Thank you This video means a lot to me I only have the pictures from that show backstage Winterland and never seen this and to see my beloved husband Phil Kennemore original Y&T bass player and songwriter . Rest in peace my Love
Hanna Kennemore Hi. From the UK and only recently started listening to the early Yesterday and Today and for the me the first thing that hit me was the quality and inventive bass playing, along with the drumming. Funny because I was in a rock club one night and we're talking way back in the early 80s, just getting off with this real nice girl and we get talking about bands. she tells me her FAVOURITE band is Y&T and I make the worst mistake possible... I say who are they? next minute she's gone. SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! stupid me. We could've got married, anything!! My kids will be glad I said "Who are they? lol
Hanna Kennemore Hanna, your husband was amazing, God rest him. From 1975 - 1978 I NEVER missed a show when they came to L.A. at the Starwood or anywhere they played here. I was in high school at the time and my band called"Centopath" played several of their songs including "Come On Over", "25 hours a Day" an "Road" from Struck Down at every party we played at. We worshiped Yesterday & Today. This upload is a real treat !!! Being a drummer Leonard Haze blew my mind. His right foot sounded like a double bass player and I am a double bass drummer! I thought he smoked John Bonham ... still do. Take care and I hope all is well.
+Hanna Kennemore I attended the show at the Avalon which to this day was one of the most incredible shows I have ever been privy too. It broke my heart when Phil passed away days later knowing how many loved him, I am not talking about fans but those that really knew him. I was at a show in the early mid 80's at the Keystone in Palo Alto, cant remember what song they were playing but I had my head stuffed in the P.A. rocking out. When the song was done your husband made it a point to give me a high 5 and point at me to the audience with a huge smile. We remember the good. :)
Does anybody notice how fucking incredible Leonard Haze sounds here? Fucking A. No wonder he was the leader/founder of this band. Love it the original guys back then were soooooooooooo special! Dave is the Man!
According to Dave Meniketti, Leonard Haze NEVER played a double bass kit. That shit was all done with ONE FOOT. I talked to him about it. Go look for pictures of LH playing a double bass kit on Google.
These guys were phenomenal. The musicanship is outstanding. Their first two albums are hard rock masterpieces to me and Leonard is one of the greatest unknown drummers of all time. He always reminded me of Tommy Aldridge.
i used to see these guys play gigs with journey in the early 70s about as often as i seen exodus and slayer play together in the early 80s im from sf and im 64 years old im just saying
It was 1981 I had just ETS'd out of the Army, went home to Hayward Ca. My brother and I went to a place called the next Stage Saloon for some beers and a couple of games of pool it was early afternoon we were having a blast when we saw people bringing in some band equipment, didn't think much of it but then the place started filling up with people until it was wall to wall people, so much for our pool game we got squeezed right up against the stage, so there we were right in front of the band they did a quick sound check and broke into their Earth Shaker album they were so good and loud that we had a blast listening to them. Didn't know that they were gonna be there, have been a fan ever since!!!
Yesterday and Today became my favorite band after I heard their first album. I was stunned by the drumming of Leonard Haze. He only had one bass drum pedal and made it sound like he had a double, very fast with that one pedal. Leonard reminded a lot of early John Bonham. I was fortunate to see them in San Antonio, Texas when they were touring for their first self titled album back in 1975. RIP the original members of YESTERDAY AND TODAY, Leonard Haze, Phil Kennemore and Joey Alves.
It's amazing to watch this! Superb musicianship! This seriously just rocks! Rest In Peace, Phil Kennemore, Leonard Haze, Joey Alves & most recently, Hanna Kennemore.
I get your comment but to me even today they are still Yesterday and Today. I see them regularly and the current musicians keep the spirit and do them justice. Besides David is still amazing!
@FloodyBoy Randal sorry....I disagree....Dave has been doing this for 45 years....it's y&t and this is Daves life and passion. ....i think most fans want to see that y&t name It's not going anywhere .
Dave's got the Marc Bolan look down for this show definitely, but his smoking playing and singing is definitely all his own! Underrated band by all means
One of the best live bands ever. What's really amazing is Dave hadn't started playing guitar til he was 16 and this is only a few years later... Y&T rocks..
Back in the day my best friend was a keyboard player and his brother a bass guitarist. I met Dave and Joey RIP at a Battle Of The Bands competition in Hayward Ca. It was the mid 70's and they had arrived and won the battle at least once. They were there checking out the up and comers but these cats didn't act like big shots at all. They were even giving words of encouragement to my friends. I got to chat it up with Joey a little and he was this genuine, humble dude which is rare. A great rhythm guitarist that will be missed along with long time drummer Leonard Haze and Phil Kennemore. I also used to always see Dave at Leo's in Berkeley and he was never aloof like so many stars are today. I'm going to try to catch their act in Tracy Ca. soon....
Got to see the original band several times and I still place this band as my top five favourites. Proud to have a lot of the first few albums autographed when my friends and I waited patiently behind the Club in Turlock, CA for a opportunity after their sound check. We were to young to get in those shows though, lol. Still going to see Dave and the band these days when I can.
Seen y and t at mean streak tour in the 80’s forum Inglewood. Thank you yesterday and today for the great music! RIP , Phil , Leonard , and Joey. The best hands down!!!
If I'm not mistaken, this was 1st time Yesterday & Today played a major S.F./Bay Area venue, for Bill Graham. I agree w/Robert, think Journey headlined this gig. All the guys grew up in the East Bay, Joey & I were somehow related,(his Dad's father was a brother of a great uncle of mine, on my Dad's side of the family. I used to see him now & then @ big family get together), Leonard & I graduated f/San Leandro High School, in '73, the band played school dances back in '71- Leonard was our class President in '73, I had him in several classes- he was a great guy, & yeah, he played drums like a madman! Reading these comments was 1st time I heard that Leonard, Joey, & Phil had passed, RIP guys, I'm glad I knew you, it was awesome having a band that was from the same hometown, schools, hit the big-time! Great memory that I'll always have! R.J. aka "Zelmo"
Wow, lovin' the fro on DM! I've seen the current Y&T line up in Santa Cruz 4 times in the last 10 years. I'm always impressed on their enthusiasm and showmanship. Dave still sounds great. They always come to entertain, even at small venues. Wikipedia says they've only sold 4 Million albums, which is hard to believe.
One of the all time great and lesser known classic rock bands from the day. These guys should have been huge world wide, I guess timing/place was off to catch the worlds attention like they caught mine. Again, great band.
These guy's were great! I love the fact that this isn't ruined by the modern day crappy way music has devolved to. The drums made this band! He is fantastic! the lead guitar is great!!!!!!!!!!!
The drums on this were nothing compared to what Leonard did once he started using a double kick. These are my homeboys. They used to play at our high school right before they cut the first album
This is amazing !! Saw lots of great show at Winterland. Vid crew was great. Saw Yesterday and Today open for I believe Montrose, on the heels of the ST. Copped some tunes, covered in a bar and party band. Dave without the V,,,,'Paul later I thought. Rest in peace, Joey, Phil and Leonard.
I used to have a lot of '70s concert fliers, from shows that I attended(Lynyrd Skynyrd, Joe Cocker, Journey, Rush, ect), in frames as wall hangers. I also had another picture frame that contained my ticket stubs. I had a stub or flier that showed YandT on the billing, but I can't remember who they appeared with. It was probably in the 1976-77 slot. I lost so much stuff in Hurricane Harvey. Anyway, I appreciate this opportunity to see one of the many bands I saw during Rock's greatest decade.
They were far from underrated they were one of the greatest rock bands of all times we all knew they were great from day 1 They had some of the biggest concerts and biggest shows of all time monsters or rock
Crazy 74' Winterland footage ( nice fro Dave) they were local back playing at Weeks Park, Vet's hall and my High School on Fridays Lunch Hour to promote the all age gig's in Hayward where I lived. Really miss my friends Phil and with Leonard just passing ( so sad ) I enjoyed this up-load - Thx -Davekat
Thanks for posting this. I had only heard them before. Great to see what they look like. Truly on of the best bands around at that time. The bass and drums are incredible
I was lucky enough to see them in their heyday in 1985 in Oakland for Day on the Green with Metallica, Yngwie Malmsteem, Rat, Y&T and the Scorpions, I was able to see them at the Fillmore in SF April 2, 2016 and Dave brought Leonard and Joey onstage for a couple fo tunes and it was the closet to the original lineup as we would ever see again.
Y&T players at my high school Monta Vista in San Ramon high school Bill was one of my favorite loved all the guys in yesterday and today entered Dave awesome
Leonard was the man...Closest thing to Bonzo's right foot America ever produced and nobody knew it..but you fine people and all the metal drummers from the 80's that used this band as a major influence. . Got to see the original 4 over 15 times and they never disappointed. RIP Phil and Leonard.
As a single kick playing drummer myself, I can tell you that Leo's right foot was considerably faster than Bonzo's, in terms of raw speed and placement.
wazzz up...this is RAY INFANTE, Y & T just plain kick ass! there debut album was one of my first real albums along with KISS& LedZep...Dave on vocals&all guitars he is truly a Rock&Roll soldier& icon!! rock on from Texas!!
R u kidding me? Dave was an asshole when he first started and was for years later. He mas cooled down alot but believe me I know because I grew up in Hayward and ran with a circle of musicians. They were out of San Lorenzo.
Hi. Thanks for this. I saw Y&T a few times in the 80s, including a support slot on AC/DC's 'For Those About To Rock' tour. I thought Y&T's show was better than AC/DC's. It must have been two years before they recorded the first album. But in 'Tonight' the camera avoids the lead singer! Personnel only credits Dave & Phil with vocals but they are only singing chorus. I can't see a microphone stand for Joey. Was Leonard singing from behind the drums?
Grew up in Detroit. Heard these guys in like 73 I was 13. Hooked after I heard Lenny's foot.. Best by far rock drummer. John Led zep who? I've toured with pretty much every major national act but never seen them. I live in Orange County CA now. And it's on my bucket list to find out where Leonard is buried or his ashes are to pay my much thank you respects.. Anyone know? I heard he's from northern cal..
Saw these guys after this gig at Weekes park in a place called Hayward California it held maybe 100 people and they burn the place down from what I understand Herbie Herbert was there I might’ve been 15 maybe 16 so that was 4544 years ago and they were phenomenal back then they were just kids to still my favorite to this day and as far as I’m concerned Joey Alves IS One of the greatest rhythm guitar players of all rock ‘n’ roll history right up there with Malcolm

David Butorovich wrong never played a double bass ever. His nickname was thunderfoot cause he made it sound like a double but it wasnt.
It’s funny Leonard was my high school president and man the Dean was not happy 😂…long hair rocker! One of the nicest guys ever…R.I.P.
Listen to drumming here !! Wowww !! Never heard drums sounds like this ever !!! Best Drummer of all times !! THUNDER FOOT !!!

Damn STR8! Funny you mention Tommy A. I met his dad John and we got to talkin bout his fave drummers. He told me Tommy loved Y&T!

R.I.P Leonard. Great Drummer.
I agree! Leonard Haze was an absolutely amazing drummer!
So typical, the light crew and camera people never figure it out when Leonard is singing lead.
The drumming is phenomenal.
Dave Meniketti.....some KILLER vibrato in his voice and lightning in his fingers!!
Daves playing and vocal vibrato are what hooked me back in the late 70's, I have every album they've produced and love all of them.. 😉
this is classic. the real Y&T
