Got my endorsement back in 2019 but went off to college and then stopped riding, just now getting back into it and my co worker is selling me his 2005 dyna and this video has really helped me build some confidence in my soon to be purchase.
My first ever Harley-Davidson is a new to me '94 Dyna Wide Glide with the Evo 80, only bigger Harley engine besides the Sportster 1200 I will ever consider owning. I like simple and carbureted. It's my first V-Twin had a new knockoff CV carb installed on it that was missing some inlets and ran like garbage with a nasty lean spit. In the process of rebuilding the original so it's running correctly, I may jet it a bit higher if necessary. I found another V-Twin shortly afterwards that I'd always wanted which is a rare 2 year run 1986 Honda Shadow VT1100C which runs like a top but I need to do some work to the cooling system, it has a leaking upper radiator hose which is unobtanium. I will do a full on cooling system redo probably with customer made hoses and maybe just buy a new fuel pump and water pump as spares for now. It has new tires as compared to the 6 year old tires on the Dyna which I will change myself and balance myself. These aren't my first cruiser bikes, I've had an '82 Yamaha XJ1100J MAXIM for decades and I just landed another one that's extremely clean. Got a down payment on it to hold it and will make the nearly 400 mile round trip to go pick it up by the week's end. I haven't ridden much for years and I have the bike bug again hard and plan to tour all over with any and all of these bikes.
Won't ride anything else! My 2014 WIDE GLIDE fits like a glove, handles every curve, twist and turn like a dream, the adjustable suspension, power and glide is just that, WIDE!! Truly the best of both worlds, sport and touring all wrapped up in one! Damn pissed HD decided to stop production but hey, now we own ICONS!
I threw a 200 wide rear and 90/90 front on mine and gained about 10 mph in corners. Fills the rear fender and I think looks much better. I am a short fat fuck, Had to add a decent seat, rotated the forward controls back about an inch, and some drag bars with more pull back than stock for my trex arms and I can crush more miles than my friends on full baggers, get your rider triangle dialed on any bike and its golden. I reached early middle age so maybe I am just getting old, but riding a slow bike fast has gotten to be way more fun than having some hot rod shit with 3 or 4 gears you never see unless on a sanctioned track.
@@Lee-cz7ht fyi it drastically changes the handling characteristics of the bike, turns into a turn much slower, but feels locked into the turn when in it, and again comes out of the turn very slow. Wide glide is no corner monster anyway and I got used to it quickly, but it is different feeling. I noticed a lot more stability and 5-10mph gain in corners that I drive every day on the way to work. Its all subjective, but for me the trade off in handling for a bike that wasnt meant to handle like a dream is worth the look and stance you get from bigger tires, it wont be for everyone, but it put a smile on my face.

Love the wideglide, it's the first Harley I owned. It really does scream American motorcycle. What I hated about it is due to the skinny tire and rake this bike is horrible on the highway and not so great in the twisties. With that said, I would totally own another as my second bike
200 wide rear tire and 90/90 front tire added a good 10mph in corners on my fxdwg, still not a machine for the twisties but its awesome layen back and killen miles on the highway, its about as close to a chopper look you are going to get from a factory but still be very comforable to ride.
I run a 99 WG. Owned a Evo Bagger, and have a 05 sporty...To me the WG is the perfect middle ground. Under 6' and not 250lbs or more the WG works great. Put a engine guard and hang your feet and just ride. Def a good in state weekend bike. Definitely to me it says HD...If you cant build yourself a chopper its as close as you can get to America with the 70's vibe.
I love that orange color Harley-Davidson uses. It's bad ass, and with black flames, I'll bet it looks really sharp. I painted an old kawasaki 650 I had with that orange and it totally changed the whole vibe of the bike. Your lucky, my wide glide is silver and black.

I've been riding most of my life...never owned a harley and not sure what kind of harley I want but this was kinda helpful...what else would you recommend for a nice highway bike?
Great first Harley for a new rider but as a learning bike not the best for everyone. The longer wheelbase and increased rake combined with all that torque might be a little too much for some newbees. That being said the one thing I always loved about the WideGlide was it's chopper-esq looks, just a classy looking machine.
My first bike was a Yamaha V Star 650. It was given to me so only a fool would say no. My second bike? An '04 Fat Boy, whoa!!! What a difference! The second I sat on it I knew what it was about Harley Davidson's that make them the best. The solid and heavy feel made it feel balanced and planted in a great way. And then I started it... I heard and felt the power of that 88 and I realized, this is it, ain't gonna be nothing but Harley Davidsons (I never forget Mr. Davidson) from now on. I gave that to my stepson and now own an '07 Road King. By the way, he burned rice for many years and didn't think he'd like a HD but his first ride on that Fat Boy made him a Harley Davidson man for life! So, next bike in line will be a Dyna Wide Glide which to be honest is I think the best looking bike ever. And the 103 is the Twin Cam with all the bugs worked out.
Its got to be a dyna wide glide like the series Renegade or a soft tail deluxe, for next year. And I'm leaning towards the deluxe with the lowest handle bar set up.
My first motorcycle was a 2015 wide glide. couldnt have asked for a better introductory into motorcycles. im actually trading it in this weekend on a cvo road glide. i agree with everything you have said on this video.

I still have a 2015 Dyna Wide Glide. Will never sell it. You can´t replace it unless you spend a lot of money. It´s a powerful little bike and quicker than you think. If you take care of it , it´ll last 20 years. Much better than any Sportster.
How does the dyna compare to a sportster 1200 as in power? Is there a big difference? My brain tells me the 1200 would be faster because it’s lighter. I have a 04’ roadster 1200 stage 1, I wonder if the difference is worth going to dyna or sticking with the roadster
My first Harley was a Dyna supper guide ,loved it but the Cross Bones is what really cought my eye with the Springer front end ,so that is what I ride now

I changed the pipes with new Vance N Hines wow did it sound great, The bike can move fast and handles pretty good. She is definitely my baby.
I would never purchase a Duna personally. The model was cancelled because there were too many design flaws that couldn't be fixed without completely revamping the bike. My best guess is that the new 2021 custom is it's replacement. As far as apehangers go, the most ergonomic position (speaking from a design perspective) is at or just below shoulder height. When you get above shoulder level, blood has to move uphill to reach the hands which with many will cause numbness in the hands. If you get too low you risk carpal tunnel from stretching the wrist position.

I just purchased my first Dyna at age 60. 2009 Super Glide. Absolutely love it. It’s a second bike to add to the Street Glide. It’s way easier to ride than a bagger. Quicker, corners better, just more fun to ride. My son in law got a 2011 Super Glide last month and we just got back from a 1000 mile road trip. You can do just about anything with a Dyna. Great first bike.
@@FFL-vg9ro thanks for the input my worry is also seat height 27 inseam I keep seeing 27 seat height and that kind of makes me wonder. Someone said there is a Low Dyna?
That is certainly not a first bike for a beginner not by any means. A nice used cheap Japanese motorcycle is a much better choice and you know that. A beginner is not going to drop 10 or $12,000 on a used Harley. Especially something they are going to drop in the first six months of operation cuz everyone does that's how you learn.
Bought my first Dyna for $6500. I’ve seen plenty of of them with the 96ci twin cam for around that price. I stand firm on my claim that the Dyna is a great first cruiser and one that new riders can safely grow into.
@@TheTwoWheeledTeacher that's a good price for a Harley but a beginner who's never ridden a motorcycle who is going to learn who's going to make mistakes is going to fall down the last thing he wants is a $7,000 motorcycle that he is going to drop on the ground. A nice used Japanese motorcycle for them to learn how to ride on and then once they become proficient in their riding skills and have a couple of years of experience under their belt then maybe they can go up to a used Harley. Plus a bike under 900cc has much cheaper Insurance than one above 900cc especially for a beginner.
@@frankmarkovcijr5459 Your comments represent just your personal opinion, and you know that!! I'm a perfect example to proof a Wide Glide is the best first motorcycle / Harley to ride - because mine is a 2014 FXDWG, I'm absolutely happy with her in every sense! Oh, and to mention it, I never dropped her! If you're not able to keep your motorcycle upright, it's just your incapability! But that doesn't mean, that every beginner will drop the first motorcycle for shure! Especially if the first motorcycle wasn't cheap, you will be even more careful!
@@IvoryElvenson any big motorcycle is not a good beginners motorcycle. Like the saying goes there are two kinds of riders those who have been down and those who will go down and that is the truth. Everyone makes errors when they first learn how to ride and that's how they learn. A twin cam needs $10,000 worth of mechanical work replacing everything from the crankshaft all the way up as well as half of the things in the primary in order to make it reliable. I could go on about the shopping list of cheap crap that is in a twin cam motor but there are enough videos at already attest to that fact. If we had tiered licensing horsepower restrictions for new writers your Harley would not even be considered. Your argument is akin to saying 747 is a good plane to learn how to fly on. If a Harley was such a good beginners bike why do they not use big harlie's in beginner motorcycle riding classes. They don't because they are not. You people amaze me in the extent of your ignorance.
Buddy my current 103 twin cam has 56,000 miles on it and I haven’t replaced a damn thing in either case. It’s as reliable as any Japanese build. My first bike was a Dyna 96 twin cam and I did 15k on that bike before getting my street glide. The Dyna allowed me to learn how to ride in town, stop to stop, very well and safely. It also allowed me to do some interstate riding, including two trips of over 1000 miles. I learned how to do oil changes and how to change brakes and brake lines and a clutch cable and adjustment. The Dyna was a fantastic first motorcycle and again, despite your silly arguments, I stand by the claim that it would be a great first bike for anyone who wants to ride cruisers.
I can't think of a worse first bike than a Dyna. I have a 21 Street Bob because I like how stupid it is, but it's horrifically bad as a motorcycle, especially for the insane cost. 17k for a piece of garbage that should cost 7k for what it is is bonkers. The only peoson that would ever call this a good beginner bike has never ridden anything else in their lives.
My channel shows me riding over a dozen bikes and I’ve owned two different Harley’s. I didn’t say a brand new Dyna would have been the perfect first bike. My first Dyna was 11 years old and I got it for $5k. It was the perfect first bike for all the reasons listed above. They’re great first cruisers for a lot of riders. And your Street Bob is a different machine than the Dyna shown here, and if you truly believe your bike is a piece of garbage then you’re a dumb sonofabitch for having bought it. Ride safe and have the day you deserve.

If you get too low you risk carpal tunnel from stretching the wrist position.
Well you are missing out, 3 have 3 bikes, 2021 Street Glide, 2014 Dyna Wide Glide & 2009 Rocker C
The Wide Glide is an awesome bike that i refuse to sell or trade
I've never heard that 1 before?🤔 personally I love these bikes mostly when ya put performance to them. I got a 05 dyna with S&S 106 stroker 120hp n my big bike bagger is S&S DRAGON T143 ON NITROUS 225HP BWHP😉
What design flaws???
@@johnleblanc7573 he is just parroting some shit he watched or read on the internet about the “Dyna” wobble, no first hand knowledge as he says, he would never own one personally…..Worn out mechanical parts from a lack of proper maintenance is not a design flaw, not to mention all the HD touring bikes have the same twin rear shock set up.🙄🤷🏼♂️
@@johnleblanc7573 exactly.i have had my 98 evo fxdwg for 22 years .( its still on the factory belt ) Never had a problem.
Not only for dyna wide glade is the best but dyna super glade too......
I am 50 5ft10 250lbs ..stage 2 and camed our it destroys most stock 88ci tc
So you think the Dyna isn't a bad bike for a beginner not to big or powerful?
Not even close. I had never touched a motorcycle before getting my endorsement. A week later I rode my Dyna home. It’s the perfect first bike.
@@TheTwoWheeledTeacher ok ty. l guess I'm a bit nervous last time I rode I was about 14 a dirt bike . Now I'm 52 and want to get into riding and don't want to ruin that by getting on something that may be a bit ahead of where I should be .Hope that makes sense .
I completely understand. The Dyna would be perfect for you.
But switchback is my favorite and forever bike
Best first Harley is a xl 1200c sportster...biggest aftermarket support out there ...not the best or biggest but best 1st bike
What bars are those?
Love my ,09 Dyna Custom!
And keep the 21inch front wheel
Meanwhile in the UK your first motorcycle will be the required 50cc bike.
That exhaust is 100% stock.
That red would be sick if it didn't have the stupid flames.
1) not a good first bike
2) great 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, final bike
next
False, great first bike. I said what I said.
700lb bikes arent for beginners. Way too many people on the road with no skills on too big or fast bikes. This is why we get creamed so often.
Yeah I just don’t agree at all
@@TheTwoWheeledTeacher not sure Ive met a single one that could pass the basic low speed maneuverability tests. Might exist, but few and far between.

Your comments represent just your personal opinion, and you know that!!
