@jesperlykkeberg7438 Politics. How quaint. The poll I saw clearly said otherwise. Denmark and other politicians are doing absolutely nothing but pearl clutching, thereby showing everpony just how obnoxious and selfish they are. This also only points out Denmark's tyranny. Two points. 1: An independence vote in Greenland is happening on March 11th. 2: In January, Leaders of Greenland and the Faroe Islands ( another Danish territory) met with leaders of the Marshall Islands and Micronesia about their relationship with the US.
As I have understood it, the upcoming election is for government, the current leading party in Greenland though - Siumut - nowsupport an independence vote early in the next term.
It looks like something will happen with Greenland. What form it takes is another issue. The fact they are talking to Micronesia and the Marshall Islands tells you they are moving closer to the US position. They are NINO’s ( Nations In Name Only), they depend on the US for everything.

It is NOT a rational objection by Denmark against the US owning Greenland. It is part of European snobbery, because Europeans are very left wing, even their right-wing politicians would be very Left here in the States. And so Trump (and Americans in general) are viewed as uncouth, uncultured barbarians who unfortunately have a great deal of military and economic power. They, as usual for Leftists, are even inconsistent in their views, because, viewed dispassionately, Denmark owning Greenland is a holdover from colonial times, and since Europeans view themselves as so "progressive", they should be eager to give up ownership of Greenland! But I think this is a cynical play for relevance, witness Denmark's king changing their coat of arms to emphasize Greenland's position! I agree that the Europeans should be grateful to the US for providing decades of protection against the Russian imperialists, and even reconstructing Europe with the Marshall Plan after WWII. They should be grateful enough to gift Greenland to the US, and I bet if they had been willing, the US would have entered an agreement to give Denmark a deal of, say, 20% of the profits of mineral extraction... instead, as the saying goes, they seem to be willing to cut off their nose to spite their face.
Nonsense. The Danes are pretty based. They never gave in to threats during the cartoon crisis and they will definitely never cave to the threats of Donald Trump, the woke mullah.
@@teekay_1 Slight problem with that as Greenlandic law forbids the private ownership of land. All land is deemed to be commonly owned by Greenlanders. If you want to build a house you apply for a permit or in some cases enter a lottery for a building permit. You may own the house that's built and can sell it but the land beneath remains common property.
I think Denmark recognizes that this pushed Greenland towards independence and they want to find a middle ground so that the USA doesn't continue trying to gain Greenland because they could lose Greenland
Nah, rather it´s the Greenlanders who are furious about the US intimidation tactics and who wants to retaliate. Denmark is like the jealous mother of Greenland telling the new stepmom that she gives her permission to do things with her child... despite not having custody of her child or any authority over the new guardian.
Yeah, and no one is talking about how much Denmark actually does for Greenland (which is still not even anywhere near what the people need) and America's willingness to absorb funding their entire government
Did you read about the multibillion lawsuit filed against the government of Greenland currently ongoing? The australian mining company wanted to extract uranium and rare earths, but couldnt manage the wasteproduct, so the plan was to dump over 100 million tons of mined extract - some of it very radioactive and toxic - in a large lake on top of the mountain. The Greenland government feared what could happen if the radioactive toxic lakewater ever overflowed into the settlements at the foot of the mountain. So they withdrew the mining rights. And now the aussies sue them for a lot of money. I wonder if you are much different from the aussies when it comes to resource extraction.
@@jesperlykkeberg7438 Um no. First of all, get the quote right. He said he wouldnt rule out military OR economic force against Greenland or Panama. Danish Latino here (I know shocker). If the US wants to absorb the cost of taking care of the Greenlandic people we may be biting off more than we can chew. The resources and everything are great, but if we can't offer at least the same level of welfare and development that Denmark can (tough sell - they have one of the highest HDI in the world) then we should reconsider exploiting another group of indigenous people for gain.
Separatism is an emotional concept. The same thing exists in many countries. For instance, Quebec in Canada has had TWO referendums to separate from Canada. Both times they voted not to do that. Geenland's politicians win when they say they want to separate from Denmark. Not going to happen because it simply isn't possible. If anything, they would completely maintain all their social benefits if they were a territory of Canada...of which we already have three of a similar size. Canada would love to have Greenland and that would change nothing in their day-to-day existence, and as the world's Energy Superpower, Canada could get mining under way.... they are only minutes away from our border.
I guess you mean Nunavut. I am sure Canadá is not comfortable with the US getting bigger in the Arctic. Of course Canada still has to worry about Quebec and Alberta leaving
Half the people in that 800-year history are voting to disconnect from Denmark. The entirety of Latin America had history going back centuries to Spain and Portugal yet broke away. Canada, Australia, and New Z broke from the UK despite very long histories with the UK. The various -stan countries that broke from the USSR had incredibly long histories as part of Russia. Various secession movements exist in countries where the potential breakaway areas have been part of the current country for as long as if not longer than any association with Denmark and Greenland. Your numbers are also wrong. It was first in union with Norway, not Denmark, and would have had nothing to do with Denmark except thanks to a few interesting wars and personal unions that saw Greenland change hands.
Ya…let’s sever ties and join a dumpster fire!! Logical…maybe fix your own house first. It’s a mess and will get worse every day until your orange pylon is kicked off to the side of the road.
Its easy for us to talk about greenland taking a vote and leaving denmark but if a state tried to do this it would be civil war. That said, i thought denmark said greenland could do whatever they wanted. I saw some greenlander say greenland was not for sale but i bet if you handed them 1m they would change their toon fast. I know some greenlanders do want to join the US. If greenland joined the US we could have it dwarfing Canada's GDP in just a few years. Well maybe not but you get my point.
Denmark does a good job trying to NOT be European by running its own currency, border policies, etc. This is more about Denmark's 1000 year old historic claim to Greenland that is being ignored.
There isn't such a thing as centralised NATO funding apart from a small shared admin cost for the HQ in Brussels. Each country is responsible for deciding how much to allocate to their defence budget. If the US ever left NATO it certainly wouldn't reduce the amount it spends on defence or reduce the size of the US armed forces.
Good video and well informend this time around, personally I would not mind greenland going independ and then making a deal with US, sens it would litteraly be cheeper for us in Denmark, I do also agree Denmark should not get any money for Greennland, I think it mostly Danish pride sens we have been sending money there for years and gving mining rights away for years there without mutch return for either Denmark and Greenland.
Denmark has been a shrinking power for centuries. The fact is that they have become a totally irrelevant nonfactor as far as the rest of the world is concerned. Denmark wants to keep Greenland at all costs because it is their last pretense to greatness.
so if Greenland were to declare independence could we offer them more military presence in exchange for mining these resources and fund them by giving them a cut?

Well how nice another country we defend from China for free. Denmark should just sell it or let them vote to be independent. They don't have anything to offer them. U.S has the ability to invest in the country.
It’s not just resources, it’s protection of trade routes, and Greenland is close enough to USA, and North America for a WMD to be launched from and hit within minutes. IMO it is important as is Panama Canal. High military supervision at the very least is necessary
Maybe we should promise them conditional statehood if the population increases. Like once they hit a certain threshold, they become a state and promise residence royalties based on the sale of minerals. That would probably grantee they get said population growth from Americans wanting in on the action. Alaska residents already get that for oil so it’s not a new concept.
Dude. Greenland is not PRIMARILY about the resources. The resources are secondary. It really is about national security. China has a stake in EVERY mining company currently operation in Greenland. They also have a "research station" in Greenland. And, as you noted, China already tried to get contracts with Greenland to build airports and infrastructure, which we stopped, but which would have given them an advantageous military position against us (because any Chinese company operating internationally is intimately connected to its govt and its military). Plus, as you briefly mentioned, the Northwest Passage is increasingly available, and it's extremely important that they don't control, or have any influence over, that. And we can't leave our ability to block China in Greenland in the hands of another country, including Greenland itself, that might decide against us. From a position in Greenland, an adversary like China could launch a preemptive strike on the US that would give us little warning and that would leave us crippled and unable to respond. So, Greenland is about national defense above all else. Now, yes, secondarily, it's also about Greenland's abundance of natural resources, particularly its rare earth elements. We do not want to continue to be dependent upon China for strategically vital minerals, and if we controlled Greenland, we'd have more than enough, and could compete with China on the international market for such things, which would prevent other countries from being swayed to China by their need for such things and China's absolute lock on them. So even here, Greenland is more about geopolitical strategy than natural resources. It's just that the natural resources happen to be the battleground. All of this aside, though, i REALLY wish President Trump would reign in his focus. He needs to be focused on our hemisphere, dealing with things like Greenland and the Panama Canal, instead of messing around in the Middle East, talking about taking over Gaza. I don't think ANY Americans want to own Gaza; I sure as heck DON'T. I don't mind working with Israel, selling them arms and equipment, or whatever, but I absolutely do NOT want to get dragged into ANOTHER fight in the Middle East, and I DON'T want our boots on the ground over there. We need to be laser focused on dealing with North and South America, and only with the rest of the world as it directly affects our ability to stand astride THIS part of the world like a Colossus. Finish up the negotiations for Greenland, repair our relations with Canada and get an economic union with them going, wipe out the cartels in Mexico, get operational control of the Panama Canal back, and get rid of China's influence in South America and ESPECIALLY Cuba (THAT is a problem that is LONG past time to deal with). THAT'S what we need to be doing. Let everyone else handle their own dang business. America FIRST, remember?
Demark has a certain condition they're willing to part ways with Greenland but they just don't want to show their real reason why yet. Trump is no dummy and didn't expect this is be an easy transaction so he'll leverage as much as possible to do what he does in his book to get the terms that he wants which is buying it.
The USA has done more good for other countries than any other nation on this planet. Established in July 1944 at the Bretton Woods Conference, primarily according to the ideas of American Harry Dexter White and Britisher John Maynard Keynes. It included 29 member countries and the goal of reconstructing the international monetary system after World War II. America is a very generous nation. One notable example would be the Marshall Plan which financed the rebuilding of eighteen western European nations after their devastation during WWII. In 2023, the US was the largest donor of humanitarian aid worldwide donating USD. 9,489.04 million. The US has historically given more money in foreign aid in total U.S. dollars than any other country in the world, distributing more than $640 billion globally from 2012 through 2022.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the US HAS committed approximately $56.3 billion in security assistance to Ukraine.
They already have them. The Greenland Parliament is in sole control of issuing mining rights and retains 100% of any generated income. So far 71 companies have pursued licences but only a single US company has applied. The Greenland Parliament has however banned Uranium mining because of the associated toxic waste.
Greenland: "we want our freedom" America: "Great, leave Denmark and join us" Greenland : " we mean we really want our freedom, full independence" Americans " How dare you not want to be annexed" American entitlement at it's finest
Denmark doesn't provide nearly enough money to Greenland, nor do they have the capital to develop the country. It would be in their best interest to take a couple hundred million for Greenland because at some point the Russians or Chinese will simply take it. And I get the sensitivity of Denmark; they used to own Iceland and had to give it up in the 19th century, but if you don't have an army & navy, nor the money to develop the country, you're setting yourself up for failure.
During the Cold War the US had five bases and a personnel of 10,000 in Greenland 🇬🇱. This was in accordance with an agreement from 1951 between Denmark 🇩🇰 and the US 🇺🇸. This was scaled massively down in recent years (including under the first Trump administration) to one base and a 130 personnel. That has been the choice of the US. It has always been ok for the US to scale up again. As for US having resources to develop Greenland, if that is the case why don’t the US develop its other overseas territories? The median household income in US overseas territories is about half that of median household income in Greenland. On top they have free healthcare including specialized treatment, free education including stipends for living costs for students up to and including postgraduate degrees, and a welfare system with flex security. What the US offers its overseas territories is the Jones Act keeping Puerto Rico in poverty. How would that be attractive? If the US wants resources from Greenland you can always invest. There is only one active mine in Greenland, but 76 projects. Of these projects 56 are from Commonwealth countries (23 UK, 23 Canada etc.), 12 from Denmark/Greenland, 6 from EU countries, 1 from India and 1 from the US. So just wake up instead of sitting on your hands. Final point, US is unable to patrol the waters and fiords of Greenland. US navy has zero, nada, no, 0 surface warship capable of breaking first year ice. Royal Danish Navy operates seven such arctic warships in its first squadron
Your numbers are off the clock regarding the number of projects many of which are history. Greenland currently has two operating mines, with Lumina Sustainable Materials (minority ownership by Hudson Resources) producing anorthosite and privately owned Norwegian-owned Greenland Ruby which produces rubies and pink sapphires. London-based Bluejay Mining’s Dundas Project in northwest Greenland to extract titanium ore from Ilmenite clay, and Australian-owned Ironbark, which is developing a zinc-lead project at its Citronen site on Greenland’s remote north coast.
US Coast Guard Cutter Stratton: A 418-foot Legend-class national security cutter that patrols the waters around Alaska. The Stratton has been deployed to patrol under Operation Frontier Sentinel to monitor Russian and Chinese vessels. Guided missile destroyer: A destroyer that has been deployed to the western region of Alaska. Navy warships: Warships have been deployed to the Aleutians to respond to increased Russian and Chinese activity in the region

Not like it's really their choice tbh

Maybe we should promise them conditional statehood if the population increases. Like once they hit a certain threshold, they become a state and promise residence royalties based on the sale of minerals. That would probably grantee they get said population growth from Americans wanting in on the action. Alaska residents already get that for oil so it’s not a new concept.

I had to remind someone the other day that Greenland is on our North American continent, not the European continent. Mic drop.......
Right, The US shouldn´t be allowed to exist. The Inuits and other natives were already there.
Is Gaza also on your north America continent?
Your IQ is too low for this topic, clearly.
tell the greenland people what we can do for them how they would benifit, then let them vote
Demark has a certain condition they're willing to part ways with Greenland but they just don't want to show their real reason why yet.

The Greenlanders could benefit from the mineral rights just like Alaskans get from their oil.
They already have them. The Greenland Parliament is in sole control of issuing mining rights and retains 100% of any generated income. So far 71 companies have pursued licences but only a single US company has applied. The Greenland Parliament has however banned Uranium mining because of the associated toxic waste.

Greenland : " we mean we really want our freedom, full independence"

Denmark doesn't provide nearly enough money to Greenland, nor do they have the capital to develop the country. It would be in their best interest to take a couple hundred million for Greenland because at some point the Russians or Chinese will simply take it.
And I get the sensitivity of Denmark; they used to own Iceland and had to give it up in the 19th century, but if you don't have an army & navy, nor the money to develop the country, you're setting yourself up for failure.
