- In todays video I'm going to rank American thrash metal band Dark Angel's full discography, from their 1985 debut album We Have Arrived to their last record record Time Does not Heal that came out in 1991. But they are of course most known for the 1986 album Darkness Descends, which is seen as a genre defining classic. Dark Angel are also known for their drummer, the atomic clock Gene Hoglan (Death & Testament). Other noteble members were Jim Durkin, Rob Yahn, Ron Rinehart, Don Doty, Brett Eriksen, Mike Gonzalez, Eric Meyer & Jack Schwartz. Dark Angel also appeared on the Metal Massacre compilation series that helped popularize bands like Slayer, Metallica, Voivod and Flotsam and Jetsam. So today we're ranking the four full-lenght albums of California thrashers Dark Angel. Enjoy!

Another ranking I fully agree with! Darkness Descends remains their supreme effort! It is simply an album with no weaknesses, for me it is flawless from start to finish! Throughout the years I must have listened to it more than 100 times now, and I simply can't get enough of it, it has that certain something which blows me away and makes me come back to it over and over again! It certainly deserves to be considered their best album. The rest of the albums are pretty good too, it would be kinda difficult for me to rank them, but my opinion of them is that they're below Darkness Descends. They are just "good", while Darkness Descends is the definition of "excellent"!

I remember when Time Does Not Heal originally came out back in the day and was advertised in the Metal magazines, stating -"THIS ALBUM CONTAINS 246 RIFFS!" that was the teenage me sold.

This video has been a real eye opener for me. The only Dark Angel album I had before this was Time Does Not Heal, which I got at the time because of the 5 star Kerrang review. I remember liking it quite a bit, but as you say, the voice was so grating I could only listen to a few tracks. So I decided to listen to Darkness Descends and Leave Scars and you are absolutely right. Those albums are so much better, so thanks for making this, you've made me realize this band were better than I thought.

I remember a friend let me borrow the time does not heal CD in 91. An thought it's alright not breath taking. I might of heard leave scars but don't remember for sure lol a few years ago I finally listened to darkness descends and was blown away.

Darkness Descends sounds the same over and over. I have given that album many chances and it doesn't do it for me. Dint understand why so many people like it.
Leave Scars is my favorite album and is what I hold to be standard complexity and speed in thrash (along with Exhorder's Slaughter in the Vatican). There is not a lot of metal that gets me more pumped than the wall of violent and technical noise that is this album. Although there are some throw away songs in the album, the other songs not only pick up their slack but just makes it that much better. Older Than Time Itself is a monster of master piece, I cannot stress how awesome this song is. And the tracks like Leave Scars, Death of Innocence, and No One Answers are just as powerful and destructive. I can definitely say that this album has left it's mark on me.

Black Prophecies is a banger of a song, edging in a proto-death metal. I found more similiraties with Hell Awaits than with Reign in Blood. Great video!

Dark Angel is one of the greatest Thrash Metal bands that came out of Los Angeles. Their first two albums, We Have Arrived and Darkness Descends are my personal favorites.

Its crazy to think about how Heavy Darkness Descends was for the time it came out. I would say only Pleasure to Kill and Morbid Visions were the only heavier albums from 1986.
yeah, there is only a handful of heavier albums than that, possessed's seven churches I would throw in there.
Excellent ranking!!! ......for me "We have arrived" and "Darkness Descends" are absolutely wonderful, especially for having Don Doty on vocals (a brutal and at the same time elegant singer) ...........who along with Nasty Ronnie are my favorite singers in thrash !!

Great to see you covering Dark Angel! I'd certainly agree with the Number One, but then the ranking for me would go (2) Leave Scars (I actually love the incredible The Death Of Innocence more than most of the tracks on Darkness Descends); (3) Time Does Not Heal (I gave this five Ks for Kerrang! mag, on release); and (4) We Have Arrived. Just like you with TDNH, of course, I still really like the debut too, but I think Gene's arrival made such a difference to the band. Anyway, keep up the great work! 👍 🤘

Dark Angel were quite possibly the most lethal thrash band in the history of mankind. I bought all their albums as they released. The world just wasn’t ready for this level of brutality. They still aren’t. Had they had better mixing and production on their early albums, I think they would be regarded more highly. I personally liked the rawness of the band. It just made them that much more badass in my opinion. But most peoples brains couldn’t digest the onslaught and brutality of Dark Angel. Absolutely legendary.

How about a ranking for Death Angel? Back in the day my friends and I had a hard time keeping band info,stories and lore straight for all the Death Angel, Morbid Angel and Dark angel bands with similar sounding names; and the fanzines often mixed them up too,

The 1984 "Hell´s on it´s knees" demo is a fun listen as well and the "Into the inferno" tape by Shellshock from 1983 is also worth mentioning.
I´ve seen them on the "Time does..." tour and they played over two hours, what a treat, hehe....

Darkness Descends forever! I love this album. In my top 3 thrash metal albums ever. I like Leave Scars, but it's not as complete as DD. Time Does Not Heal has many great riffs but it's overlong and sometimes boring. Debut it's ok.

Rarely do I disagree with you, my friend, but this is one of those times. I was a big fan of the "LA caffeine machine", as they liked to refer to themselves back then. And I bought both Ultimate Revenge videos when they first came out, even saw DA at the Aragon in Chicago for the Leave Scars tour, so I was listening to them back in the heyday of Thrash. Yes, TDNH was a bust, and We Have Arrived was just okay (even though it was pretty good for a debut). However, I was never a fan of Darkness Descends - and I had the cassette back in the day - but I wore out Leave Scars. It's my #1 by a mile, and maybe one of my top 10 or 15 from the genre. But I agree with you 100% on Gene Hoglan. Dude is just not human on the drums, and his lyrics (especially on Leave Scars) are out of this world, as well.

It might be because of my own timeline, but I enjoy and listen to We Have Arrived the most. I know Darkness Descends is better, but the debut is the album I come back to the most.

4. Leave Scars - This album is honestly a sad case. It's waaay more proggy than any of the other death/thrash albums released at the time, but I hate the production. Everything is registered in super low end so all the instruments merge together in a gross mushy nosie wall.
3. We Have Arived - Stupid but definitely pretty fun, I can really feel the early speed metal energy ponding through out it. Sadly it is brought down by its sheer immaturity. I can't help but cringe at the group vocals on OG Merciless Death, the dudes literally sound like thier 13 lol
2. Time Does Not Heal - The jump in quality between this album and We Have Arrived is comically. For the more proggy side of thrash this album is a must listen. Catchy riffs, Great production, and some honestly incredible lyrics by Gene himself. The only downside is I feel like Ron isn't quite up par with the rest of the band but that's forgivable.
1. Darkness Descends - The mother fucking grand daddy of extreme thrash. This album completely annihilates everything else within the subgenre and its not close. It's like Pleasure to Kill but smarter, like Reign in Blood but more intense. The Speed is blistering, The musicianship is tight and fucking angry, and the production is wonderfully crushing. But this album isn't just a single note thrash fest either, songs like Black Prophies or Death is Certain (Life is Not) add variety in feel. Most importantly though, this album contains Darkness Descends (the title track) which is potentially the most evil and sinister song I have ever heard (New Mellenuim Cyinde Christ by Meshuggah is a close contenter though) There's a reason why this album makes my top 3 of all time.

I think Dark Angel epitomized everything about what a real thrash metal band should be. Darkness descends for me it's the best album besides reign in blood, pleasure to kill . second it's; leave scars , 3rd we have arrived a legendary debut 🤘

I would have a hard time ranking the Dark Angel albums, it would greatly depend on what mood I was in. I would put We Have Arrived last, it's good, but the other 3 are much better. I would go between Darkness Descends and Leave Scars in the top spot as I like them about equally. Time Does Not Heal is not far behind it though and has grown on me a lot since it originally came out.
yeah, the first one is a bit different, less aggressive and more speed metal almost. Which I do like but I can understand that people prefer the other two. They are all good in my opinion. :) Cheers!

Even ranking like you, I don't know why but I have trouble with Ron Rinehart's voice I really prefer Don Doty but otherwise the compositions remain on fire, among the best, most brutal and complex in Thrash Metal, it really misses ! Do you have any news apparently they would be recording their new album since 1991, that would more or less explain why Gene Hoglan would have left Testament giving way to Dave Lombardo, to devote himself fully to Dark Angel ? Dark Angel rules 🤘🔥

@@jeric7740 I agree with you completely. They were the 1st underground metal band that I got into. I read their interview with Nasty Ronnie in Metal Mania magazine and immediately bought Indulgence on cassette. That album was a bridge between Iron Maiden and early death metal. It got me ready for Dark Angel, Slayer, Celtic Frost and Death all of which I immediately heard and said Hell Yes!

It has to be Time Does Not Heal for me. In terms of production, song arrangements and musical technicality not one song falls below greatness. Not many artists in any music genre were writing about sexual violence and the horrors it inflicts on a human being, but Dark Angel faced the matter head on exposing the real evil that men do. And this is what makes Time Does Not Heal an important work of contemporary art.

time does not heal would be my first choice it has a big production long songs complex riffs great thrash album darkness descends a bit more raw production wise but still a awesome thrash album releashed the same year as slayer reign in blood and megadeth peace sells and of course metallica master of puppets so i think it was a bit underlooked and underated but they where good in their own right

Generally an okay album, but it pales in comparison to what was done in the thrash scene in 1985, and is overall quite forgettable.

Also an okay album, but underproduced, incoherent and somewhat tiring to listen to.
2. Time Does Not Heal
This is what Leave Scars should've been. Much better production, more coherent, and of course: 9 songs, 67 minutes, 246 riffs!

Although *"Darkness Descends"* wins as the best album of the band, for content and recording quality it can *NOT* be denied that the cover of *"We Have Arrived"* is brutal.

Ron Reinhart on Time Does Not Heal gets SLIGHTLY monotonous you say? He got SUPER monotonous halfway through the first song and stays that way throughout all agonizing 67 minutes of it. Not to mention all those songs are 3 minutes too long IMO. Time Does Not Heal is just a chore to listen to. And metal, especially thrash, should not be a chore to listen to. I actually think a death metal vocal performance could have salvaged this album, even though death metal was more or less killing off thrash at this point.
Darkness Descends.....what a fucking album. An album so extreme you're never sure if you should call it thrash metal or death metal. I actually think DD and Pleasure To Kill are two bridge albums between Seven Churches and Scream Bloody Gore when it comes to death metal. The greatest thing Gene Hoglan was ever a part of.
