DDG-2 class ship.
Who wrote the theme? Is it Bill Conti?
The era of the epic tv miniseries, led by ABC.
Loved this series.
