I think that I may have pointed this out in another of your videos, but I would really like to know how attack choppers like the Hind are used in an escort scenario (for another transport troop choppers or vehicles column). If you do know some info about this, it would be awesome.

Nice thanks! I have question: when you watch vids of Hind engaging in IRL, altitude and range seems considerably more than what I see people do in DCS. IRL, seems like pilots didn't want to get even 500m close. Are we getting too close in DCS?...
Yes. But part of that is rendering and the fact that the human eye can discern stuff better at range in real life. I’m ALWAYS closer than I would be in the real.

I do not know about altitude, I would say that the footage I have seen, of hinds in combat it is always hugging the ground. Another thing I think has to be stressed is that DCS does not model splash damage, making rockets almost useless. To damage anything with rockets you have to more or less hit steel on steel. And you need to get very close to get any effect from rockets. IRL the rockets are the hinds primary weapon, the missiles are just a sead/dead tool to help them survive using the rockets. IRL the hind was designed to have a pre planned target, a semi safe flight plan and ingress to the target. They would keep low until 4-5 km from the target, do a bump, fire all the ATGMs there is time for, and when they reach 2000m they fire ALL the rockets, then they go back home, no loitering. The IRL expected hit rate for the AT-6 ATGMs were not higher then 25% at the most. They were intended to be used en mass during the cold war assaults to suppress high threat targets. At that time when regiments (~12) of Hind would do the kind of attack i described in formation. All in all about 50 AT-6 would be fired at the target area, and even with a hit rate of 20% it was enough to kill any organic AD in the target area.

This channel is just what I’ve needed since I started flying (crashing) the ka50. Weapons systems are easy to study compared to learning a new form of flight, so these videos are infinitely helpful to me
2:00 would most likely cause your blades to cut off your tail, we had that accident over 10 years ago where both the instructor and the trainee perished cause the helo then went upside down, blades disintegrating and the chopper making a sound that is like stuka bomber before crashing. 'Biological traces' were removed from the scrap that remained of both of the crew. Guess that means the young wise guy killed both the chopper and them both.
Yeah excessive aft cyclic is never a good option.
@@CasmoTV From GA helo flying, the first thing I thought about was RRPM overspeed and possible blade separation. Is there something about mil helos that protects them from that?

Thanks for the videos Casmo! It’s interesting to see your thoughts on the Hind with your Kiowa/Apache background. Would love to get an update on the Kiowa for DCS as we had a great series of videos and news stories pop up there for a while but it seems Polychop have gone radio silent as of late. Personally, I’m loving the Hind as an addition to my rotary wing hangar and can’t wait for the Kiowa. The only thing that I can’t understand is how we don’t have some variant of the Blackhawk by now with the success of the Huey. Thanks again for the videos and podcasts. I look forward to each new episode.

Lol i never realized that crabbing was a result of weathervaining. I always thought it was caused by the tail rotor, which was why I was really confused when it would happen in the Ka-50. Not sure how i missed that concept after all this time, but thanks for the explanation

The Mi 24 feels like a WW2 medium bomber in the fight. Slow turns, moderate speeds, stable setups. It feels less like an attack helicopter because you need to avoid hovering. The only reason I know I'm flying a helicopter is because I'm low to the ground and I have a huge fan above my head. It's such a crappy bird to fly, I love it!

Coming from the KA50 to this, yea moderate turns. The slow speeds are in relation to other aircraft that do a similar task like the A10 or SU25. The L39 feels way more sporty than the hind.
@@n4d3m4n I would say that the ka-50 and the hind is very similar in speed and turn if flown at the edge of the envelope. The effect of overspeeding is different and in my opinion much more severe in the KA-50. Both are famous for being some of the faster helicopters there is. When the soviets compared them the only significant improvement to performance in their opinion was the KA-50s better performance at high altitudes and the ka-50s better rate of climb. That was one of the reasons it was not put into full productions.
I would say that the hind turn better then the KA-50, because of how the autopilot differs and is less intrusive. Sure the Hind can't compare in agility of a gazelle or other light helicopter but neither can any other medium sized helicopter. Comparing any helicopter to a fixed wing aircraft is just not a thing.. most warbirds would outperform even the most advanced modern helicopter. Except for one thing, hovering, and being able to go very slow. If you don't get i do not know what to say, stop comparing oranges and apples maybe?

@@CasmoTV i think too. Trim and autopilot seems to need some corrections though. At some attitude the pitch damper start to oscillate, very annoying when you try to stabilize to fire a Shturm.

Casmo, any advice on device settings? I imagine controlling a helicopter with an extended Joystick like a Warthog or a Verpil stick is much easier than say a TM 6000. What should I be looking for when setting a curve? I'm using a tm 6000.
Hey Casmo, Have you played the Game Apache Air Assault? It came out in 2010 and I used to play it on ps3. It is also available on PC as well and I want you to check it out if you can and fly on Realistic settings and see if it feel right to you. To me it actually feels like it has more weight then the helicopters in DCS. May be a Blast for you to try if you haven't
So the retreating blade stall has been happening to me alot online when I've been taking off from the FARP in the mountains. Couldn't understand what was causing it but now I know. Thanks for the videos man, it's awesome content!
Hay, I have a question kinda. It's less about DCS and more about helicopters. You seem to really like the Mi-24 module. So what do you think of the Hind itself? Know DCS doesn't compare to the real world. But you seem to be showing a bit of real tactics in it. So what do you think? Of course it's a 70's aircraft and not a 90's 2000's bird. But still.
Casmo I have learned a lot about flying the whirlybirds from you. Great videos but pace yourself. Some if not most, of us know what you used to fly. When the Apache is released your videos will be in high demand. Thank you for the help you provide us. We all learn from you and several other UA-camrs. DCS should thank all of you very much since some of their modules have steep learning curves. Especially since the initial release of the Ka-50. So I will be locked on to your channel once the hellfires start flinging through the air. I fly with a buddy in DCS and he works on Blackhawks and Apache's. Keep up the great work to help us weekend warriors learn the aircraft of DCS World. But for me it's still called LOMAC.
Thank you for sharing valuable information with new Mi-24 pilots. I do not have previous experience with helicopters and being grateful if someone can share with me how to correctly approach target, disengage and avoid enemy`s cannon fire in Mi-24.

You clearly know your stuff. There are several times I found my hind just roll to the side and straight into the ground. I have no idea why. Now I know. Slowly getting better at the hind and your videos have been a big help.
While I like it, I think you could use a video on the absolute basic principles of helo flying. Also a setup guide for joystick users.

Good solid fundamentals, most of which will still apply across airframes. Looking forward to having acceleration cue, velocity vector, flight path vector, IVSI, horizon line, and TQ, in addition to trim and weapons info.

Not RBS, I’m not sure the aerodynamic name for it, if there is one. You’re changing the pitch so that too much air is pushing through and essentially you start mushing.

Hey Casmo, unvaluable info, as always. Me thinking that going sideways was a bad thing....Anyway, I did some tutorials in the Huey for my native language friends, and I always stress the following: "Don't be Tom Cruise!". Imitating our friend Pete Mitchell hands movements as shown in the movie and trailers will get you in big trouble in DCS, mainly helicopters. We don't have Hollywood magic to protect us from excessive yanking and banking.

I've been having an issue where mid turn the Hind will pitch up dramatically and then start spinning wildly. When I look down at that point, I have a flashling light by my Gyro and the russian lady voice saying something to me that I can't understand. Do you know what could be causing this?

@@CasmoTV I'm not sure, I wasn't paying attention to it tbh. I think it might have been how I was turning. I assumed (I think wrongly) that you mainly use rudder for turns and just use the cyclic to control roll. I tried it with using ONLY cyclic last night and was able to keep the mean Russian lady from yelling at me.
So far I pointed the nose where I wanted to go by using anti-torque and then trimmed lateral cyclic so I had roughly 0° of drift indicated by the Doppler system. Is this wrong?
What’s your trim ball saying? You CAN fly that way but you are less efficient and probably a little crooked in the seat.

Question for you Casmo, I've been flying the drift angle in the hind instead of the ball and it at least feels like that leads to faster flight. Should I instead focus on flying the ball over longer distances? Keeping the drift centered seems to help a lot with accuracy (not a big surprise) and just feels to me like an overall more controlled flight as my nose is pointing where I'm going.
You should always fly in trim but obv when shooting you gotta get the nose on target.
